The following comments refer to the second (1955) edition.Let us hope the third edition is substantially improved.
5-0 out of 5 stars ********** TEN STARS!
Who said what, when and for what reason? If it's been said, written, shouted, exclaimed or moaned in a breathy sigh, you'll find it recorded here. Three-thousand years worth of quotes from everyone who has ever been anyone: generals, saints, writers, actors, politicians, judges, criminals, heroes, the infamous, the dying, the triumphant, the fictional and the mythical. In this magnficent volume you can search either by an individual name and see all listings for that person, or by subject, and see all recorded passages about whatever topic you wish to investigate. Great for public speakers, students, writers, or lovers of wit, excoriation, or profundity, and absolutely deserving of the word "Encyclopedia" in its title. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great and useful book...
We all know that Shakespeare is another language :).... this incredible dictionary explains every word and gives you other contents in which it was used in different Shakespeare plays...
4-0 out of 5 stars Priceless.
If you are in any way associated with the works of Shakespeare - on stage, in the classroom, for fun, whatever - you have to have these two books. Let's face it, there are just some terms that defy all logic and explanation. The lexicons will solve it.5-0 out of 5 stars Remains an excellent tool
I assign a higher rating to Schmidt's lexicon than to C.T. Onions's *Shakespeare Glossary* (which I have also reviewed) for the reason that, although both compendiums by now do show their age, Schmidt's two volumes (one of course needs N-Z with this one) are all in all in many ways more comprehensive and informative than Onions's single-volume work (even after its updating by Eagleson). 3-0 out of 5 stars Neither Great nor Funny
Probably would best serve entry level speakers. Quick reference for simple needs. The kind of stuff "Inro to Speech" in college was made of. Sparce, very sparce, on the humorous side and lacking citations for many quotations. I'll keep it on the shelf but it won't be the first place I look for quotes or quips. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The prices
for these books are so very high. Love the series and Father Tim, and all the people of Mitford. Love the author , J. Karon. But really.. how about a price break, especially for books like this one. Granted it is great for all the quotes, but this book is not worth all the money it is selling for. And perhaps too like a few of my other favorite authors, print it in softcover. More affordable to the folks who enjoy this series and books by J. Karon. way too over priced.

1-0 out of 5 stars Let the Buyer Beware
Having read and enjoyed all of the Mitford Books, I ordered this one, together with Patches of Godlight.Imagine my surprise when i discovered that instead of being printed in a readable form, both of these books contain mostly "handwritten" writing. They are printed in a barely legible script longhand, complete with misspellings. This may be a cuteand clever way to present what are called Father Tim's favorite quotations, but, for me, they were hard to read and a big disappointment.I wish they had been printed rather than presented in this manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Continual Feast

