1-0 out of 5 stars Boring junior high school level book.
All the chapters constantly drag on and on like a boring novel. The book is somewhat like a director trying to strech a 50 minute movie into a 2 hour epic. There are few terms in bold and tons of useless garbage in between that is just opinions and junk you don't need to know. This book is more like the type of book you will find in junior high school levels.Like a mother talking to a child type of writing quality. There are many other outstanding books on the market.Don't waste your time purchasing this book.Anyway, this is a school textbook, not a reference book that you would keep at your workstation or library. Why would you buy a textbook and not a "computer" type of book. How can this be a second edition? Many typos have not been edited.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Computer Book I've Read
The Second Edition (2002) of Web 101 is a superb book. I respectfully disagree with the Amazon.com review's opinion that the book is "not really" a good value. It is expensive, but worth it. It is very well written, with lots of facts and examples to back up the author's points. The layout of the book may be the best I've ever had the pleasure to see.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I'd prefer a 3 1/2 for this book
As a graduate student in Library and Information Studies, I was assigned this book in one of my courses. As textbooks in this field go, Case's book is more readable than most.As mentioned by an earlier reviewer, it is an in-depth literature review, and since it is for one of the required courses which had to be taken early on, it will be a useful reference in future classes. In fact, it is a book that I will retain simply as a source of information on possible research material.
4-0 out of 5 stars I have to disagree with a Reader from England...
I'm currently enrolled in a doctoral program in Information Science and, while this book isn't the sum total of all LIS knowledge, I've found it invaluable as a reference on Information Seeking.Few other places will you find this level of literature review laid out in such a compact way.I use it nearly every day in my studies and I'm grateful that Don Case wrote it.It's a roadmap and guidebook for my studies.2-0 out of 5 stars The case of a failed survey mission....
I was excited by the possibility of a suitable overview of information seeking, I obtained the book a.s.a.p.I was willing to forgive the high price in favour of a good text.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction and review
The publication of this book has been highly anticipated by many in the emerging field of public health informatics and it does not disappoint. Although seemingly targeted at those new or recently introduced to the discipline, or those "crossing over" from other areas within the broader informatics arena, content is very well-suited for all comers, with sufficient detail to satisfy even those familiar with the many issues detailed in the richly detailed case example chapters.Read more

There's been a marked shift in the philosophy of developing successful Web sites. The technologies (HTML, JavaScript, JavaServer Pages) no longer occupy center stage. Rather, functional objectives and the communities that grow up around them seem to be the main ingredient in Web site success. In her carefully reasoned and well-written Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful -- shame it's out of print
I borrowed this from my local library and found it so helpful that I hunted down a used copy. It's not a technical reference, but it provides a great overview of the elements of online community, with authentic examples from existing communities (some of which, sadly, are now gone, but this was written before the bubble burst). Highly recommended if you are responsible for developing and supporting an online community, or if you are just interested in how thinking in online communities has been developing in the early days.

I thought this was an excellent book.Even though technologies change the concepts presented in this book are timeless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
It is wonderful to find a book that helps you guide your child - ANY child, gifted or not - to exceptional reading material. I loved the books it recommended for my 4 yr old - we picked up several of them at the library and some here on Amazon. The book also pointed out what the exceptional qualities for each book were, so that you could have a better discussion about the book with your child. It was worth the money, since it gives recommendations for ALL ages of child and I will reference it as he grows older. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Conservator's Review
As a guide book written specifically for lay persons, An Ounce of Preservation has an educational mandate. As such, it is compelled to offer well-researched and accurate information in all details. At the same time, it attempts to simplify a highly complex field to fit the format of a shortbooklet that can be understood by a reader who has never concerned himselfwith document preservation before. The main dilemma of this book becomesapparent at the point where these two goals meet: simplification versusaccuracy - can both coexist? Some critical observations must be made thatdemonstrate how the author has compromised the accuracy of his text byfalling into some of the traps of over-simplification.5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the beginning family historian!
With no background in caring for old photos and papers, I was in a quandry over what to do with the box full of items left to me by my deceased uncle. I didn't have the money for a professional to refresh and repair thephotos, many of which suffered from long years of neglect. So I went onlinein search of a publication that would tell me where to start. An Ounce ofPreservation provided me, a true archival dummie, with the groundwork Ineeded to begin the restoration project. As I sent off for information fromcompanies listed in the appendix of the book, I learned more and more, untiI now feel like a blooming expert! I have a great scrapbook of my uncle'sphotos that I can pass on to my grandchildren, and it's a scrapbook thattakes care of the items instead of aiding in their destruction. Without allthe easy-to-follow techniques and many, many leads for more informationprovided in the book, I doubt if I would have ever had the courage totackle the job myself. And since I didn't have the money for professionalhelp, all those precious items of family history would still bedeteriorating away in my closet. I contacted the publisher (to find out howto contact the author) only to learn that a greatly expanded second editionof this book is in the works. I highly recommend this book to anyone whowants to learn the basics -- it was all news to me!

