Warning "Diatribe" coming
This book would have been fine had it been published 20 years ago before the saturation of critical theory. Now it just feels like a wounded discourse from someone who went to grad school in the 60's.

Fairly valuable for getting the big picture
As a first year law student, and with finals quickly approaching, I was desperate for a book that would help me make sense of it all. I found this book to be pretty helpful. It made me take a step back from what I was studying to get a good look at the overall picture, which is really important. Finals are still about two weeks away, but I'm feeling more confident now. Don't get me wrong... this book is in now way a substitute for test preparation, but it does help you understand why somethings are the way they are.

It is really fundamental
This book has helped lawyers from other countries to understand in a better and general way the American legal system.It has an overview of areas such as criminal law, torts, contracts, commercial law, immigration,labor, among others.I recommend this book as an introduction to the legalsystem for non lawyers or for foreign lawyers. ... Extra Material for Studying
LSAT 180 is interesting in that it is supposed to be more difficult than regular LSAT questions but is also intended to help improve your LSAT taking-skills.The questions are difficult but all they aren't perfect.
Get Real PrepTest Questions
As one of the other reviewers pointed out, the questions used for prep in this book are very different from the actual LSAT questions that you'll be tested on.Not only are the style of writing and the format of the questions different in LSAT 180 than on an actual LSAT exam, but also, an equally persuasive case could be made for more than one of the answer choices in some of LSAT 180's Kaplan-created questions.The same isn't true on an actual LSAT exam (or is very rarely true) because once the subtleties of actual PrepTest questions are mastered, there is almost always a clearly superior answer.On LSAT 180, I found myself unconvinced in several instances by Kaplan's explanations as to why their preferred answer choice was superior to one of the other answer choices available.This never happens on a real LSAT PrepTest once you have grasped the stimulus and the question stem, with all their subtleties. ... Nonsense
This book is what happens when zealots with a political agenda try to mask their actions as being compassionate.There is deliberate twisting of Hague convention rules of warfare to fit their marxist utopian vision (NY defense lawyers, surprise surprise).Fortunately, judging from the other reviews here, they seem to be preaching only to the same, small clueless choir.I imagine that since the author is personally involved in the matter he has financial reasons to publicize the "torture".

The Torture Papers:Road to Abu Ghraib
This is an excellent resource for any serious scholar or researcher dealing with the laws of war, the Iraq War or torture issues.It is a broad compilation of original source material, mostly post 9/11; with its depth (over 1200 pages), it may be too much for the casual reader (if so, try Torture and Truth, by Mark Danner), but for serious research, it is essential.

This comprehensive and current compilation makes clear that our government has sanctioned practices not only outlawed by international conventions against torture, to which we are signatories, but which discracefully echo the techniques of tyrants through the ages. The documentation will make it impossible for Americans to claim that they didn't know what is being done in our name. I am satified with the service

Better than I expected.
I am pleasantly surprised by the readability of this useful book.The book kept my attention, and it was very helpful and informative.

Worthy advice only exceeded by challenging exercises
Bryan Garner brings clarity and insight to the confounding world of legal writing."Legal Writing in Plain English" contains dozens of comments and guidelines that should be burned into the brain of every attorney.Some of these are obvious (e.g., use a readable typeface), while others are more nuanced (e.g., delete perhaps the legal drafter's favorite legalism, "provided that").Each suggestion urges the writer toward a simple yet difficult goal -- be a good writer so that your reader doesn't have to work so darn hard to understand you.

Excellent resource for artists
This is an excellent resource to define and explain legal issues in the arts. It is a little dry in some parts but far easier to read than books written for the legal profession. I have been using this book as a textbook for a college class at an art school for graphic design students for several years.
Great Reference Guide
Even if you have the luxury of an attorney that speicalizes in art contracts, as I do, this is a great book of forms to keep handy for quick reference. My advice is to get it with his other book: Business & Legal Forms for Fine Artists also by Tad Crawford

If not this book, what else?
As the title of the book stated, "Legal guide for the VISUAL ARTIST", the book covers information that is aimed at VISUAL artists, including photographers, painters, printmakers, designers, sculptors, illustrators, textile designers, cartoonists, and craftspeople. Wow!Read more

Current law student
I was not very impressed with this book.This is even more true as I continue my legal education.The advice for those thinking of going to law school seemed like common sense.Some of the 1L information was good but a lot does not really apply unless you are going to a school similar to those the 'mentors' attended.Other items that they say will help you get ahead just seem like shortcuts that will probably burn you in the long run.
Beacon in the darkness
Law School Confidential is a must read for anyone considering law school.It's very helpful when you get there, too. The book is a beacon in the darkness of the first days of class. I consult it on a regular basis.

time-tested excellence
I remember getting an earlier rendition of this book when I was in grade school, and now while in law school, it still comes in handy. If you are in any class or position where you need to write letters, compositions or just about anything else, you need this book. It will tell you when to use what word, when not to use what word, and is easy to use. Can't beat it!

Great reference, very friendly.
The Redbook is a great have-by-your-side manual for legal or other writing.

Should be on all attorneys' book shelves
As a gramarian and etymologist by avocation, my tastes are a bit weird.Maybe that's why I actually enjoyed reading this bookcasually.Each of Garner's books belongs on the bookshelf of any attorney who considers himself a professional.My pet peeve is the attorney who I know is writing to impress the reader with his writing skills as opposed to the attorney who is writing to persuade the reader.The former will not have Garner's books in his library. ... Extremely Useful
I'm starting my second year of law school. I got this book near the end of my first year, and it proved to be an invaluable tool for editing journals and working for law firms over the summer. I wish I had this earlier.

This is, by far, the single best resource on legal usage one can buy.I never cease to be amazed at how often I pull this book off of my shelf to find it giving me a clear and accurate answer to a usage question.I purchased this book several years ago after attending one of Garner's legal writing seminars.That seminar and this book have dramatically improved my legal writing skills.Those two tools positively influence my writing every single day.If you follow Garner's advice and guidance, you will eliminate deadening and condescending legalese from your legal writing and replace it with clear and concise prose.My clients appreciate receiving contracts that are actually readable and my contracts are less frequently subject to alternative interpretations because ambiguities are largely eliminated.As a lawyer or paralegal, do yourself a favor and buy this book.Better yet, buy this book and take Garner's Advanced Legal Drafting seminar.You won't regret it.
