4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Freshman Composition Reader
While I am just starting to use this edition (6th) of the text, I have been happy with The Macmillan Reader since I began using the 5th edition in 1999.The chapters on academic reading and the writing process are thorough (but a bit dry), and the portions of the text that deal with each method of development are well-developed and thought out so as to help students get the best idea of what a "good" essay of each variety should and shouldn't include.4-0 out of 5 stars Worth It!
This may be a textbook, but it is definately worth buying. The instructions on writing were clear and helpful, and the essays were wonderful.I can honestly say that I liked almost every essay in the book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How to read a potato in a painting as a potato and not a solar symbol?
This book is about writing on art.It has sections to equip you with what to keep in mind while writing an essay, research paper or review of an exhibit.
3-0 out of 5 stars Useful in some ways, not in others.
I recently read the 6th edition of this book in hopes that it would help me to improve my ability to understand and write about art. I found that the book is a direct, well-written primer for someone finishing high school or beginning their undergraduate degree, but for someone with a bit more experience, it turns out to be a mixed bag.1-0 out of 5 stars points out the obvious
A professor highly recommended this book to my art history class. Iwas disappointed in it. I had hoped it would offer some useful advice but instead it merely outlines the things anyone writing on a college level (and the book seems to be aimed at college students) should already know. Perhaps it would be better suited to high schoolers. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Francie Nolan, avid reader, penny-candy connoisseur, and adroitobserver of human nature, has much to ponder in colorful, turn-of-the-century Brooklyn. She grows up with a sweet, tragic father, a severely realistic mother, and an aunt who gives her love too freely--to men, and to a brother who will always be the favored child. Francie learns early the meaning of hunger and the value of a penny. She is her father's child--romantic and hungry for beauty. But she is her mother's child, too--deeply practical and in constant need of truth. Like the Tree of Heaven that grows out of cement or through cellar gratings, resourceful Francie struggles against all odds to survive and thrive. Betty Smith's poignant, honest novel created a big stir when it was first published over 50 years ago. Her frank writing about life's squalor was alarming to some of the more genteel society, but the book's humor and pathos ensured its place in the realm of classics--and in the hearts of readers, young and old. 5-0 out of 5 stars Simply a classic
A simple story of a seemingly unimportant life that is inspiring and enjoyable. A must have addition to your library of classics.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tree Grows in Brooklyn: My favorite book
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, which is similar to Angela's Ashes, is a great book. Not only is it very personal and emotional, but it also is a reflection on a society. At times it can be so horribley honest; the descriptions are very blunt.Through the experiences of Francie and many other characters, we get a picture of what life was at that time and place.Francie is surrounded by ignorance and poverty. Some of the scenes she witnesses are not very pleasent (for example, the women who gang up on the girl who has a baby and throw rocks at her). But through it all, Francie manages to have a good time. On the last page of the book, i wanted to cry, which says a lot because i NEVER cry in books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching To the Heart after many years
I remember to this day receiving this from one of my favorite teachers in the 6th grade (Mrs.Diaz) as a gift. Now, a Sophomore in College, A tree grows in Brooklyn is still my favorite book ever. A really warm story, its so real you can feel it. Really touches the heart. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hands on advice for web copy
Although the book was very focused on selling, I found the advice very interesting and hands on! What interested me the most was the part with the psychological motivators.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes. Yes. Yes.
Another excellent book that clearly illustrates how different copy written for the web and for emails needs to be. Maria shares a lot of secrets that any serious practicioner should adapt to the online medium. The magic word here is adapt, since her emphasis is on products. I also find that short copy, or long copy that feels like short copy, is important when writing for an online audience. Still, this book is well worth the money. I recommend it to my clients and Creative Marketing Workshop attendees.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm very happy I bought this book
I have a website and I realised that my sales pitch (copy) was poor. I decided to look on amazon for some inspiration. 'Web Copy That Sells' seemed the best option, so I purchased it. I don't read too many books, but I just couldn't put this one down. I have since embarked on transforming my web copy on my website.

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost "The One Textbook" for Photojournalism
I have been using Kobre's excellent book as a text for teaching Introductory Photojournalism ever since the first edition; it has always been the best source out there for teaching and has improved with each edition.I consider the current (5th Edition) is be almost "The ONE Textbook" for learning everything you need to knowfor understanding and practicing Photojournalism. A bit more on layout and design for Picture Stories would make it perfect.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendously useful; a photojournalist's bible

Readings from this book provided much debate and learning experiences for our class. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best book in Photojournalism you will ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Classroom!
I used "News Reporting and Writing" when I studied journalism in college. Upon returning to the college classroom to teach journalism, I introduced my students to the latest edition of this wonderful text. The book provides an excellent introduction to the various elements of good journalism and is perfect for a beginning or advanced course on reporting and writing. I recommend it highly!

