4-0 out of 5 stars good read.
We've used this in my english class a lot.Someone is selected to analyze an essay, write about its style, content, and other features, and then the student writes down a couple discussion questions and then leads a discussion each friday about the essay.I have found each of the essays informative and educational. Some are rather dry, some are sarcastic, some are flat out funny. There are essays of length (10+ pages) and then some that cover only a few pages. The essays cover such subtopics as patriotism, nature, education, politics, and forms of writing.Combining all of these essays together into one book leads to a great read that, finding a way to suit anyone's interests.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Stories
College English text yes, but contains a huge variety of stories from notable writers. Short stories yes, but great for those who don't want to delve into full-length novels. Also contains questions to think about after many of the essays and mini biographies of the authors.

2-0 out of 5 stars Its a school book
I bought this book for a college class and the next semester they changed the book.I read some things on my own and found some good but I don't think it was worth the money.I still have it though because when I read it, it makes me feel smart.Plus they come out with new ones all the time...dont buy it new.Just get a used one. All they change is the cover and a couple inserts so the pages are different and you think its different than the old one. Dont be fooled. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Freshman Composition Reader
While I am just starting to use this edition (6th) of the text, I have been happy with The Macmillan Reader since I began using the 5th edition in 1999.The chapters on academic reading and the writing process are thorough (but a bit dry), and the portions of the text that deal with each method of development are well-developed and thought out so as to help students get the best idea of what a "good" essay of each variety should and shouldn't include.4-0 out of 5 stars Worth It!
This may be a textbook, but it is definately worth buying. The instructions on writing were clear and helpful, and the essays were wonderful.I can honestly say that I liked almost every essay in the book! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!!!!!
This books deals great with strangers. It also shows not to judge a person by the outside. The only thing it needs is to tell kids what to do if a stranger does capture them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!
I think this was the perfect book to teach my son about strangers.I tried to introduce the idea to him myself, but I couldn't explain what a stranger was without scaring him.He already likes the Berenstein Bears so this put a tough subject on his level and did a great job explaining the differences in strangers.I would recommend this book to everyone with a young child and I will be purchasing more copies for my nephews as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Motives for Teaching?
When you contemplate the long list of standard authors, Nobel Laureates, Pulitzer Prize-winners, worthy of emulation by students, what names spring to the forefront of your mind?Adam Gopnick, Vivian Gornick, Zoe Tracy Hardy? If not, you are out of touch with Ms. Magazine, The Village Voice, and The New Republic, those repositories of great literature, from which these and other authors are selected. You may not realize that "nonverbal courtship patterns in women" is on a par with the Declaration of Independence, or that war, racism, government, big business, fast food and most white people are all bad, or that minorities, women, homosexuals, and New York City are all good. You MIGHT, however, question whether this is really an English 101 textbook, as it pretends, or a social tract promulgating the doctrinaire beliefs of the political left.It is interesting reading, but whether or not one agrees with the selected authors, it is emphatically not a student textbook on writing, and it is not a good choice for that purpose compared to other texts available. It is not what itpretends to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Reading!
I had to purchase this book for my english course, but after only two weeks of reading and discussion I feel such an empowerment by the selections. I wouldn't be able to choose a favorite author because each one is represented so uniquely by their stories. After my class is over, I look forward to sitting down and reading those that were not assigned and re-reading those icons of society that were picked by my professor. If you want a short introduction to various famous authors then this is definitely a book you will enjoy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book
I read The Magic Treehouse # 15: Viking Ships at Sunrise. This book is very good. Whenever Jack and Annie want to visit a place, they point to a picture and say, "I wish to go there." Morgan sent Jack and Annie to Ireland to solve a mystery. They had many adventures. The most exciting part of the book was when the serpent rose out of the water.
5-0 out of 5 stars Viking at sunrise
I think you should buy this book because Mary Pope Osborne has great illustrations in this book. The book is about Jack and Annie. The story is set to Ireland a long time ago and they gt in truble with some vikings. You have to read the book to find out what happens.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lip Smacking Good Literature Introductory Text
This is an outstanding survey of some of the best writers and best works written. The book's condensed background and critical literary text sections are vastly improved from the previous edition. The model readings and essays are outstanding and illustrative of exactly the kinds of writing approaches necessary to succeed in introductory and advanced collegiate literature study.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable learning tool

