5-0 out of 5 stars Life is to be lived. ~Katharine Hepburn
"As a writer, I like to use quotations to illustrate themes or principles, such as the value of self-confidence or the importance of hard work. Unfortunately, in traditional compilations, finding just the right phrase to illustrate such themes can be very difficult." ~Leslie Ann Gibson5-0 out of 5 stars An uplifting joy to simply page through
Compiled and arranged by Leslie Ann Gibson, The Woman's Book Of Positive Quotations is a collection of 7,341 spiritual, inspirational, upbeat and meaningful quotes by a wide variety of respected women, ranging from Teresa of Avila, to Virginia Woolf, Doris Day, Margaret Thatcher, Susan B. Anthony, and many more. Organized under 62 general subjects and 703 subconcepts, The Woman's Book Of Positive Quotations is indexed by author for easy reference. An uplifting joy to simply page through at random, and a veritable treasure trove of imminently practical advice ("The attributes of a great lady may still be found in the rule of the four S's: Sincerity, Simplicity, Sympathy, and Serenity.") The Woman's Book Of Positive Quotations" is whole heartedly recommended for self-help, self-improvement reading lists, as well as Women's Studies supplemental reference collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars A pleasant read
A perfect little book to read cover to cover and then keep handy to pick up again.I thought it would be one to sit and read a page at a time slowly, for entertainment. It is so intriguing though that I found myself wanting to read the next and the next page until I was to the end. It's not a long philosophical book, rather a fun little book of quotes that induces thought/interest/smiles/curiosity.It was so interesting to contemplate the words famous and not so famous people used in their last moments, the irony, the uniqueness, the unlikely.A wonderful addition to any library and a sure to please gift.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hmmmmmm - Makes you think and live differently.....
When I first held this tiny book in my hand I thought, "Yeah, so?" and then I started to read.Author Ray Robinson has collected these "last words" and contents he can't be absolutely sure these were exactly the last words AND the words - all of them - have a lesson within them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet
I didn't give a flip about this movie until my son introduced it to me.As a former ethics teacher at a small college, the film struck me as pure genius for its abiltiy to capture the moral milieu of the high school experience, likely as it should be without guns and gangs. My daughters really liked the movie too so I decided to buy this book for them.Taken for what it is, it is a lot of fun and worth the sweet moula you have to spend. We laughed and had a good time going through it together.I recommend it as a stocking stuffer for your teens.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wasteful, unnecessary.
As if obnoxious teenagers need more incentive to quote an inane and rather dull movie. The quotebook is not worth the money, simply put. There's nothing within that one cannot find by simply renting the movie or even looking it up on the Incredible Edible Internet (hint: head towards www.imdb.com). Before you buy this, stop for a moment and think to yourself: is this something I really need? Of course sometimes you just WANT, but if you already own the movie, or you have access to a library or computer, there's really no point in you wasting your hard-earned money on something so... Well. Pointless.
3-0 out of 5 stars A little redundant but great to have laying around
The book is redundant in that it is a book of quotes from, yes, the movie with the same name. And probably most people who are interested in the book will own the movie. Or will have seen it so many times that they can already quote it. I like the book, though. It's funny, everyone gets a kick out of it, and you just can't get enough of Napolean. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift for new moms
I like this journal because you don't feel obligated to fill in a whole page at a time. Each page has 3 sections, and so even two or three sentences will do.I'm much more likely to to take 5 minutes to jot a few things down in this journal.I will be purchasing this for a soon-to-be-mom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Need a Daddy Journal also
This is great. We need one that says the daddy journal or the daddy and mommy journal.Daddy probably would appreciate a similiar journal.Who says only mommy will journal?

