5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all serious scholars of leadership
I have found the "Handbook" to be most useful.I disagree with my Swedish friend above about the book.In fact below is a snippet from THE journal of leadership about the book.According Schriesheim, Scandura,Gardiner and Lankau (1993) the Handbook is "the outstanding foundationsource for information on leadership theory and research" (p. 104). Schriesheim et al. state further that the handbook is "the sourcewhich scholars should consult first in attempting to understand any of thesubsidiary topics...subsumed under the general rubric of 'leadership theoryand research'" (p. 108).4-0 out of 5 stars A classic, comprehensive work
Bass presents a thorough, but brief synopsis of the findings in leadership research. His chapter on stress and leadership ignores the positive effects stress has on leader behavior and its relationship to subordinates.

1-0 out of 5 stars Social science back 60 years?
This text displays a plethora of simplistic, presumptuous and shallow typologies purporting to explain what is a leader and why it has to be so. Without any concern for contemporary social studies the author tells usabout what inborn qualities signifies a female leader, why there are fewerblack leaders than white ones ("scientifically proven" lowcognitive ability according to the author, pp. 740-741), and the litanygoes on. It is baffling that this stuff is still available in the bookmarket as anything else than obscure reminiscences of American socialscience in a time we rather forget about. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably one of the best books I have ever read
This is arguably one of the best books that I have read.Almost everything relevant to finance and investments is covered in this book, including a good historical discussion of the theories of investment. In addition, Mark Rubinstein has a very clear and simple writing style that transforms complex concepts into words. The proofs are done in a fashion that most readers can understand, and the sections are divided up in easy to break-up sections. This is definitely a must read for any serious student of finance. All of the seminal work in finance is discussed in this text, and this can be used as a guide to asset pricing, corporate finance, investments, and other finance courses. In fact, I would have used this as a supplement to reading journal articles if it were available in the past.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rubinstein has done it agian!
This book is excellent; it gives a new insight in the history of discoveries in financial economics like no other book. The book is nicely organized with a very useful "Index of Ideas".
5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning, Imaginative, Accurate
Mark Rubinstein is a man who likes to think for himself, which is a good thing for the rest of us. Most readers will be familiar with Mark's contributions to financial economics primarily through his co-authorship, with John Cox and Steve Ross, of the binomial options pricing model - no mean feat, that. But his interests and contributions are far more broad. My personal favorite paper of Mark's is his relatively overlooked "The Strong Case for the Generalized Logarithmic Utility Model as the Premier Model of Financial Markets" [GLUM], published in 1977 as the second chapter of Haim Levy and Marshall Sarnatt's "Financial Decision Making under Uncertainty" (Academic Press New York 1977); this is a wonderful model which places restrictions on tastes a la Arrow, Debreau, Hirshleifer, Cass, Stiglitz , Hakansson, Kraus, Grauer and Litzenberger, rather than placing restrictions on beliefs as in the more conventional models commonly understood to represent "Modern Portfolio Theory", i.e., Markowitz, Sharpe, Treynor, Lintner, Mossin, Fama, Jensen, Black, Scholes and Merton. In the 1977 GLUM paper, Rubinstein notes that the latter, MPT-type, models are not necessarily superior to the former type and chalks their popularity up to historical happenstance and ideological path-dependence: "Men were not lacking in evidence, but inherited habits of thought, which often extended beyond science proper to a worldview, [and] caused them to cling stubbornly to superannuated ideas."

5-0 out of 5 stars Daniels' standard work much improved
It's going to be hard to get used to using this very different-looking edition of a standard reference work for music librarians. That said, the new edition is an improvement in every way.Notation especially is much clearer.Errata have been corrected. Format is improved, and there's additional information. In my opinion, it's well worth buying this new edition, despite the price tag.