5-0 out of 5 stars a dense book
I had to write a review after seeing the only other review for this book.It sounded like some kid who had to take a class he didn't want to and blaimed the book for it.This is a great book. It's super dense, it contains a great deal of analysis of the various components of writing with illustrative examples (short stories) by a wide variety of contemporary and classic authors. This is a great anthology. It contains almost 1,500 pages and contains poetry, plays, and fiction. Also, it contains some biographical information and has a glossary of literary terms.A bargain for the price if you ask me. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Write this way...
This book, `Patterns for College Writing: A Rhetorical Reader and Guide' edited by Laurie G. Kirszner and Stephen R. Mandell, is a book widely used in colleges and universities, as well as advanced high school classes across the nation. It is a very useful text, and I use it when tutoring students in preparation for community college level writing and reading work.It is used at our college in the basic skills reading courses, too.3-0 out of 5 stars This isn't just another college text.
For me, this collection of student and author essays was worth the purchase alone. However the chapters are also helpful how-tos for writing research papers and essays in college. The book provides a thorough look at different types of writing expected in college.5-0 out of 5 stars Even for the casual reader
I used this book in a highschool course called Advance Composition. It was excellent, not only as a tutor in how to write essays, but because of it's choice of examples.Essays on everything from workaholics to environmental issues, made for hours of reading pleasure. Also, it drew on works of relevant authors of the time, including Deborah Tannen and even Al Gore.I didn't realize essays could have such value, even for the casual reader. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably Good for an SAT Study Book
I actually bought The Mayan Mission not knowing that it was the second book in the series (see my review there). Then I read this one just for fun.Dr. Chapman did a great job mixing a hip novel (cover) with an excellent word study program.I highly recommend both books.

This book is very, very good. My sister is totally into poetry and I'm not but she read this book the Marino Mission, and totally dug it, and Im never reading her stuff, but this was great!A teen romance, but with better writing than what's normal, and definitely NOT BORING.Although it's about a very cute guy hooking up with the heroine in the book. it's really a quite good because its got great adventure and a * thrilling * story.I'm in 9th grade but my sister is in 11th and gets "A"s where I do not, but I learned so much from this book, many new words, because of the notes at the bottom. But mainly I loved the story, I Loved it! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Maybe it's just me....
I'm confused by the reviewers who label this book as leftist propaganda.Sure, it has essays by Michael Moore, Susan Faludi and others who have raised a few hackles, but these articles can be placed in context with other articles both in the textbook itself and on the online guide.
4-0 out of 5 stars A great text for challenging students to think critically...
I have used this book several times now, and while I have had a few neo-conservative students (like those writing the more scathing comments here) who have initially bristled at the more left-leaning readings, those same students are happy to find that voices from their world (i.e. Michael Medved, Danielle Crittenden) are also represented. In fact, these students have left my class stating that the book surprised them, got them to think about these issues from different perspectives. While it certainly didn't turn them into activists for the left, it did get them to think more critically about the propaganda they are fed from ALL sides of the political spectrum, and it also helped them to decipher solid argument from fallacy-driven writing.
1-0 out of 5 stars Should be called Re-Editing America.
The authors skillfully elide several hundred words in the midst of their selection from Thomas Jefferson's "Notes on the State of Virginia" in a fashion that substantially alters the text. Anyone who is determined to use this book as an instructional work would do well to carefully examine the contents before making a final decision. ... Read more

This book is filled with lots of different stories that are very interesting. The story that I liked was the Champion of the World by Maya Angelou. In this story she writes about how African Americans were treated and how afraid they were. She telling us about a fight between Joe Louis an African American and a white boy.She says if the white man wins they'll have to go back to slavery. The store they were watching the fight at was full with people watching the fight, who didn't leave until the fight was over.It was a close fight. But at the end Joe Louis is the winner. The blacks were afraid to drive home after the fight so they spend the night in town.Who knows what could of happened if they did drive home after Joe Louis had defeated the white boy.