5-0 out of 5 stars Einstein's mind on many matters...
I have long loved quotes and especially quotes from Einstein, becaues like many great men, he did not think solely in one area on science. He thought greatly about many things. that doesn't mean that he was a perfect man. Far from it. He had major problems with personal relationships, was lacking in parenting skills, was very often not a great husband. Yet he tried to his utmost to use his immense intelligence to the good of mankind. I think he found it easier to deal with humans on a group basis, rather than an individual one. That does not mean that he did not leave an immense area of thought from which we can learn and put into use in our own lives.
5-0 out of 5 stars On the whole excellent
I was overjoyed when the first edition came out. Here in one small volume were many of Einstein's most famous lines.I was even happier when new expanded editions came out.I have used the book almost as an index to my collection of books about Einstein (and I have a dozen of them). Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good sales book!
This book won't teach you to sell, but will inspire those who sell for a living. About half the book is really quotes about selling--one liners that get you thinking. Examples are: "Everyone lives by selling something." Robert Louis Stevenson, "Pack your today's with effort--extra effort." Thomas Watson, and "No one can remember more than three points." Philip Crosby.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
This is a great book!I found it my school library and I go in on break just to read through a few pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars "A word is not the same with one writer as with another...
...One tears it from his guts. The other pulls it out of his overcoat pocket." (Charles Peguy, p 479) What a wonderful reference! I have found this book useful for speeches, papers, special occasions, toasts, etc. Organized topically, this book is amazingly easy to use and is filled with great quotes from a wide variety of sources (the Bible, various ethnic proverbs, presidents and other political figures, a range of artists and writers and various entertainers). A great book for anyone who ever speaks or writes in any capacity.

5-0 out of 5 stars A personal library reference cornerstone
"A word is not the same with one writer as with another. One tears it from his guts. The other pulls it out of his overcoat pocket....Charles Peguy"(pg 479)....................... There are quote books and there are quote books. THIS is quote book you'll mark on every page and return to again and again. It's a feast of ideas that will become one of your favorite reference books. Forget Bartlett's. Here's a reference book you can actually use and enjoy reading at the same time. No wonder its on its third edition. I'm sorry I didn't discover it sooner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A man its hard not to like
My father , of blessed memory had a great affection for Will Rogers. He always used to quote the famous ," I never met a man I didn't like". I think it was Rogers plain commonsense humor, acertain honesty and telling the truth as he saw it, which impressed my father. And perhaps also the Rogers ability to deflate great pretensions and poke quiet fun at those in power. He tells us that if companies gave us much money to developing their products as to advertising them then they wouldn't have to advertise them. He points out one very large group of unemployed people is the ' advice- givers'. He wryly remarks about the difference between agriculture in the old days when they paid you to grow things, and agriculture now when they pay you not to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely a must
This books provides the best collection of cliches ever.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you're a writer or do speeches or presentations PERFECT
Love the opening when it says not to beat around the bush or hedge the bet, this is a must-read for every Tom, Dick and Harry under the Sun-- by PEOPLE magazine.Origins of almost every phrase you've ever heard. It's the cat's meow. I'm a writer of books and articles and it is one of half dozen books I keep on the desk, not the shelves-- Great when you want to ROCK THE BOAT or are afraid to RISK LIFE AND LIMB -- fun for using when coming up with a title for an article or when you've got writer's block. Even if you're rolling in the money you need to roll with the punches and get the show on the road....gives the origin, derivation and a sentence as to how the phrase is used . Compact little book 370 pages packed with hundred-- maybe thousands of phrases...don't miss it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
This was not at all what I expected. The format is a bit confusing at first, and the the fact that not one line listed under Mel Brooks was ever spoke by him in a movie just set me off. He wrote the lines, but that's not the point.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Fun
For many of us, the quoting of movies is second nature. We do it all the time, often without realizing it. And often times we know of movie quotes that are familiar even if we've never seen the movie. The book brings all of this to bloom in a wonderful book asking you to recognize quotes both general and specific to an actor, theme or movie. As the book progresses the quizzes become more difficult, and provide a real challenge to even a movie geek. Just the kind of book to have fun with some friends over a few beers. No lofty ambitions here, just a hope to make you think, and be entertained.

5-0 out of 5 stars An extremely entertaining and engaging book of film trivia.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable reading for non-native and native English speakers
SO far, so good! My students enjoy these "proverbs" and lively discussion ensues. Some of the example scenarios using the expressions aren't that great - sometimes a bit elevated for intermediate ESL sudents. So just make up your own...

