Pleasant, nonthreatening way to teach basic English skills.
Each time I get a new Hispanic student with limited English proficiency, I purchase a copy of this book for him.My ESL students are all incarcerated men with various educationalbackgrounds.Even those students who have very limited skill in reading Spanish have found this book helpful.One student carried the removable fold-up phrase card in his pocket daily for a couple of months.I would not suggest using this text as the sole teaching material in a classroom setting, but it can serve as an invaluable teaching/learning aid.

Excellente
This is an excellent book for teaching hispanic children and/or adults to learn alot of basic English language. It gives good examples and utilizes them in situations so the pupil may learn at their own pace.

Absolutely essential
As a college student, I would be lost without this manual. It covers APA and MLA writing formats in great detail step by step, with tabs throughout the book marking each topic, making it easy to navigate. A lot of people are intimidated by the price, but $50 is a small price to pay for this kind of information.

For both my jobs
I work full-time for a printer as a proofreader/editor. Part-time, I am an English instructor at the Manhattan campus of the College of New Rochelle. For both these jobs, my one and only Bible is Diana Hacker's, "A Writer's Reference". It is a comprehensive, easily accessible tool for students and professionals alike.

Excellent Resource
As a teacher for community Adult ESL classes with 100% Spanish speaking students I can say that my classes are THRILLED with this bi-lingual, pictoral resource.I know some schools of thought resist the use of native language but my students find comfort and help with the bi-lingual translations (as do I as a Spanish Language learner).This book gives you lots of bang for your buck and the teacher resource materials are very useful, too!!!

Great for ESL or for teens and up learning Spanish
I used this for several years in my Adult ESL classes - the words, and matching up the numbers are a little cumbersome for any age younger than junior high, I think. The only drawback is the lack of phonetic spelling - I think we expect it from a dictionary, but most picture dictionaries leave that part out for some reason.

Multisensory Teaching of Basic Language Skills
This book gives language teachers a great wealth of information regarding dyslexia and reading problems.

A parent's point of view
...this is a great book that I'vesearched for.It pulls tons of useful information about dyslexia into one spot.Only one warning I would send out to parents - this is a textbook not a "pop culture" book.I've found the reading slow going as I'm unfamiliar with many of terms and concepts as I'm not a linguist or teacher.Having said that, I belive I now understand how to help my daughter learn easier which will open many previously closed doors to her.The textbook is worth the effort!!

The Text is Excellent.
I have taught with several of the major readers on the market: Samovar and Porter's, Nakayama and Martin, and others. This text has the most well written readings and contains articles on many seminal issues, context (Hall), time (Hall), etc. This text has the LEAST blatantly fluff filled articles intended only to titillate and pander to students. Additionally, if you review some of the other texts, you will see that they often have poorly referenced articles and the work is less than scholarly. It is possible to write a chapter for a reader such as this and support your content with support and references. The articles here are interesting, well written, well referenced, and more-grounded in theory and research than a lot of the competition. I recommend it highly. MLK

Terrific resource
Anderson explains how to show students the practicality of grammar and how to teach it in context rather than isolation in a way that middle school students will not only understand but also enjoy.He provides lists, lessons, examples, and everything needed to take this approach and immediately implement it in the classroom.This is one of the best-written and most helpful books I have read in years.

A MUST HAVE RESOURCE FOR TEACHING GRAMMAR AND WRITING
I absolutely adore this book! It's incredibly user friendly, and I didn't feel stupid about grammar while reading it. The first half of the book sets up the lessons. The second half is the lessons. It's obvious Jeff uses a writer's notebook and writer's workshop. He truly makes 'grammar in context' a meaningful and attainable way to teach. I have used several of the lessons with my fourth graders and they love it. I think only a book like this, and Jeff himself, could get someone like me to yell AUWWBIS like a farmer's pig call. It's fun and effective - get this book!

Change your life
Being a trainer and an academic co-ordinator, I find that Vygostky is an essential reader for all trainers / teachers. He helps you understand how to teach better, how to use peer learning and when used with experiential learning gives the best results.

The only thing I can say about this book and the author is that this man was a genius! Worth every second spent reading it!

