5-0 out of 5 stars A bundle of humourous and thought provoking phrases
Statements like 'Behold the tortoise, he only makes progress when he sticks his neck out!' and more give the reader food for thought with a little humour in a world where everything is safe and how it should be. Read this, and maybe you will gain the inspiration to try something different, something outrageous, something courageous. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for lovers of words
The contents may be offensive to some readers. So be it! Words and their usage are part of our language. As an aside, I'd like to see someone take on the task of relating euphemisms to short titles of Congressional bills: Leave No Child Behind Act; Fair Tax Act; The USA Patriot Act; Help American Vote Act...

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Sad
Overemphasis on sexual material.Would not have bought the book had I known this.
5-0 out of 5 stars A fun reference book that may make you blush...
This is a good reference book for readers and writers, and possibly courageous public speakers.A thematic index at the back of the book makes finding the right term easy. The entries provide concise, clear definitions, as well as quoted sources which add clarity as to the origin and usage of the word or phrase. These authorities are cross-referenced to an author/work bibliography in the front of the book, handy for those who wish to conduct further research. Many of the euphemisms deal with sexual topics, a possible commentary on either the repressive or playful nature of our social mores. Most of the words and phrases are modern, at least within the last fifty years, but some obsolete terms are included, often to show comparison to current usage. While not an exhaustive study of euphemisms, or a substitution for a good slang dictionary, this is a great reference book to have, to use, and to read -- just for the fun of it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Common wisdom, prayers, and more inspirational thoughts
The Soul's Book Of Answers by Carol Bolt is a unique work not meant to be read in the traditional manner. It is comprised of aphorisms, quotes from famous figures, common wisdom, prayers, and more inspirational thoughts that touch upon all aspects of life. To use it, one meditates upon a question, opens the book to a page that feels appropriate, and reads the thought on that page, which can be applied as one's answer. One would be surprised how relevant general advice such as "Do not be overly concerned to change [others'] opinion[s]" can be to a given problem of the heart. Also very highly recommended is Carol Bolt's previous work - Love's Book Of Answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing Answers for Your Soul
Carol Bolt's books are not only intriguing; they have beautiful covers that capture your attention. They can be left on a coffee table and will definitely get the conversation going at parties. This cover has a blue suede feel and a swirl of navy blue that reminds me of a ribbon. The picture here at Amazon does not do this book justice. This book feels good in your hands and would capture any bibliomaniacs interest. 3-0 out of 5 stars Ok for novelty. Divining is another story...
The book has beautiful binding and is very nice for show and handling. I own many books of this type used for divination through bibliomancy and practice this magick daily.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm a standup comic and I contribute jokes to Judy for her joke books.
I'm a standup comic and I contribute jokes to Judy for her joke books.I've connected with many new fans who found me through the jokes in Judy's books.I'm glad I let Judy use my material, because despite my film and tv credits, it was Judy's use of my jokes that convinced my family that maybe this comedy thing of Basil's might pan out into something real. Thanks Judy. Her books are also great for speechwriters who need a joke about a specific topic. Her books are organized like Bartlett's Quotations, but with jokes that are actually funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am one of the contributers
I noticed that someone claims that Judy Brown has illegally published comedians jokes in Comedy Thesaurus.I am one of the contributors to the book and I can say that I sent Ms. Brown 15 jokes, at no charge and with my permission, to include in her book The Comedy Thesaurus.I have also contributed jokes to her book, Squeaky Clean Comedy.I must say that my dealings with Judy have been a pleasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Through the Past Darkly
With the recent Narnia movie, cranking out Lewisiana has almost become a cottage industry. With the plethora of titles, one is hard pressed to know where to begin. Some reviewers consider this book a bit of flack shoved off on the gullible public hungry to read more. I take the opposite tack.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gems from a master essayist
I recently gave a copy of this slim book to the person on this planet whom I most respect. It's easy to overlook a book like this: the essays are short and they don't advance our understanding of Lewis's faith to any appreciable degree. But what words of wisdom we find therein! Our civilization possesses no one of Lewis's caliber today, and a reading of this delightful book should sadden as much as it enlightens.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not really a review, sorry
I do not own this book, and am not reviewing it.But there is a quote from the essay "On Living In An Atomic Age" that is going around once again, following the London bombings of July 2005.I am putting it here on Amazon so interested parties Googling to find the source of the quote might have an easier time of it:

5-0 out of 5 stars A Jefferson book for all Americans
This is a book that all Americans should read now, and re-read over one's lifetime. The editor has done an incredible job of distilling from over 20,000 of Jefferson's letters his elevating, illumining and inspiring thoughts. It is an insight into the man, the times and the country he so deeply loved and so tirelessly worked to create, nurture, expand and sustain. So many times I found myself exclaiming a "Wow!" over a quote, sometimes smiling, sometimes tearing-up, wistfully, at the depth of his soulful wisdom. Do not hesitate to bring this gem into your home, your library, and your heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feel the truth of Thomas Jefferson
Light and Liberty reveals the true Thomas Jefferson in all his intuitive grandeur. Thomas Jefferson envisioned and revealed the very qualities that made America evolve into the new model of government and society. In reading his innermost thoughts and ideals we can feel a small glimpse of the light that has, and should guide our country and all humanity into the future.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must have refrence guide for every THINKING American
After reading James Bovards "The Bush Betrayal" and then reading this excellent collection of letters and thoughts from Thomas Jefferson it is inescapable to not see the warnings of as well as the fears of the founding fathers of this nation were very real and foreseen, and that they did their best to set in place as many safe guards as they could in the world they lived in, to try and protect as well as warn the future generations of this nation that we must never turn a blind eye toward those in government.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not the edition you're looking for
This edition offers only a small selection of Lady Gregory's _Gods and Fighting Men_, plus the book itself is about 2" by 4".In other words, this book is really a souvenir--not a text to be read. You probably want to get the full text of _Gods and Fighting Men_ instead.

2-0 out of 5 stars Know what you are getting...
In case your one of the 96% who never really looks at the "size" of a book when you order it, make sure you do for this one. It's only a pocket version of Lady Gregory's book, and, although the website does not tell you so, this is an ABRIGDED version. 3-0 out of 5 stars Decent translation, but "compiled"
I have read this book and find that the first part is fairly accurate when I compare it with other translations of the stories about Finn and the Fianna. However, I read the notes section for the stories about Cuchulainand noticed that Lady Gregory states that she compiled these stories, whilethe book jacket states she translated them.Unfortunately she has usedseveral different sources for one of my favorite tales (Deirdre and Naoise)and it makes me wonder how accurate her version of this tale is.She hassome elements in the ending that I have found attributed to later versionsof the tale (she uses the later version of Deirdre stabbing herself insteadof her dashing her head on the rocks), but the fact that she admits in hernotes to editing and compiling the tales as she sees fit makes me wonderwhat else she edited because she didn't like.Personally, I am searchingfor a translation that is more accurate when it comes to Irish tales, because I feel that the original meaning becomes muddled when tales areedited to match a person's taste. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good gift
This book is a collection of antidotes about specific rich people, interspersed with quotes about rich people as a whole. It's a cute book, and a good gift, but not the type of book I would have purchased for myself.

4-0 out of 5 stars I can't`afford to review this book, but I liked it.
This is not really a book, but rather a collection of highly entertaining anecdotes about people who have a) far more money than me, and b) far more money than a lot of them know what to do with. The Diet Coke foibles of Christina Onassis are the most fun, but she has lots of company in the crazed rich person department ... Read more