5-0 out of 5 stars Orchestra Music a Handbook
Orchestral Music a Handbook compiled by David Daniels is an outstanding resource for any serious conductor. While it does omit some important items in the repertoire for chorus and orchestra, it is none the less an extremely valuable tool for basic information to assist with programing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
Great collection of tips and techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for both newbies and veterans
I agree with the general assessment of reviewers that this is a very helpful and well-written guide to classical music. But I disagree with several reviewers' criticisms. To begin with, to those who say this book is only for newcomers to classical music, I would argue that Libbey writes so entertainingly, and with such a good blend of human interest stories and technical information, that this guide would be useful and fun for almost anyone. I think it also has a sensible balance between space given to the music and space given to discussions of recommended recordings. To those who don't like the organization of the book, and say for instance that all the works of each composer should be put together, I would argue that that is subjective, and that some people including myself would prefer to read about each category of music (orchestral, chamber, concertos, etc.), as Libbey has arranged it. To one reviewer who complained about the short length of the final sections on solo keyboard, choral, and opera, the subtitle of the book is "The 350 Essential Works," so Libbey's choices would certainly provide a good core collection, which is the intent of the book. Also, unlike some people, I never have had trouble in finding a given piece of music in here, especially since the index lists composers, their works, and performers too. And although I admit that I have not heard a huge number of different recordings of most pieces of classical music, I have so far found Libbey's recommendations to be judicious and not eccentric. Thus, I'm quite baffled at most of the criticisms that I've seen of this book, and I have spent many enjoyable hours reading it. I own several dozen books about classical music, and this one is in the top ten. However, I do think it's time for a third edition, in light of the many new recordings that have come out since 1999.

5-0 out of 5 stars Succeeds beautifully.
Libbey's guide will get you started without trial and error. Occasionally the specific recording recommended is difficult to find (exact orchestra and composer) but this is the way to build a collection. The background information on composers and works is engaging and provides great context for enjoying the music.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource for Classical Newbies
I would recommend this as a good introduction to Classical Music for those that are not sure what area of the music they would like, be it instrumentation, composer or period, and don't have the time to spend hours listening to it to find out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hard To Read Wealth of Children's Litature Course
If you plan to teach a children's literature course, then this book possesses nearly all of the information, history, and important milestones that you need...if you can get by the stilted language.
1-0 out of 5 stars Reads like telephone book!
This is by far the most boring text book I have ever read. I can't stomach it. It reads like one long boring bibliography. There are so many lists of children's books and their authors that any meaningful information gets lost. The authors of this book overload you with too much information and research that they are obviously very proud of but which puts a strain on your mind. I wanted to learn about the history of children's literature but I just couldn't get past the many, many, many list of children's books that litter the text. I just think that the lists should have been at the end of each chapter for those want to know that stuff. For those who just want the facts, like me, the book is useless. But that's my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool to help us raise our children
The ADHD book of list is a great guide to discovering the facts about ADHD and what can be done to work with a child who has been diagnosed with it and help him or her to be successful in life. It is appropriate for parents, counselors, educators and an community member who comes in contact with children and adults with this disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book is HUGE!
I didn't expect this book to be so huge...in size and also in the amount of info.i just received this book today and have skimmed over most of the info in it. i have already found several pages that i will photocopy and give to my child's teacher. the way that the information is presented is easy to follow, easy to locate, and easy to understand. well worth the money and time spent reading it from cover to cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reference book for the serious collector.
I have owned books by Joel Whitburn for over two decades now.As an avid record collector and someone who is extremely interested in the history of popular music I cannot imagine life without them.Of all of Whitburns books, this is perhaps my very favorite. This book is unique among the Whitburn offerings in that it begins with a seven page "Chronology of Milestones in Popular Music/Recording History 1877-1954."It is a fascinating look at the history of the recording industry beginning with Thomas Edisons invention of the phonograph. You will also learn about the history of the Billboard music charts as well as the beginnings of two of America's most venerable record labels Columbia and Victor.5-0 out of 5 stars If you're interested in pre-Elvis music, this helps a lot
Music charts never tell the whole story as anybody who has followed pop charts of any era will know. They serve as an approximate guide to what music was fashionable at the time.4-0 out of 5 stars A Musical Journey Through The Past
I purchased this book through Mr.Whitburn's Record Research company in 1993-Right away,I was awestruck at the amount of artists & songs that were listed-I was happy to see that the songs that helped to launch the rock era were included, such as "Sh-Boom",& "Shake,Rattle,& Roll"-One reviewer indicated that this book should be updated,as far as listing the years when these artists died-I'm sure that Joel Whitburn would find that to be quite time consuming-Anyway,this book is terrific. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I'm on my third copy
Joel Whitburn's Top 40 books are an absolute necessity to anyone who enjoys popular music, but beware, they're just the tip of the iceberg.I started out with an early 80's copy, which I reduced to confetti.A second copy was eventually given to a friend, and the third copy serves me well to this day.The problem comes when you realize that a lot of the songs you've been searching for can only be found in the Billboard Hot 100 chart book or the Bubbling Under The Hot 100 book.Pretty soon you find yourself with your own music library, which is just what happened to me.This is one of those books that you can spend a day lost in, bouncing from one song to another and completely absorbed in the journey.Good times.

