4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good!Needs Sentence Building Though!
Here I sit, surrounded by language courses.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good but Lacking in Conversational Practice
I have been using the course for two years now and I can say that I have learnt loads more Spanish than I did for several years in high school. One important tip - the best results are obtained from copying the disks to a portable player (IPod or something similar) and using them while you're walking, on an airplane flight or something similar. The abiliy to pause the recordings, where you need more time to respond, or to rewind or restart a section, where you need to revise individual parts of a lesson, is crucial to getting the most out of the course (or any similar audio course for that matter).
4-0 out of 5 stars I'm On My Way!
For many years I harbored the belief that I have a facility for foreign languages.Unfortunately, I never tested my belief, until now.I resolved to learn Spanish as part of my preparation for a dream vacation in Spain. The Spanish Complete Learn in Your Car set has gotten me off to a great start.Within a few lessons, I began using Spanish words and phrases without thinking of the English language equivalent. In other words, I began thinking in Spanish!I reached lesson five in no time.As a result I'm confident that I could find my way around airports, train stations, and bus terminals.I begin each lesson by listening to an English word or phrase followed by the Spanish translation. In the early stages, I repeat the term twice, exactly as it is pronounced by one of the native Spanish speakers. Before long, I'm able to supply the word or phrase in Spanish before it is spoken in Spanish. My commutes to and from work have never been so productive, and the miles seem to fly by. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very good
I am married to a costa rican and we are moving in 1 month to live in costa rica. So I needed to learn more than the basics. I needed to learn how to speak in sentences,I knew plenty of words but I coudnt put them together. So I talked like a baby.Thisis a great set very easy to follow. The books are great in the begining but when I start to get the cd pretty good I will put it on while I am cleaning and work like that. I don't think my spanish will be perfect after this, that will take alot more time. But if you stick with it, you wiil get a very good base.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to learn Spanish program.
I have reviewed a lot of Spanish programs and I believe that this is probably one of the easier to learn Spanish programs.
4-0 out of 5 stars Speak in a week hahahaah
I found it easy to follow and very easy to understand. The book went right along with the CD...but like anything else, you have to practice, practice, practice and my accent sucks!!!But it is a great product to use for a beginer and my husband has gotten many hours of laughter out of my practicing!!! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The Protestant Corruption of Orthodoxy?
Bearing in mind that most Americans--and most devotees of the Germanic historical critical method--are Protestants or ex-Protestants, I will, briefly, try to explain what is wrong with this book. Yes, Ehrman does make plausible connections between a few variations in New Testament manuscripts and Christological controversies in the early Church. And, in all fairness, that is his point of inquiry.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but have a proper Torah perspective
I am a great fan of Ehrman's work - have most of his books and several of his lectures on video. A note of caution - one must approach the material such as this coming out of the New Testament textual criticism efforts carefully. If one is intellectually honest, and willing to look at all the evidence then the conclusions are clear - there are tremendous problems with the texts and beliefs that were introduced for a variety of reasons. These will and should cause the real truth seekers to question what they know and believe - for that is the hallmark of the truth seeker.

I'm always amazed about people who study the Bible in order to find there errors. They have a lot to say, but it is vanity of vanities.

2-0 out of 5 stars I was expecting more...and I'm a native Spanish speaker
I own the Russian Grammar of this series and I absolutely love that book. I bought this one for helping my fiance to learn my language (I live in Santiago, Chile) expecting to get a very good grammar book.I was very dissapointed when I flipped through the pages, although they cover mostly all the notions of spanish grammar I found that the explanations weren't deep enough on some complicated parts of grammar, specially some verbs and usage of personal pronouns like "lo, le, les". I know how to speak my language of course, but if you ask me "why is this like this way and not like this?" I would have some trouble explaining some things and was the reson why I bought this. I guess it's ok for someone just beggining with the study of Spanish but I believe it leaves too many things unclear making necessary to buy a better researched book if you want too deepen your understanding of Spanih grammar.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent Spanish resource
This is a really great Spanish book for students of beginning, intermediate, and early advanced Spanish. For advanced students in Spanish 4, AP Spanish, and beyond, this book will serve as a very valuable review book. This book, though, may not be for everyone and is definitely not all-purpose.
