5-0 out of 5 stars Tons of entertaining quotes from tennis greats!
You Can Quote me on Thatby Paul Fein is loaded with entertaining quotes from all the great tennis players, many of their coaches, their families, and even other celebrities. From the Foreword by Billie Jean King in which she states " No one and nothing is spared", to the 35 chapters dealing with various topics such as #6.-The Fame Game, and #15. - You've Come A Long Way, Baby!, I was hooked. The quotes are quick and easy to read, with remarkable documentation of who said what to whom and when.I especially liked the nasty comments between John McEnroe and Ivan Lendl--i.e. "I've got more talent in my pinkie than Lendl has in his whole body."--John McEnroe.(so politically incorrect these days!).Arthur Ashe's 1970 quote that "Women's tennis won't draw flies.", couldn't have been more wrong, surprisingly coming from one of the greatest endorsers of the game. But my favorite quote, coming from Martina Hingis is "I like everything about tennis; the games, the courts, the competition, and doing everything you can to win. It's such a beautiful sport."Anyone who enjoys playing tennis, watching tennis, or hearing about the good and bad boys and girls of tennis will truly enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars That's Entertainment!
Paul's books never disappoint! The inside information, entertaining anecdotes and insights which his books provide make them a must read for every tennis fan and player. His books make a great gift for every tennis lover.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book you will enjoy a lot
In the foreword, Billie Jean King writes, "You Can Quote Me on That" contains hundreds of funny, informative, and provocative quotes by and about present and past stars on 35 different topics. No one and nothing is spared."I agree completely!I'm a big tennis fan, and I had never heard or read 80 percent of these quotes before.

Editorial Review

Though Emerson said "Quotation confesses inferiority," and Thomas Fuller advised "Search not Authors to say what thou canst as well say thyself," E.M. Cioran warned "Beware of thinkers whose minds function only when they are fueled by a quotation," and Vauvenargues contended that "Other people's wit does not entertain us for long," there is always the viewpoint of Samuel Richardson, who said "We are wise by other people's experience," and Ovid's, who believed "It is right to learn even from one's enemies."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Quotation Book Ive Used
Ive used a lot of quotation books, but if i had to choose one, this would the one. Easy to use, sorted by topic and a great index (not as large as Bartlett's best still nice). Only thing thats kind of annoying is that the pages are on the upper inside corner of the page. It can be a bother when trying to flip to a page, but i got over it. All in all, i think this is the best quotation book out their, especially for the paperback price.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure, by fermed
I have several quotation reference books, but this is the one that sits on my desk because it is by far my favorite. It contains a good mixture of recent, old, and ancient sayings, organized by themes. Many quotations are cross-referenced by theme, and others by similarity of structure ("Nothing succeeds like success," by Dumas, leads to "Nothing succeeds like excess" by Wilde.) There are over 20,000 quotes, meticulously referenced and often containing rich ancillary material. For instance, the famous "I'll have what she is having" is cited under the general theme of "Sex;" it notes that the author was Nora Ephron (1941--) in the film "When Sally Met Harry," 1989. Said by a woman diner to the waiter after observing Meg Ryan, at another table, acting out an orgasm.

