4-0 out of 5 stars Good back-up exercises
I'm not as enthusiastic about this book as the others who left ratings. It doesn't cover the topics I am focusing on this year. It's a bit advanced for my seventh graders.

5-0 out of 5 stars My students enjoy these activites
I love reading and writing, but teaching grammar to eighth graders is just not much fun! This book is an excellant resource. The students enjoy the silly sentences and prompts given to them. The explanations are easy to follow.By eighth grade this shouldn't be new material for them.I've enjoyed using this book to refresh their memories with some of the basic concepts in grammar.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect compromise
If you are a teacher struggling to make grammar interesting and relevant to your students, while also trying to follow an established curriculum (and not work yourself to death in the process) do not hesitate to buy this book!I am a first-year teacher struggling to find a compromise between how I have to teach and how I know I should be teaching--and this book is it!While it appears to be simply a book full of grammar worksheets ('yippie' shouts the administration), it really is a back door to teaching grammar in the context of writing ('woo hoo' exclaims the English teacher). Each exercise is intended to teach concrete grammar rules and skills as well as to apply these new skills to the writing process. It is a collection of the excellent, creative kinds of activities I would come up with myself--if only I had the time! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dan has done it again!
After receiving over 75 rejection letters from major publishers, I decided to launch a micro-publisher that would focus on cutting-edge leadership books. I began with my book "Leading People the Black Belt Way" and have several more books on the way in the near future. Dan Poynter's "Self Publishing Manual" has been invaluable in getting me started. I'm thrilled to read this new, updated version from the grandfather of self-publishing!
5-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Need to Know to Self-Publish Your Own Book

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for the Money
My opinion of this beginner's guide is that anything for this price with a decent word or two of Spanish on it is worth the few bucks it costs to purchase it.
2-0 out of 5 stars simple
this book has all the basics. Good morning, good night, how are you. Most people know this already. If you are going to a spanish country and staying in a nice resort then this book could help. but if you want to learn to speak spanish this is not a very good book for you.

Great for Kindergarten to intro basic phonics, super for first grade!! They will be fun to use in the classroom. The book is also FULL of information about phonics and linguistics. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
As an aspiring writer, I have been greatly aided by Characters and Viewpoint.Card divides his book into three sections: Inventing Characters, Constructing Characters, and Performing Characters. In the first section, Card outlines where ideas for characters come from, and how to exploit these ideas to their full potential. He advocates interrogating our characters in order to realize them as full-bodied figures. In Part Two, Constructing Characters, Card explains that the characters we need depend on the type of story we are telling (e.g. an event story vs. a character story). He writes that many people (myself included, before I read this book) are under the misguided impression that every story needs to have full character development. He refutes this assertion, saying instead that the amount of characterization needed depends on the type of story we are telling. For example, a character story needs more fully-developed characters than an event story. He goes on to explain how we elicit emotional responses from the audience for certain characters (e.g. how we control their dislike or contempt or pity for the antagonist).Part Three, Performing Characters, outlines how we present our characters and situations to the audience through our use of voice and viewpoint. He further explains the distinction between representational and presentational stories, and which you should choose for your own story.
4-0 out of 5 stars Viewpoint First, Characters Third
This book by OSC is a wonderful collection to any aspiring author's collection, but it does not live up to 'How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy'.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing and Indispensable
This book revolutionized my writing. That is the single greatest testament I can give to it.Card will break down, piece by piece, how to build good characters in every type of fiction, and how to avoid making cliche or overwrought decisions regarding your characters.Excellent! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every student needs the Everyday Writer
This book is an ideal tool for anyone who has to write for school, work, or as a hobby. The easy access tabs and extensive menus help you find what you are looking for quickly and the spiral binding lets you lay the book open while you type. The coverage of the writing process and argumentative writing really set this book apart.Anybody can write up grammar rules or documentation standards, but Lunsford's coverage of writing at the start of the book is wonderful.Buy this book and don't sell it back to the bookstore, this is a keeper. Also, for the teacher that wants one for every student, try "Easywriter" which is the smaller version of this text that only costs about fifteen bucks.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I could buy it for all of my students
A good friend who must really love me gave me this book when I headed to grad school. It answered all of my APA citation questions and many of the little grammatical quandries one encounters at 3 a.m.5-0 out of 5 stars A student's perspective

4-0 out of 5 stars Apparently punctuation lessons have to funny or clever to be useful?
A spotlight review for this product is titled "It's not clever and it's not funny." Fine, well, this completely invalidates all of her arguments about punctuation usage, then. As Lynne Truss might say: "Bloody idiot!"
5-0 out of 5 stars Saucy and clever frolic through punctuation!
It's easy to see how the book's breezy run through "the notations of music of the spoken language" has made it a bestseller. It's a memorable reminder of the purpose of punctuation in the first place: to clarify syntax and meaning. Ms. Truss does that with élan!
5-0 out of 5 stars It is clever and it is funny
I realised I needed to read this book recently when a student in China told me that there is no apostrophe in the possessive "its".

5-0 out of 5 stars Italian Verb Drills Better With Behind the Wheel Italian Revised
I have owned and used Italian Verb Drills for years.I would describe it as the quintessential bedrock source for a simplified learning of a potentially complex subject, namely, Italian Verbs. The book is so complete that a simple review will not capture it all.Suffice it to say that it is organized in such a way that anyone is sure to maximize their learning and understand of Italian verbs and idioms in a minimum of time.

I took Amazon's advice and bought Italian Verb Drills to complement my Italian Behind the Wheel Complete Course.

