5-0 out of 5 stars GIAN FIERO ON KOHN ON MUSIC LICENSING
Simply put: This is the bible of music licensing. It's not as cheap as the bible and you don't have a prayer of finding it much cheaper than the used versions that someone foolishly gives up on Amazon, but regardless of the price, it's worth every penny. If you want to truly understand the mechanics, logistics, and legalities of music licensing, learn it from the authority who was sorting out licensing issues concerning the Internet and digital distribution over 10 years ago - before it became a "hot" topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable tool, and totally unknown to many who'd benefit
I discovered this book when I was researching an article "Who owns the rights? Copyright, the law and licensing the show," which was published in the Summer 1999 issue of the Educational Theatre Associationquarterly Teaching Theatre (Volume 10, Number 4) and which is now availableonline (though the reviewer guidelines do not allow me to post the URL, soanyone interested will have to email me at knscott@juno.com for it). Kohnon Music Licensing is a most valuable resource for anyone who either doesmusical theatre, or uses music in theatrical production, since it makesclear aspects of musical licensing that I am sure are as mysterious to manyothers as they were to me before reading this book. In my opinion, everytheatre educator or community theater producer/director should read bothChapter 18, "The Grand Rights Controversy", and Chapter 14,"Synchronization Licenses," before producing another musical (or excerptfrom one) or using any copyright-protected music "dramatically"(a term defined in the book) in the production of any play. AND the authorsmaintain a Website to which readers can bring any question still unclearafter reading the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Wills & Trusts Students
I usually don't use hornbooks, but I was stumped with all the Wills and Trusts material.I initially got the Examples & Explanations book, which was a HORRIBLE MISTAKE.It lacks even the most basic concepts.I then went for Emanuel's, which was keyed to our textbook, and it was a dream come true, especially the mini briefs. ... This book was nice and simple.A good summary of what you need to know. The section on agency was great.I think he got a little carried away in the partnerships section when he compared RUPA and UPA.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants a comprehensive summary of the law of agency, partnerships, and unincorporated entities. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars average
This book contained a few moderately useful lists, but for the most part contained little of particular value. It is too superficial to be of much use to a large firm merger, and bears little relevancy to the needs of a small firm merger. The most useful part of the book is not the book itself, but the accompanying forms disk, which can help provide a little structure to your thinking when evaluating and planning a law firm merger.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too short and superficial
Too short and over priced.I bought this book in March 2005 for the list price, now that the price is reduced, it might be a better deal.Still expensive for a paperback of only 208 pages, almost half checklists and exhibits. It is authored by Hildebrandt International, which provides consulting advice to merging law firms.I felt I was reading a promotional brochure for the consulting service. There is some useful insight but at a common-sense level, not so much that is penetrating insight.Obscure topic, so if you want information you might have limited choices, hence my purchase.Another book (not purchased by this reviewer) Law Firm Mergers : Taking a Strategic Approach is also by Hildebrandt; why do they have two books on the same topic? ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but Flawed
The strength of this book is that it provides a comprehensible introduction to intellectual property - focusing on patents. If you want to learn something about intellectual property without wading too deep into lawyerspeak - this book may interest you. In addition to patents - trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets are discussed; other aspects of intellectual property are waved at. The last chapter provides dated coverage of intellectual property as it relates to the Internet - mostly focusing on business method patents. This is interesting from a business perspective but the authors do not seem versed in the technical aspects of E-Commerce. Laches and estoppel are demystified and the bookpresents what looks like solid advice on how to enforce your rights against a group of infringers (attack the weakest one first). There are clearly divided sections (making the frequent pauses that I occasionally made between readings convenient), key ideas are highlighted in an attractive manner and charts and graphs are well presented.
4-0 out of 5 stars A clear guide to IP
This book is both concise and complete in covering the major aspects of IP.Using language and examples that are easy to understand, I found this book to be a quick intro to the fast-growing world of IP.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another masterstroke for these authors.
Cross-examination. The mere utterance of these words can strike fear in even the most seasoned testifying expert. Never testified before or just starting out in litigation consulting? The prospect of cross-examination can provide more consternation, self-doubt and sleeplessness than a teenage first date. And, with good reason. The purpose of cross-examination is for opposing counsel to find any little chink in your testimonial armor and exploit it to discredit you, your credibility, your honor, and ultimately, your professional viability.Still don't have your attention? Try this on for size.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blackmun's Papers
Please be aware before you pick up this book that it is based almost solely on the personal and professional papers of Justice Blackmun, which he left to the U.S. archives for analysis five years after his death.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not so much a Biography....
What Greenhouse has done with this book is taken a Lifetime Justice Blackmun's papersand condensed it into the "Best of"highlights.
3-0 out of 5 stars Paragon of Liberalism
Towards the end of the Civil War, Lincoln wrote that "I claim not to have controlled events, but confess plainly that events have controlled me." The same might be said of Harry Blackmun's life. Greenhouse however demonstrates that Blackmun also controlled events as well. The author writes that Justice Blackmun "was to be linked forever to a cause that had scarcely been his own." Greenhouse's book portrays Blackmun as incredulous at first as the nation reacted to Roe v. Wade. In fact, Blackmun initially wrote that the reaction to Roe would be "an unsettled period for a while" not fully realizing the ramifications of what he wrote. Yet, throughout his years on the Court, Blackmun came to the realization that Roe, like it or not, was his legacy, and as the Rehnquist court took over, he defended it to his utmost in Webster and Casey.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference
It is difficult to say whether the contentious atmosphere that currently exists regarding the legal opinions of the Supreme Court is greater than any other time in the history of the United States. There have been times, especially during the Civil War and World War I when the Supreme Court raised the ire of many a citizen. Some of the "activist" justices, as some of them are now called, could perhaps be designated as "activist light" if compared with some of the justices of the past. This book gives ample evidence for this comparison, but also gives information on a wide variety of legal issues that the Supreme Court has had to deal with throughout its history. It would probably not be read from cover to cover, but instead serves as a general reference for those readers who are not and do not intend to become legal scholars, but are curious as to the reasoning patterns deployed by the justices who sat on the Court. Readers who are approaching this subject for the first time will find many surprises about the Court, both in the opinions expressed by the judges and in their personal histories and backgrounds. It is fair to say that legal opinions are guided predominantly by the historical context in which they are put forth, and this claim seems to gain more substantiation as more articles in this book are read and studied.
5-0 out of 5 stars Massive tome on the Supreme Court.
_The Oxford Companion to the United States Supreme Court of the United States_(Kermit Hall, ed.) is a massive tome containing a vast swath of information: cases, traditions, theories of constitutional interpretations, historical events, and biographies of all of the Supreme Court Justices. It has the same material (word for word) as Kermit Hall's _The Oxford Guide to United States Supreme Court Decisions_ but this is much more worthwhile reference work because it contains more contextual material than the cases themselves. This book is by no means exhaustive, but it provides a very informative overview of what the Supreme Court has been up to for the past two hundred years and the very different personalities serving on the body.