5-0 out of 5 stars And the Girl Groups Too!
What was the first chart hit for the Coasters? What was the last hit by the Byrds? What was the Mystics only hit?How many hits did Shelley Fabares produce-and which star of M*A*S*H* was her second husband? And speaking of Girl Groups, how many chart makers did Arlene Smith and the Chantels have? - (Answers below). This reviewer first became aware of Mr. Whitburn's compiling skills via his wonderful and highly recommended "Top 40 Country" Hits".This volume is the perfect companion.By necessity, it is considerably heftier because it covers a far broader range of music. So much is here: Rock N' Roll, Pop, Easy Listening, Doo-Wop, Motown, the British Invasion, crossover Country hits and yes indeed-Girl Groups.Trivia mavens will delight in the 844 pages, one question will quickly lead to another: Just as in the Country version, Whitburn supplies an alphabetical listing of all versions of Billboard songs, and a list of the Top 100 Singles from 1955 on as measured by weeks on the charts. There is a listing of the top artists in those decades' most charted singles and most Top 10 singles.Plus so much more! The answers from the teasers above are: "Searchin'" (1957); "My Back Pages" (1967); "Hushabye" (1959); and 2 -"Johnny Angel" and "Johnny Loves Me" (1962).Shelley married B.J./ Captain Hunnicut, who is Mike Farrell in real life. Arlene, Sonia, Rene, Jackie and Lois had 4 chart makers from `58-'61 but appeared for many years at oldies/Doo -Wop concerts.Speaking of the preceding groups, this reader learned that the Byrds were American (!) and that "Now That Summer's Here" did not make the charts for Phil Cracolici and the Mystics.(It's bad form to mention a Doo-Wop group without listing the lead singer!).This reviewer interests are obviously from the `50s and `60s, but the `70s, `80s and `90s are well represented too. This readers' copy became quickly well worn and yours will too. A closing warning: If you don't know what a Girl Group is, then you are deep in the Dog House! Shirley, Ronni, Judy, Brenda, and Barbara, want to have a serious talk with you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good chart info, but watered down by rap & hip-hop
This is a good book if you don't have one of his previous editions. If you do, and you despise hip hop as much as I do, don't waste your money, or get an earlier version.

2-0 out of 5 stars Predictable and boring
Why waste your time and money?Based on this book's standards, just buy anything by a British artist or on a British label and you are sure to have a complete three-star CD collection. What source are you left with?Listen to a lot of versions of a given work(for example in public libraries)and decide what kind of approach you like. You might find out that your tastes are not those of elder conservative British gentlemen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly, the very best guide available.
Considered by many as a "bible" for those interested in collecting the best classical music, the Penguin Guide is the most comprehensive, objective guide in this difficult and discriminating world. It avoids the prejudices of other guides and presents clear arguments to support its claims to the ranking of the various recordings according to the merits of musical interpretation, quality of playing and recording. The simple evaluation system, based on one to three stars, readily informs the reader about the characteristics of each recording. On the other hand, the rosette award almost invariably calls the reader's attention to exceptional recordings which provide great satisfaction in many ways to the listener.
4-0 out of 5 stars Still the best at what it does but might be slipping
Is the Penguin Guide becoming an anachronism that relies too heavily on its timeworn recommendations and lets them get in the way of better new recordings? This is the first question I asked when I purchased the newest guide (apparently written in 2005 and dated 2005-06) and couldn't find any of the newer CDs I had purchased that surely deserve some commendation herein (the new Shostakovich symphony set led by Kitaenko on the Capriccio label being the most obvious.)