This book is really cool. I am very pleased indeed to recommend it for those studying proverbs. The author of this book, Mr. Harry Collis, is so smart. He presented a very good number of common English proverbs in a genius way of learning. It is to learn and have fun in the same time. He really wants his readers to sit down, relax, read, learn, and laugh!!!Read more

Dear Father Tim,
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection of Quotes
I've never read the first word of any of Jan Karon's books (which says nothing of her abilities.) I just happened to pick up this book at the "new book" section of the local library, took it home and was enthralled with the collection of quotes from various authors. And that's all the book is--quotes. But, I was so impressed with the book that I bought a copy for myself to keep and have lent it out to others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Delight
Anyone who is a fan of Father Tim and his Chrisitian insights and appreciates the wisdom of others that he finds in his life, will appreciate Jan Karon's clever presentation in this book.Pretty enough for your table, whether coffe or bedside, this little book is a jewel. One really feels that you have something of Father Tim's own journal, and you share some private and special insight into the thoughts of Mitford's best-loved shepherd of souls. From the first flyleaf where Father Tim writes his name, through the post-it notes and asides written in the margins, this is uplifting reading whenever the need for a great thought arises. Adding to the uniqueness of the volume are several blank pages at the end to which the reader can add personal quotes and insights. All of the the publishing information is placed at the end of the journal also. The volume makes a great gift for special friends that share your life and the love of the Mitford series. ... Editorial Review

I don't know how they skipped Bartlett's attention, but Rosalie Maggio has culled 16,000 quotations from 2,600 women for an indispensable reference work. Elaine Stritch is quoted saying "New York is like a disco, but without the music." Mae West explains that "Too much of a good thing can be wonderful." The remaining 15,998 wax wise, witty, and silly on topics arranged alphabetically from Ability to Zucchini. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Single Greatest Reference for Writing!
As a relationship author I'm always in search of great reference books to find quotations and generate new ideas. This book is without doubt the very best of its kind. After acquiring this one you'll see how trivial most other quotations books are...in fact most are simply gift books. But this one has a ton and a wide variety of wise, colorful, poetic, literary, self-help, and motivational quotations.I can overemphasize how much this book has been a help for me with writing. It's simply the best. All authors should own this!

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK!
How refreshing to open this book and not have to search for a quote by a female! They're ALL by women!Reading through Bartlett's you'd think there were only a few quotable women on the earth. The book is divided by subject and highly readable. I recommend this book to all word lovers. It's a treasure full of previously hidden gems. . .I love this quote by Alice Walker, "Writing poems is my way of celebrating with the world that I have not committed suicide the day before."

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best quotation books in print (or out)
On my office bookshelves I have perhaps 150 books of quotations, which as a writer I refer to constantly. This book of quotations stands heads andshoulders above the rest of them, not because it's women but because it'sfull of superb, thoughtful, wise, witty, useful quotations and because it'sso well-documented (you know who actually said what, on what occasion). There's more genuine scholarship behind this than in a dozen Bartletts'.I'll buy any book Rosalie Maggio puts her name on because she does herhomework and has good taste. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Comparison
This book is very helpful if a reference or translation is needed. Excellent for papers, research, teachers, highly recommended for professors and college students. In comparison with the Lexicon Edition by Alexander Schmidt, Lexicon is easier to reference than this book is but you also need to pay close attention to the two volumes. Still I now own both and would recommend either to anyone who needs a reference to Shakespearian language. For in depth studies of plays or this time period I would recommend a Companion to Shakespeare, the Bedford, and the Oxford are two I currently own because of the difference in information they cover.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bowdlerizing the Bard, or, Where are the Naughty Bits?
This review should be taken as somewhat tentative, as I haven't yet had much experience using the book. That being said, it is clear that this resource shies away from explaining the "naughty bits" that so enlived Shakespeare's double entendres (sorry, groundlings). For example, The rather more vulgar meanings of "count" and "county" are nowhere to be found in this book. Surely we are sophisticated enough to understand these things for what they are in the context of Elizabethan drama. I guess I'll just have to buy another book for that.

3-0 out of 5 stars Byrne is a bit of a rogue
This is as fun as any number of similar books, perhaps even more so, but there are some er... surprising features:5-0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining.
Usually, I only review music, but I just have to put in my two cents on this book.4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable conversation piece type book
Maybe 2,548 quotes but not that many different quotes. The book is a combination of his previous four books. They are placed one after the other and bound together as one book. The problem is that the books have not been culled of repeats. So, many quotes show up in all four books and therefore show up four times in this book.Read more
