5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I really like this book. Overall the only thing that was bad was trying to receive the package. UPS refuses to actually deliver packages. Instead, UPS just delivers sticky notes to my door claiming they tried to deliver the package.

3-0 out of 5 stars Practice helps, but...
This wasn't exactly what I had in mind. This book is strictly practice, it doesn't actually teach the child how to write cursive or show the formation at all.And it moves along very quickly, the entire alphabet is covered in four days' practice (half-page each day).Take a look at the Letter Formation Chart in the customer's images - it only shows what the completed letters look like, not how to form them. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Line by Line
Line by Line: How to Improve Your Own Writing is a classic, and with good reason. If you like words like "gerund" and "prepositional phrase," Line by Line has a lot to offer. Specific instructions on how to tell if a sentence is wordy, for instance, even if you don't have an "ear" for it, include such factors as the ratio of nouns to active verbs, and how many prepositional phrases are used.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Nice read
A really well informed book. Any person who is a writer should read....

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book Has Always Been Greatly Revised
As the saying goes, "It's all in the revision." Or, there are no great first drafts. The true masters know that first drafts are terrible, second drafts are slightly better, and in the ninth or twelfth or twentieth draft, after sentences have been improved "Line by Line," mellifluous, deft prose reveals clearly what the author means to say. The meaning of too much writing is bogged down and obscured by under-par line editing. I once had the opportunity to work with an editor who had been at Henry Holt for many years, and when we sat down to go over my manuscript, she recommended this particular book. It has been at my bedside, along with the Bible and Whitman's "Leaves of Grass," ever since. The product of her years as a copy editor for the Modern Language Association (every writer should also own the MLA Handbook) Claire Cook's "Line by Line: How to Edit Your Own Writing," is not for the faint-hearted, nor is it for those who have yet to memorize "the little book" by Strunk and White. Even an English major and MFA holder who has written for newspapers, magazines, and literary journals will benefit greatly, and improve his orher chances of publication, by "eliminating the stylistic faults that most often impede reading and obscure meaning." A straightforward, five-chapter sequence addresses overwritten sentences, bad transitions, "mismanaged" references, problems with punctuation (at the advanced level), and other mistakes that doom writing, whether you're attempting to fine-tune a newsletter, a scholarly paper, a business proposal, or a short story. I have seen many, many books on improving one's writing, and this is, as the Holt editor indicated, as necessary a writing manual as Strunk and White's, and one that will elevate you from competent amateur to master prose stylist. (also recommended for the serious writer at any level: "The First Five Pages: A Writer's Guide to Staying Out of the Rejection Pile," by Noah Lukeman). ... Read more

Editorial Review

It's meant for high schoolers, but adults who haven't inhaled chalk dust for years might appreciate it even more. The process of organizing, researching and writing a paper is laid is out in easy-to-understand normal-speak. The chapters on grammar and usage are very user-friendly, and lots of extras (suffixes, parliamentary procedure, periodic table, metric system, the U.S. Constitution, world maps, etc.) make this an extraordinarily popular and useful household item. If you're feeling generous, you might even let the kid take it to school on occasion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable
This book has been the single most important resource in developing my budding ability to read and write Chinese. The concept of introducing the most fundamental radicals before even the very common characters that employ them is wonderful...I took a year of Chinese in college and struggled to learn the characters with almost nothing to grasp on to, struggling to memorize what seemed like totally arbitrary pictures.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
The problems K. Buckshi notes are real, and therefore I'm not giving this five stars.
4-0 out of 5 stars McNaughton simplified characters.
i had the other book (traditional characters) from the same author. big font, useful to me. however, it is difficult to learn chinese or any other language by memorizing individual words/character. you need a complete sentence. anyway, etymology reference/ explanation is rare, random, not enough, in this book, compared to other books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great way to introduce Aristotle's Poetics.
If you are (or want to be) a serious screenwriter, you probably already know names like Robert McKee, Syd Field, Linda Seger, David Trottier and even David Bordwell...
4-0 out of 5 stars Concise dramatic instruction
This book is useful for fiction writers as well as screenwriters. The author interprets Aristotle's ideas and suggestions and then renders them with examples into language applicable to modern drama. Many of Aristotle's original ideas are quoted and have timeless power. For example: "Beginners succeed earlier with Diction and Characters than with the construction of a story."
5-0 out of 5 stars It really helps to understand screenwritng concepts
This book has not only helped me to understand the somewhat complex art of dramatic stroy telling - but it has helped me to help others. Recently working on a documentaty project with a first time director, this book allowed him to internalize and distill his thoughts into a more cohesive vision, that was readily translatable to an audience. I would reccomend this book to any one who wants to gain insight and understanding to "the movies." ... Read more

This book has so much common sense information. I use it as one tool to screen applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this book...
This is a very "easy read". The concepts and ideas are laid out in an easy to understand format. I loved the quiz at the beginning of the chapters. I also enjoyed the celebrity and criminal handwriting samples. There are lots of samples to study. I was amazed and even shocked at how well graphology really works.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book; horrible grammar
After reading the book, my handwriting did improve but not as much as I had hoped.I found more grammatical errors in this book than in any other book I have read. They probably fired all the copy editors and replaced them with spell checkers in order to save money, but I'm spectulating.Nonetheless, the book is easy to follow and you'll your handwriting improve.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very general; good for beginners
Very basic and simple. The cards and info sheet make it convenient and simple, so this is probably better for beginners who are not looking to do a complete analysis.

