4-0 out of 5 stars A good overview but a little too broad in scope
This outline covers just about all of the applied mathematics that upper level undergraduate and graduate engineers need to know to solve problems. It is a great reference, but its scope is so broad that you really can't use it for anything other than review. The author apparently recognizes that an outline this broad in scope cannot be that instructive either, and limits the introductory portion of each chapter to relevant tables and equations that an engineer/scientist must know to work problems. It is assumed you have other books to function as detailed tutorials. I have to say that the differential equations portions of this outline were far superior to the individual Schaum's outlines for those subjects. Also, the Fourier series and Fourier integral chapters were a bit too theoretical for most engineers, as many of the problems involved proofs or demonstrating properties rather than using the theory to solve problems. However, most chapters have a good mix of exercises - a few proofs, straight numerical problems, and applied exercises such as problems on circuit analysis, for example.
4-0 out of 5 stars A great text and/or reference
I keep one copy of this book at home and one at my office in Los Alamos National Laboratory, as do other physicist, engineers and applied mathematicians.Whenever I forget some applied mathematical method, I first turn to this Schaum's outline.Much more often than not, I get what I need.Only rarely do I have to go to the heavy artillery: Morse and Feshback.
5-0 out of 5 stars essential for any scientist
I bought this book for self study and it is amazing. For someone interested in furthering their mathematical knowledge and applying it to their research, it is a must have item. Especially because of its low price and the numerous solved exercises that one can follow and easily learn from. Covers everything from PDE's to conformal mapping and everything in between at an approachable level for non-mathematicians. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal (solved examples) companion to your calculus textbook
If you are studying calculus, the books from Schaum will certainly help you to develop your problem solving ability.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
This is a good book if you are not looking for true advanced calculus material. This is just calculus--with some tougher topics, but is not a true advanced calculus book (which is much more proof based).

4-0 out of 5 stars A Different Take on Advanced Calculus
After finishing the first 3 semesters of what is basically applied Calculus, majors in pure mathematics part company with their fellow students and move on to what is called "advanced calculus" or "functional analysis". This jump to the next level of mathematics, in which basically students have to be taught calculus all over again from a rigorous proof-based method, is a rude awakening to many. Most textbooks used in this situation, such as those by Rudin, assume that a talented and enthusiastic instructor will be acting as tour guide for the student, and will fill in the gaps. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. This Schaum's outline works well for such a situation. It not only covers what you would expect to see in undergraduate analysis, it mixes proofs with solved numerical problemsand applications so that the student does not get bogged down or bored as can be the case with many of the texts on the subject that have nothing but proofs as exercises. In that way, it is unconventional in its treatment of the subject. Also, it provides more explanation and tutorial than you will find in the average Schaum's outline, and is pretty good at illustrating the correct way to perform a proof. If you can afford it, an excellent companion text to this Schaum's outline is Abbott's "Understanding Analysis", which can be used for self teaching of analysis because it is so detailed and clear.

2-0 out of 5 stars crap
not very helpful compared to the textbook I have. It has a lot of problems and worked out solutions sure, but not a whole lot on explaining the concepts behind them in words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent as a cheap textbook and source of solved problems
This little Schaum's outline is an excellent introduction to signals and systems aimed primarily at the upper undergraduate electrical engineering student. It starts out with an introduction to the various properties of systems - Linearity, Time invariance, causality, BIBO stability - defines them clearly and explains what other properties hold if these properties are present. It does this in plain language that is absent in many expensive textbooks. Next it moves on to clearly describing convolution - the bane of many an EE student's existence. Next it shows how the loathsome task of convolution can be replaced by transform methods if you are dealing with an LTI system. The Laplace Transform method is introduced for continuous systems, and the Z-Transform for discrete time systems. Next Fourier analysis is explained for both continuous and discrete time systems. Next, the student gets just a taste of control theory with a chapter on state space analysis. The final chapter is on joining continuous and discrete systems with discussions on aliasing and sampling of continuous signals. These are very important since everything starts out and often ends up as an analog signal, even if you process it digitally. Of course, there is the ample helping of examples, solved problems, and unsolved problems that Schaum's outlines are famous for. I highly recommend this cost effective study aid.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
It's a great book with hundreds of solved problems. I used it with "Signals and Systems Made Ridiculously Simple" (Zoher Z. Karu) for learning Signals and Systems (with no prior knowledge of the subject) in 4 weeks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook
This is a superb self help textbook which provides concise, clear and easy to understand material. The solutions are really simple to follow. I truly recommend to anyone who needs a guide to his or her chemistry studies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent self-contained inexpensive chemistry textbook
This has got to be just about one of the best Schaum's outlines available, and that is saying a lot, since there are many good ones. I picked up a copy for self study due to a domino effect - I was attempting to learn molecular biology, which caused me to review my college biology, which in turn meant remembering my college chemistry.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is what a chemistry help book should be!
Over the passed few months, I have been buying a lot of chemistry help books to help me survive college chemistry. I have bought the more popular ones like Chemistry for Dummies and the Complete Idiot's Guide to Chemistry. Both of these books are ok, but the part that they really lack is that they didn't adequately help me in the math of chemistry. In fact, it's actually kind of misleading to read these books, and then take a chemistry class.Because these books brush over the math of chemistry so much that I was led to believe that chemistry didn't have that much math in it.But nothing could be further from the truth! When I took my first chemistry class, I felt like I had more math than I did in my actual math class. And, unfortunately, both Chemistry for Dummies and the Complete Idiot's Guide to Chemistry didn't help out too much in this area (and to make matters worse, the FEW examples of math based chemistry problems they had were ridiculously easy.)

