1-0 out of 5 stars Vomit is in the Mouth of the Beholder
Creativity, Unleashing the Forces Within, Osho
3-0 out of 5 stars First Osho book
I'm in high school and this was the first Osho book and only book so far that I have read.It did help me understand how to think more creatively and has several great quotes that will leave you analyzing everything you do in your life from the day you put the book down.He encourages an open mind yet is very direct on his religious beliefs at times which may be hard for some people to get around.I'm not too religious myself, but I did enjoy the different spiritual interpretations and comparisons. His action vs. activity section will leave you asking yourself why you ever watch tv or do anything non-creative at all.It will motivate you to not only do more with your life, but also help you think more outside the box. He does like to repeat himself a little bit which I actually liked instead of a beginning to end straight and narrow approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Master
Osho is a master spiritual teacher. He draws from all different traditions to express points that lie behind the symbolic languages used by these traditions.I recommend highly his works. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the go-to style guide for biblical scholars
As the premier North-American-based professional association of biblical scholars, the Society of Biblical Literature ('SBL') not only publishes the prestigious and tightly-edited Journal of Biblical Literature ('JBL'); its influence has a knock-on effect on other journals in this and ancillary fields.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Required Text!
This book must be on your shelf within easy reach if you are a graduate student of religion, a seminary student, or a scholar in the wide field of religion. Why?Because this book gives you the information you need to make your papers, articles, and books conform to the most used style in religious literature today--SBL.
4-0 out of 5 stars Standard manual on style
The SBL Handbook of style is designed for those who are writing papers or dissertations in the field of ancient Near Eastern, Biblical and early Christian Studies. Most matters of style are comprehensively addressed, and where they are not, the editors refer the reader to the Chicago Manual of Style. The book is extremely useful for those who want to standardise their abbreviations and references. Several issues will have to be resolved in the next edition. First, although the book is nicely printed, the binding is poor, and fell apart only after I had used the book a few times. Second, several essential abbreviations are missing from the list of Greek and Latin works. Third, not all abbreviations are located in the same part of the book, and so one has to keep going backwards and forwards to find the appropriate reference. Fourth, the editors sometimes display a dogmatic approach to style. For example they insist that writers ought to use Miriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary for their spelling. This dictionary however is only one alongside many other excellent dictionaries such as, the American Heritage, and the Random House. These criticisms should not detract from the importance and usefulness of this volume, which I recommend wholeheartedly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Be sure you get the third edition
The third edition of this work is definitely the best.It contains the index to the entire 28 volumes in the series, which covers every county in Ireland. The second edition was published earlier, and does not contain the complete index to the series. The third edition has all the family history information from the second edition, PLUS the complete series info. This book contains the largest collection of Irish Family Names, locations and arms ever put to print.

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid and accessibly presented genealogical reference
Now in an expanded and updated third edition, The Book Of Irish Families Great & Small by genealogy expert Michael C. O'Laughlin (Editor of the monthly "Journal of Irish Families) is a solid and accessibly presented genealogical reference based upon ancient and modern manuscripts. Offering 20,000 Irish family names, 700 illustrated coats of arms, ancient maps and illustrations, step-by-step guides for tracing Irish family roots, and so much more, The Book Of Irish Families Great & Small is a first-rate and enthusiastically recommended reference for any dedicated genealogist or aspiring family historian seeking to track down their Irish roots.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Equals Too Little
I had high hopes for this book when I ordered it along with the author's books for Waterford and Cork. I was disappointed with all of them. In trying to create such an all-encompassing book, the author has published a work that fails to provide much information on any particular family. And he manages to leave out valuable information. For example, in his book "Families of County Cork" he gives a very short paragraph about the Sherlock family being there, but fails to mention in this "Irish Families" book that the family is found in Cork, even though the Cork book was published first.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars IT HELPED ME!