Editorial Review

Did you know that the stock market had reached a "permanently high plateau" in October 1929? You would have thought so, had you listened to the experts back then. Christopher Cerf and Victor Navasky of the "Institute of Expertology" have made it their mission to compare the actual statements of professional prognosticators with the events following their predictions. Knowing better than to comment directly, they let the reader decide about the (ahem) reliability of the experts.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I have two copies it's so good!!!
Hello,
4-0 out of 5 stars Highly enjoyable
This is a fun book of humorous quotations many about scientific predictions that were WAY off the mark.My favorites concern computers, and I've received some of them over the internet.Since I'm concerned about Urban Legends, this book was very helpful in discerning the veracity of these statements-though the authors are careful to point out quotes that could be Urban Legends or ones that have become part of the culture, whether historically accurate or not. Some good examples are:
1-0 out of 5 stars Misinformation, Misquotations, and Bad Sources
When a book claims to be "definitive" AND "authoritative" one might expect some level of accuracy and even a broadcast-quality fact checking. These authors use second and third party sources when inaccurately quoting reputable figures, even when primary sources are easily available. In three instances I researched, they claimed to "quote" from a book that has NO SUCH QUOTE! I own the source book and found it nowhere between the covers. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mark Twain's Take on Bible Stories
In this book, Mark Twain aims his satire at favorite stories from the Old Testament. He worked on these essays for most of his life, but was afraid their irreverent nature would damage his career; therefore, he just kept re-writing and re-editing them. Most of them were not published until after his death, and for some, this is their introduction.
4-0 out of 5 stars A heavenly work of devilish mischief
"The Bible According to Mark Twain" is one of those serendipitous finds that is as delightful as is it unexpected. Twain shows himself to be a serious thinker about biblical issues, especially as they pertain to the saintly rogues and roguish saints who populated his world. The works in this volume expand on biblical themes, and are as human as they are irreverent. There is no sacrilege or blasphemy intended in Twain's musings -- simply the toil of a man trying to come toterms with the sometimes illogical world inhabited by religious people.
5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable religious satire
Mark Twain promptly proves with this volume that he is, indeed, as the title states, "America's Master Satirist." Having grown up in a fundamentalist Presbyterian community, Twain knew his Bible well; and, like any thinking person, his beliefs and attitudes relating to it changed as he grew older, wiser, and more experienced. Although Twain - due to many factors, such as the death of several children and his wife and his failed investments - grew famously bitter towards the end of his life, his vision remained remarkably clear-headed, though clearly suffued with pessimism - indeed, his zest for the truth and absolute intolerance for mankind's accepted irrational beliefs became even more razor-sharp during this period. Although there are writings in this volume from all phases of Mark Twain's career, the majority of them do come from that latter period - a period in which, indeed, the exploration of these themes was the main facet of his writing. Included are such well-known items as the Diaries of Adam and Eve (as well as several other Old Testament characters), Captain Stormfield's Visit To Heaven (published here in full for the first time ever), and, of course, his masterpiece, Letters From The Earth. In these, and the other, oftentimes more obscure pieces, Twain burlesques and satarizes freely, calling mankind on both his steadfast taking to irrational and illogical beliefs, as well as on his sheer stupidity and gullibility. If one is looking for a satire along the lines of Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn, then this is DEFINITELY not the place to look; however, if you have a fondness, as I do, for the darker, more probing side of Twain, then this is a volume that you must most definitely pick up. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource Book!
I've lost track of the number of weddings that I've conducted or assisted using this book.My wife and I originally used it to find readings for our own wedding 16 years ago.Since then, I've given it to many about-to-be-wedded couples, and they inevitably love it.An uncommonly thoughtful and wide selection of great quotes & readings.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best by far
I'm giving this a low score because the cover claims that the selections are specifically for wedding readings, both traditional and informal. I agree with another reviewer: the few excerpts I liked and could use in a ceremony all appeared in other collections. I'd recommend this only to someone who is reading about love and marriage for a peek into other times and traditions...not to gather readings for a ceremony. The texts were certainly interesting and educational, but most are only appropriate for self-conciously nontraditional events, very brave readers, and highly literate guests. Lots of archaic langauge and rather overwrought expressions of love. I'm planning a small, casual wedding and many of the guests are writers also. I'd be embarassed to have most of these readings presented, so I'm returning my copy. If you're researching wedding rituals or are looking for quotes for an article oncommitment through the ages, this might be good for you. If you're a busy-wedding-planning bride looking for some readings that will engage but not challenge your guests, I'd recommend looking at other guides.

5-0 out of 5 stars Total Inspiration!
Oh my goodness. What an inspiration!3-0 out of 5 stars Words that shook my pocketbook
What a joke.I could have put together those speeches by going on-line but purchased the book since it had a CD of the speeches. The historical notes are very helpful but not as complete as would be expected. Also, in so far as the CD , it does not say they are excerpts on the cover of my book. Not anywhere!I sat down with my kids on Martin Luther King's birthday to listen to his "I have a dream" speech only to find that the CD contains less than 1 minute, barely 35 or so seconds of Dr. King's voice. What a disappointment it was.I had put so much emphasis on that day, history lesson and all and the final climax was to be an after-dinner family event to listen to Dr. King's unforgettable speech in his own voice. The same holds true about all the other speeches, they are excerpts. You would think that for the cost all the speeches would be complete. The cost cannot be much more, you already have had to have permission to do the excerpt.Like I said, you can listen to all of these on-line, complete. How very sad that the author believes we would rather listen to his voice introducing these great icons of our past rather than the actual historical figure's voice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Step back into history
Richard Greene does an excellent job presenting the historical context of these important 20th century speeches and then provides a blow-by-blow analysis of what makes them great. For those of us who were not born yet or were too young to appreciate Churchill, FDR, John Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Albert Einstein and other great people of the 20th century this book is a wonderful way to go back in time and experience history. The book contains the full text of over 40 speeches and short excerpts from twenty of them on the two accompanying CDs. 1-0 out of 5 stars Some good info, but basically outdated
I'm in the process of planning a wedding in Jamaica and was hoping for some suggestions. The basics are covered in the book but it is from 1995.It suggests going to the library and travel agents for help and brouchures. It would have been nice if it mentioned the internet at all.It is geared toward inexperienced travelers. Overall I wouldn't recommend it only because the information can be found through any wedding site.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time andmoney
If you are looking for the proper way to handle the logistics of a wedding away, this is NOT the book for you.It was really useless!!