1-0 out of 5 stars A ripoff at any price! Avoid at all costs!
As a Missouri grad, I took classes with some of these dunderheads and was forced to buy their book. Ranly's great contribution to journalism is extolling the use of the word "that." Moen basically retired to Missouri at age 25. His goal was to brighten up newspapers after the "negativity" of the Watergate-era. Kennedy is a living ghost.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
What a great source of information for screenwriting! This book helped me get focused and put my movie idea into action. I was quickly able to come up with a great log line and look forward to submitting my screenplay to industry soon. I couldn't have done it without "Save The Cat!"
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best in the Business
This book is hands down the best book out there. And, believe me, I have read them all. Blake explains in a very entertaining way the key elements of storytelling and gives tremendously helpful suggestions on how toorganize and develop scripts. If you want the inside scoop on what sells and why, BUY THIS BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wanna make some money writing scripts?Keep reading "Save The Cat".
So, you've read McKee and perhaps been to his seminars and studied character development and scene structure and all that other necessary "writer" stuff and maybe you've even written a screenplay or two that friends told you were "really something special" and "neat!" and maybe you've even got an agent and had those scripts passed around town - and passed ON by everyone in town, much to your and your agent's dismay.Perhaps you're sitting in your kitchen with a half-empty bottle of vodka staring at the WGA-West logo screensaver you made for your computer slowing moving around the desktop wondering "what went wrong?".At about this time an angel should appear floating above the Donald and Daisy Duck salt and pepper shakers holding a copy of "Save The Cat! The Last Book On Screewriting You'll Ever Need."The angel will smack the bottle of vodka out of your hand and replace it with the book, placidly telling you to stop whining and read.Within the covers of this blessed little tome lies the answer to your question. The angel then stuffs a bill for $13.57 in your front pocket and disappears with a *pop* and a faint whiff of patchouli.Sheesh.Angels.

3-0 out of 5 stars Expensive
The book was expensive at my school's bookstore and I regret not buying it from here. It may be called the little BROWN book but mine is purple and I have an older version which is gray...go figure!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars useful writers handbook
My school requires all students to buy copies of this book before entering high school and I do not think they could have chosen a better book to use as a basis for grammar excercises and teaching proper citing protocol. While I have only used sections of this book, it seems to be easy to use and contrary to what an earlier reviewer said, both section names and page numbers are listed in the table of contents. The book is tiny, perfect for carrying in my backback and holds a ton of information. The only problem I have with this handbook is that there is an updated MLA pamphlet that is included with the book and it is harder to understand. Also, the book really should be brown just so the books shows some sense of humor (just kidding). I would highly recommend this book to high school students as a quick reference guide for writing research papers and projects.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hard to Navigate
The layout of this book is very strange, rendering it hard to use.Only a summary Table of Contents appears at the beginning of the book.Worse, it is split over two facing pages--that is, the Table of Contents is presented as one page with the book binding splitting the page in the middle. And, though the book is organized by numbered sections, the section numbers (incredibly) do not appear in the summary Table of Contents. There is a detailed Table of Contents, but it doesn't appear until the literal end of the book.It spans the last page and the inside back cover and is mostly hidden by a fold-in book flap (now that's handy).Of course, this also means that the index is not actually at the end of the book, as you foolishly might have expected; it preceeds that detailed Table of Contents.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Lot Of Hype....But Not Worth It!
Very disappointed in this purchase. High unorganized and hard to follow way to write a book. What the heck? I buy books to help me, not confuse and irritate me! Some good points but mostly my anger speaks more about this book than anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars everything you need in one
there are a couple great screnwriting books out there, but they don't do anything other than dictate the craft to you. This book as a workbook section that propels questions back at you to help you get your story in gear. No other book I have read has done that. It has that, plus five other huge sections that cover everything you could possibly want to know about screenwriting. Except for maybe "Creating Unforgettable Characters" by Linda Seger, this could easily be the only book you'd ever need.

