5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, one of the best, could've used an index
I give it 5 stars because it's one of the best of its kind. Compare, for example, a few pages to "The Curmudgeon Woman" and you may understand my meaning. The latter book is filled with weak minded quotes. I couldn't find a single intelligent epigram, let alone any caustic ones. On the other hand, it must take a certain degree of perseverance to weed out the blandest of quotes from the otherwise fine writers that Ms. Henley has researched. But the key to quality curmudgeon thinking is intelligence.
5-0 out of 5 stars Curmudgeons should like this one..
The only quotation book I've seen that is limited to Curmudgeons and it stays fairly true to its theme. It shows what a mean spirited and miserable bunch most curmudgeons are. They are more to be laughed at than laughed with. Most seem to have a very negative existance and it would be hard to imagine spending much time with any of them. How could you find them likeable when they don't even like themselves;but that would suit them just fine.If you are looking for wit, humor and great observations on life in general, you'll find this book lacking;except possibly the quotes from Twain. However,if you like self-centered satire emanating from a deep seated bitterness and loneliness ,then this is for you.5-0 out of 5 stars Great little book, tons of laughs per page
I'm a little young to know many of the people who are quoted in this book, but the hilarity of the quotes made me look up and start reading authors like George Shaw and Oscar Wilde. Those two names should give you an indication of the type of quotes you'll be reading in this little gem. Most are wry, a bit sarcastic, pessimistic and critical.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought as Music
Of all the (countless) responses to the Bard by writers over the last four hundred years or so, this one may be the most idiosyncratic; it may also be the most intelligent, insightful and inspired.BOTTOM: ON SHAKESPEARE reminds me a little bit of Burton's THE ANATOMY OF MELANCHOLY, first, in its encyclopedic bulk, and, second, in the preponderance of quotes in its pages.Louis Zukofsky was a world-class quoter (he's spiritual kin to Walter Benjamin, I think, who dreamed of writing-if that's the right word-a book composed entirely of quotations), and in BOTTOM, he cites everyone from Homer to Wittgenstein, and whole pages of Shakespeare, for the central purpose of elucidating what may be thought of as the book's thesis, which Zukofsky puts thus:Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A gem from the past
I too loved this book as a child. The simple repetetive text helps the reader find simple pleasures in everyday life.I am a teacher now and I have been searching for this book to use with my kindergarteners.I searched in the local libraries to no avail. Of the numerous books I possessed as a child, only two stand out in my memory. One is Happiness is a Warm Puppy and the other, Never Tease a Weasel. For a children's book to make such a lasting impression on so many people is remarkable. It is a shame it can't be put back in print for another generation to enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Happiness Is Seeing This Back In Print.
This was my favorite book when I was little my Mom would read it to me all the time and when I learned how to read I read it all the time, the cute book just gave you a happy warm feeling! I wish I still owned the book but unfortunately it was given away but I would love to find this book again not only for me for sentimental reasons but also for my niece! Please reprint this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth searching for
I remember this book so well that I can even recall how it smelled as I read it as a preschooler. This is a great little book--not outdated in the least, even almost 40 years after it first came out. My childhood copydisintegrated years ago, but I was lucky enough to find it secondhand formy own kids, who like it as much as I did. The wildly-colored pages are aprecursor to sixties "groovyness," but the text is years beforeits time. I think children need to be taught to appreciate the littlethings in life just as much as adults. It is possible (and maybe necessary)to find satisfaction in daily situations. One of my favorite pages in thebook shows Linus working on a jisaw puzzle. "Happiness is finding thelittle piece with the pink edge and part of the sky and the top of thesailboat." How true! 5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for teachers!
I use this book to help inspire my sixth grade students! Every day I select one quotation, and call it my "Thought of the Day." I ask a student to read it out loud, and then ask the class what they think the spearker is trying to tell us. After a brief discussion, I read the information about the speaker and discuss their contributions to the world. What a great way to teach students about important people of the past and present!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource
This very interesting book contains over 1,200 quotations from around the world. Some quotations are from ancient times; others are from the present day, yet they all seem current and meaningful. They cover many different categories, such as advice, humour, courage, and leadership. My son has used the book to look for quotations to include in his reports. I have found that he often gets caught up in reading the quotes (and forgets about his report). Besides being inspirational, these quotes provide an insight into the personalities and dreams of those who first spoke their words. It is a must for every family with children. Keep it on the bookshelf next to the dictionary.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great volume of a great man for your shelf on the founding
Benjamin Franklin is one of the great icons of the American Founding. He is truly one of the essential men who built our nation and deserves every praise we can heap on him. When we see images of the founders, they are all shown as old men, not how old they were in 1776.Franklin was really a generation older than most of the firebrands who led the Revolution. He was seventy when he signed the Declaration of Independence (John Adams was 41, George Washington 44, and Thomas Jefferson 33 on July 4, 1776) and eighty-one when he signed our Constitution as a member of the delegation from Pennsylvania. He was an amazing man.He was a successful printer, inventor, philanthropist, revolutionary, diplomat, and all around student of the world.
5-0 out of 5 stars Too Long Overlooked
This collection of Franklin's writing display his quick mind, mathematical gifts, great sense of humor, detachment in crisis, and the razor-sharp diplomatic mind which did more than supposed for the American cause (more so than than Adams and others thought). An American genius and a true seer of note. A book to be enjoyed again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jay Leno's "Headlines" Meets "News of the Weird"
Absolutely hilarious.I'm still chuckling about the muskrat that was taken to the Humane Society to be "euphemized."The quotes generally come from reputable newspapers and other sources. It would have been helpful if citation dates were included to look up the quote within its original context, though I expect most people aren't interested in researching the original citation.I have heard some of the quotes before and wonder if all of the quotes are true or original. ... Great Ceasar's Ghost! Roz Warren has scored a huge hit with her new quote book, "Women's Lip."Warren, who edited a groundbreaking and much loved series of women's humor anthologies & cartoon collections(see her "Women's Glib," "Women's Glibber, " &c.),raises the bar here for quote book quality in the spirit of her earlier"Glibquips." 5-0 out of 5 stars Heart to soul...good snippets of thoughts.
Yes, you can go back home. Most of these quotes come from books that either I remember reading as a young girl or that I read to my sons when they were growing up.As an adult/grown-up they have an entirely new meaning and perception that is heartrendering at times and at others very up lifting.I liked it and have purchased another to pass along.