5-0 out of 5 stars More light than usual in Lebrecht's little-known collection
Lebrecht gives life to these composers/musicians much in the same spirit that they gave of themselves in their own works. In many ways, these stories are as informative as some music history texts. From Bach toStravinsky, these stories will make you laugh and cry.If you've grownweary of Lebrecht's more recent darkoutlooks on the future of classicalmusic, this book looks back on the sunnier days.Full of humorous, informative and touching stories, you won't regret you bought this! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Wit and Wisom of Mark Twain
A hilarious book of qoutes, sayings, and one-liners only Mark Twain could have the genious to create.5-0 out of 5 stars Amusing and Timeless Reading
Mark Twain captures human nature at it's best and worst in this book. The collection of quotes by Twain "alphabetically"comment honestly on topics ranging from adultery to government to money to youth. Suchinsight into humanity rarely comes along in a lifetime (or severallifetimes!) His words in truly reflect society during his lifespan and, asI have reread this book several times, the passages reflect society today. This book is an "easy read" as it contains memorable quotes aswell as portions of a variety of speeches, papers and books/stories Mr.Twian wrote. You can read the entire book at one sitting or glance throughit if you have a few minutes to spare and still feel the impact of hiswritings , thus finding yourself highly amused by his insight. You can pickup the book again at a later time and enjoy it as much as before. The"authors"/collectors/writers of this book are to be applauded. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "Nebraska is proof that Hell is full...
...and the dead walk the earth."Just one of 174 pages of anecdotes, quips, and cynical observations of the jaded traveler. And not to pick on the Midwest, on New York:"If a day goes by and I haven't been slain, I'm happy."Or "New Jersey looks like the back of an old radio."
4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect gift for frequent travelers (including yourself)
We loved this humorous collection of international grumbles about the mixed joys of travel. Curmudgeonly quotes from a wide-ranging assortment of grumpy notables from George Bernard Shaw to Dave Barry cover topics from specific destinations, from Akron to Winnipeg, plus notations on food, transportation, and accommodations. Great little book for bathroom reading, bedside tables, and whenever you're feeling grouchy and need a smile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reflects the answer allready inside you
This book is a really nice personal wisdom tool- if you can take a couple of quality minuets in your day & use it as instructed and seriously(without asking lite-hearted or stupid questions) it will give some pretty insightful replies for you to ponder on. I understand that Carol Bolt has also released "The Souls Book Of Answers" which answers more "open-ended" type questions(i.e. "what should I do about....."). This form of divination is relativly new to me, having studied the Tarot for several years, but I find it a refreshing break for using from time to time. The truth about all forms of divination(Tarot, Crystal Balls, Dice, Books, etc.) is that they are not "special" in themselves, but they help you to connect to the answer(s) deep within you. There are some fortunate individuals in this world who already possess highly developed "sixth senses", but for the rest of us there are tools like "The Movie Book Of Answers". Try it & find out for yourself.

2-0 out of 5 stars What? I'm confused!
Either it didn't work for me, I'm stupid, or it's a piece of [junk]. Because when I asked it questions, I got stupid answers that no one would understand!

4-0 out of 5 stars Think: The Magic 8 Ball but with Movie Quotes
"The Movie Book of Answers" compiled by Carol Bolt is pretty much a cross between Bartlett's Famous Quotations and The Magic 8 Ball. The process for using this volume is the same with which Virgil's epic poem "The Aeneid" was used in ancient times: you hold the book closed, take 10-15 seconds to concentrate on a closed-end question, stroke the edge of the pages (yes, that is in the instructions) and when you sense the time is right, you open the book and PRESTO the right answer will be there before you.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent reference
Well worth the price of the book - excellent collection of quotes. Wonderful source of reference. I look forward to "wearing it out" as one other reader has!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for writers/speakers
A lot of quote books focus on the timeless and famous or the "witty" and not-so-meaningful. Peter's Quotations is a clasic among public speakers and essayists because it focusses on what these people are likely to need. It addresses broad, abstract topics such as "kindness" but also lays out the lawyer jokes. The topics are a good mix of the immortal and the current and, while often witty, are never ridiculous or campy (well, almost never campy). I've used it for years as a debater and public speaker, as a coach, and as a teacher. The best indication I can give you of its outstanding usefulness is that I buy a new copy for my speech team every year because a graduating senior always steals the old one. I'm on my third personal copy because I've worn two others out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sharp and Pointed
Not a "real" quotation reference like, say, Bartlett's, but agreat compendium of mostly modern quotes. The book has a sharp, sassy, punchy, pointed sensibility (which only lags, unfortunately, in Dr. Peter'sown added asides which are uniformly below the standard of the rest of thebook). This is a quotation book that you will read cover to cover.Organization is handy so that when you want to find that pithy bon mot thatstruck you the last time you read the book, you'll be able to locate iteasily. Highly recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of quotes, maybe too many
There are all kinds of quotes from Einstein to all sorts of people in all sorts of situations including many that are meaningless to anyone other than the person that he spoke or wrote to. For example, here is a quote to the Lebach family: "Here in Pasadena it is like paradise....Always sunshine and fresh air, gardens with palm and pepper trees, and friendly people who smile at one and ask for autographs." Here is another quote, this one to Ernesta Marangoni "The happy months of my sojourn in Italy are my most beautiful memories."

I absolutely love this book, and the myriad of areas Albert Einstein touches upon.

