4-0 out of 5 stars Speech fodder
I bought this book because I had writer's block while preparing for a Toastmaster's speech. I needed to intersperse some storytelling into a speech about attitudes. Well, along with hundreds of quotes, the book contains short stories and anectdotes on dozens of insightful subjects such as ability and attitude to winners and youth. You'll find openers, closers and materials for in-between. There are no prepared speeches, but there is plenty of information available to help develop and deliver a speech that will impact your audience.5-0 out of 5 stars Speaker's Sourcebook II

4-0 out of 5 stars great quotes, fun book
I think the quotes are a great collection and that Stephens' comments are refreshing compared to the usual quote-book or website that just notes the name and no detail.I like these books:).

1-0 out of 5 stars Great words interrupted by the inane compiler
This book contains a lot of great quotes from great and not-so-great women throughout history.Unfortunately, Ms. Stephens sees fit to interject her half-witted commentary after every citation, apparently believing herself fit company for the women she admires. It's filler, and bad filler at that.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Collection of Art and Quotes
My mother sent this to me for Mother's Day, and it is the best book I have ever seen of this kind.My mom sends me this type of thing frequently. This book, I couldn't stop looking at the artworks and reading the quotes. My daughter who is four also loved it and picked out all the little girls that she said were her.It would really touch the heart of every mother.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional artwork displaying the maternal child bond
Although we are to never judge a book by it's cover, I am so glad that I did just that.I instantly fell in love with this book's famous print of "The Three Ages" by Gustav Klimt on the jacket. As I scanned thepictures within I knewthe book was coming home with me, and that I wouldbe ordering and sending a copy to all of my friends and family. As amother and an obstetrical nurse it was a pure pleasure to find that in mostof the portraits selected the mother is shown nursing her infant, theperfect bond. The phrases, quotes and narrations are beautifuly chosen andarranged as progression through a childs life. A superb gift for any womanand a delight to find on any coffee table! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Between Me and Life There is A Mist of Words Always"
Oscar Wilde once said "Drama is the meeting place of art and life." In this essential, compact volume Ralph Keyes leaves a trail to that corner by gathering the flamboyant author's thorniest, at times most insightful quotes and anecdotes. Keyes uses Wilde's plays, reviews, letters, interrogations, even conversational repartee (given its own section) which remained Wilde's signature to his time.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars little too much
as prolific a writer as louis l'amour was, there are all kinds of great quotes, but with as many books and stories as the man has, they can be tough to look up. so it's great that his daughter compiled this collection. i had to only give it four stars for 2 reasons: 1-you'll find no quotes from his single poetry collection or from interviews; 2-when you write as much as l'amour did, you are going to end up repeating yourself. that's understandable, but when editing a collection of quotes, you can leave out quotes that simply say the same thing in just about the same words.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nearly a 5-star
The only thing that prevents this book from being a 5-star book is the limited number of works the quotes were taken from. Many wonderful bits of wisdom were missed in quoting mostly from the Sackett series and some of the "major" novels. This book would be good for everyone whether they read L'Amour or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trail of Memories

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Tool but Often Puzzling
Seldes's work on this book is admirable. It is a good tool for finding what notable people had to say about most things. The index is useful for just such research, and the value in that is that this volume has a way of directing you to further material you may need.As a book of aphorictic expression, Seldes's Great Thoughts is entertaining too.It is a worthy read from cover to cover just to see what he thought "great" enough to include.I found the alphabetical-by-author format practical and, as said, the index works well for searching out subject material. What I find strange about the book is its puzzling tendency to value some patently impractical thoughts that are clearly not "great" or even all that influential, on the surface anyway, as well the absence of some historically significant material. No doubt Seldes had his logic, political and social, and that is also an interesting aspect of reading the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars politcally liberal great thoughts
I bought the first edition of this book when I was 16 and have destroyed it through use over the years. His great thoughts are all of a progressive nature, and show modern conservatives in an ugly light.
5-0 out of 5 stars There are great thoughts but some are not great at all
This gathering of quotations is a tribute to Seldes who loved to read and think and gather the best of what he thought. But all the thoughts here are far from great, and much the great great majority of what is ' great in thought ' is not here, in part because aphorisms, small sentences and paragraphs can take us only so far in thought. To develop a line of thought, or a whole argument, or a real essay in thought is something which cannot be done in a brief remark. "Sayings " as the saying goes" are not Literature" Or rather "not the greatest Literature"

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of two indispensable books for scholars
As both a teacher of intelligence and national security classes as well as a writer about intelligence, Lathrop's book is only the second indispensable book I have come across. The other is Polmar and Allen's Spy Book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource!
This is a rare type of book--unique, fun, and useful all at the same time.To my knowledge, no other book brings together so many quotes and comments about the world of intelligence. These quotes, along with Mr. Lathrop's comments, provide a guide to how intelligence works--or doesn't work--and will help educate anyone interested in spying and intelligence.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Reference
A majority of Americans do not understand intelligence, given its necessarily sensitive and exclusionary nature.Greater news coverage of the subject, generally in the context of national security issues, does not appear to have enlightened a public that prefers to view things through an increasingly partisan political lens.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great gift book!
Allen is both funny and kind, as all who hear him speak quickly learn. So it's no surprise that his selection of sayings and anecdotes reflect those virtues. This is a great gift book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Did not live up to title
