Well organized and useful
This is a handy phrase book for those who have no knowledge of Spanish and for those situations where you just need to be that much more specific in communicating your needs.It's not too big, so it's relatively easy to travel with.

Please add local expressions
This phrasebook is very well organised. This is its strong point, I think. This is what I told some English people who asked for my advice (I am a Costarican). I also told them that I think it covers all the expected areas of vocabulary, like airport, travelling, food, but it could cater better for local expressions, the voccabulary local people use. Much improved, a few flaws
I had an edition of this atlas that was published in 1965, but was still on sale until recently. As an avid reader of history of all periods, I consulted this atlas quite frequently. The new 2005 edition is much welcome. Many of the maps are identical to those in the older edition, but much has been added. In general, the new edition is less Eurocentric, containing new maps of African, South American and Asian polities. A notable omission is any description of the breakup of the USSR. The map of WWII is not useful, and appears to have been put in as an afterthought. The map of the Vietnam War is good, but the Korean War map is very difficult to read. Very good new maps also include world distributions of languages, religions, income and literacy, as well as descriptions of political, military and econimic alliances. Overall, an excellent resource.

Good teaching resource
This inexpensive atlas has proven to be a useful teaching resource, given the typically meagre historical and geographical understanding of undergraduate college students.Although coverage is necessarily selective, it hits the major events of the past (wars, empires), and includes a good level of material on the world outside of the US.

OK... But could be better
I recently traveled to Mexico with this book, and with the small paperback edition of Webster's New World Spanish Dictionary.I found that the Random House one is surely a Spanish English dictionary that works both ways, It is a reasonable size to take on a trip (for me, I travel kinda heavy), and I don't have a major complaint, but I found the Webster's to be better, more of a joy to use (I'm not sure I can explain how it can be more of a joy to use, but that's the way it struck me), and it had some words more clearly and applicably defined.

you've got to wonder about 50% discounts
The maps may be glorious (although continuing them across a page split is a serious no-no for a putatively "high-end" atlas), but the binding is from hunger. I can scarcely believe that the publisher would see fit to package such a heavy-duty work in flimsy cardboard with cheap contact paper fittings. No, I'm not asking for tooled morocco, but pay a little respect to your content by packing it with due professionalism! I expect this to be reduced to flinders in short order--not necessarily requiring terribly much rough handling! I am profoundly disappointed.

Something that I can understand
I am currently living in China and "OH BOY!"this atlas sure comes in handy.It's nice to be able to read maps in english especially where I live.I was amazed that the atlas actually arrived here, I thought it would have been confiscated.The context and texture of the book is very impressive.I dare not let the kids handle it without supervision.

Excellent practice and reinforcement
If you've had a semester or two of Spanish, and you truly want to learn the langauge, I highly recommend this book.The book begins with very simple words and phrases and progresses at a moderate pace to more difficult readings.

Better than the book I used in college!
I just got this and the intermediate book that follows this one.they are both amazing. Perhaps the other reviewer had an earlier edition without an answer guide for mine has one.One word of warning, this book does not stand alone, but is better used with either classes or a self-teaching audio package or cd-rom.I really wish Berlitz comes out with an advanced book to finnish off the set.

Take a hike
I was hoping this would be as excellent as the Maine Gazeteer, but it isn't.It is a topographical map, which is fine if all you want to do is hike mountains. But if you want street names and town names better grab a magnifying glass.Tiny print and roads drawn in pastel colors is not really helpful.Disappointing.

World Atlas
The atlas was all as described.It is 8 1/2" x 11" but is easy to read and find what you need to find.I am very pleased with the purchase.

excellent bird's eye view
I browsed the world atlas maps in a bookstore and find this one fit my needs the best. It offers continental (asia, europe, north/south america, ...) graph with various colorshades for population, climate, literacy, GDP, life-expentency....also global graph. Comparative is the best essence of this atlas.

hard to get a good overview of a trip
This atlas shows very few states on a single spread, so you have to constantly flip between different pages when trying to plan a route. I found this very infuriating during a recent road trip in New England. It was always a hassle when we had to pull the map out because there was so much page turning.

I am very happy with this Road Atlas. I am always looking streets, cities and the whole USA. Next Summer I will spend my vacation there and my Atlas will be a very good help.

Quality Made Road Atlas
I gave it 5 stars, but more accurately rate it at 4.6.It is a durably made booklet.It should last for many years, much because of the spiral binding and fairly thick, water resistant pages.It is easy to flip pages and the page you want stays open because of the spiral binding.My only negative comment is that although the state maps are detailed, they could be even more so; there is room on the pages for (more) county roads.Individual state maps provided for free at state welcome centers provide more details.Regardless, I'm glad that I bought it.It's a good value.When not on the road, it looks quite respectable on a book shelf.The more common staple-binding Rand McNally road atlas - now on sale as the year winds down - is a good supplement to throw in the trunk, but it is not nearly as durable. ... as good as gps
If you don't have gps, then this map book is for you. It is very easy to use.