I am finding this work book to go along very well with my Pimsleur language CDs.There are good exercises to reinforce useage. I am a beginner learner and am finding it well written, easy to follow and extremely helpful.I am using it in conjunction with Barron's Italian Verb work book as well and am finding that they explain things a little differently from each other, so what I don't get from one I get from the other. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well Organized
French grammar is hard to learn because although there are rules there are more exceptions than rules. This book does a great job of organizing things in a way to deal with all the expections.I especially like the way it presents the verbs.I own quite a few books on French grammar but the way this book groups the verbs is really much better. In terms of reviewing for a test (or for real life if you live in France) a book like this is essential, since most normal French text book are just too disorganized to find what you are looking for. Also it helps me to see all the rules about a certain topic in one place at one time. There are lots of exercises and the answers are in the back of the book to check yourself.Learning French grammar isn't ever going to be easy, but if you use this book it will be a lot easier than if you don't.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have French learning companion
I don't have to describe the content in detail as the self-explanatory nature of the title.I studied French in L'Alliance Francais for some time.Their communicative approach almost makes me paralysed until I have this book.I can't imagine how a middle age person can learn a new language by merely listening and imitating the sound of teachers. On the contrary the grammatical approach in this book systematically illustrate every single bit of grammar detail for beginner (and intermediate level student). By reading and reviewing the explanation as well as practising the exercise, I can make a lot sense in French now.And I am not just fantizing it.The most exciting piece of news is that my progress is noticed by both my French teacher and my classmates. The mastering of basic is so satisfying and giving me advancement and enjoyment.

5-0 out of 5 stars good for brushing up skills
I've worked through this book a couple of times now to brush up my French skills. It's excellent as a companion to a course, or just to practise. I would recommend it from the beginner, to the more advanced speaker who would like to refine their knowledge of the language. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Meta-Politics Primer
Lakoff and the Institute take their reader through just about every major political debate, explaining how deep framing affects surface framing on each and how both progressive and conservative frames understand the deeper issues behind the policy debates - issues like self-reliance, common good and the morality of property ownership. They then show how to frame progressive arguments in ways that conservatives and biconceptuals (moderates) can easily access and in ways that they can relate to and agree with, while still remaining authentically progressive. He then makes one final point - that framing has to be repeated, time and again and across the board, until it becomes as pervasive and automatic as the conservative narrative has been, and then more so.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another excellent book by George Lakoff and The Rockridge Inststute
As are all their books, Thinking Points; Communicating Our American Values and Vision by George Lakoff isn't disappointing. Well written and easy for anyone to read and understand, Dr Lakoff reiterates the differences between Conservatives and Progressives; "The Strict Father" model and "The Nurturant Parent" model, and why these differences are at such odds in our political system today.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waited for 8 weeks to receive this product.
This product sucked because I definitely ordered it about 3-4 weeks prior to the mcat.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for MCAT study on the go
The person who made the previous post obviously didn't look very hard at the book or try to study with it, or they would have realized that the definitions upside-down beneath the words are NOT the definition to THAT word. This is a long, thin book of flashcards with a vocab word on the Front of the page and the definition on the Back of the same page. The book does go upside down, but this is because there are more words/defs printed upside-down, therefore using the entire page (since the single word/definitions only take up half a page). So the book read right-side up is Chem, and the book held upside down and read normally is half Chem and half Physics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical advice for the college teacher
Professor Bean provides the theory behind his recommendations but, as any teacher who has delved into this literature knows, theories about effective teaching aren't in themselves necessarily very helpful. What one needs is practical advice, and this book has it---lots of it.Bean identifies different writing activities for students; shows how to design tasks for active thinking and learning in the classroom; suggests effective ways to make use of small group discussion in the classroom; explains ways to increase active learning in a lecture course; discusses the mechanics of grading papers; and shows how to enhance learning in essay exams.Even for the experienced teacher, there's a good deal of worthwhile material here, and it's cogently presented.A highly recommended book for the professor who wants to increase active learning in the classroom and get more out of a lecture course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Epic Resource
John C. Bean presents a thorough, logical discussion covering issues that (may seem basic) but that I for one, still struggle with - successfully integrating critical thinking writing assignments into my courses. 5-0 out of 5 stars insightful, thoughtful, and full of useful classroom tools
Bean's text is a thoughtful and useful pedagogical "storehouse" of ideas that teachers can use in their classrooms. Not only does the text provide the theory _behind_ collaborative/cooperative approaches toteaching, but it provides such ideas for a wide array of subjects.Anyonewho values the teaching of writing--whatever the subject area--will findgood value in Bean's text. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars good read.
We've used this in my english class a lot.Someone is selected to analyze an essay, write about its style, content, and other features, and then the student writes down a couple discussion questions and then leads a discussion each friday about the essay.I have found each of the essays informative and educational. Some are rather dry, some are sarcastic, some are flat out funny. There are essays of length (10+ pages) and then some that cover only a few pages. The essays cover such subtopics as patriotism, nature, education, politics, and forms of writing.Combining all of these essays together into one book leads to a great read that, finding a way to suit anyone's interests.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Stories
College English text yes, but contains a huge variety of stories from notable writers. Short stories yes, but great for those who don't want to delve into full-length novels. Also contains questions to think about after many of the essays and mini biographies of the authors.

2-0 out of 5 stars Its a school book
I bought this book for a college class and the next semester they changed the book.I read some things on my own and found some good but I don't think it was worth the money.I still have it though because when I read it, it makes me feel smart.Plus they come out with new ones all the time...dont buy it new.Just get a used one. All they change is the cover and a couple inserts so the pages are different and you think its different than the old one. Dont be fooled. ... Read more
