Ever wished you could keep up all the great children's books and pick the best ones to read aloud and recommend to your students?Need inspiration to liven up your lessons on library skills?Looking for more effective ways to collaborate with teachers? This book has it all!
5-0 out of 5 stars You Gotta Get This Book
Third time is the charm for Freeman. This book is much more than just a revised and updated version.Judy has put all the book suggestions and "germs" like always, but she has included enough other librarian and book info to keep you going through many school years to come. How to share great books, extension activities, program management ideas, favorites over the years, and Judy's insights about books are too numerous to mention. As a school librarian for more than 500 PreK-6th grade students I know I'll have plenty of ideas for great book sharing and fun all year.I see 8 classes of pre-reading, 3-5 year olds each week and I know Judy's insight will help me build a strong literacy foundation with them.I bought the hardback because the book is so big and I didn't want to worry about the binding giving into that weight. You need this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fleur's flight of fancy.
These facsimile pages from the twelve issues of Flair are a celebration of Fleur Cowles zest for creativity in the arts. The 338 pages must have been a challenge for the Hong Kong printers, they had to cope with various foldout pages, die-cut holes, different paper stock and bind in several short pages, two concertina foldouts and five sixteen page booklets.5-0 out of 5 stars The return of Flair
I first became acquainted with Fleur Cowles' revolutionary 'Flair' magazine during my childhood in the fifties. At that time the publication impressed me with its cultured blend of cosmopolitan sophistication and innovative design, although it didn't escape me that its pages also included a great deal of elitism, snobbery and self-congratulatory arrogance. Although I wasn't fortunate to keep any of the original issues, the magazine became a significant influence in the development of my literary and artistic tastes and in my life-long quest for beauty and elegance. For that I was grateful. So it was a joy to learn that a best-of compilation put together by Fleur Cowles herself had finally appeared. The original 1996 printing sold out before I could manage to acquire a copy and when Rizzoli recently published a second run I quickly got one. This edition has a foreword by writer-socialite Dominick Dunne. Now, is it really worth the rather steep price of [price]? Well... I think that for that kind of money the publishers could have managed to provide us with something much more substantial, for example: a slipcased set containing facsimile editions of all twelve original issues, rather than this comprehensive but ultimately limited look. A complete reprint would have given us the full impression of the range and period feel of a unique magazine, and at this price I think that they could have well afforded to do it. I understand that part of the reason for this expensive price tag is the snob appeal that has always been a part of the Flair mystique and that perhaps this offering is to be regarded as literary caviar for the more discerning (and well-off) among us. On the plus side I must say that the large-format book is lavishly printed, that the articles are indeed very well selected - containing not quite all but much of the best of the short-lived magazine - and that the presentation is very handsome indeed. Several of the covers are reproduced with their distinctive die-cuts and embossing and the book is housed in an elegant cloth-covered box. I still think it could have been more reasonably priced but there it is. Caviar lovers, enjoy it before it disappears again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Grab it!
Get this book.Do anything you have to in order to own it.I paid $250 at the Art Institute of Chicago because I was afraid I would miss out...again.This is a collector's piece if you got the first edition.Ifnot, don't hesitate. It is interesting, intriging, thought provoking, ahead of it's time....and not just for 'creative' types.Something goodfor everyone. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Revisor's Toolbox
I absolutely LOVE this book. While it is helpful to read After the End to get the theory etc, if you are a teacher who loves writing with your children and is looking for new ways to help your children truly REVISE their work, this book is for you.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This book is a strong compliment to Lane's earlier book, AFTER THE END.I highly recomend both, but this title will be less useful to those who have not read the earlier book. While AFTER THE END contained theory, activitysuggestions, and limited samples, the Tool Box is largely activities.Itcontains many useful ideas, most applicable accross grade levels 2-12,addressing the difficult problem of teaching genuine REVISION , rather thansimply re-typing or editing for conventions.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars new approach to history of books and place in the culture
St. Clair's voluminous book is important in the inter-related fields of publishing history, history of the book, and history of reading on two grounds--its methodology and its detailed data. St. Clair's commentaries are informative, and his deductions will likely be regarded as bases for further studies. But it is the methodology and the unprecedented details on book publishing and many individual titles contained in 13 appendices of more than 250 pages which will especially draw the attention of many readers, historians, professors, and others in this area. For the appendices somewhat schematically indicate the methodology and present the data for the deductions. The author's painstaking efforts and publisher's equally meticulous efforts to accurately record, classify, and arrange the novel data in smaller type with footnotes account for the high price of the book.