5-0 out of 5 stars You Gotta Get This Book
Third time is the charm for Freeman. This book is much more than just a revised and updated version.Judy has put all the book suggestions and "germs" like always, but she has included enough other librarian and book info to keep you going through many school years to come. How to share great books, extension activities, program management ideas, favorites over the years, and Judy's insights about books are too numerous to mention. As a school librarian for more than 500 PreK-6th grade students I know I'll have plenty of ideas for great book sharing and fun all year.I see 8 classes of pre-reading, 3-5 year olds each week and I know Judy's insight will help me build a strong literacy foundation with them.I bought the hardback because the book is so big and I didn't want to worry about the binding giving into that weight. You need this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is the real deal for record collectors!!!!
The best book out there for Beatle record collectors...hands down!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Something for every Beatle fan
I had heard that Bruce Spizer's books were full of images of record labels, so I wasn't sure I'd be interested in them. A friend of mine who is a serious collector told me this book was the one to start with. As it turns out, it combines lots of new information with a really great trip down memory lane. While I don't find every version of every label particularly interesting, there's a lot in this book that's REALLY great! The opening section on Beatlemania in America is an excellent overview of the subject. The chapters on each of the 45s include great images of picture sleeves and vintage Billboard ads; and Spizer describes in fascinating detail how the songs were written and recorded. It's hard to believe, but Capitol originally intended for "Act Naturally" to be the A side over "Yesterday." This was because in the early days of Beatlemania, Ringo was the most popular Beatle. (I preferred Paul.) This is just one of the great factoids that Spizer writes about and then illustrates - this one with images of Ringo on covers of a comic book and MAD magazine. The last section details how Capitol Records came to be and how the company creatively used merchandising and promotion to sell records (hard to believe the Beatles needed help!) - again, lots of pictures, e.g., actual press kits, etc. Although I skipped over some of the technical information, it's a great reference book besides being a fun read. The information is new, the stories are fascinating and the pictures really help tell the story. This book was completely worth the price - now I'm saving to buy his other ones!

1-0 out of 5 stars who is this book for?
These reviews are very misleading... they led me to purchase this book! Once I got a copy I was beyond disappointed: this book is an extensive collection of record labels. Little more. I mean, who is this for? People who are interested in how 45s got labeled (or often mislabeled) in the 60s? When is says "Beatles story ON capitol records", it means literally. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny
This book is a must-have for teachers and librarians, but most importantly, for parents who want a culturally literate child. As a teacher (grades 4th - 12th), I recommend the Core Knowledge Series by the same author as the framework for home schooling. Please don't wait, parents!Get this book and start collecting these resources! You can't rely on any school to teach your child all they should know.If you are reading this, you are a conscientious parent.Your child's school may well be focused on teaching basic life skills such as manners and self esteem, because not all parents are conscientious. After all, parents are ultimately responsible for their child's education.Even if you aren't home schooling, get this to help you supplement your child's education.Get the "What your K/1st/2nd...6th grader Needs to Know" books, too.You will be amazed at how much these books enrich your child's education, and ultimately their life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book
This book is very nice to have if you homeschool. It is very easy to use and a great resource. It is broken into curriculum areas including Visual Arts, which has really helped since I did not know much about the subject.

3-0 out of 5 stars Books to Build On
This is a useful book but one I don't believe you need to spend your money on as it is available at the library for free - and it's not a book you need to refer to daily or even weekly.Check it from the library, make yourself a list of what books it lists that you need from that, and return it. ...