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book -weak in areas
I bought this book for my Solaris 10 Upgrade exam -result, passing score! However unless you are an experienced SA,I would recommend not using this book as your sole study guide. There are a few technical inaccuracies in addition the material fails to delve deeply enough into certain key exam areas such as Sol on X86. Post-exam, I view it as a nice Sol 10 reference to keep around.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not perfect
A well written book, gives you almost the information you need to pass the certification exams and also some additional information. Unfortunately it still lack a few information that SUN ask in some questions. I think this is a good book and reference, but you need to already know Solaris and SUN platforms or you'll find this book a bit difficult.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's really a nice book!
It's a good book, it contains all details about Solaris 10..& repeating Solaris '10'..as there're many books claiming it's subject is Solaris 10 but in fact they don't cover any of Solaris 10 new topics..this book does.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good at what it does
What it does: lead the reader through the basic concepts of classic operating systems: processes, synchronization, memory, virtual memory, file systems, IO, and security. Each section alternates between text and answered problems, as is usual for a Schaum's Outline. That's very helpful - putting a concept to use on one problem drives the point home better than a hundred pages of reading. The reader who completes this book, working a good number of the problems, will have seen most of the topics presented in a one-term OS class. No problem there.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent supplement
I have over 10 Schaum's guides for my various courses.I would say this OS guide is perhaps the best one along with the Seymour Lipschutz's erudite "probability" (not to be confused with Murray R. Spiegel's befuddled attempt for Schaum's).3-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre book, disappointing
I was looking for a rigorous review to supplement my Operating Systems course and I found that this book certainly fell short of that.I wanted more practice for the kinds of questions we would get on exams, but many of the topics addressed were treated at too simplistic of a level.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Elementary Book
It is a good primer book for the newby in Finite Element Analysis. It has good and clear simple examples

3-0 out of 5 stars Schaum's on FEA Needs to be Updated
Schaum's Outline on Finite Element Analysis was a valuable and important source at the time it was first published in 1995.However, in the intervening 11 years, this field has advanced rapidly, and the material in Professor Buchanan's otherwise excellent outline is now seriously dated.
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money with other books

I just passed LPIC 101 with a good score thanks to this book. It follows the LPIC objectives very closely. Since the publication of the book the objectives were updated at the end of last year, so you might have to read upon those changed ones.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Linux administration overview as well as study guide
I picked this book up to use as a study guide for taking the LPIC-1 102 exam.(I passed, by the way.)This book was good read that kept my interest and proved a good overview to Linux system administration as well as a LPIC-1 study guide. And it covered a few topics in generally better detail than some other Linux books I've read.Even after the test is passed, I expect I will refer back to this book from time to time as one of my Linux references.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good grammar
It is a really good grammar manual - it contains a lot of explanatios, samples, syntactic rules, semantic clarifications, all of then with traditional and simplified samples with pin-yin.
4-0 out of 5 stars Just The Facts
As always, Schaum's Outline delivers the basics in a concise and practical manner.Well worth the cost of admission.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the better Chinese language books on the market.
There are some really bad ones out there, especially one called, Modern Chinese by Peking University. The only thing modern about that one is that they keep updating the picture on the cover. It was written during or shortly after the Cultural Revolution and contains nouns and phrases no one uses anymore. One of my complaints about other books is that many of them concentrate too heavily on the pinyin, the alphabetized Chinese, the implication being that characters are unimportant. Nothing could be further from the truth. I was in Beijing in 1999 and every sign, menu, train ticket, etc. was in characters. Moreover, because Chinese is a tonal language with a zillion homonyms pinyin really isn't very helpful except as a tool for pronunciation and filing.Perhaps it's because the characters came from pictures most people, once they develop some fluency, find them easier to read than the pinyin.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book will utterly confuse you
Do yourself a favor and avoid this book. The book does not explain, it only documents, with heavy and unnecessary use of terminology. If you want to learn and understand, get Bartz's "Basic Statistical Concepts," an excellent book in it's 4th edition.

