Helpful

Best study guide, but still needs supplement
I took the GRE last week after studying for months. I'm really happy to report I got 700's on both the verbal and quantitative sections! I initially bought just the Princeton Review book, but found it was lacking in practice questions. This book had plenty of questions, and had very thorough vocabulary and math sections.
Preparing for the GRE
Having to take the GRE is nerve wrecking enough. This book at least gives some comfort in that it provides you with structure.

UNBELIEVABLE RUDE SERVICE!Good luck maintaining business when you don't care for your customers.
I would like to rate this book, however, I was not able to receive it because of poor customer service, lack in help with an address change, and unreliable, rude customer personnel who were unwilling to help me receive my package at an additional address.I am totally appalled and do not plan on using your company for any additional items.If you don't take care of your customers, I don't care to give you business.Oh, and before you send out ratings of purchased items, you might want to check to see if the customer even received the product, which in this case, I didn't.

Few practice problems, too many tips and tricks- unworthy of purchase
I, like many people, bought this book along with a plethora of other GRE prep books (Barrons, Arco, ETS) hoping that a combination of all these books would help me attain the high score I wanted. I figured if one book did a poor job covering one aspect, the others would pick up the slack.
CD- ROM not Mac compatible

I only spent time with the math section
I took the GRE for the second time three weeks ago and did better than I expected. When I took the test before (2001), I had used the Princeton Review material (Cracking the GRE), and it definitely gave me excellent pointers on approaching the questions, guessing effectively, and managing my time. As a result, I got a 660 on the math last time -- pretty good. But I felt that the actual math instruction in PR was a little skimpy, and I got Kaplan's GRE/GMAT Math Review and this Barron's book (the 2006 edition).
Good refresher
This book definately serves its purpose.If you need a good review on math and vocab this book can help.Also the tips on answering questions are extremely useful.I wouldn't use this as my only tool before taking the GRE but it is a huge help.

Law Enforcement Exam
I ordered this book to brush up on some basic math that I haven't used in many years. I got it in order to do better on my law enforcement exam. This book covered everything that I needed. It was just right! It walks through the basics and works one up to more complex problems. It includes clear explanations on how to solve the problem and then provides a practice test for each area covered. It even offers some tricks to keep in mind when encountering certain problems. Perfect for a refresher!

Very Low level book
I bought this with hope to get my brain used to solving complicated problems quickly. However, the quality of excercises in this book is very very low. I could have made up any of the excercises in the book. Unsatisfied, I returned it in 2 days. Do not buy it if you are very good or even avarage at math. This will not help you.

For the price, the best book out there, and probably the only one you need
I took the CAT based GRE general test on 9/1/06. To prepare, I got this book, as well as "The Ultimate Math Refresher", the larger Barrons book, and the ETS book.
Great info and tips
This is excellent to brush up before taking the GRE.The tips are so useful and easy to remember.I would definately recommend this.

Portable is Good
The Barron's books are always great. This only gets 4 stars because the normal size book is obviously better because it is more detailed and has more examples. Not Mac Friendly
While I find the contents of the book sufficient, I am peeved that no mention was made of the CD being Windows only. I specifically purchased this book over some other choices, because I thought the CD would be a valuable supplement. If you don't have access to Windows or were planning to study on a Macintosh or Unix box, then save the additional cost and do not buy this book as it is available for less without the CD.
Good Strategy book
This book does a great job of presenting sound strategies for tackling the different kinds of LSAT questions. If you're disciplined, you can probably prep on your own with this book instead of paying for the entire Kaplan course.

Good stuff for beginner of GRE general test!!!
This book is well organized. Anyway, I thought DVD material is practice test on it, yet there was just MOVIE chlip about GRE. Perhaps this material is waste of money, but in my case, after watching it, I was satisfied with it because I did not know all about GRE test.

NOT GRE Math Subject test
I made the mistake of thinking that "GRE Math" meant "GRE Math Subject test" which it DOESN'T. This book is for the math section of the general GRE and NOT for the GRE math subject test.

