5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to SA Spellers
This book is a great guide to teaching word study to SA learners. The reading is more simplistic and easier to understand than Words Their Way while offering appropriate sorts for this stage. It gives a more in depth view of SA spellers with an excellent sequence of instruction. It's only downfall is that many of the sorts are a little too complicated or have too many headers. It also only offers one sort for each part of a stage, even though some students may need to work within a sort for more than a week.Regardless of these negative aspects, I have really enjoyed this book and it is a great resource for any teacher's or school's library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars FABULOUS!!
Both my father and I used this book to work on our spelling. I was born in the US, and English is my first and only language. Ironically, I am actually an English major. While I could interpret the innerworkings of Shakespeare, I couldn't spell basic English words. I started using this book and my spelling improved incredibly! My father, an immigrant from India, didn't begin to learn English until he was 17 years old. However, by the time he had finished with this book, his spelling was nearly perfect!! This book is great for anyone and everyone!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Just Fun!
Over the Christmas holidays, I traveled back east to visit my parents. I carried Lanham's "A Handlist of Rhetorical Terms." One night my mom and I sat up talking about everything from Picasso to metaphysics and at some point we got to talking about Shakespeare. I tried to explain to her why Shakespeare is rhetorically reveered, and at one point I climbed downstairs to the guest room and retrieved Lanham's book. She -- like most of us -- hears the word "rhetoric" and thinks of politicians and empty promises, or phrasing so complicated as to render simple fact obscure.4-0 out of 5 stars A Wordsmith's Wonderland
Samuel Butler once wrote that "All a rhetorician's rules teach nothing but to name his tools."Classical and Medieval rhetoricians named, renamed, parsed, and cataloged all these tools with a bewildering sesquipedalian nomenclature. "Handlist" almost succeeds in its attempt to make sense of this thorny thicket of jargon.2-0 out of 5 stars poorly organized
The problem that I have with this book is that often the words that it defines tells me to go look up another fine. That would be fine, except that I go to the word it said to look up and discover that I either have to look up another word. This book is not helpful in that respect, and given that a lot of PCs run Windows, it doesn't really make sense to release a hypertext version for the Mac but not one for Windows. So the Windows users are stuck with a book that really isn't that good. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful spell-checker for grades 1-6
We have over 300 reference books for our children on various topics and still go to the library weekly for reading books. This book has remained on our shelves because it is so easy to reference.Unlike a dictionary, which is voluminous and printed in a font so small you can barely read it, this dictionary has just the words, listed alphabetically under it's correct spelling, as well as the most commonly misspelled version, so even the worst speller can find it by sounding it out.The font is easily read, about a size 12.The words are separated into syllables with the stressed syllable in bold, which is also very helpful with pronunciation. The pages are made of high quality paper and in color, which is easy on the eyes.
4-0 out of 5 stars Much easier to use than a dictionary
I bought this for my 5th grader and he tells me it is much easier to use than a regular dictionary.I know that it is easier for me to get him to look up words he needed to spell than it was when he had only a dictionary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginning writers

4-0 out of 5 stars Short and complete
I recommend this book because the Hindi Script gets pretty intricate. It is quite interesting to go through the rules governing these intricacies, particularly in conjuncts. You even, in some instances, get to see different forms of conjucts for print, and alternatives to overly complex, and convoluted conjuncts. And there are exercises for you to do so you can practice.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book to study before studying Teach Yourself Hindi
I bought this book simply because Amazon said that many people who bought Teach Yourself Hindi bought this book.I think this recommendation was quite reasonable. When I opend the Lesson 1 of Teach Yourself Hindi, the skit was written in Devanagari.Teach Yourself Hindi also has some pages about the Devanagari Script, but I don't think that's enough. So, I opened this Teach Yourself Beginner's Hindi Script and studied the script first. The book explains strokes and shows plenty of examples of hand written scripts. Those were quite useful. Now I am comfortablly studying the skits in Teach Yourself Hindi.I recommend studyging Teach Yourself Beginner's Hindi Script first.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource to Learning the Devanagari Script
Learning a whole new script can be a dauntling task; a good resource, however, can help one achieve one's goal.I found this book to be very helpful in learning to read and write the Devanagari script.Of all the scripts I have learnt, eg, Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew, this one has been the most difficult. This book goes into detail on pronunciation, history, and shows one how to write the script.I loved the introductory history to Hindi. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Seems to work for me
I'm studying for the GRE's and taking the Princeton Review class in conjunction to listening to the CD.These disks contain several words that are also in the Hit Parade lists that we get from class.Hearing the words, meanings, and sentences using the words really help to learn them. They group the words based in similarity in meanings to help you learn.First, they give you the words, meanings, and use them in sentences. Then they follow by a story using the words. Then they say the words, with a pause so you can think about the definition, and then give you the definition and use the word in a sentence.I've definitely been using the new vocabulary more and more in my everyday speech.I wish Princeton Review would do something like this for ALL of the words from the Hit Parade and Beyond the Hit Parade lists. The only other really effective way I've found to really learn the words is to do a google search of each word, and just see how they're used in context.

