5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
This book is short and sweet (the quotes are spaced out on the pages and they include photographs). This was informative of areas Ghandi does not talk of much in his autobiography, especially his views on non-violence. Inspiring quotes that get you thinking.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY POWERFUL WORDS OF WISDOM
Once I saw this book advertised, I remembered the author's name as the man who made the super motion film "Ghandi" and I know that it was going to be a good book.I must say that I am very pleased wityh it and these words of wisdom can really be put to use in our daily lifestyle and help improve ourselves to become better persons regardless of religion or ethnic background. These inspiring quotes are well documented in appropriate sections such as : Daily Life, Co-operation, Non-violence, Peace, Faith etc.I would like to leave you with one of these valuable quotes for your kind consideration.5-0 out of 5 stars Comparable to Proverbs
It is like the Book of Proverbs in the Bible.Gandhi's seemingly superhuman insight on virtue is indeed deeply moving.I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to hear many of the words of the wisest. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Stocking Stuffer
For those lovers of hard boiled fiction, this slight book lets you flip through some of the best lines and passages from Chandler's novels. Easier than going back to your underlined copies. Whilea little pricey , the truth is worth it---on marriage:"For two people in a hundred,it's worth it."; on Hollywood:"In Hollywoord, anything can happen, anything at all."; on night:"It was night. The world outside the windows was a black world."

5-0 out of 5 stars A scholarly book in tune
I bought this book for myself and a copy formy granddaughter, age 13. She had played a leading role in Midsummer's Night two year's ago at her St. Paul elementary school. The experience won her over to Shakespeare. Since I didn't start reading Shakespeare before age 18, I wondered if Coined by Shakespeare would be too far out-of-tune with the romance novels that she was devouring.Well, I've read it now. It is a dandy. A real banger, as Hardy would put it.Rarely does a scholarly book meet the needs of anyone less versed than a PhD. This book, I'm making wager, will charm a 13 year old word lover. We just finished a Minnesota blizzard.I'm tickled that Shakespeare coined "gust."

5-0 out of 5 stars The welcome result of lengthy and painstaking research
Coined By Shakespeare: Words & Meanings First Penned By The Bard is the welcome result of lengthy and painstaking research conducted under impeccable standards of scholarship. Readers can also enjoy testing their knowledge of Shakespeare linguistic trivia through a series of quizzes which are interspersed throughout. Coined By Shakespeare is a "must" for all Shakespeare enthusiasts and word buffs.

4-0 out of 5 stars A little Shakespeare dictionary
This little book (from Merriam Webster, the big dictionary people) is definitely fun.It is part of a series about how words have been used in different times and places. This volume concentrates on the words"invented" by Shakespeare - the authors estimate that there arein the vicinity of 1,500 such words and this book probably includes acouple hundred examples.Admittedly, there is lots of room for judgementhere and sometimes the authors note that, but many times they statetheories as fact. This tendency keeps my rating below five stars. The bookis organized with a chapter for each letter of the alphabet - and aShakespeare trivia quiz at the end of each chapter.Again, fun, but bewareof theories - on the other hand, maybe one of these questions will make itto "Do You Want To Be A Millionaire?".It is not a book forreading straight through, but it is perfect to fill short periods here andthere that keep you waiting. You will be amazed at the words included suchas ADVERTISING, ALLIGATOR, INVESTMENT, OBSCENE, PUKE, PUPPY DOG and ZANY. There are also some examples that you probably won't recognize. The textgives sites for the usage in Shakespeare's plays. If you are interestedenough in this subject to have made it to the end of this review, then buyit, its worth the price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome addition to American History Reference material
Of course, it would be silly for me to write a review of the quotes themselves in this book, but the sheer volume of material warrants this book 5 stars. Moreover, the quotes are sub-indexed by category (education, greed...etc.) which allows for easier access to speech writing and quoting.A welcome addition to my collection of early American History references. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars "The New Dictionary of Beliefs" would be more accurate
After reading a bunch of reviews for different quotation books (mostly by the seemingly very knowledgeable Rob Kall), I decided on this one and bought the 1961 (on the title page, 1960 on the copyright page) edition for [ a cheap amount]. Looking through it, I am quite surprised that this is the same book that received such positive reviews below. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Quotation Books
This is one of the best quotation books of all time. My oldest edition is at least 100 years old. And at that time, it was probably the best, most useful quotation book in existence (except possibly for the Allibone set of prose and poetry quotations, published in the 1880s. It set the standard for contemporary subject oriented quotations. Prior to Tryon Edward's Dictionary of Thoughts, most quotation books were either organized by author, or, if organized by subject, included turgid, lifeless quotations. This dictionary has great thoughts, stimulating ideas and a fantastic selection of both subjects and quotations for the many subjects. Since it is not hard to find used at a reasonable price, this is one very much worthincluding in any library. I've given out a number of copies as gifts (I buy them when I find them at the right price in the used book stores I haunt in my travels. 5-0 out of 5 stars The best quotation collection ever
As a public speaker, teacher and writer, I have collected about 20 booksof quotations. Many are good, but this one is the best. It is extremelycomprehensive and eclectic, without being pedantic. Although some othersources have more contemporary quotations, if I could only have one book ofquotes, this would be the one. It is informative, entertaining, and mostimportantly, useful. ... Hilarious! Great reading. I highly recommend this book! Though many imagined images about Dubbya come to mind as I read this book, I do wish it featured Ocker's hillarious illustrations which I found along with quotes in the George W. Bush Coloring Book!