Best Maps Ever!
The Vermont Atlas and Gazetteer (as well as the NH and Maine versions) are simply the best maps I have ever bought and used. Every road in every town is shown, and well as topographical features, landmarks, waterways, etc.
Decent Atlas; Others May Be More Detailed
DeLorme has been establishing a name for themselves, having issued a set of road atlas and gazetteer books for each state, including this one for Vermont. Showing every back road in the state is rather impressive. Couple that with the amount of "gazetteer" information, such as landmarks, points of interest, museums, etc., it can be a very handy trip companion.Read more

No illustrations, but excellent. Mosby's bilingual is comparable but hard to find used. Both recommended by top interpreters/translators.

Historical Maybe, But Not an Atlas
I'll chime in with "catu11us" on this on most of the points raised in that review, but I have a few additional cautions for would-be buyers of this one.
Where are the maps?
I won't repeat the criticisms of others.What did National Geographic think they were doing when they published a coffee-table history book under the title of "Atlas"?

Historical it may be, this ain't no atlas.
This atlas hardly does National Geographic credit.Far better is Hammond's American history atlas, a slim 8 �" x 11" paper- (cardboard-) bound edition.Better than either is the 1966 American Heritage atlas, a splendid maroon slipcased hardbound volume.It features superbly realized maps of all eras.Important wars - especially the Revolution and the Slaveholders' Rebellion ("Civil War") - are illustrated by clear maps as well as panoramic representations of major battles.The mapsare accompanied by brief informative texts, rather an innovation for the time.This first-rate production (The American Heritage Pictorial Atlas of United States History) isn't easy to find nowadays.

Beautiful
Although obviously intended for high school level, the text presents a great deal of fascinating historical information on the medeival Islamic world (even including the Bulgars, the Timurids, etc.), often rare to find elsewhere; it marks the inadequacy of Islamic studies in English that there are few scholarly books on Islamic history with the same breadth of scope. Although some statements concerning earlier Islamic history run counter to orthodox Muslim belief, the author is undoubtedly one of the best writers of Muslim history. The pictures and maps are also great.

lovely and impressive
Being a scholar of comparative religion but feeling lacking in my understanding of the general progress of Islam as a cultural (vice religious) phenomenon, I searched far and wide for a work on Islam akin to those of the Cultural Atlases series. Nicolle's work answered the mail admirably. The work is exceptionally well composed, indicative of a pleasing format and supporting browsing as well as research. Though the work cannot be called profound, factual information of considerable depth is nevertheless available to the targeted searcher. The book is admittedly weak on the theological underpinnings of the religion, though it nowhere claims to be an exploration of Islam as a religion per se: for such information, may I recommend Michael Jordan's handsome "Islam: An Illustrated History" (London: Carlton, 2002). I flatly disagree with those who claim that Ruthven's work is superior to Nicolle's: indeed, I found the former to be boring; superficial in its rigid obedience of the two-to-four-pages rule for every article; and, one might say, helter-skelter in its overall organization. While spelling errors in Nicolle (e.g., proselatize for proselytize) and typographical errors do not impress me, I shouldn't be too harsh, given that modern typesetting and typography for the consumption of the demanding twenty-first-century reader present such formidable challenges. (That, and a certain je ne sais quoi that probably deals with some intractable element of depth, justify my withholding of the fifth rating star.) Well done, Dr. Nicolle.

Masterpiece of illustrated history
This book is overflowing with beautiful maps, fascinating photos and insightful descriptions. I find Nicolle's Historical Atlas of the Islamic World to be one of the best introductions to the history of the Muslim world. The layout is astounding, and puts much pricier atlases, even the Oxford Atlas of World History, to shame.

ingles hecho facil
This book is great if you are teaching english to non-speakers, the pronounciation is there, the translation, easy words, all the basics for starters. Pronouns, verbs, adverbs all easy grammatical sentences with explanations for the use and most of the rules for changing the endings for plurals, explains the masculine and femine use of words as well.I teach adults the english language and have bought this book to help me help them and as it turns out the students have liked it so much I have had to keep reordering for them to have one of their own.

It's the best there is! (El mejor!)
In my opinion this is the best book available for Hispanics who want to learn English. I myself speak both English and Spanish and have taught English to Hispanics for 5-1/2 years. I am also a professional librarian. I have looked through large library ESL and Spanish/English language collections and have spent many hours at big-name bookstores looking for materials for my students. Nothing I saw is comparable to Ingl�s Hecho F�cil.

Great Arizona Topo map
We needed to locate some undeveloped property in the Show Low Pines area.This map and the internet were great in assisting us.We use our Colorado and Wyoming ones all the time.They are a great resource for people who like to do beyond the end of the road!

GREAT map for exploring Arizona
I used this map when exploring Arizona on two separate occasions.Delorme makes these maps for nearly all states in the US.If you're ever going to explore a state - USE THIS MAP by Delorme.It's well organized, provides information on parks, unique spots like waterfalls, historical sites, etc.You can also find obscure roads not normally seen on tourist maps.I bought the Delorme maps for Colorado, New York, and Virginia as well.

REVISED EDITION IS EVEN BETTER
Jack Purcell is pretty thorough in his review.As for the nitpickers, if they really want to get names and numbers of backroads, they can contact the forest service and BLM, as well as the park service, who publishes maps of logging roads, and other limited use roadways.At 1:250,000, who could expect a name or number tag anyway of off-the-beaten trail access roads anyway?Read more