Editorial Review

If the subtitle of this delicious collection of Yogi-isms has you scratching your head, it has done its job as stunningly as Berra used to do his behind the plate at Yankee Stadium. The Hall of Fame MVP catcher for the pinstriped dynasties of the late 1940s through the '50s and into the '60s, Berra was about as quick with his witticisms as he was with his bat and glove. But if his observations hit the heart of the plate, his grammar tended to pop out of left field, hence the creation of a unique mode of malapropism dubbed the Yogi-ism.To truly understand the title, you need to know that not every mot ascribed to Yogi actually emanated from his mouth--they only sounded like they should have. Thus, he really Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book that is is short, concise and not long :)
This is a must have for Yogi Berra fans or just anybody who appreciates baseball in an older, more pure era. This book contains not only his most famous quotes, but many from his personal life at home as well. The book is short (30 minute read). It is definately well worth reading or at least scanning through.

4-0 out of 5 stars Short but funny with some ponderables
This small book contains many of Yogi Berra's humorous, and sometimes thought-provoking, statements.I added over 30 to my quotes collection. He explains how many originated and that he did not say some of the sayings attributed to him (p. 9: I really didn't say everything I said).Quite a few of them have been quoted so often as to have become part of our culture:
2-0 out of 5 stars Enjoy the read, but don't take this book as historical fact
Yogi really DIDN'T say everything that's attributed to him. A whole cottage industry for sports writers has sprung up inventing way too clever stuff and putting it in Yogi's mouth.Read more

I have read all of Castaneda's books.I was introduced to them by my husband, a real life Warrior. When I first opened the book, I thought:This is jus a cut and paste work of someone who inherited the rights to his royalties.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of several paths of widsom
This is a collection of wisdom gathered from North American natives. It is just as profound as the more well-known eastern paths (Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, etc.). Central is the image of the Warrior: one that sees, not just looks, one whose intentions and goals are clear. A bit like Japanese samurai. They look for the stable and constant, they are not interested in the fleeting. A Warrior is similar to a Nietschzean superhuman in that the striving is a goal in itself; whenver a goal is achieved the Warrior does not dwell but moves on. All actions must be firmly rooted in reality.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!!
'The Wheel of Time' is simply beautiful! As a collection of excerpts from Castaneda's previous works, it does well in preserving the power and force of the philosophy and way of living Castaneda presents to us. It is an excellent and appealing introduction to the Way of the Warrior, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique, uplifting, and refreshing read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good little quote book
I have always been a fan of Mark Twain since I first read Huck Finn.
4-0 out of 5 stars Tidy collection
Mr. Mark Twain has done a considerable amount of writing about stuff and such and so it doesn't much surprise a body to see that some publishing people have come out with a book about his "wit and wisdom."I don't see any harm in it, considering that he is long dead and gone and all, and so there is no danger that it might go to his head.

5-0 out of 5 stars words of a genius
The loss of Jim Henson greatly diminished the world. "It's Not Easy Being Green: And Other Things to Consider" gathers together some of Henson's thoughts on a variety of topics. What comes through is an individual who was deeply concerned with making a contribution to the world, and how we can all live a life in harmony with ourselves, with other people, and the world around us. This is a short read, a book for keeping in the bag on the way to work and other times when losing yourself in pleasant thoughts and deeper private reflection is appropriate.

5-0 out of 5 stars the word of god from themouth of a frog...
I've always loved Kermit, because he the first in the line of Shinge to which I belong. We Shinge --- Korean for spiritfrog --- have a special relation to the earth. We are green in an absolutely perfect sense.Apart from my other favorite author, the German poet/philosopher Friedrich Hoelderlin (look for his novel "Hyperion"), no one expresses such a profound understanding of and sense of connection with nature asKermit the Frog.My only objection --- not so much to this book as to Kermit himself --- is that I don't think his hands and feet are as perfect as they could be.

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK!!!
I picked this book up at the local bookstore when I was feeling down in the depths of despair. It was a life-saver.Not only did it brighten my mood with sayings like:"We are sometimes taken into troubled waters not to drown, but to be cleansed" and "To the ant, a few drops of rain is a flood;" it gave me a useful tool that will help me to become a better person.I think this is the greatest book I've ever come across.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book should be Audio!!
It's a great book to pick up and scan through.I think it would be even better if the book was on a disk I could put in my Car CD player. With maybe some meditative music in the background I could just let the words of wisdon sink in on my way home from work.Could someone let me know if that is already a work in process? ...