2-0 out of 5 stars Deceptive Title
I thought this was going to have definitions of the various terms used by Shakespeare, but it only has lists and lists of insults.I admit many of the terms are somewhat straightforward, but I really was trying to find something that would "educate" me about how the insults came about and perhaps their meaning at that time.If you are looking for lists of insults, however, this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This is a fabulous little book that every high school English teacher should have in their arsenal. When the jock in the back row groans when you ask him to read aloud from Hamlet, call him a burly-boned clown. When the popular kid in the front row claims to have forgotten to read the assigned pages from Macbeth, call him Triton of the minnows.Okay, maybe don't, but using it to help you find the curses and insults within the texts, and therefore to help you point them out to your students, will definitely make Shakespeare more fun for them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful!Good Book!
Wayne Hill and Cynthia Ottchen have compiled a very useful list of insults from the works of the Master Bard himself!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Constant Treasure
I treasure this book! Not just a book of quotations -- in a series of annectdotes, mouthwatering morsels, that leave you hungry for more, this is a literary feast. It presents Ben Franklin in a way that few books can.The reason? It shows you the Franklin you want -- when you want him.The topics -- prejudice, slander, or party loyalty -- to name some, are clear, well-organized, and often witty. But these are not the main reasons I treasure the book. You might have excellent access to short squibbs on Warren Harding. The book draws its delight from the greatness of Franklin and the authors abiding appreciation of the First American. A possessor of the earlier edition, I promise you an inexhaustible treasure. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny
This book does exactly what the title says it does. All those quotes you use from time to time and never know the source are now a thing of the past. I wrote a book once called "The First Casualty", taken from the quote "The first casualty when war comes is truth." I looked it up in this book and there it all was--who said it, where and when and an assessment of the value to place on each attribution. The book is worth every penny you pay for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Verifiably Excellent
I was so impressed with a newspaper feature on Ralph Keyes's The Quote Verifier that I ordered the book right away. I was not disappointed. There are few books I have ever encountered that are more thoroughly researched -- and so entertaining. The book is either a conversation starter (or spoiler, depending on your audience). Keyes delights in debunking commonly held assumptions about famous quotes, but there's no malice. Just meticulous and entertaining research. He points out the evolution of quotations (often much like the children's game of Telephone). I love how this wonderful reference is organized: alphabetically according to key words, interspersed with special sections on those who are frequently quoted, and a "verdict" at the end of each entry to help the reader reach a decision on a quote's origin or evolution). Thus, a special section on Yogi Berra tracks down a bunch of alleged "Yogi-isms." You might be surprised. I was. Gems abound a nearly every page. And the research is cited in a way that makes it fun to learn the origin of a phrase (or the lack of such knowledge). An example is the famous phrase "Iron Curtain." It is commonly known that Winston Churchill used that phrase in a 1946 sppech about Soviet influence. But Keyes exhaustively points out a whole bunch of similar uses that occurred much earlier. Then he gives a verdict: "Many authors, one key publicist -- Winston Churchill." I loved reading the blurb on the phrase "fifteen minutes of fame" (is it Andy Warhol's? Hey, I don't want to give away the juicy tidbits) and on the phrase "May you live in interesting times" (is it really of Chineses origin?). And so many others. Keyes's book has delighted me so much I recently found it a worthy companion on a long trip. I recommend this book to teachers and professors (even just to educate students in acquiring a healthy skepticism), news reporters and editors, talk show hosts, and anyone interested in history or good conversation. It should be on every library shelf, both public and private.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MAGNIFICENT BOOK
The Quote Verifier is entirely magnificent. Who can resist this book?I can't stop reading it.It's like eating peanuts: once you start you can't stop.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Don't Miss
As I grew up watching Dick Enberg on television, I always wondered how he could write, or reflect, on what was happening before his eyes so well?Clearly, this book helped me answer that question.Mr. Enberg has written a book of quotes unlike any other. He has included in his book, not only those famous quotes with which we are all so familiar, but also quotes that he heard in his every day life.It is this aspect of the book that I found so rewarding, and it is this aspect that helps separate it from similar themed texts. It showed me that one doesn't always have to look for the comedian, world leader, or athlete for guidance.Instead, one can simply listen to the common man (or woman) for answers, advice, and humor.Mr. Enberg realizes that fame doesn't guarantee these attributes, but more importantly, that a lack of fame doesn't prevent one from obtaining any or all of them. This is a fantastic book, put together by a man who can see great qualities in people from all walks of life.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for a few laughs
Its a nice book but if you are seriously looking for quotes to use in daily life or speeches (with references ect.) buy the Oxford dictionary of quotations. It's a much better investment.
