3-0 out of 5 stars a quick yet comprehensive read
I actually purchased the book for the person I share an office with.He is currently working on his dissertation and kind of at a stand still on page 5.After reading the book, within two weeks he was on page 50 and continues to progress ahead. He really liked the book and has recommended it to several other people. The book helped him focus less on making sure everything he was writing was perfect and more on trying to get a first draft done. While the book assisted him with this, it will probably not be helpful once the draft is done.

4-0 out of 5 stars To the Point, Easy Language
The author provided a guide to assist the social scientist in writing clear, concise articles, books, etc.Tips for revising/editing were helpful, as were the suggestions for overcoming procrastination, and finding critical colleagues to assist in the process. The tips, I think, were helpful; however, as the author points out, many scientific journals are not interested in articles that are clear and concise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable
Writing for Social Scientists is written primarily for individuals who wants to hone their writing skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars A literature review like no other
The cover photo and the list of magazines that the author has been involved with should provide a good indication of what to expect in this fascinating book, in other words, not beautiful scantily clad female fashion models photographed by skillful photographers as appeared in Playboy and Penthouse (which are notably absent from this compilation), but the world of specialist - read unsophistated, tacky and bizarre - softcore porn as it was in the 1970s. Well, some photos are typical of Playboy and Penthouse, but the majority are ones they would not have considered.Of the 1,000 + illustrations most are of covers but there are plenty of internal ones also, including cartoons and graphics. Personally I find only a minority of them appealing or a turn-on but as an historical survey this is pretty good and several countries are represented. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!! This book delivers with a BANG!
I came across this book quite by accident and what attracted me besides the GREAT title was.....the GREAT title...! I mean, who doesn't want to learn ways on how to make more money---even Donald Trump is always on the hunt. I picked up the book and could not stop reading it. It had me at 'hello' and I learned exactly what I needed to do to become very successful as a writer.
3-0 out of 5 stars The Wealthy Writer
I didn't think this book was that great.I am interested in starting an on-line writing business and this is the only book I've bought and read so far --based on these glowing reviews. It did cover many common-sense aspects of writing and working for yourself --but I was disappointed in what it didn't cover: the legal requirements for running your own business and taxes. There was a single line on being a Sole Proprieter. No mention of taxes. No information on websites beyond stating that it would require too much information to cover here and would justify a book in itself. The book focused almost entirely on the author's preferred niche market, writing for companies.Overall I found this book disappointing and dated. If this is the cream of the crop, I shudder to think what the other writing-for-money books are like. This is definitely not a reference book that you will return to again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A practical handbook
The Wealthy Writer is an excellent resource for both established freelance writers and those just entering the field. Its strengths are its practical nature. While many such books are written from an academic standpoint, The Wealthy Writer is entirely practical and simple to read. Its other strength is that it covers many different areas of freelance writing and shows readers how they can specialise in different areas. This is valuable for those wanting to know what focus they can take, while it also offers established writers new avenues. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Completng your Doctoral dissertation or Master's thesis on 2 semesters or less
This book is excellent, it is motiviative, sensible, and plain common sense. Written in a manner to put everything in perspective.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview of the Dissertation/Thesis Process
In this book, Dr. Evelyn Hunt Ogden outlines a practical, yet optimistic, approach for finishing a Doctoral dissertation in two semesters or less. She is also quick to point out that the book is essentially suited to a Master's thesis. I will point out that in programs that have de-emphasized thesis writing, instead relying on a written 'Graduate Research Project' (GRP, which also goes by other names), generally of smaller scope than a thesis, this is also very applicable. 4-0 out of 5 stars Optimistic, but then, you need some optimism in this process
I waited a mere 6 months for my copy of this book and I had given up hopewhen a week ago the email came saying it was available. Was it worth thewait?YES!I have read almost every one of these types of books I couldget my hands on (probably to procrastinate more than in search ofinspiration!) and I can safely say that this book along with DavidSternberg's How to Complete and Survive a Doctoral Dissertation haveoffered the best advice.Read more