5-0 out of 5 stars SIMPLY THE BEST
I find this guide to be the cream-of-the-crop when it comes to usefulness. Easy to follow, the best step-by-step source for anyone attempting to write a screenplay. For those writing Spec. scripts, doesn't boggle the mind with various camera angles that really don't concern your initial submissions. The basic needs are emphasized here. A real inspirational read for any aspiring screenwriter. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A personal account with interesting anecdotes
Although this is a little old fashioned in its style and content (particularly the photos and graphic style), I was sufficiently engaged with the content and anecdotes to read it right through in one evening. I learnt some new facts and had an insight into the style and ideas of someone who approaches fine lectures and presentations with great care. This made it worthwhile. It is a delightful change not to be assaulted by ego or self assurance. There is one irritating characteristic of style - the repeated use of "granted".

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for engineers
After decades of sitting through terrible technical presentations by hapless fellow engineers (who, to be fair, had never been given the time or opportunity for the proper training), I'd had enough. With plenty of examples of misguided slides to serve as comic relief, I created a one-hour seminar containing the essentials of an effective scientific presentation. Since 1999, I've offered the seminar a few times a year at East Coast and California sites of our (very large) corporation for free at lunchtime, for anyone who cared to attend. So far, nearly 1500 people have done so.
4-0 out of 5 stars A must for scientists and engineers!
This book details a history of scientists and engineers that have made excellent presentations and why. The book then effectively contrasts those styles with poor presentation techniques. The author also presents readers with different methodologies for presenting to diverse audiences.Every suggestion is supported with historical instances of presenters that communicated their ideas effectively. The book proved not to be another "how to make cool PowerPoint slide book." The majority of the text is invested in the structure of the presentation. The book serves as a "how to" for undergraduates, post doctoral fellows and speech trainers alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Clear and Concise Guide on How to Write a Successful Statement for your Application Package

5-0 out of 5 stars a MUST for all students applying to graduate school.
This book was EXCELLENT. I had read two other books before this one, and was disappointed. Though they claimed to be good for grad apps, they were clearly geared toward undergraduate application essays. This book asks thought-provoking questions that help to bring to light relevant experiences and skills that you may have left out. It is great as far as taking you through the process of brainstorming, writing, and revising, but also explains how to write a good essay even if the deadline is looming. It was very good at helping me to organize my thoughts and feel like a good essay was just around the corner - which did wonders for calming my anxiety about the process. The examples in the book were also very helpful, and this is the first book I have seen that had sections dedicated to specific programs (medical, law, business, etc.) THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Personal Statement 101
In "How to Write a Winning Personal Statement for Graduate and Professional School", Mr.Stelzer concisely elucidates how one must bring out an original yet refreshing personal statement. 90% of the sample essays are geared towards the Big 3- Law, Medical, and Business. For students interested in other programs like myself, there are several takeaways one could get from this book. I would strongly suggest using the questionnaires in the Appendix. I learned several things from the pages on advice from admissions representatives. I would also suggest reading all the sample essays first and then the introductory chapter which would help one lay out the groundwork for an original personal statement. Real Essays for College and Grad School by Anne McKinney is another helpful book. Good Luck! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book!
The Blair Reader is a book of different essays that everyone can relate to. There are stories in this book that will make some people say,"thats what happened to me". Some of the stories in the Blair Reader will have you looking at certain situations differently. It acually opens your mind up to things around you in everyday life that you don't normally think about. So, read it, and you'll probably find it enjoying too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blair Reader--- Full and Divers
This book was a core requirement for my freshman english class in college. It is a great text that familiarizes the student with many diverse writing styles and subjects, as well as the essentials of analyzing and interpreting literature.Though this is no doubt a dread to most college students, I really enjoyed the discussion in-class that was brought about by entries in this book (and i'm not even a nerdy English major!).One that stands out to me is an excerpt from Jonathan Kozol on illiteracy in america.I wrote an in-depth analysis of that work for the class, and have kept the skills I learned to this day.Whether used as a text, for leisurely reading, or for exposure to critical thought, the Blair Reader is an exellent volume.I highly recommend this book (even if your Enlgish professor doesn't make you buy it!).

5-0 out of 5 stars Core text for my college English classes.
As a core text for my freshman writing classes, I use the Blair Reader to integrate the diverse ethnic backgrounds of my students through writers with whom they can relate. The Blair Reader also provides an instructor'sresource manual that guides the teacher through the use of collaborativegroup and multimedia activities to stimulate student writing. I wouldhighly recommend this text to any writing or reading instructor who facesthe challenge of the diversified classroom. ... Read more