So, I bought this book thinking it would be just a kick start in my kick-[...] career. Yet, as i read over the pages it was awe-inspiring. 5-0 out of 5 stars Looking Beyond Oneself
I was amazed at the breadth of experiences related in this book - from the humblest of circumstances to a president of the United States. "By Their Works" provides a refreshing perspective: one of men who looked beyond themselves to a greater good or a greater human need. The people profiled are all members of a fraternal organization, the Knights of Columbus, which provides the common thread. The narratives are all unique however. The stories of the military chaplains, who risked their lives to comfort or minister to fallen soldiers, were particularly inspiring. I found the story of Ted van der Zalm very humbling. He mortgaged his home to buy a well-digging rig and drove his family from Ontario to Guatemala to give people in that country access to potable water. My favorite profile though was that of Harry McKillop, who made a "second career" of finding and freeing American POWs in Southeast Asia. He eventually expanded his efforts to liberating political prisoners in such places as Iran, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. This book gives countless examples of heroic and simple acts of charity. It is an easy read, cleanly digested in about 65 chapters. It's a book that will make you want to make a difference, rather than just marveling at how others have done so.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice for Knights
You would be forgiven if this book's subtitle - Profiles of Men of Faith Who Made a Difference - made you think of William Lloyd Garrison, Martin Luther King, Jr. or Mohandas Gandhi. But this book is only about the Roman Catholic men of the Knights of Columbus, or "KofC." Covering the period from the organization's founding in 1882 to the present day, the book profiles 60 men whom the author feels exemplifies the Knights' mission of charity and patriotic values. The reader might be surprised to learn that notables such as Babe Ruth, John Kennedy and Vince Lombardi were in the KofC.
5-0 out of 5 stars nice collection of personalities
I have received my copy of BY THEIR WORKS and found it a diverse compilation of personalities drawn from every walk of life who sought to make the world a bit better through their membership in theKnights of Columbus.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book for Writers and Map Lovers
This book defies genre. It is an examination of the correlation between writers and map-makers.If you love maps, and want to incorporate some of that passion into your writing, this is the book for you.I find myself coming back to it frequently, like a reference book on how to write the sort of story I'd like to read.
5-0 out of 5 stars A satisfying read.
While I'm only just halfway through this book -- after purchasing it only a day ago, I couldn't stop reading! -- I can say I highly recommend this book. While not a "reference" book in the sense that I will go back to it for how-tos and guides, it is filled with gems of information, quotes and story snippets. This is the sort of book you go back to again and again for encouragement and inspiration. I can hardly wait to finish it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reading
This book is so well-written, and it branches out to cover so many different topics. Also, it is a beautiful book--just the right weight, beautiful paper and cloth binding, and it's easy to open the book flat for easy viewing of its many illustrations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Writers, You Are Not Alone
For many years I experienced writer's block, lonliness, doubt, fear of rejection and just plain fear. Just like the summary on the back of the book. I am glad that I am not alone and it made me realize that is part of the the writing life. This book gives hope and support that yes you can make it as a writer maybe not the riches in terms of money but maybe to quench your thirsty soul. Dennis Palumbo doesn't give away all his secrets(of course he still has a practice to run as a psychotherapist) but enough answers to make you realize yes you are not nuts or crazy but simply a writer. A good reference book to keep by your writing desk whenever you feel down or have the inevitable writer's block.

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly helpful book
Palumbo is a writer turned psychotherapist. He saw all his own problems writing, and understood others also had them, and found his new voaction counceling other authors at various stages in their careers. As such the book differs from most other writer's guide books. He focuses on the internal processes of writing: self-doubt, negative judgement, hopelessness, loneliness, lack of ideas, etc. And he does give very valuable advice. Basically, he tells us to turn our weaknesses into strenghts. We can use anything in our writing, even our procrastination and depression. An idea that actullay goes back all the way to Nietzsche.
3-0 out of 5 stars Some great suggestions, but could be better
Eric Maisel's "Living the Writer's Life" is one of the best books I've found on the writer's life, right up there with Rachel Simon's "The Writer's Survival Guide". Palumbo's, unfortunately, is not so spectacular, although it definitely has its merits. Read more

We authors need to stay informed on all aspects of the writing business. Mark Levine's The Fine Print of Self-Publishing provides quality, up-to-date information that can help us make the best choices for our books and our careers.
5-0 out of 5 stars This in depth guide is undoubtedlyan excellent working resource for anyone contemplating self-publishing.
Many of us have a story to tell, perhaps, it is a work of fiction or non-fiction, one that may be entertaining, useful, informative, or inspirational. However, the foremost difficulty we encounter is locating a publisher who will make our dreams come true. As pointed out in Mark Levine's The Fine Print of Self-Publishing: The Contracts & Services of 48 Major Self-Publishing Companies-Analyzed, Ranked & Exposed, until recently there only existed three ways to become a published author. These can broken down as follows:having a traditional publisher take you on: pay a vanity publisher a great sum of money to print your book: or take the self-publishing route which required you to handle all aspects of book publishing from printing, design, formatting, etc.

1-0 out of 5 stars horrible writing
The good thing about the book is its abundant information (more than you need, actually). However, the writing is horrible!I can't imagine how a person--a college professor in this case--can come up with such a poor job despite a very clear-cut framework.Redundant and illogical paragraphs are no surprise in this book. The first edition is bad, but believe me, the second one is even worse! Also, be fully prepared for loads of typographical errors and the mix-up of figures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely informative.
My professor assigned The Book Publishing Industry as a textbook for a graduate-level international publishing course. This book discusses the characteristics of the US book industry, channels of distribution, mergersand acquisitions, business operations, editing, marketing, role of theconsumer, intellectual property and censorship, and the effect ofelectronic development and multimedia. There are plenty of facts andfigures in the forms of charts and tables for those who need them.Thereare samples of book order forms, invoices, and job descriptions in thepublishing field. This book also contains chapter notes, a bibliography, glossary, and index. So, while there is plenty of information, it's nottoo hard to find and understand.4-0 out of 5 stars THE BUSINESS SIDE OF PUBLISHING