Editorial Review

Though bits and pieces are somewhat outdated ("backspace 10 characters for right-hand margin," a chapter on getting published recommends), this is a fine and quite British introduction to the art of writing and illustrating children's books. Nine writers, illustrators, editors, librarians, and educators present a chapter or two each on such subjects as storytelling, classic children's fiction, contemporary themes in children's literature, illustration, and production. The format doesn't allow much of a chance for any one aspect of the business of children's books to be explored deeply, but the authors' strong affinity for children and their literature will help any potential children's-book creator adopt the right frame of mind for the work. Authors of children's books, says Gabrielle Maunder, must not underestimate the intelligence of their readers. And illustrators, says Catherine Storr, should do more than simply add pictures to the text; "the illustrator all writers long to meet," she says, "is the one who can take the text and, without radically changing it ... enormously enrich it." Most important, agree all the contributors here, is the need for authors and illustrators alike to understand the mind of the child. Getting published and sold is one thing, says illustrator (and writer) Celia Berridge; but true success "is knowing that your book Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book
Good book for those wishing to know more about the field or not knowing where to start. When you get serious, you'll want to read some additional books on working with the publishing world. From what I've understood, very few agents will touch children's books. So, you'll likely be going it alone up until you really get established, if you do.That means you will be working directly with the publisher/editor yourself. As a result, you will need more information under your belt about the publishing world than what this book contains, but this is an excellent source to learn about everything else.It does include some starter info about the publishing end of things.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful information
I found this book to be very useful as a source for writing better children's books. It includes specific style and writing techniques with examples to teach us to make a more powerful manuscript.I wish there were more books like this with even more ideas!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Start for Illustrators
Treld Pelkey Bicknell's 'How to Write and Illustrate Children's Books' is really more for illustrators of children's books then the writer's aspect of the book. It's a good source for that particular purpose. If you want a more indepth instruction on the children's book writing process I suggest Barbara Seuling's 'How to Write a Children's Book and Get It Published.' Bicknell's book is valuable for it's comprehensive topics and illustrations. The first part include topics of constructing a story from beginning to end (planning and plotting, story structure, dialogue). There's a section on getting to know your reader and choosing the right words. Plus other informative information like looking into the world of children and the influence of new writing. The second part is devoted to illustration and discusses getting to know your audience, the types of picture books (board, pop-ups, zig-zag, flap, half-flap, holes, pictorial consequences, long text, minimal text, wordless, picture strips). It combines pictures with interpeting a text and using your imagination. Building the porfolio follows in the creation process. The last part is devoted to getting published. Starting from making the book, preparing the roughs, the right style for the right job. The author tops it off with factual writing and researching, Fad & Novelty books and finding the right publisher. To find what's in the market I also suggest the 'Children's Book Writer and Illustrator's Market Book' as a directory in that field to find the right genre of which publisher to contact. This book is a handy source like the other two I mentioned. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars pleased typography student
I am a second year Communication Design student at a prestigious (pretentious) art school in New York City. This year marks my first foray into typography, and this book was the first recommendation on my to-buy list.
5-0 out of 5 stars New edition and companion website are great for typography classes.
This new edition (5) is a great textbook for the beginning typography class; thorough, well-written and illustrated, highlighting the most important things a beginning designer must know. It is very engaging and easy to read. Students will benefit greatly not only from using the book in class, but having it in their design library for the future. Professors will find it a great resource, along with it's wonderful companion website, which contains a vast resource of lecture material, visual samples, links and project assignments with examples of student work.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Fifth Edition is Even Better
This is the new fifth edition of this classic book on typography that first began in 1971. Since then it has become a standard of the industry. It's real strength is how it describes fonts from the standpoint of conveying feeling, readability, aspects of fonts that you wouldn't normally think about.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Perfect Pages": a clear and accessible guide for book creation
I enjoyed Aaron Shepard's "Perfect Pages", a clear and accessible guide for book creation using Microsoft Word instead of expensive publishing software. Shepard shows that Word actually has some advantages for publishers, tells how to make Word do what's needed, while avoiding some of Word's hazards. Thus the book delivers worthwhile Word tips for novices and experts alike---and there are more web resources at the end of the book---but it's more than that, because a book is more than a manuscript: it has to look good and read easily. "Perfect Pages" covers the details (fonts, typography, trim sizes, formatting, covers, generating PDF files, common errors . . .), showing how to make manuscripts into attractive and readable books. The book provides the ideal bridge between a Word software manual and a publishing manual (such as Morris Rosenthal's) that teaches business and strategic decisions. "Perfect Pages" is a gracefully written book that wastes few words, and minces none.
5-0 out of 5 stars Makes self-publishing affordable for everyone
When I decided to self-publish my first book, I was intimidated by how expensive it was going to cost to buy Page Maker and I also didn't want to spend a month learning how to use it properly. Luckily, I found Aaron's ebook on Amazon and it made it possible for me to use Word and create a professional book that was accepted by the bookstores (they have a very high standard for quality print work). Now that I'm working on my second self-published book, I'm happy to see that Aaron's ebook has been updated in a paperback format. Just like the ebook, this book is essential for learning how to use Word to professionally produce your book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide
Like Shepard's Books, Typography, and Microsoft Word, this much-expanded version is a first-rate, user-friendly guide to designing and typesetting your book in Word. Anyone who's planning to self-publish a book will find helpful material here, particularly the sections on optimizing Word's settings to produce reliable PDF files that can be used by both POD (print-on-demand) and traditional printing services. Shepard's design advice is sound and concise; it'll help you avoid all the mistakes novice typesetters are prone to. He's especially good on the differences between the various Word programs--he covers recent versions for both Windows and Mac, and he's one of the very few who knows what EVERY setting on the file-compatibility tab does and doesn't do. He also offers some advance info about what is likely to change when Word 2006 is released. In short, this book is well worth buying--it will save you both time and money whether you're self-publishing a book, doing academic typesetting (where Word's ability to handle footnotes makes it a better choice than some page-layout programs), or just find you've been spending too much time trying to figure out how to tweak Word's settings to get the results you want. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Specialty Use of Photoshop
This book is on how to get your comic book ideas from out of your head onto a disk that you can take to a printer and get him to produce the comic book for you. The advent of powerful personal computers has meant that the hand drawn, hand lettered, hand colored prints from the past no longer are what the printer wants. Instead the book now goes to the printer on a disk.
3-0 out of 5 stars "Quark Xpress and Photoshop Four Comic Books"
This book is more a specialized "how to" manual for specific software than a "definitive guide" for computer owners who want to make comics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just Like Chick-lit
This is a fun guide. Learn about how writing chick-lit is like therapy and dating. And forget about making excuses about not writing, Ms. Mess or Ms. Really-Busy. She's got your number. There's lots of personal experience and advice. It's like sitting down and having a conversation with some good friends.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rubbish
Claims to give you an example of a complete synopsis suitable to send out to an editor and then gives you a blurb for the back of the book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Definitely for Dummies
For the total novice who has very limited experience in writing and publishing, this book will be treasure trove, especially if that novice is planning to write a non-fiction book. For everyone else, this book has lesser value. I found it offered very little for writers of fiction. The information offered was also rather basic; for a person with a moderate amount of writing experience, the book offered little in the way of insightful information. The "for Dummies" part of the title definitely applies in this case.