2-0 out of 5 stars If you are looking for practical instruction skip this book
If you are studying for the GMAT or a similar test, this book might be helpful. However, if you are struggling with a problem and need practical advice on what test to use and how to perform it, pass this book by.I bought this book in part because it said on the cover that it would tell you how to use Excel for statistic.Forget that unless you think being told "this can be done on Excel" is how-to instructions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for teachers/tutors
I just picked up this book tonight. It looks great for my purposes, as a math/stats tutor.I am always looking for books with lots of practice questions (and the nice thing is, this book includes true/false; multiple choice; short answer etc. -- very handy for testing students' conceptual knowledge) and this one is full of them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully useful content presented clearly
I've studied Mandarin (off and on... too much off) for about twelve years. I have many books that teach me obscure Chinese history or the names of Chinese minority groups' clothing and holidays. But I have sketchy knowledge of many fundamental words, like "water faucet." This book systematically plows through commonly used vocabulary. It tells you, for example, how to say "web browser" and "mouse" in Chinese (which I find essential for showing my in-laws how to use a computer). And, unlike a Mandarin pictorial dictionary I have that displays only Chinese characters, this book also has pinyin and uses the words in sentences.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book (along with "Practical Chinese Grammar"(...))are the two books I use whenevr I don't understand the right way tosay something in Chinese. Neither are for beginners, but after about a semester or two of Chinese, they are indispensible. Many times I know I'm saying something with the wrong grammar, and a quick look-up sets me straight.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not useful to actually learn anything
I bought thsi book thinking it would have been a great purchase to just carry around (i.e. to work) so I can do practice questions when I had time.Well as I started in the biology section I found it very odd that a couple of the questions were repeated a couple of times.I don't see the point in trying to stretch out the number of questions in the book by repeating them.Another major problem I had which ultimately made me return the book was there were multiple questions with the wrong answer.I went into the store and showed them an example. The question asked which of the following molecules has the lowest molecular weight.First they gave the wrong answer as the correct choice, but the explination didn't even match up to the choice that was supposedly correct.I found multiple questions with incorrect answers and/or explinations thus brought the book back.If you don't know the answer to a question and are using the answer key to help you learn, this book sucks.I could not be confident in any of the answers to questions I didn't know based on knowing other answers were wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great purchase!
Having already taken the PCAT, this book is a great way to study without feeling overloaded. The questions aren't confusing and offer nicely detailed explanations. There are also plenty of review questions for each section.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for practice
About 100 questions for each section (only verbal, biology, chemistry, and math). Good and clear explanations. Easy to study. Portable size. Good for someone who needs general idea about the test! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book, worth the price
I got an A in my Linear Algebra class.Part of it may be due to the countless hours upon hours that I studied every week. However, the tools at my disposal helped make the quality of the time worthy. This book is another valueable tool to keep in your toolchest and I'd recommend this as an accompanyment to your class. They do a great job with Vector spaces and Determinants as well as Gaussian elimination.I particularly liked some of the "trick" questions that they stuck in from chapter to chapter (great study aid as many teachers like to stick these types of trick questions). My only complaint is that they prefer to calculate the basis of a row space by non-transposition (whereas our teacher (in our course) used the transposition technique) so I could not really go by that section (thus the **** rather than ***** review) but I can't really fault the author as teachers have their preferences as to how they want their students to calculate certain answers.4-0 out of 5 stars Good book but without index.
This book is a good complement for any course of Linear Algebra. 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book
This book contains 3000 Solved Problems (duh) for those who learn best by example. If you need to catch up on your linear algebra knowledge, or currently taking a class, this book will take the abstract concepts and lay them out in example. Some of the problems do ask for proofs (1 out of 15 or so) of certain theories. But don't let that scare you, if you don't like proofs.Practicing answering these proofs with the answer right in front of you, will not only help you construct proofs in the future, but also will also help you organize the thought processes and give you a better concept and intuition of the material.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You will learn from it
Though this probably isn't the only book you'll need, whatever your teacher gives you throughout the year will fill in the missing gaps.I read this entire book and got a 5 on the exam.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Study/Review Book I've Ever Used
Anyone taking the AP biology test should have this book in their possession. It was great for reviewing sections that i didnt completely grasp in class and was extremely useful in the few weeks leading up to the test in which I did much studing. If you look at the book it lays out several study options for long term studying (year-long), middle length studying(2nd semester only) or a rapid review for reviewing right up to the test. Whether you do well in you class or not, this book will definately help you on the test, covering the key points you need to know for the test.