5-0 out of 5 stars More Fun
BR>This is more of a fun book than the first so buy more of it, read more of it, and enjoy more of it.5-0 out of 5 stars the truth is always easy to read
This book, including the first volume, are he perfect way to show the American public just how stupid this man is (George W.) How can you expect some one to run a country when they cant even speak coherently.I laughed at every page yet couldn't shake the feeling that it scares me out of my mind that our leader, who didnt even receive the majority of our votes and is now forgetting our own counrty and turning the attention to a war that will benefit no one but himself and people like him, actually has the support of many Americans whos greatest concerns are God, country, and the American way of life. And to top it off, Bush thinks these books are funny! Hes proud that his words have already been collected and publised. We should not only look at our president with disgust but at our selves as well for giving some one like this the power to ruin our lives. If a total of less than 200 pages with only a couple of quotes on each page can so easily degrade our president imagin what a full length book could reveal.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars King Speeches
I've searched for speeches by Dr.Martin Luther King and I was please with the choices available through Amazon. This is a good look back in history.

4-0 out of 5 stars Being one with history...
MLK: The Martin Luther King tapes is the first Audio CD I've ever purchased.I am a new student of our great orators, and Martin, from what I've read, is the best. One of my only regrets concerning Dr. King's speeches is that I haven't been able to hear them all as spoken by his eloquent, yet powerful oratory style. This Audio CD has eliminated my concern.I can now hear Dr. King anytime I want to at work. I feel like I'm right there, listening with his audience. If this product is any indication of what to expect from future Audio CD's by other great orators such as JFK, FDR, and even Winston Churchill, then count me in! The only reason for the four stars as opposed to five stars is due to the rudely shortened eulogy of Robert Kennedy during Dr. King's funeral. There should have been more of it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Choice for Buffy Fans
I thought this was a fun little book. It's nice to just flip through and laugh at some of the quotes in the show.

3-0 out of 5 stars
The content of this book could fit in a single web page, and since essentially none of it is original material, I figure it should be evaluated based on which quotes were selected and how they are presented. The presentation is a high level grouping of quotes into topics, and within each topic there is the most obvious/straightforward listing of quotes-- what was said and who said it.I personally do not find the selection of quotes to be particularly representative of what I felt while watching the show were the most salient or memorable moments or dialog; however, I do think it is far better than just randomly pulling quotes out of the scripts, and so is worth consideration.Of course the book has value as statement of appreciation of the show; I have no idea the degree to which this book serves that purpose better than alternatives...