2-0 out of 5 stars Getting your book published for those who already have
This book was a disappointment. The reviews below pretty much reflect my problems with the book. Another problem I had concerned promotion. The authors assume that every aspiring author already has extensive media contacts. The sample proposal they give is from 2 college professors who have already published 2 books and have been featured on national TV and raidio. Now come on, most people who buy this book have not been on national TV and have no idea where to begin a promotional campaign. That's why they buy this book in the first place! Instead of telling us how to establish media contacts to use in the proposal, the authors simply tell us to use all our media contacts in the proposal. If I already had media contacts I wouldn't have needed the book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable for teachers and others
As the Video Hound's Guide is for movies, this book is for songs. It categorizes the songs logically so you can always find a song that relates to what you are teaching to help engage kids, help them connect the content to their world, and sometimes even teach content. (Maybe ask your school librarian to buy a copy if you do not wish to spend the money on it.)

4-0 out of 5 stars The Green Book of Songs by Subject
This Book seems to be a great tool; I have not had the opportunity to really get into it yet!I am sure I will enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for tracking down obscure songs
Now in an updated and expanded fifth edition with over 14,000 songs added (and featuring over 35,000 songs overall), The Green Book Of Songs By Subject is a comprehensive and very strongly recommended, "user friendly" reference for looking up popular songs by subject. Basic topics such as Freedom, Rivers, specific states and cities, etc. are listed in alphabetical order; each listing is followed by appropriate song entries arranged by title. An especially excellent book for tracking down the title, composer, or publisher of popular as well as obscure songs, The Green Book Of Songs By Subject is a core addition to the reference shelves of academic music history reference collections, and would prove invaluable in the personal reference libraries of professional musicians, DJ's or music-writers who can't afford to waste time struggling to remember (or needing to track down) who composed, performed, or produced a given tune. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great inspiration
This book is so very helpful in planning speech and language therapy. The books suggested have been well researched, the plans explicit and easy to implement.I loved this book so much I used it as the "bible" of a group study another speech therapist and I did last year. She had never used literature as extensively as I have.As we delved into the wonderful children's books and how to use them, she found it to be an approach that is fun for both therapist and child, motivating and effective in bringing about significant change in children's speech and language.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful language facilitation book!
I am so pleased with this book -it helps me to plan lessons with my speech-language kids by using the children's books that they already know!I get so much help from this source, I don't what I would do without it!I use it with my own child, too.The activities are so fun and creative, there is never a dull moment.Hats off to J. Gebers for giving bothteachers and parents such a great reference tool!