I attended a Christian Writer's Conference two years ago, a dizzying initiation into the subculture that produces much of the written material that American (at least) Christians read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything there is to know about the business
The first time writer faces a whole series of problems in even getting some to take them seriously. Can you imagine what it must have been like to go to a publisher and tell them that you were writing this seven volume series about a boy going to Wizzard's school.

4-0 out of 5 stars Robin Williams Design Workshop
I learned about this book at a recent seminar. Bought it here through Amazon. Was a little worried when I read the first chapter that it would be over my head because I am a total novice, but I soon found myself engrossed in the book. It really is very helpful and the repeatition of ideas and "rules" helps drive home the important stuff. Well laid out so you can skip the chapters that don't interest you. Although I would consider reading them. I found that certain ideas hit home better in some chapters than others and I think it has helped my overall design ability. Good Book especially for those of us who love how-to books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Robin Williams Design Workshop
This is a great reference for print design but the web site section is almost laughably outdated.Gone are the days of splash entry pages and HTML tables for non-conmplex layouts (now easily rendered by CSS). And who the heck is running 640x480 resolution on a 14 inch monitor these days??

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the real deal for record collectors!!!!
The best book out there for Beatle record collectors...hands down!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Something for every Beatle fan
I had heard that Bruce Spizer's books were full of images of record labels, so I wasn't sure I'd be interested in them. A friend of mine who is a serious collector told me this book was the one to start with. As it turns out, it combines lots of new information with a really great trip down memory lane. While I don't find every version of every label particularly interesting, there's a lot in this book that's REALLY great! The opening section on Beatlemania in America is an excellent overview of the subject. The chapters on each of the 45s include great images of picture sleeves and vintage Billboard ads; and Spizer describes in fascinating detail how the songs were written and recorded. It's hard to believe, but Capitol originally intended for "Act Naturally" to be the A side over "Yesterday." This was because in the early days of Beatlemania, Ringo was the most popular Beatle. (I preferred Paul.) This is just one of the great factoids that Spizer writes about and then illustrates - this one with images of Ringo on covers of a comic book and MAD magazine. The last section details how Capitol Records came to be and how the company creatively used merchandising and promotion to sell records (hard to believe the Beatles needed help!) - again, lots of pictures, e.g., actual press kits, etc. Although I skipped over some of the technical information, it's a great reference book besides being a fun read. The information is new, the stories are fascinating and the pictures really help tell the story. This book was completely worth the price - now I'm saving to buy his other ones!

1-0 out of 5 stars who is this book for?
These reviews are very misleading... they led me to purchase this book! Once I got a copy I was beyond disappointed: this book is an extensive collection of record labels. Little more. I mean, who is this for? People who are interested in how 45s got labeled (or often mislabeled) in the 60s? When is says "Beatles story ON capitol records", it means literally. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Become the funniest person in print with this basic comedy writing handbook for humor writers
Become the funniest person in print with this basic comedy writing handbook for humor writers, Mel Helitzer & Mark Schatz's Comedy Writing Secrets, 2nd Edition which offers up exercises, details on differences between different types of comedy writing, and tips for writing for specific markets, from sitcom and television to greeting cards and T-shirts. Tips are blocked in sidebars of at-a-glance information, discussions are filled with comedy quotes throughout, and insights on what makes something funny offers up a fine pairing of exercises and insights on humor.

4-0 out of 5 stars A book to get you started
I have the first edition of this book (figures they'd release a second edition after I buy the first) and learned a lot from it. It reads like a college textbook and the joke examples aren't funny in the least, but the formulas you learn here are used by comedians and sitcom writers all the time. Just turn on your favorite sitcom one night and count the various joke formulas used over the course of a half hour show if you doubt Helitzer's knowledge. You'll find that he describes nearly every one in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A guide for humor writers who want to master the basics to become professionals