5-0 out of 5 stars A worthy companion
As the nation prepares to welcome the seventeenth Chief Justice, this book is a wonderful guide to the processes of the least 'media-exposed' branch of the federal government and its highest institution, the Supreme Court.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book for new practitioners!
I have only purchased this book tonight, yet not on Amazon.com.I actually went to Borders and paid full price.Reason being, I could not wait to get my hands on a reference book to help me conceptualize projects and cases that I presently deal with at work as a new estate and tax planning attorney.I hear about ABC trusts, GST trusts, Living Trusts, just to name a few, every day.Yet I don't have the slightest idea about the particular mechanics of many of these valuable estate planning and tax saving tools.

5-0 out of 5 stars California Landlord's Law Book is a must!
I have been a landlord for 12 years. Every few years I purchase a revised version just to be sure that laws haven't changed that I should know about. This book is a must if you have rentals in California. It is very easy to understand, it has all the forms you may need on CD and can be referred to quickly when questions come up. I feel I am a better landlord because of this book. I have also loaned it to my friends when they felt that their landlord had not be treating them fairly. They also found it very helpful. I wouldn't be without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful and practical handbook for Landlords
I read through the book before renting my place, and it provided me with very useful tips on the legality of various aspects of renting one's place. It also had templates and forms which were very handy, in drawing up a lease, issuing a receipt or generating a checklist. I would recommend this book for any landlord, whether you are renting out one house or multiple.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information for first time California Landlord
This was the only book I needed to become a landlord in California. With the included forms on CD, I was able to easily create a lease for my tenants and feel confident that I was doing everything legally. I read the relevant sections of the book and will keep it on hand if any rental problems show up. I am very satisfied with the book selection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An informative reference guide to the complex laws and regulations concerning neighborly disputes and intricacies
The newly expanded and updated fifth edition of Neighbor Law: Fences, Trees, Boundaries, And Noise by attorney and mediator Cora Jordan is an informed and informative reference guide to the complex laws and regulations concerning neighborly disputes and intricacies. Deftly covering laws concerning such issues as water runoff and flooding, trees that hang over property line, problems with neighboring businesses, noisy neighbors, unclear boundary lines, blocked views, high or unsightly "spite" fences, dangerously deteriorating fences, dangers to children, and so much more, Neighbor Law is a complete and thorough compendium ideal for non-specialist general readers wanting to know (and be able to enforce) their rights as a property owner in a neighborhood of property owners. Neighbor Law is very strongly recommended for anyone searching for a "user friendly" informational documentation of all the rules and regulations concerning proper neighbor responsibilities and an understanding of what can and can not be lawfully done when a conflict arises between neighbors.