2-0 out of 5 stars An Ounce of Information
"An Ounce of Preservation" is more aptly described as a pamphlet which delivers only the most BASIC information that most people nowadays regard as common knowledge. The reader looking for practical help, such aswhat solution to use to clean a smudged photo from the twenties, will findvery little to go by (no more than a three-sentence paragraph for thecleaning of old photos). This thin book might have been more successful ifthe author had limited his scope and treated his subject in more detail. As it is, it's a lot to pay for text that can be read in less than an hour. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Commendable but DULL big time
Rubin offers a competent and well prepared text that covers the field thoroughly. The book, however, is written in a manner that takes all of the interest, colour, and excitement out of librarianship. It is dull and it is boring big time, and it tends to put off those interested in becoming librarians.I know because I'm using it now in a course that I'm teaching. There is really no reason for this for producing such a flat, unappealing volume. I strongly urge Rubin to take on a co-author who would be able to put some life and human interest in this otherwise commendable work.He owes it to his profession.

5-0 out of 5 stars Technical explanations for the truly web-savvy
The author is the unsurpassed guru of InterNet searching, and is explicitly relied upon by other authors engaging in the same work. His website is the mother lode of additional information, which is very helpful. If you have one book on your shelf regarding InterNet resources, this should be it.That said, Mr. Sherman relies heavily upon explanations of the breadth and depth of various resources; these explanations are designed to pique the reader's interest in further self-directed exploration, but may be more than the average searcher might need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth It
Actually bought the book for my boyfriend who is currently working on my business website - he found the book very interesting and helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent instruction for librarians . . .
I retired five years ago after thirty years in a very large public library system, and recently found it necessary to return to the trenches for awhile, in a rather smaller system. In that half-decade, of course, the Internet changed drastically and, even though I'm constantly online and intimately familiar with the major search engines (and many of the minor ones), there was a large number of new reference information sources with which I was not at all familiar. So I went looking for professional tools to remedy my ignorance. This is the first book I've seen in the publisher's "CyberAge" series, and medthodologically, it's quite good. As others have noted, the static nature of print-on-paper means rapidly outdated material, but Sherman and Price show you how to attack the problem, so, even though I came across several (unfortunately) extinct databases, I was able to locate several new ones, too. This is a terrific instructional work for reference librarians, and the accompanying web site is near the top of my bookmarks at work. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Its okay
I had to use this book for a graduate LIS degree and it was okay. There are lots of examples but few explanations so you have to discern for yourself what the author is trying to convey. If you are not familar with cataloging this is not helpful since it does not explain very well.I am looking for a book that shows examples and explains the AACR2 rules in English for people who are not familar with the library terms. This book would have been excellent if there was more detailed explanations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cataloging made understandable!
cataloging is a mind-boggling experience for most people. this book actually helps unravel the mystery of it all! i highly recomend it to anyone trying to decipher the language of cataloging.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Metadata
I keep this book close to me at work and usually stick it in my laptop case when I leave for home. It is my bible for metadata. The first time I read it, I carefully underlined passages with a fine light pencil. Now I've tossed book decorum to the winds and use highligher pens! To mention just one general topic, Elaine Svenonius grapples with all of the key issues that trained librarians face when cataloguing digital materials. She also covers controlled vocabularies from several perspectives, and understands the challenges/difficulties of applying standard "book" classifications to rich media collections. That it took me a long time to get through this book has nothing to do with her style -- Elaine Svenonius writes clearly, often beautifully -- but rather with the amount of information and the mind-expanding concepts, which I still mull over as I wrestle at work with asset management.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heavy going, but worth the effort
I think that a lot of people who work in information technology tend to think that the problems that we have with things like web-based search and retrieval are unique to Internet search engines and catalogue databases. I know that I've been working in the field while lacking an adequate sense of the historical basisof information organization.Read more
