4-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad
I thought this product was good but I didn't receive it until right after I took the mcat.I did look at it and everything seemed to be in order and very helpful if you didn't want to make the cards yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sarah
Worth the money. An easy to use quick reference of key terms that you can take on-the-go.It won't cover all your study needs, but it does what it was intended to do well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A+for Absolutely Awesome
The person who made the previous post obviously didn't look very hard at the book or try to study with it, or they would have realized that the definitions upside-down beneath the words are NOT the definition to THAT word. This is a long, thin book of flashcards with a vocab word on the Front of the page and the definition on the Back of the same page. The book does go upside down, but this is because there are more words/defs printed upside-down, therefore using the entire page (since the single word/definitions only take up half a page). So the book read right-side up is Bio, and the book held upside down and read normally is half Bio and half Orgo Chem.

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable asset
Wall Street Words is the most valuable and most frequently used book in my library.I recommend it to my friends and to Amazon users.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK GIVES YOU AN EDGE WHEN STUDYING FOR THE SERIES 7
I am currently studying for the Series 7 stockbroker exam. The study manual often introduces terms with little or no explanation. The glossary in the study manual only covers a small fraction of the terms used. Before buying this book, I would have to list the terms, stop studying, and find explanations.Sometimes, I would have to waste precious study time calling into my trainer to discuss these terms.5-0 out of 5 stars A good word for Wall Street Words

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential for every marketer and sales pro
This book jumpstarts the creative juices in your head and gets you unstuck fast. I highly recommend it to you and attendees at my creative marketing and copywriting conferences.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource - bigger and better than ever!
I've owned this classic reference book for probably 15 years and used it continually at my desk. I recently bought the new edition to replace my tattered copy. Well worth it - the book has already repaid its cost, and then some, in a few weeks. It's much more comprehensive than the original while still easy to use. The language has a more up-to-date feel, yet the author seems to have kept the classic response-getting words and phrases that still pack a punch. Definitely worth the small investment even if you already own the old edition! Look into More Words That Sell, too - its emphasis on niche markets works nicely in conjunction with the all-purpose nature of Words That Sell.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes cliche's help
As someone who's spent more years writing copy than anyone should, I assure you these books can't make you creative, so they aren't much help with high-profile advertising. What they can do is help jump-start sentences for more prosaic marcom needs such as brochures, websites and DM letters. For that, they're handy tools...like a good wrench set for word mechanics. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Some Things Shouldnt Be Tolerated.
Hayakawa does fine when he sticks to language. He had a firm 5 Stars from me until the end when he included his political opinions. And his political opinions are filled with the errors the rest of the book caution against. There really are assheads in the world. Lots of them. And they cant be reached by reason and being nice and being tolerant. So Hayakawa's politics dont abstract down very well. At the lower levels, where you deal with individuals and groups, oftentimes you have to deal with people by applying a folding-chair against the side of their skulls rather than use Hayakawa's advice and be their victim. Get your own thinking straight, recognize the assheads, and step on them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book -- It helps to open one's mind!
S. I. Hayakawa's "Language in Thought and Action" is an excellent read. There isn't much that I can add to what has already been said by other reviewers. In terms of writing and speaking, this book will help me to remain cognizant about the words I use, their meanings, and their contexts. As a reader of books, articles, ads, etc., as well as one who "listens" to what others are saying, this book will help me to recognize that I must discern the "messages" I am receiving, in terms of their intended meaning by the writer and/or the speaker. While the book is very profound and thought-provoking, Hayakawa's style is not erudite -- that is, he does not talk "down" to the reader.I intend to re-read this book many times, in order to glean more of Hayakawa's important message. What remains is to try and get more people to read this excellent work, including relatives, friends, those in government, scientists and engineers, academics, media types, and those in the entertainment industry. If I could give this book more than five stars, I would do so without hesitation.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great foundational book for anyone who wants to think more clearly
I read the second edition of this great work 35 years ago and it became the center of my educational process. Now when someone uses growl words, or refuses to lower the level of generality or brands a person by associating them with a label, I mentally repeat these basic principles of thought and civilization: The Word is not the Thing. Truth is found by getting to the lowest level of generality and examining things with care, not by inflaming people with symbols and putting people in boxes. This book is not only needed by students, but to help all of us deal with those politicans, marketing strategists and commentators who make their living by getting us to think in terms of shallow, implusive reactions. We live in a world of thought manipulation. Semantics can help you filter out the noise and learn how to think.