1-0 out of 5 stars NO FEATURES (eg words)ARE LISTED!How can make a decision to buy?
I am quite interested in this product, but WITHOUT a list made available on line of the words covered, I am not going to buy this. I dont want to buy this and find out I know most of them! So PUBLISHERS BEHOLD: if you want to really sell this product you've gotta let us know WHAT FEATURES (e.g. words)IT HAS. This is sales 101. Best, Jimmy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Way to Expand Your Vocabulary
This sets contains 5 CDs, each one goes over about 50 words.Good number of the words on these recordings seem to be on a high-school level, though.

Editorial Review

Ages 1-3. This appetizing alphabet book shows fruits and vegetables so juicy and alive, you'll wish they could jump off the page and into your mouth. Even vegetable haters will find it hard to resist the vibrantly colored collage illustrations, which make each item look fascinating and appealing. Long a favorite picture book, this title is now available in a smaller board book edition, just right for introducing toddlers to the mysteries of endive, kiwifruit and papaya. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars vocabulary acquisition
Being a teacher of English, I recommend this book because it's a must-have item, one can learn better about fruit and vegetables by looking at them. It can used by students of all ages

4-0 out of 5 stars The baby loves it!
My little guy really loves this book- he can name all the fruits and vegetables, and pretends to eat them off the page! However, it does not translate into him eating the real thing. We also LOVE the lap size! So many board books are really too little for him to look while mom and dad are reading. These lap-sized editions are wonderful for solving that problem!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to nutrition
I have a picky eater so I bought this book hoping to create an interest in new and healthy foods. It has done that and much more. With all of the characters out there it is refreshing to reinforce alphabet lessons with non-animated items that appear in real life. Plus, it is hysterical to hear a toddler repeat words like "radiccio." This is a great book and a superb idea. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars from a former SAT coach
I used to work as a professional SAT Reading coach, making big bucks; the key issue for most of my students was vocabulary. Rather, VOCABULARY. (The other is slowing down and thinking as--not after--they read.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Fastest way to Build your Vocabulary!
Easy, fast, effective and fun way to improve your vocabulary. It will be a good investment!

3-0 out of 5 stars Alphabetically sorted
The words have indeed been carefully selected. However, I believe there are more efficient ways to improve your vocabulary. Instead of organizing words by themes, they are listed alphabetically. This means that you have to select and rewrite them somewhere else. If you are as busy as I, select a book with themed "word-clusters". ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a handy tool for students
I am a student in high school, and I have found this book to be quite handy in increasing one's vocabulary, especially for standardized tests such as the SAT. The words, in alphabetical order, are typed in big font with the prounciation key, part of speech, definition, and sample sentence below the word. There are quite a few words in this book (1,200) from a-z, so this should satiate the vocab-hungry.
5-0 out of 5 stars Aptly Named
This book is an excellent reference for me. The words in the book are words I would not think twice about if I heard them in conversation or read them in a novel. I know what they mean...kind of. By reading this book, however, I am able to learn a precise definition of the words so I may feel comfortable integrating them into my own vocabulary. This is exactly what I was looking for.3-0 out of 5 stars Good vocubulary list, poor editing
This book contains, as the title suggests, a good list of vocabulary wordsthat you should know. However, the editing in the book is atrocious. There are many typographical errors and probably a dozen words that omit asecond definition that is widely used. The book will help you to recognizewords that you should know, just be careful before you use these new wordsyourself since you may be using a definition that is not widelyaccepted.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Series
My 6-year-old son loves this book. I would have given this book five stars, but for the typography; the font is a little too wacky for beginning readers.

Anu Garg writes a fun romp through the riches of the English language. Did'ja know that English has about 100,000 words? And than the NEXT wordiest language is German--and it has only about 20,000 (and they swipe English words shamelessly.)
5-0 out of 5 stars I think it's great!

The essence of vowels is very different than the essence of consonants, and in this story vowels and consonants become characters in separatist communities whose mutual irritation with the other escallates into war.5-0 out of 5 stars A hit at our house
This is my 5 yr old's favourite book. We've spent quite a bit of time discussing the fun illustrations and the clever text. It always brings smiles to our faces...

....My six year old JUST LOVED this story, the humor is right on target for a child who is learning about the difference between vowels, consonants, letters sounds, etc.Even more so for the emerging reader that can actually read much if the book themselves , including the ending when all the letters "join forces" to spell out a message. This is not a phonics book, rather a humorous tale with a moral.Nurturing good reading habits in young readers involves not only helping them understand that books can introduce them to new ideas and take them to far away places but also that the books they read can be funny and truly make them laugh out loud. This book surely fits the bill! ...