1-0 out of 5 stars Please, save your money
This book has so many errors in it I don't know where to begin. Most of the information is wrong.Even if the quote is correct usually who said it or the episode name is wrong. If you are a true Buffy fan you will remember all of the quotes in this book and if not they will be meaningless to you. One good thing about it is that on a day when you have nothing else to do you can sit there and correct all of the mistakes in it.It is possible that I am being overly critical.I am a big enough of a Buffy freak that I can recite all 144 episode names in order so Buffy is one thing that I am very picky about. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars charmed by gardens
The best word for this book is "charming." It will satisfy anyone who enjoys gardens and fabulous illustrations and quotes. If you are a fan of Laura Stoddart's artwork, then this book is a must have.It is a great not-too-small-not-too-big size, excellent quality, and makes a great conversation piece on the coffee table. You don't have to be a gardener yourself to enjoy Stoddart's charming collection. I live in an 11 story apartment, with no yard of my own, but reading this book makes me feel as though I've taken a trip to the countryside.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet humor....
THE SWEET LIFE is a short book filled with somewhat profound thoughts Laura Stoddart compiled from famous and not-so-famous sources and beautiful illustrations she apparently drew. She thanks her father for the words and her mother for the pictures. Those familiar with A CHILD'S GARDEN OF VERSES might appreciate THE SWEET LIFE as the adult version of a garden of verses.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just Trivia, by fermed
I should not have read it as I did: cover to cover in one sitting. A brief sitting, for sure, for it is a tiny book (4 x 6 inches, the size of a standard photograph) of 200 pages, each containing the opening lines of a famous book. But oh, what an experience it was. Like eating the most exquisite candies, one by one, till the box was empty. Listen: "On top of everything, the cancer wing was number 13." 5-0 out of 5 stars Chiasmus = Absolute Truth ?
For the nutshell skip down to ---THE POINT---.If you like to get lost in circular reasoning, by all means read the whole thing.Just be patient ifyou do; it may seem as if I've gone off on a tangent, but I promise to comefull circle. In order to deal with story problems we are taught thatmathematical functions have lingual transitions. An example of this iswould be: = means "as", and 2 = terms are said to be"like".As with translations between any two languagesinevitably something is lost in the transition. In this instance we seethat while = means "as" or "like", neither"as" nor "like" means =.In grammar we are taught that"as" and "like" are keywords for simile (which meanscomparison, from the Latin "similis" meaning similar).Whichleads to the next issue; Do the laws of mathematics have a lingualtransition? One of the most fundamental laws of math is: A x B = B x A;which would read: the product of A and B is like the product of B and A. While porcelain is the product of heat and clay, the product of heat andclay is not always like porcelain. The heat and the clay must have thesame value in order for the comparison to work.I have never learnedthe English translation for the absolute value sign used in mathematicalformulas, but I would imagine it would be "chiastic".Chiasmusseems to imply in its mathematical similarity that it is a capable vehiclefor absolute truths.Certainly this book is an insight into truth, orthis book is truth into insight, or maybe this truth is a book intoinsight, perhaps this insight is a book into truth, possibly this insightis truth into a book, or it could be that this truth is insight into abook.I seem to have gotten even myself confused.Lao-Tzu wrote that"He who talks does not know, he who knows does not talk", he alsowrote that "The Way of which we are able to speak, is not the Way ofwhich we speak".So why all the words if they are all in vain?TheBuddhists have an insightful metaphor (defined by Aristotle as: Theintuitive perception of the similarity in dissimilars) for the reason forwords despite their futility "fingers pointing at the moon" (themoon symbolizing enlightenment in Buddhism). ------THE POINT?------ Simplythat this is a much better book, than this is a review.Dr. Grothe'sfingers apparently do a much better job at pointing to the moon than domine.Where my words have led you deep into the murky waters of samsara, his become the Jewel in the lotus and the lotus in the Jewel.I hope Ihaven't driven you away from what truly is an inspired book.*** P.S.Sorry Mardy, I had to, Jer.1:7

5-0 out of 5 stars NEVER KISS A FOOL OR LET A KISS FOOL YOU
What a great little book.If you like wordplay, philosphy, history and pop culture, you'll love reading chiamus quotes from then and now.Chiasmus stretchs and delights the mind.I bought the book as a guide to my teenage daughter...you know...for the kissing part, but it has alsobecome a delightful source of information as well as entertainment.Wehave fun trying to make up our own chiasmus lines. If you subscribe toGrothe's weekly Chiasmic Quotes...you'll discover anew puzzle and antedote. It always gives a moment of thought or mirth;giving new pleasure to the announcement to 'you've got mail'. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Dictionary of Early Christian Beliefs
This dictionary is a MUST for anyone who wishes to get a fresh new view of Christian doctrine, and learn what the early Christians who were taught by the Apostles themselves believed. It is a compilation of writings on over 700 subjects, most of them preceded by appropriate Scriptures.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding reference to start study on early church!
What a tool for study! If you are not an Ante-Nicene scholar, this book is a great source to start studying what the early church taught.
5-0 out of 5 stars Informative Information on the Early Church Father's Teachings
It is often difficult to sit and read through the extensive writings of the early Church fathers on key doctrines such as justification by faith, baptism, the trinity, or the person and work of Jesus Christ. However, David Bercot has done nearly the impossible by taking the writings of the early church outside of the New Testament and has given us the dictionary of early Christian beliefs.