2-0 out of 5 stars Depends on what you're looking for
To be fair, I was looking for a book to help me with conversational Spanish. This book seems geared more for passing a school course than for learning some quick and useful conversational Spanish.I was looking for a fun way to learn. This is not it. ... Read more

The writing in this handbook for novice technical (as opposed to literary) translators may be workmanlike, but the information is invaluable. The author, Morry Sofer, has been translating for 30 years and has run a translation service contracting with hundreds of translators for the last 15 years. Among the many fields requiring technical translation are automotive, computers, engineering, law, medicine, and telecommunications. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A very, very practical view.
I teach an internship in translation/interpreting ... well, "teach" is the wrong word. All the students have internships, and we meet once a week to discuss their experiences. This is the perfect textbook-they already know how to translate; what they need to know is how to do so as a career. They won't learn that from introductory translation books (which are very good at what they do); no introductory textbook is going to tell you to join the American Translators Association and buy a CAT program!
3-0 out of 5 stars Buy something else if you want to learn how to translate
As a translator student in good old Germany I know somethingabout translation and interpreting. This book contains a lot of useful things; but not the things I was looking for.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a goldmine even for experienced translators

How does one learn kanji, the characters of written Japanese? The traditional approach is rote memorization. Japanese children write each kanji hundreds of times at their desks, and eventually they are acquired. Michael Rowley offers a different way, a mnemonic-association approach that provides a hook on which to hang the meaning and retrieve it easily when the kanji comes into view. The concept is simple: each character is represented under the word or concept it stands for (such as Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars At Last, A Fun Way to Memorize and Enjoy the Kanji
If you really want to get a handle on Japanese reading and writing, you're going to want to tackle at least the 1,945 Joyo Kanji (with the 1,006 essential characters and the other 939 general use characters). That might take awhile...While starting off with a book like "Guide to Reading & Writing Japanese: Third Edition" by Kenneth Henshall and getting a kanji dictionary is a good starting point, they probably won't help you actually retain the kanji very much or make visual connections.
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for visual people
I have been able to lear 400 kanji in three weeks with help of this book just by perusing the book once in the morning and once in the evening.
2-0 out of 5 stars Looks fun and approachable, but can do more harm than good
I had purchased this book simply because it was one of only 3 books on Kanji I could find.Had I so much as a few hours' worth of experience back then, I'd have passed this book up.This book does in fact turn out to be one you can judge accurately by the cover, which makes for a perfect example of why this is a terrible first or second foray into kanji.

4-0 out of 5 stars worth reading
It's a good general textbook on translation. The only drawback is that it makes too much reference to Arabic and Chinese, really interesting languages but not what I was expecting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Just For Fun
I found 'Fun With Chinese Characters', as well as the rest of Tan's work, easy to read, informative, and very helpful in learning Chinese.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Work for a Number of Reasons
This book (with its two companion volumes) is a wonderful work for a number of reasons. Its introductory essay (a nine page historical overview of Chinese characters, emphasizing their phonetic-radical structure) is worth the price of the book all by itself. The cartoon drawings are artful and evocative. The generative and mnemonic entries are informative, historically based, and sublimely written. The work emphasizes simplified characters but supports traditional characters as well.It has examples of modern usage.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome as a study aid!
This is a really fun book. I'm currently in my first year of chinese and really enjoy using this book outside of school. My teacher recommended it to me. It illustrates characters that normally seem difficult in a fun way. This isn't the best choice for someone who is not taking chinese in a class but independantly. It doesn't give much detail on how to use the words. It's just like an interactive dictionary. I absolutely love it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waist your money
I bought this and returned it by the time I got to the 3td CD It was nothing but talk. The first CD was just the author yapping about himself and saying stuff like if you don't get it right away don't worry and I took half a dozen other languages etc. The 2nd CD didn't work and the third one was still talking about nothing that had to do with actually learning Japanese. Translation or otherwise. The box says "The Complete Language Course" but the CDs say something like "The Secret to Learning a Foreign Language" I was so ticked off I didn't even bother to listen to the rest and realized it was a total waist of my money. If I need an "encouraging" book or book on the if you do this or that I would have bought that type of book or CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars The hiragana are helpful
One thing that makes this a great supplement to the excellent all-audio Pimsleur is that the Learn in Your Car series comes with a booklet that has sentences written out in the latin alphabet and hiragana. It's wonderful to practice reading hiragana with this set when the brute memorization efforts seem intimitating at the beginning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great supplement to Japanese study
I used this course, Pimsleur, Japanese for Busy People, and Remembering the Kanji as the foundation of my Japanese studies. While the other products I mentioned are more useful for the initial learning stage, particularly Pimsleur and Japanese for Busy People, this product is a terrific way to review material and is very cost effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Zuina Bezzaf - MUST READ BOOK!