I'm a professional copyeditor and consider Einsohn's book to be an essential reference.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad exercises
The exercises in the book seem to be purposefully difficult. Is this to discourage prospective copyeditors or so that Einsohn can show off her years of experience? In order to be instructional, the explanations should fully cover the concepts that one will be tested on in the exercises.Anyone who can read should be able to read the text and then successfully complete the exercises. This is basic to good instructional design. Instead, in the exercises, Einsohn throws in the exceptions to the rules or tests on concepts only hinted at in the text.Einsohn reminds me of the bad teachers we have all experienced at one time or another who get satisfaction from confusing students by talking around a subject instead of teaching the subject directly.Success of students is not the goal of these teachers. There are many finer points in copyediting, but there are sets of rules governing them all.It should be a simple matter to present the rules and then test the student on those rules. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just the Facts, Ma'am
So many books about how to get your book published are really either books about writing or the disguised memoir of an acquisition editor. But a person trying to get their first book published really just needs some bare bones advice about the mechanics of publishing. When should you send a query letter instead of a proposal? When should you write the book first and when should you just spec it out. When do you need an agent and when can you go it alone. When is it OK to call somebody? What is the big deal with this SASE that everyone keeps talking about? The Complete Idiot's Guide to Getting Published provides the nuts and bolts advice you need to get started in your search for a publisher. It is not magic. It is just hard work. And this book lays it out beautifully.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most practical book on publishing that I've ever read
I am a freelance writer and owner of several bookshelves literally groaning with stacks of books on writing. I've devoured books on writing the way my teenage daughter digs into pizza, always hoping for some mantra that would help pave my way to publishing success. Although I am a successful magazine (Woman's Day, Cosmopolitan, etc.) and newspaper (Chicago Tribune, etc.) author, and have contributed to several anthologies, I have yet to hold a book in my hand with my name on the cover. THE COMPLETE IDIOT'S GUIDE TO GETTING PUBLISHED is the most practical book on publishing that I've ever read, and I've read them all! Not only is each chapter packed with advice for writers at every level of the publishing process, but the text is highly readable and even entertaining. All the sidebars and boxes keep the large volume of information from ever becoming dry or boring. And the icing on the cake is a CD-ROM with templates for pitch letters and proposals--just what every writer needs, when he's faced with the daunting task of selling himself to publishers. Thanks so much, Sheree and Jennifer! ... Read more

In this fast-paced information age, it takes a lot for a writer to stand out.In Writing for the Soul, best-selling author Jerry B. Jenkins instructs his fellow writers how to do just that through personal anecdotes and helpful advice.Beginning writers are often blind to the obvious mistakes and cliches in their own work, but Jenkins' book helps to reveal when and where these problems occur and how writers can avoid them.He also demonstrates how to get into the writing industry more easily and how, in the process, to remain a faithful Christian and witness.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Real Question Is...
The real question is not whether--if you live to write or write to live--you should read Writing For The Soul. The real question is whether or not you should read it more than once.
5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good!
I was not a "Left Behind" fan. I thought Jerry Jenkins a great storyteller, but not a great writer. And I never would have bought his new book on writing if an accomplished and well published author friend hadn't recommended it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Information
As a first-time author and fledgling book promoter, I found a wealth of information neatly heaped in this frugal package. The book is like a smorgasbord, so laden with tender morsels that one can hardly wait to taste a bite here and a bite there, allow digestion, and then go back for more.I especially enjoyed experimenting with the Amazon Perks explained in Chapter 32, but the entire book is loaded with careful guidance from an inspirational lady who has learned by trial and error and is willing to share her knowledge of things that work.Thank you, Carolyn, for writing THE FRUGAL BOOK PROMOTER!
5-0 out of 5 stars A Real World Guide for Authors - Practical and Wise!
I have been reading author Carolyn Howard-Johnson's newsletters for what seems to be years now, but I finally got to read her definitive book on marketing called "The Frugal Book Promoter: How To Do What Your Publisher Won't" and it was beyond my expectations. There are many very good books on this subject but this is truly "the gold standard" from which all those other books should be compared and judged. It is really that good.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stopped in my Tracks
When the book arrived in today's mail, I stopped working on the Internet and got busy reading the book. The first chapter which grabbed my attention is Chapter 32 (Amazon Offers Perks: Use Them to Your Advantage). I already had Advantage and Associates accounts. I had been approved for the new program, Author Connects, and I was preparing to set up my profile. This book arrived at just the right time to help me do this. Before returning to my computer, I "had to read" Chapter 4 (Build Credentials for Your Kit) and Chapter 6 (Use the Web). I already have a website which gets a lot of traffic. I saw points which will help get even more traffic. I have underlined a lot of things. I am ready to work on the computer some more although I am eager to return to benefiting from the rest of the book soon, very soon. ... Read more