5-0 out of 5 stars treasure this
this is a book to treasure.Ms. Gash has done a remarkable job compiling it.I've purchased this book for at least a dozen of my male friends, and they're not even gay.Don't let this one fall between the cracks. The lessons are inspirational on many levels; Gash's selections, geared to adults, from the greatest children's books are consistently entertaining and thought-provoking, no small feat in these crazy, meaning-challenged times.I can't say enough about this unique, compelling book, unless I already have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This is a really awesome idea. There are truly so many gems out there. Most of them you will remember reading too.I would like to see an even more indepth version with more children's books. But, what an awesome start. This could start the next great "Chicken Soup..." or "...for Dummies" movement in books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Affirmations that Work
I believe that making affirmations really help us to achieve our creative goals.Eric Maisel's book is full of affirmations that really work if we work them!I make this book part of my daily reading, and it makes every day start on a positive note.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well-indexed, good inspiration
Maisel is one of my favorite authors writing for artists. As in his other books, he shows here great sensitivity to artists' challenges. In his typical style, he doesn't pull punches with these affirmations -- it's clear an artist will never be fulfilled unless s/he gets up and WORKS.These affirmations support that process, without gluing up the works with the mystical overtones (mumbo-jumbo?) often associated with affirmations.5-0 out of 5 stars A small book that is BIG in ideas.
This book is crammed with affirmations related to the fears and horrorsevery artist ends up going through at some point. Whereas I am not too keenin affirmations, I found Mr Maisel's words extremely conforting andintelligent. Although the affirmations are inspiring, this is a book withpractical advice as well, unlike so many others that adress similarquestions. It also contains a lot of quotations from famous artists whoapparently went through similar ordeals. "Affirmations forartists" adresses many different kinds of disciplines and isdefinitely a great gift for an artistically inclined person. If it evergets translated into Spanish I'm definitely giving it out to my friends. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great stories
Humes book has a lot to offer Lincoln fans: a great many stories and anecdotes that shed a light on the many-facted, unique, and charming personality of our sixteenth president. I sometimes feel that these little story books do a better job of capturing someone's spirit than some of the big, thick biographies. And, at this price (same as a paperback), you can't go wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lincoln said:
Abraham Lincoln showed a talent for sensing the future in the course of economic policy way back in 1863. Lincoln said then: "The money power preys upon the nation in times of peace and conspires against it in times of adversity. It is more despotic than monarchy, more insolent than autocracy, more selfish than bureaucracy."5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
Lincoln is one of our most loved Presidents and with good reason. He is almost always recognised for his morality and honesty. Too often his intellect is overlooked. Reading this work will definitly provide the reader with a good idea of just how bright he was. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Stuff

5-0 out of 5 stars The Prophet Among Us
After the 60s, the movement for a better world faded into the 70s, and dissappeared entirely in the 80s. At least in the USA. God and his disciples were still alive and well in Jamaica. Instead of fishermen, they were musicians. When you listen deeply, you'll hear the message clearly. Bob Marley carried the truth for our times. That torch still burns in his music and the writing that came afterward. Read 56 Thoughts. It will touch you, move you, and enlighten you. 56 Thoughts is a book you will never put down. It will go with you every where because it is pure soul from a philosopher who knew what he was talking about. ... Read more

This is one of my favorite books. It's packed with tons of great quotations by a diverse mix of people.I would highly reccommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointing
For some reason, the Forbes quotes seem pithier when I read them in the magazine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Expensive binding, 14173 pieces of wisdom.
"A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end."I bought this book because it was on a discount huge sale and the binding looks so great on my shelf.Once I got it home I find that I frequently find wise quotations on lots of subjects. The topics are arranged alphabetically from Ability to Zeal.I find that I sometimes pick it up and just read a few quotations, and invariably find them interesting and inspiring, or sometimes funny, but never dull.If you ever need a quick source for a quote on almost any topic, say "books" for example, just look in the book. Not just for business, but for lots of your life. ... this book is a godsend for those who need a little help *me* with their spelling... and works wonders for scrabble* words. worth the price.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Good Cat Box Liner
This book consists of 377 pages of definitions and pronunciations. There are roughly 30-40 words per page, or something on the order of 11,000-15,000 words.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not very necesary.
My first criticism of this book is that the definitions are often very incomplete, giving only the definition of a particular word that the author feels may be misunderstood. While that often might fulfill the prupose of the book, I think it would be better to consult a standard dictionary and determine which definition fiils the current need.