Barron's "Dictionary of Legal Terms" is a solid text. When I asked a law friend of mine which law dictionary I should purchase he told me that "Black's" was the best law dictionary out there. However, it is rather expensive at eighty or so dollars. Even the pocket version of the text is at least twenty dollars. So I sprang for this law dictionary at about eight dollars.

Legal terms presented in a way that can be understood by all.Very helpful information in section-"KEY TO EFFECTIVE USE OF THIS DICTIONARY"

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this dictionary!
I bought this dictionary 4 years ago and since then it has been invaluable to me in getting through law school and the bar exam. My copy is so tattered and worn out, I'm thinking of buying a new one to replace it. I highly recommend it over Black's and others that have traditionally been regarded essential for law students and lawyers. Too often with the other legal dictionaries, you look up a word, and then to understand the given definition you end up having to look up additional words. Not so with this book--it lays out legal definitions in the most simple and straightforward manner possible. For many terms, it even gives short hypotheticals to illustrate the term in its proper context.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great work of political philosophy
Rawls has done a marvelous job condensing the theory first presented in his massive A Theory of Justice into 200 lucid, succint, beautifully-argued pages.5-0 out of 5 stars Culmination of a half century's work on political philosophy
Whether one agrees or disagrees with Rawls' theory of justice, almost all contemporary moral and political philosophy takes place in its shadow. If not for A Theory of Justice, generations of grad students would still indulge in tired debates over the meaning of Kant's categorical imperative and whether analytic philosophy merely defines the words we use to talk about philosophy. Luckily, this was not the case and we now have this book that expresses the most refined exposition of Rawls' views on justice to date. Attempting to address the criticisms leveled by Sandel, Walzer, Habermas, and others at his initial theory, Justice as Fairness integrates the concepts of "reasonable pluralism" and "stability for the right reasons" (the core concerns of Political Liberalism, although not in those words) articulated in articles scattered throughout journals over a span of three decades with the comprehensive philosophical doctrine in A Theory of Justice. Whether he succeeds in fully rebutting their objections is certainly up for debate, but Justice as Fairness should be essential reading for anybody interested in the philosophical underpinnings of a liberal, property-owning democracy.5-0 out of 5 stars Profound
Rawls set himself the difficult task of accomplishing for political philosophy what Kant attempted for moral philosophy; developing a systematic logical rationale for an intuitively attactive body of thought that raises this body of thought to new levels.Kant attempted to find a rational basis for the Pietist Christian ethics that he grew up with; Rawls attempts to find a rational basis for modern democratic polities. Both Kant and Rawls struggle not merely to rationalize existing arrangements and beliefs but to extract the best features of these intuitively attractive systems, to place these features on coherent and rational foundations, and to logically derive important new features of these systems from the described foundations.Rawls made this project his life's work. His output includes his magisterial 1971 book, A Theory of Justice, which set out most of the basis of his theory, the subsequent Political Liberalism, which introduced important qualifications into his scheme, and a large number of essays.Justice as Fairness is an attempt to summarize his views at the end of his remarkably productive career. This book is the best way available to enter Rawls's work in its final state.Having said that, I have to acknowledge some substantial drawbacks of Justice as Fairness.Rawls is not a gifted writer and this book derives to a large extent from lecture notes from one of his courses.Rawls has apparently been ill in recent years and this book was not completed by him. This is doubly unfortunate because Rawls's extended thoughts on some the issues discussed would be worth reading. The last couple of sections of the book are relatively sketchy, reflecting his inability to flesh them out.Since this book is an effort to abstract thousands of pages of prior writing, it is still rather dense.Still, because of the importance of Rawls's ideas, this book is very welcome and the reading public owes a debt of gratitude to Erin Kelly, the editor of this book.Read more

Everything in this book is too general to be of any practical value, especially if litigation is not your practice area.

In order to exapand my skill set I needed a book that gave me an overview of multiple areas of paralegal work.Sometimes I would get called for something they would say do you do estates wills and trusts or corporate derivatives? And while my experience may've lent to it, unless you've done something for years and years its hard to jump right into a conversation about it.Not so with this book at your fingertips.Gives you excellent outline of an assortment of areas.2-0 out of 5 stars Review of Paralegal Practice and Procedure: A Practical Guid
As an individual who was very new to the paralegal profession, I found that the book was only minimally beneficial in that many of the explanations and legal terms were not clearly defined or explained...It definitely left me feeling like I needed help from other sources... ... Read more