This workbook rocks!
With no review and almost 20 years since I last looked at algebra and geometry I got 360 on the GRE math section.With 4 weeks of review using this book I got 570!Imagine what you could do with longer!I highly recommend this workbook.Its easy to follow,the methods are very clear and detailed.It teaches you a few tricks of the trade that are simple and effective.Well worth the money.

Provides all the information required for an 800 score
This book provides a solid preparation for all the concepts tested on the GRE quantitative section either if you don't know them or just want to recall them.

THE BEST RESOURCE
I received nearly perfect scores in all areas of the exam.The testing center Proctor noted that she had never seen such high exam scores!GRE For Dummies prepatory exams were nearly IDENTICAL to the ACTUAL exam.I cannot say enough about this book!

Pretty good
I loved the author's jokes and formats of this book. I was disappointed in the lack of math problems to solve and that there wasn't any review problems after each math section, as there is with the verbal section. Outmoded!
While this book is a good start for learning analogies and reviewing math, it's a horrid way to prepare for the actual experience of taking the exam. The distribution of sections--in number, length, and appearance of a research section--has changed since the publication of this text, and it doesn't prepare you for the fact you'll be doing everything on a computer on the Big Day.

vocab words for small word turds
This product has greatly helped me improve my vocabulary skills for the GRE.It does a good job of teaching the most effective ways to build your vocabulary for the test in a way that does not involve memorising but instead involves learning.

Different is not always bad
When I saw this book in the store, I had the same thought as previous reviewers.I thought that I would rather have actual cards instead of words in a book.But it actually works pretty well for me.The book is designed such that you fold the corner of a page when you master the word.So, after I complete a certain number of words, I go back through them randomly, skipping some, but always going over the pages that are not folded.
an okay product, but not as efficient as it could be
I purchased last year's edition, where you bought an entire book (the same size as a regular GRE review book) which had nothing but pages full of pull-apart flashcards. I much prefered that format as you could actually tear the cards out and have small flashcards with all of the information on them. I do not like the flipbook method of studying vocabulary becuase then you begin to remember paterns, not definitions.

Not very efficient
As other reviews have said, the "flipbook" method is just entirely inefficient when it comes to memorizing words. Even back in elementary school when I was using flashcards, I realized my brain often does not memorize the word itself as much as the order, and with this book it is no different. Also, the two words per page is kind of annoying, and I just don't see why they could not just give us normal, real flashcards. They are so much more efficient! Overall I really would not recommend this. It's too bad there really aren't any good GRE flashcards for sale; Thankfully it won't really matter after next summer when the GRE changes to be more about actual verbal intelligence and less about memorizing words that hardly anyone uses... ... what's with all the typos?
i'm just starting off on this book and already in the FIRST chapter i've come across a number of serious typos. for instance, questions #3 and #4 of the chapter 1 review questions both have ridiculous typos:
"I'm not feeling it dog, it's just a'ight"
Much better the second time around.The first time you complete a chapter and the exercises that follow, you think to yourself "there is no way I am going to be ready for the test by *pick a test date* ".But the second time through, your confidence has been raised, your memory refreshed, and you have become ready to do some serious damage.

Spent an hour unsuccessfully trying to access the free online test
Don't buy this book for the online test. The registration code in the book didn't work. They sent another after I called. Then, after filling in several really annoying registrations forms multiple times (each time I logged in I had to repeat the same forms to "confirm" the information-and you have to fill out every annoying field!), another phone call and much frustration, I still haven't been able to access the free online test. Over an hour wasted. UGH!

Full of Errors
Supposed to be instucting us toward "flawless" GRE performance???How can they charge that much for something with an inexcusable number of errors?I printed the corrections sheet from their website which covered only a few of the many errors in the book.In the section on "tricks" to doing GRE math problems, I found ways to solve the the practice problems that were missed in the answers section!(And I didn't do all that well on the math part of the test.)What does this tell us about the level of the people writing the answers?!Sorry, but it's just annoying!These people are making the big bucks off all of us!

