5-0 out of 5 stars The American Accent Guide, 2nd ed.
As a non-native English speaker, I found that the AAG, 2nd edition is a great tool in learning pronunciation and intonation. I try to study and practice one cd a day. Although there are 8 cd's, I wish that the exercises in the grey pages were sounded out.

3-0 out of 5 stars Was not so good as it appears...
This is a good book, but considering its price, I wouldn't buy it again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but requires effort
My writing and vocabulary skills are quite developed, however, native speakers can sense the trace of an accent when I speak.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun to read, useful information, and makes a great gift
This book hits a sweet spot for me.Paul Brians uses a common sense approach in discussing how we use and misuse our language. His approach is not fussy or full of rules.Instead, he uses humor and a light touch to help the reader develop a sense for what is proper and logical. He also helps us learn where we commonly fall into traps by mishearing and misusing words through regionalisms or simply similar sounding words.
5-0 out of 5 stars It is really useful andentertaining.I love it!
I usually don't review any of my purchases. But, this book is so captivating that I had to review it!
2-0 out of 5 stars Too Basic
The content is so elementary that this book cannot be considered a serious reference work for writers. Many of the "Common Errors" seem to have been made up in order to complete a targeted page count. If you already know the difference between "chunk" and "chuck," and know when to use "next door" instead of "next store" to convey your intended meaning, you can pass on this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading Specialist
This is a very helpful book for ESL Kindergarteners!I have all the Words Their Way books and have used them at every grade level in my elementary school.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for K-2 teachers.
Like the other Words their Way materials, this volume continues the wonderful tradition of combining excellent teaching ideas with theblack line masters so you can use the strategies immediately. This level is especially appropriate for students learning letter/sound relationships. It gives dozens of poems and stories which have sorts to support teaching them. There are old faithfuls such as "It's raining, it's pouring" to new poems that teach phonemic awareness, rhyming, visual discrimination and sight words. My favorite is the alphabet printed in several different fonts so students can learn all the ways 'A' might look. I wish I had this 21 years ago when I started teaching.I use it daily now. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to SA Spellers
This book is a great guide to teaching word study to SA learners. The reading is more simplistic and easier to understand than Words Their Way while offering appropriate sorts for this stage. It gives a more in depth view of SA spellers with an excellent sequence of instruction. It's only downfall is that many of the sorts are a little too complicated or have too many headers. It also only offers one sort for each part of a stage, even though some students may need to work within a sort for more than a week.Regardless of these negative aspects, I have really enjoyed this book and it is a great resource for any teacher's or school's library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amer Accent Training
As a teacher I believe this is a great value for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LIKE THE BOOK AND THE METHOD!
I am still reading it. I am in lesson 2 now. I like the method, I do not get bored and this is very important to me!.I feel like reading and practicing most of the time. I think it is improving my pronuntiation. There is also cultural information related to the american accent that is pretty interesting (i did not know it) and helps you to understand many things. The teacher pronunces excellet and lets you time enough to repeat. You have to read the books while you listen to the CD, at least the first time. The first CD it not great to listen into the car. There are many writtenexercises and others to repeat aloud. The exercises are easy and fun.I definitely think it was a good investment buying this course. If you really want to improve just keep practicing, the course its good enough to learn by yourself. This is a good book for persons who already speak/read advanced english.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best you can get!
Definitely worth the money! Of course it'll take a lot of time and effort to pick up a new accent. With this book and the audio CD's it will be a piece of cake to make you sound a lot better in less than no time! ... Read more

If you are looking for a practical and highly informative book on teaching phonemic awareness and phonics - this is one of the very best. The author knows the subject well.He gets right to the point and organizes the information in a very useful format. To name just a bit of what this book contains: clear phonemic awareness scope and sequence, word family lists, essential teaching strategies, effective lesson formats, game ideas, pronunciation guides, phonetic word lists, definitions, assessment tools, etc.I give this book to friends, student teachers, new teachers, and also recommended it as a "must-have" in staff development courses I've taught. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for use with students
I am currently using this book with 11th grade English students, and they have been truly caught up in it. We are actually having arguments in class over poetry!! I do find, however, that it is helpful to do the chapter on rhythm and meter much earlier than I would if I were following the chapters in order. My experience is that students have a difficult time hearing the rhythm of poetry and are generally unable to read aloud with any success. Jumping ahead early to the chapter on rhythm and meter and having the students tap out the meters and then mark the scansion produces a wonderful improvement in their ability to hear the poems and read them aloud. I would heartily recommend this book for use in grades 11 and 12, and for college freshman. It makes the study of poetry hugely enjoyable, as it should be but rarely is, for both student and teacher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good AP Textbook
My senior AP Literature and Composition class is using this book as a textbook, and I would have to say it is the best high school English book I've ever used. The questions following each included piece really helps you to focus on what is important in the passage, and the introductions to each chapter are brief and to the point.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost a great resource (that I'd give 3.5 Stars, actually)