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy with my purchase.
The book I ordered was used but in very good condition.
5-0 out of 5 stars A text that gets results
A text that has been around since the late 1960's through seven editions certainly has more durability than most.I've been using Three Genres in beginning creative writing classes, both on-campus and online, since the fourth edition, and I have yet to see a better text for the course.Minot's balance of traditional and newer approaches together with his lists of pitfalls for beginning writers may not appeal to all instructors, especially those with a less eclectic agenda than his, but a great many students over the years have appreciated his approach.
3-0 out of 5 stars Parts Worth Using, particularly for poetry
I find that this text provides a better discussion of poetry than Janet Burroway's recent creative writing book, though her text is stronger in its discussion of fiction. While I don't agree with everything Minot says about writing (he can be too simplistic and authoritative in ways that could limit writers' expression and experimentation), and I don't like his selection of poems or stories very much, I use his book as simply one more resource for students. He offers another voice besides my own, and the class can dispute or agree with his comments if we so desire. The poetry chapters I've found most helpful are "Images," "The Sound of Words," and "Traditional Rhythms." I've also used parts of his fiction discussion. I supplement the book with many handouts (mostly poems) and some excerpts from Steve Kowit's In the Palm of Your Hand and Dorianne Laux/Kim Addonizio's The Poet's Companion. I use Burroway's text primarily for the fiction unit, and I also use parts of Jerome Stern's Making Shapely Fiction. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Encouraging Yet Realistic Advice
This book spoke directly to me, a person finishing her dissertation who saw the potential for publishing but didn't know how to get started. The author works for a publishing company and once wrote a dissertation, so his advice is trustworthy.I also felt that the ideas he shared were practical and doable. Having read this book gave me a clear sense of direction as I began my own book manuscript, and I kept the author's advice clearly in mind as I wrote. One downside: The book is wordy and leans toward a scholarly tone. While it isn't exactly an enjoyable read, it is high interest if the reader is thinking about publishing all or parts of her dissertation, and certainly those of us who have written dissertations can get through scholarly text!I recommend this book.It is one of a kind on the market right now. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny
This book is a must-have for teachers and librarians, but most importantly, for parents who want a culturally literate child. As a teacher (grades 4th - 12th), I recommend the Core Knowledge Series by the same author as the framework for home schooling. Please don't wait, parents!Get this book and start collecting these resources! You can't rely on any school to teach your child all they should know.If you are reading this, you are a conscientious parent.Your child's school may well be focused on teaching basic life skills such as manners and self esteem, because not all parents are conscientious. After all, parents are ultimately responsible for their child's education.Even if you aren't home schooling, get this to help you supplement your child's education.Get the "What your K/1st/2nd...6th grader Needs to Know" books, too.You will be amazed at how much these books enrich your child's education, and ultimately their life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book
This book is very nice to have if you homeschool. It is very easy to use and a great resource. It is broken into curriculum areas including Visual Arts, which has really helped since I did not know much about the subject.

3-0 out of 5 stars Books to Build On
This is a useful book but one I don't believe you need to spend your money on as it is available at the library for free - and it's not a book you need to refer to daily or even weekly.Check it from the library, make yourself a list of what books it lists that you need from that, and return it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless
The invaluable information in this book is a must for everyone in the music industry. Publishing is how the monies from musical works are generated, handled, and distributed. This book goes beyond the pay one is stipulated to receive and explains the origins and derivations of such stipulations. Mr. Whitsett has amassed IMPORTANT information here... good for him... great for us.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great piece ofwork
I highly recommend this book to gain greater insights in the Music business or any business. donald does it again. this is one of the only legal books on the Music industry I would recommend. It was a great buy along with a couple of manuals I purchased from Musicbrains.net entitled the Indie label Kit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book that will answer many questions
Aspiring musicians have alot of questions about this ever-changing industry. This is one book that remains as up-to-date as can be, and answers all these questions and more. You don't end up having information shoved down your throat, but somehow when you're done reading you end up feeling much more knowledgable. For a more step-by-step guide, check out "How To Make A Furtune In The Music Industry By Doing It Yourself: Your Personal Step-By-Step Guide To Having A Successful Career In The Music Business. ... To Sell Music, Book Shows And Get Noticed!" in addition to this book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Basic Summary of the "how's" not enough "Ins"
This book does all right for the writer who does not have the information already.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for self-publishers
Although this book targets authors with book contracts, it offers plenty of info for self-publishers (SP). I am still in an SP learning curve and have so far read eight books on promo/marketing/publicity. Concise and clearly written, this book offers so many useful tips, that it should be the first one you try, despite the fact that one-third of the book does not apply to SP. I had a loosely formed marketing strategy before, but now the early stages are in sharp focus, thanks to this book. The only beef I have is that the author did not summarize all the webiste addresses at the end of each chapter. Finally, this book and Dan Poynter's Self-Publishing Manual are thekey titles necessary to make an informed decision about whether SP is right for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book could have used more ideas
I enjoyed this book but I could have used more ideas on how to get your book publicized and more examples of how things are done in the book promoting world. ... Read more