This book was GREAT! It's the best one out there, and it's a Fantastic price. So much information, helpful phrases, easy word spelling for prnounciation. This book was so helpful and yet so simple, it takes you from basic topics such as "Religion" "People" "Places" "Transportation" "Feelings" and so many other topics. This is a must read book. And it's so small, you can bring it anywhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best choice (of 2) for travel needs and tourists...
Okay, so there are really only two books out there that I know of which will teach you anything about Moroccan Arabic: this handy little pocket-sized phrase book and the big, green, more academic text called "A Basic Course in Moroccan Arabic." The choice between the two is clear, with the Lonely Planet book being the obvious choice for the thousands of us who just plan on going to Morocco for a short visit as a tourist or on business. The other book would probably be a better choice if you plan on living in Morocco and need to know the grammar and truly gain some in-depth knowledge, though the LP phrasebook would probably be a good place to start anyway.
4-0 out of 5 stars Well, it sure impressed my Moroccan HUSBAND!
My husband and I have both gone over the book and were quite suprised and pleased at the accuracy. Moroccan arabic is a VERY different dialect from the traditional and Egyptian arabic, so if you are hoping to use this book to communicate with other arabic speakers that are NOT from Morocco, forget it. They will not understand you(although, some Algerians and Tunisians might as many Moroccans live there and the language is a little similar), so don't buy it if you want to communicate with non-Moroccans. I bought the travel pack which included the book, audio cassette and a little lesson book, that doubles as the cassettes's cover. Although, it is true: it is not for conversations or to learn the actual language from; it is mainly travel dialog and gettin' around stuff to say but I have in a pinch been able to use it on my husband with fantastic results. NOTE: this dialect is not spoken all through Morocco. There are several dialects of arabic spoken there. This particular dialect is spoken in Casablanca, Agadir and around there-'bouts. Different regions speak different dialects but most Moroccans should be able to understand you, from what my hubby says. I did have a couple of disappointments though; for one, the book's transliteration is a little strange on some of the words but nothing crucial, you will still be understood. I read arabic and some pages includes the arabic script of the sentences, so I could read that and understand more. Secondly, I wish there was MORE dialog or a part 2!! Third, if you buy the cassette with it, sadly, it does NOT cover anything in the book. My husband and I agree that it is an excellent book and well worth the price but if it is too hard for you to learn it and you are going to Morocco: learn Spanish or French. At least 95% of the population knows them as they are considered the main 4 languages of the land: Arabic, French, Spanish(Spain dialect-not Mexican Spanish), and Berber. If you are getting it to learn for a Moroccan husband or boyfriend, it will slightly help but you will not learn the language or how to speak to him from this book but it's a good reference to have on hand anyway! It has helped me! (get the cassette, too!) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars First book written concerning interpreters and education
Ms. Seal has put together a valid and worthy book about the need for changes in how interpreters are trained who will be interpreting in education environments. With the push for inclusion and placement of deafand hard-of-hearing children in public schools, it is more than about timethat someone wrote concerning the need for more intensive training ofinterpreters to keep up with the knowledge base and subjects that arerequired in school. In a situation where information is receivednon-directly from the teacher, if the interpreter doesn't know orunderstand the subject, faulty information is given to the student. Yetwhen the student makes the mistakes on testing because of misinformation,it is they who must pay the price. This is not a funny subject, but sinceI've been through college with a variety of interpreters with differentabilities, I understand of what Ms. Seal speaks. In a neuroscience medicalclass, an interpreter who was hired because he was cheap and had nocertification, misinterpreted the medical term 'olfactory' as 'oldfactory'. That was bad enough for an adult, but to give that type ofinformation to children on which to base continued learning would be acrime. This book should be read by all those in special education and thosetraining interpreters throughout the U.S.--it should definitely be requiredreading, and I plan to use it in future teaching and recommendations toscience teachers through out the U.S. Karen Sadler University of Pittsburgh ... You need no previous experience reading hieroglyphs to benefit from this book. This is a hieroglyphs guide for the layperson, tourist, or museum enthusiast who'd like to have more of a clue when it comes to understanding Egyptian hieroglyphs. Focusing on the funerary symbols one would be likely to see in Egypt or at a museum, and illustrated with hieroglyphs that are on display in the British Museum (drawn by Richard Parkinson, curator in the Department of Egyptian Antiquities at the British Museum), Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars writing short phrases and sentences
The authors show you how people recorded their thoughts, in a manner radically different from people who use alphabets. But the narrative is clear enough for you to learn to write simple phrases and sentences. Perhaps if you already know Chinese or Japanese, which use pictograms, you will find hieroglyphics not too dissimilar.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hieroglyphic script were written using phonic symbols.