4-0 out of 5 stars Treatment Resource Manual
I have founds both the Assessment and Treatment Manual equally helpful for new and experienced SLP's.As for the review titled "Speech therapy does not work," it is clear that we have a irrational person that cannot see beyond his/her personal experience to see how invaluable SLP's are.We are trained to service many different ages and disorders.Effectiveness of a whole profession should never be evaluated out of anger from an individual experience. However, it is evident that certain support groups are trying to program families into this belief, which is very unfortunate and unproductive(especially for the person their trying to advocate for)!Speech LanguagePathologist are helping their clients daily in the rehabilitation and remediation of skills to help them regain or acquire skills that enable them to function in society. Along with cognitive rehabilitation and speech and language intervention, we also provide dsyphagia therapy (feeding therapy) which certainly helps a client to begin/regain the ability to tolerate certain types of food/textures. This is done to ultimately avoid aspiration pnuemonia, which could be fatal if not treated. This technique strenghthens muscles that assist in eating and articulating. As you can see, our profession is extrememly important.Unfortunately we are not "miracle workers" and can only rehab and treat to the client's ability.A team of advocates, lawyers, or irate family members cannot change this in a person. It is what it is.Maybe the anger should be redirected positively to the person who really needs it, and acceptance should begin. Just then, maybe "real" progress may be observed. SLP's are not rewarded by high salaries, but work and worry about our clients endlessly. Our therapuetic techniques evolve as research does. Keeping an open mind helps people to improve professionally, as well as personally.

5-0 out of 5 stars good resource
This is an excellent resource with descriptions, ideas, examples, helpful hints and age appropirate goals. Not only do you get sample activies but they are very detailed too. They also list additional resources.OH! and example profiles... you can see if one of your students has similar attributes. They have therapy for children, adolescents and adults... what more can you ask for. 4-0 out of 5 stars Worked Fairly Well for My Family
I am a homeschool mom of four kids. I started my oldest two sons at around age 5 to 5 1/2. While it isn't the most thrilling program out there it is very simple. I mostly skipped teaching them their alphabet and taught them their letters one at a time using PP. (They were already familiar with the idea of letters making unique sounds but hadn't put the ideas all together yet.) It starts with teaching the short vowel sounds first, then most of the consonants and on from there. I was able to work with each child for about 10 minutes a day for 3-5 days a week. Within a couple of weeks they had picked up on a bit and soon were reading small words.

2-0 out of 5 stars Tells one a lot of what a linguist would know already
HANDBOOK OF THE IPA is a guide to the use of the International Phonetic Alphabet, the standard manner of transcribing speech in all of the world's languages. This is not a textbook of phonetics, one is expected to already know something of the subject, and definitions of phonetic terminology are given only to clarify certain aspects of the alphabet. There are also no criticisms of the IPA; the handbook aims to be entirely practical and avoid theoretical matters.
5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE
Personally I think that this is a MUST HAVE BOOK for any linguist, or self-proclaimed linguists and linguist-wannabes.5-0 out of 5 stars What you'd expect
This book is exactly what one would expect it to be: a thorough explanation of the International Phonetic Alphabet. It has a beginning section on the description of consonant and vowel sounds and thier places of articulation. The best part about the book is it analyzes the phonetic alphabet of most of the world's languages including many lesser used ones such as Bulgarian, Catalan, and Igbo, for example. The back has a description of each of the symbols so one can figure out what sound an unfamiliar symbol represents. This is a good reference book for all linguistics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Useful.
I discovered this book because it is part of my district's Reading First grant library. The grant itself is fairly amazing and has resulted in our having an awesome set of instructional books along with all of the teachers receiving their own Tungsten Palm Pilot. I took a look at Beck's work to get a better handle on phonics interventions in the classroom and it definitely proved useful. Early intervention is essential in the author's mind (and in everybody else's) which is intrinsic to Reading First's emphasis on explicit, systematic phonic instruction. Beck's defining of terms was of great benefit. I needed some background on the meaning of diphthongs and digraphs as I rarely encounter such lingo on a daily or annual basis. How the alphabetic principle applies to learning was also illuminating. Some of the specific methods, such as the Word Pocket and Word Building sequences, will be of assistance to teachers. Unfortunately, like most education books, this one is overpriced, but that is not the fault of the author or her subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Need help with your struggling reader?
I have ten years of teaching experience, from pre-school to third grade. It has been easy teaching about 80% of my students to read, over the years. They respond well to my small guided reading groups, carefully planned literacy centers, and limited but focused phonics instruction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't wait more than 30 seconds to buy this book!
This book should be read by everyone!Whether you are a salesperson, a public speaker, or anyone that wants to communicate more effectively, this book will help you do it.Written in a breezy, interesting style, the author gives great suggestions on how to make a presentation effectively. It is a short book, by design. My only regret about this book is that I was unaware of its existence until a month ago.
4-0 out of 5 stars Agood little book about the art of communication
What sort of person do you really hate to engage in conversation? For me, it's somebody who doesn't know when to stop speaking.
1-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes 30 Seconds Is An Eternity
The most interesting thing about this book is that the author feels no pressure to legitimize his assertion that there is something special about 30 seconds. Because his background is in the field of television entertainment, (never to be confused with communications), he finds significance in the length of television commercials, which frequently run 30 seconds. That this is done for financial reasons, not attention-span reasons, has evaded him completely. HTGYPAI3SOL is just another in the endless chain of How To books penned by individuals struggling with delusions of expertise, whose only skill is self-promotion, that package the obvious and resell it to the gullible. Readers who find anything in this slim and overpriced tome even remotely surprising or counter-intuitive are advised to probe deeper into the self-help section of the bookstore for volumes on Shoe-Tying For Beginners, The ABCs Of Writing Your Name, and Gravity - It's Not Just A Good Idea, It's The Law. ...