4-0 out of 5 stars 100 Words Smarter
This book is easy to read and made it fun to learn new words. My 17-year-old son has added significantly to his vocabulary. There are some words that I am not sure I would have included in the list of 100, but regardless, it's a worthy investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fresh approach to words and language
Have always loved the AWAD web site and Garg's fresh approach to language. How nice to have a book in one's hand to peruse at leisure. Garg's introductions to each chapter personalize and make the somewhat arcane words come to life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Verbivores, unite, consolidate, aggregate...
Anu Garg writes a fun romp through the riches of the English language. Did'ja know that English has about 100,000 words? And than the NEXT wordiest language is German--and it has only about 20,000 (and they swipe English words shamelessly.)

This learning toolkit is absolutely fantastic.I played it in the car with my husband and we both learnt a lot in the 45 minute drive.I would recommend to get the most benefit that you sit down at a set time with the CD, pen and paper and get learning.Great facility.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hearing it is better than reading it....( in my case)
This vocabulary learning tool is much effective compared to reading it in a book. Proper pronunciation is also essential in delivering effectively a convincing thoughts to an individual. I have noticed the easiness of learning each certain word, enhanced my memory retention of it and its proper usage specially in making a successful persuasion. The expert created this learning tool has done it right in making an individual like me to enjoyMastering of Words.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best book of American Slang available
I've been using Chapman's slang dictionary for years and I definitely couldn't do without it. It's comprehensive, contains sample sentences, and spans a wide area from black slang and youth slang to business, politics, computers, you name it. This book has almost never failed. By now, a lot of expressions and words can also be found in the best English dictionary around: Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th Edition, with much more current examples of usage. But looking for words in Chapmans book also takes some getting used to, but once you've figured it out you're all set. For example: "to be in the driver's seat" cannot be found under "driver" or "seat", but under "in the ...", which is awkward. Although there's a cross-reference under "driver's seat" to "in the driver's seat", in a whole lot of other cases there's no such reference. And "All over the ballpark" is listed under "all over ...", not "ballpark". For this reason, you sometimes have to take each word of a longer expression and go on a wild goose chase to find the whole expression in the book. Yet, once you've gotten the hang of it, it's ok. Still, great dictionary of slang.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ends: a definition
Ends: Money.
1-0 out of 5 stars I doubt this dictionary
I have a "New Dictionary of American Slang" written by this author in 1986.I didn't like the book from day one, but at the time I couldn't find a different one. No example in the dictionary is from the author himself. This is something I don't like at all. Moreover, many words are not included in the dictionary.I'm now looking for a better slang dictionary definitely NOT BY THIS AUTHOR. ... Editorial Review

What began as a fortuitous discovery, when BBC researcher Adam Jacot de Boinod noticed that an Albanian dictionary contained 27 different words each for eyebrows and mustache, has become, after his obsessive 18-month journey through hundreds of foreign dictionaries, a very funny and genuinely informative guide to the world's strangest--and most useful--words. There are many books out there that invent, Sniglets-style, the words that the English language doesn't have but needs. What Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars good idea, but...
Several other reviewers have uttered the point I was going to make... the idea is nice, but the examples are, at least for a part, inaccurate... I can only speak for the languages I know and haven't read the whole book from cover to cover yet. But when I already found several undeniable errors, my willingness to read it cover to cover dwindled a bit. Someone already mentioned "Scheissenbedauern" which I have never heard although my mother tongue is German, also "agobilles" isn't German at all, but what really make me shake my head in big doubt was the word "allahaismarladik" (in the chapter "fare well") which according to the author is Wagiman (Australian aborigine language) - "to clear off without telling anyone wher eyou are going". Either this guy does not have any idea, or mislayed his dictionaries, or he is incorporating practical jokes on the less informed reader. Any Turkish speakers here? This word simply means "good bye" (literally "we send you away with God" - notice the word "Allah"?, and the usual answer to this is "güle güle" meaning "laugh, laugh").
4-0 out of 5 stars Is this book's author a "schlimazl"?
I must say that as someone who loves both language and learning about other cultures, I found the concept behind THE MEANING OF TINGO irresistible. Unique words from other cultures expressing foreign values? The Albanians have 27 different words for moustache types? Excellent!
3-0 out of 5 stars inaccurate
I agree with other reviewers that the idea is quite nice, but the research has been very sloppy. As a native german speaker, I found that he got about 40% of the German examples wrong. For instance, the word 'scheissbedauern' simply does not exist in German -- as one might verify by picking up any German-English dictionary. (Upon googling, one finds that this word has appeared in the literature -- but only in the American literature.) Hopefully, some later edition of the book will fix these kind of problems.