Mark Collier's How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs: A Step-by-Step Guide to Teach Yourself, Revised Edition is really good book about teaching you hieroglyphics. Egyptian's strange, unreadable text and hieroglyphics are not easy to understand. This is because Egyptian's didn't use vowels and one hieroglyph could have multiple meanings. Hieroglyphics were not strictly symbolic or phonetic, but a mixture of both.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nothing can make Russian easy for a late starter
I got a lot for my money - more Russian lessons than I will be able to master.I am a 65 year old rank beginner! Russian has sounds none of the other languages I know have. It is daunting. I loaded Learn In Your Care Russian CD's into my Ipod so they go everywhere with me and after 4 weeks i am up to lesson 6!But the pronunciation comes through very clearly on these CDs.I'm afraid that the local speakers in different parts of Russia have very different accents.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a course.Just a reading of a Russian-English dictionary
If you or someone you know is interested in learning Russian, and you want to kill that passion, this is an ideal package to purchase. Not only has this course made me less interested in Russian, its made me less interested in life in general. It's honestly that bad.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor excuse for instruction
This program is hardly worth the price or time.It presents the language in a disjointed, illogical, unstructured, non-intuitive way.Basically, they rattle off an Engligh word (spoken by a male) or phrase once then the Russian version twice (spoken by a female), then on to a new word or phrase. They never explain anything or build upon what's been used. And there is no variety in the Russian speakers to further train the ear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook
I am currently using this text in a translation class. Larsen builds on the work of her predicessors, but does a much better job of breaking down the information on this vast subject into bite-sized pieces than anyone else. Note, this is not an easy read, but a textbook. It is not a night stand book or summer beach novel. It is very comprehensive and takes some effort in reading and utilizing the excercises in order to gain the most benefit. However, if you have an interest in how to translate meaning from one language into another, this text is indespensable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Translation from A-Z
Here's a book for anyone interested in learning more about the wide range of topics involved in translation. The author applies her years of practical field-based translation (and linguistic) experience to explain the various ways ideas are expressed in the world's languages. Although the author uses many English examples, she also refers to dozens of other languages as they illustrate a point.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very impressive
Excellent book.A well written, well document reference on an era that remained disjointed in information, and vaguely referred to. Gutas collects the various pieces necessary to put things in order and clarify to most of us a history whose aftermath is known, but not the process.Very impressive.A highly recommended book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Profound and interesting academic introduction
A superb review of the subject. I thought I knew a bit about the translation movement into Arabic through Syriac, but Gutas showed me I knew nothing almost. Very deeply researched, by an editor of Brill's Mediaeval Greek and Arabic lexicon. There can be few scholars with such a grasp of Greek-Arabic translation, or of Arabic translations of Greek works. He demolishes some old myths - the idea that Ma'mun's "Bait al-Hikma" in Baghdad was anything other than a library is shown to be baseless speculation, for example - and provides us with a view of the translators that I'd have thought impossible before. The analysis of what was translated was most interesting.
1-0 out of 5 stars AWFUL