4-0 out of 5 stars Attractive cards for learning the basics
There is a Latin saying, "agere sequitur esse", "doing followsbeing".Handwriting is certainly an expression of our being with all its uniqueness. If you have seen a human figure drawn according to the functional areas of the brain, you'd be amazed at how big the hand is in proportion to the rest of the body. There are studies on the physiology of handwriting and the connections with the brain. Others proposed "brainwriting", changing your handwriting to change your personality. There are so many potential uses of handwriting analysis, not limited to entertainement. This set of 64 small, artistic, aqua-colored and handsomely produced cards, with a pad for recording according to 11 categories, gives an easy introduction to the basic essentials.Size represents personal presence, slant for emotional interactions, capitals for showmanship, pressure for intensity, baseline for disposition... They all make very good sense.I would gladly make this a gift for friends interested in personalities.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easy, Economical and Entertaining!
A nice easy and entertaining way to analyze handwriting; the price is affordable, too.Pretty accurate for some basic knowledge about a person through clues uncovered that were previously hidden--just by looking athandwriting alone; it's amazing! The designing on your cards is colorfuland delightful; your "Pen People" look almost"whimzically" (smiles) "human". 3-0 out of 5 stars Good info but seems to drag on and on and on....
This book has some good info but just seemed to drag on and on and on and on and on... Please don't buy this for anyone with a short attention span OR anyone "new" to graphology. This book is terribly lacking in "visual" examples of the traits that were discussed. While there are samples, there just aren't enough, and they look like photo copies that were copy-n-pasted from another book (thus making them blurry and fuzzy at times). This is a THREE STAR book. If you want a FIVE STAR graphology book try "Handwriting Analysis - Putting It To Work For You" by Andrea McNichol (no s on McNichol).

3-0 out of 5 stars beware
the bottom line is that unless you REALLY know what your doing you can easily misinterpret things. not a good idea. its interesting, but dont take yourself to seriously afterwords.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Than Just a Text Book
After reading just about all the most popular tracts on Graphology one has to say that this 456 page tome is the most complete in content and the most thorough in explanation and examples. Yet it is also an inviting page-turner filled with lively side boxes called Tales from the Quill, Fine Points, and Chicken Scratch! This a serious but light-hearted treatment of a complex but enjoyable subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Logical, comprehensive approach to kanji self-study
After hitting a plateau in my Japanese studies, I realized that a solid grounding in kanji was really holding back my progress. I knew that I needed a systematic approach to the 1,945 jyouyou characters and recalled that this series had been used as the kanji textbook at my alma mater, Princeton University, in the Japanese language study curriculum. I worked this two textbook series for about 4.5 years and it has really paid off (e.g., JLPT kanji tests are a snap, even level 1). The ordering, while different from most other kanji instruction orderings, flows nicely and doesn't overwhelm the student with too many similar kanji in a row (e.g., it doesn't group by radical and present every character containing that radical). Granted, some fairly common characters aren't introduced until much later in the series, but this is a small sacrifice for an ordering that flows and supports systematic recall.
5-0 out of 5 stars I love it!
This book was very helpful in my Japanese studies in that it shows relationships between calligraphy and typed symbols and gave phrase examples to show the meaning and, in some cases, origin of words and symbols.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!!!
I am 20, and I have been trying to learn Japanese off and on since I was 16.Recently I have tried to get back into learning it and this book has been the most useful so far, for one main reason, it has spaces for you to write the kanji, the hiragana, and the katakana. For years I have been trying to learn the Kanji by just looking at them, that did not work so well, but this system in the book of drawing them out has finally help me to remember them.Maybe I should of just got a kanji dictionary and some loose leaf paper. Then again, most other kanji dictionaries don't have stroke order and also the box shapes did help me to keep my kanji from being to sloppy.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Guide to the 1,945 Joyo Kanji
Whatever your reasons are for wanting to study Japanese, you'd do well to learn hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Some people go for the spoken-only approach, but I've found that learning hiragana, katakana, and a lot of the kanji has definitely improved by retention of Japanese vocabulary. Many Japanese words include kanji (for example, the word "nihon" for Japan is the combination of the kanji for "sun" and the kanji for "origin"), so knowing what the words literally mean will help increase your understanding of Japanese overall.
2-0 out of 5 stars Beware! This book is not accurately titled
I purchased this book. Unless you have a) photographic memory or b)a pretty good handle on the 1006 + 1945 characters already and just need a review every now and then, this book will be useless to you. It will be difficult to actually learn the kanji in such a way that you can recognize and write them at will, because this book is more like a dictionary listing terms and definitions.

Excellent book.Especially, because of the practice sheets that are included in order to learn the strokes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Terrific!!!!!!!!
This book is hands down the greatest handwriting book i have encountered (i have had at one time or the other more than 8 handwriting books). It is inspring and the results are clearly evident. He doesn't just stop at his book, he goes above and beyond in making you grow as a writer by recommending so other materials and books along the way. My writing has improved drastically (according to other people). One guy in my business college said my writing was the best he had ever seen. GET THIS BOOK NOW.

5-0 out of 5 stars Calligraphy made easy
I am a beginner calligrapher taking classes, and my instructor is using the Fred Eager method of Italic and cursive writing. Since this book is out of print, I was determined to try and find a used copy, which I did, and I am thrilled to have a copy in my possession. I now don't have to ruin my eyes using bad copies and the book is in really good condition so that I am improving with every class and every homework assignment. A beautiful book and method for those who have an interest in improving their penmanship and producing beautifully written text. ... Read more