The Perfect Review
I have been doing math continuously in college, but even then, I could not remember how to do the basics required of the GRE. This book was a perfect way to get reacquainted with the technical minutia, and even if I knew it, the book gave me the practice I needed to do the math quickly and efficiently. I would highly recommend this as a refresher, but it is too easy as a primary course of study for the quantitative section. The best part is all the problems are explained in detail, so one can simply follow along. THe entire book took me a week to do, and it was definitely worth purchasing along with another GRE book. Although the other books go through reviews as well, they just teach you the questions on the test. However, you won't get them if you can't manipulate numbers quickly enough, and thereby you won't have the ability to go through the more diffcult questions.

Thought all math texts were horrid...until this book.
I am working on studying and taking my GMAT exam and I always struggled with math.I found a lot of this was due to the fact that incompetent individuals taught and ONLY showed you the text book examples which only managed to show the EASIEST question.For example what do you do with polynomials with inverse exponents if you (like me) don't generally toil with text book math in my spare time Good study guide

Practical, insightful, helpful
I truly enjoyed reading this book, not only as a preparation for taking the GRE general test, but also as a tool for self-enrichment. I admit that I don't agree with everything the author put into the issue or argument essays, but, that's hardly the point for reading this book, isn't it? The sample essays are truly extensive and exhaustive, serving as good models for students who might not be familiar with GRE writing. Moreover, very often I find that the essays jump start my own train of thoughts, challenging my point of view on an issue or argument, and that's a big part of reading this book is about, I believe.
Only 1st section is useful
like titles says... 1st section is useful. Essays themselves are outdated and not really written well. Author says himself that he was not under pressure of time and had time to think it thru, in the end all his essays contain some sort of reference to work of Shakespier or some statistics. How sitting on GRE test I will come up with all these sources? So do not waste your time on 2 nd 3 rd part of this book, but do read thru the 1st one!

Does its job just fine
Although it's true that the topics are not kept completely up to date vis-a-vis the current topics available on the ETS website, the great majority of these topics are in fact still being used, and hence the book is still useful.I should also add that Stewart uses brief phrases describing the topics rather than reproducing them as written on the official list, and they are not in the same order.But as he explains, this is not his fault, since ETS often changes the order and wording of the topics.However, it only takes a little attention to correctly identify which topic the essay is on.So ignore the other reviews which complain about this.Read more

Worked for me.
I used this and the ultimate math refresher to prep for the GRE and scored in the 90th Percentile on the verbal section.I'd say that speaks volumes.Considering I'm the guy who just doesn't do well on standardized tests I'd say it worked pretty well.

Concise GRE Dictionary
I imagine a lot of people will find this book dull. It is essentially a dictionary of words that are purported to appear frequently on the GRE. After about every 9 words (which are listed alphabetically), there are some quiz-games to test the reader's memory. The book's size is just right for a purse, backpack or laptop-pack, but not a pocket. Personally, I find it much easier to deal with than a bunch of frigging flash cards. Although I've yet to take the GRE, I would recommend the book since it does give memorable examples of word usage. If none of the words end up on the GRE, I'll be happy knowing that I expanded my vocabulary knowledge in a pleasant manner.

Excellentfor long term test preparation
This is a very helpful guide for picking up more vocabulary words in preparation for the GRE.This is not a book conducive to last minute cramming however....if you are scheduled to test in a few months, or you just want to brush up on your word power, then Word Smart is a good way to pick up a few words every week. ... good with other things
some of the words on the vocab list were ridiculous - "bacterium" - but many of them were very helpful.I used it in conjunction with the word list provided in the back of my GRE book and together there's probably 1000 words.The flashcards come already made - you don't have to make them yourself.Very convienient."Plastic carry pouch" is a ziplock bag.But good product.

Good quality product.
The cards are well printed, and their size is similar to that of the business card.I wish the card stock would be a bit thicker.Only about 50% of these words are new to me; therefore, I may have to buy set #2.

Helped me get 99%!
I ended up buying all the sets and just went through about 30 cards every morning while eating breakfast... Since I was a science major and hadn't read anything besides science text in four years, I had a lot of catching up to do... When I took the exam I came across MANY of the words I had learned from the cards. I got 99th percentile and I think the cards played a big part in that. GRE tends to pull words from the same pool of vocab- I'm not sure if just using one set of 750 cards would have made much of a difference, but if you can fine the time to plow through all 4 sets (which you can get for a discounted price if you order the next 3 together), you should be in good shape.... ...