A landmark...
Vygotsky, who was a contemporary of Piaget, unfortunately never received nearly as much attention while still alive.Probably due to the fact that he was working in Russia and had a relatively short career his work seems to have taken a very long time to even get published for 'western' consumption.His theories also go against the grain of the dogma currently in vogue in psychology.Read more

Lack of Style
This book provides important information delievered in an impersonal and lifeless manner. As a writer, I am wary to heed Williams's advice. Do I want to write prose as boring as his? I think not. Frankly, I think that if university students (such as myself) weren't required to read this book for class, Mr. Williams wouldn't make too much money.
Actual practical advice
While what Williams says is all excellent (nits picked by impatient colicky philistines notwithstanding), what really sets this book apart is the workbook approach:you actually learn how to write more clearly by doing the exercises.Brilliant and useful.

Best of the Best
It is difficult to know where to begin. I am writing a brief review of this book to counter the negative reviews I read.I was stunned: I expected to read rave reviews of Professor Williams' book. Without wanting to offend anyone, they are for the most part so far off the mark I would think they were talking about another book.

If you are new to leveling books...
This book is a great resource if you are new to leveling books. It has helped me a great deal because I don't have any of their other titles, so it is not a repeat of information. This book also has the levels of many newly published books. If you want more leveled books, though, I found a great website with tons of them for sale: www.whoossmart.com .

steep price, content lacking at times
This book possesses the unfortunate combination of a high price and too many missing book titles.Not a good value for the money, in my opinion.

FYI
The title should have been the first clue.This reference contains thousands of books that are already leveled by the companies who sell them in bundles of six.I was hoping that this resource would have more trade books written by authors whose intent is to engage and entertain children. Lowering your expectations is good for the relationship
There is an underlying theme in this book that I think is important for every couple to consider: perhaps our expectations of our partners are too high.I've been a therapist for 25 years, and the most common problem I've encountered involves unexpressed-and often unconscious-expectations that one person has about the other. Women, I believe (and I think Dr. Lerner supports this as well), have higher expections than men. Sometimes they are so high, and so many, that there is no way not to be disappointed. What would happen if we lowered our expectations?We might, as Lerner suggests, become better listeners, and take more responsibility for fulfilling our own needs, rather than demanding that our happiness be met solely at home. Of all of Lerner's books, this is one I recommend most often to my clients.We don't need a soul-mate to be happily married, and if we lower the bar just a little, a "good enough" spouse can adequately provide the decades of richness we need.

Too much story telling
This book was recommended for me to read by my husband's personal therapist.He's in anger counseling, after coming back from Iraq, and I'm the one reading about six books right now.

A good book for getting to college level
We use this text for the supplemental/academic skills courses we offer at my community college, for those people whose reading skills are rusty for a number of reasons, including having been out of school for a number of years (sometimes as long as four or five decades), not having paid attention in class in high school, or other low-level literacy related reasons.
Pretty good
This book offers a good basis for learning skills necessary for successful reading, especially academic reading. The end of chapter readings offer a good cross selection of topics.

This jewel caught my eye as I was browsing Barnes & Nobel.I winced at the price ($29.95) but while perusing the book my brain began filling with flashes of inspiration, creative neurons popped like fireworks, and I was hooked.Plus, it would look pretty on my book shelf.
The Reading Teacher's Book Of Lists is excellent!
Recommended for my graduate level teaching certification class, but so easy to read that anyone could use these exercises with their students! Enough lessons to keep you in plans for many, many years.

Most Interesting Book!
For anyone interested in the English language, and anyone curious about it, I strongly recommend this major book. Of course, get the latest edition, mine is the fifth, that is the 2002 edition.

A very mixed bag of articles to read with eyes wide open
"Basic Communications of Intercultural Communication" is a collection of thirteen essays on a variety ofcross-cultural topics, mostly those affecting people of different nationalities or speaking different languages. The quality of the articles is very uneven. Basic Concepts of Intercultural Communication
This is a must read book, especially for those dealing with intercultural communication, both in the areas of foreign language learning and business management. I read some of the articles twice even three times and found the them very inspiring for my teachings as they provided a strong foundation on cross cultural understanding; moreover they have helped me a lot in highlighting the sensitive matters in intercultural communication to my class. I assume anyone dealing with people from different cultural background need to know the arts of intercultural communication, as misunderstanding might result in losing the business. I am quite positive that this book will also be of great help for managers, business people who have to deal with their foreign partners.

A fundamental reference I return to again and again.
