3-0 out of 5 stars This is getting silly, guys
I think I made a mistake in recommending this guide over at BookThink - and have inadvertently been responsible for driving up the price to obscene levels. The truth: this guide is ok in that it provides (via price comparison) some knowledge of what's hot in the romance market and what's not.But it ain't $100 or more ok.It ain't even $10 ok.Shortly before we installed a purchase link on our website, I paid about $4 for a copy._That_ was ok.Barely.I urge you not to pay a king's ransom for this book.A few hours spent studying eBay closed auctions will net you more than this thing will, and your information will be up to date as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource!
This is the perfect type price guide, no baloney, no wasted words, just the author, title and price. Perfect for my needs, I hope they do other gendre's too. Not every author is included and some prices are different from the current internet prices but for the most part it is dead on. I found it extremely helpful. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The thorniest scientific problem of the eighteenth century was how to determine longitude. Many thousands of lives had been lost at sea over the centuries due to the inability to determine an east-west position. This is the engrossing story of the clockmaker, John "Longitude" Harrison, who solved the problem that Newton and Galileo had failed to conquer, yet claimed only half the promised rich reward. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I suggest this book to anyone interested in geography and history.
I chose this one because I thought it kind of related to me in a way, but I always thought it would be just a bunch of useless fact. As I read it, I became more and more interested in the struggle to 'find the longitude.' I suggest this book to anyone interested in geography and history. It's also an easy reader.
4-0 out of 5 stars An epic 40 year struggle!
Dava Sobel, like Simon Winchester or Canada's Pierre Berton, has clearly mastered the art of writing history in a form that is not only informative but, perhaps more important, is also compelling and entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for bibliophiles
Mr Battles's "Library" is not a study for scholars but for general readers who will be charmed by its old-fashioned character, by the elegant prose of its sentences and paragraphs and by its human portrait of libraries. The recording and transmission of knowledge from generation to generation is one of the greatest achievements of mankind and libraries play a crucial role in this process. And it is certainly disquieting to learn about the destruction of millions of books by the Nazis in the Louvain library or the siege of the Boston National and University Library but then Mr Battles reassures the reader by focussing on the building of outstanding collections and on the central role of libraries in every society. Who would have thought that the books in the infamous "model Jewish city" at the Theresienstadt concentration camp during the Final Solution "cast the ghetto reader into bibliopsychological relief"?
4-0 out of 5 stars Read the first chapter last!
It is an entertaining and educational book. I was very surprised when I learned that, in ancient times, any book brought to Alexandria was confiscated to be duplicated. I guess since the beginning of time knowledge is assumed to be power.
5-0 out of 5 stars At Last one Book about Books with a Clear Script...
Battle has written a book about libraries -so, about books put toguether and creating a new, chemical reaction- that has a non very common feature in this class of books: direction. Most of the books about books or related issues tends to be just catalogues of anecdotes, information, curiosities and sometimes even trivia. That's not bad. It can be very entertainning. But Battle has done more than that. With an excellent sense of style and elegance, -but also with a very hidden sense of humor titilating almost out of sight here and there- always sugestive and often very penetrating, he offer a clear vision not just of histories about libraries, but the History about relationships between the Library as institution and the ideas about it that have been developped in different phases of cultural history. The multifacetic substance of the library is presented, then, as never before and in no way just in the stratosphere of theory and speculation, but taking the reader to specific places and libraries, people and events, tragedies and personalities, bookmen and burning books-men.

This 'book' is a complete waste of people's money and time. It was written with absolutely no genuine insight into the subject matter but rather filled with cliches and nonsense. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Tale of a Time of Adventure, Lost Forever
I found this book absolutely fascinating as it described a time, only 70-odd years ago, when there truly were unexplored reaches, where legend and history still co-existed, and where a culturally sensitive and aware, and properly respectful traveler could find peaceful and fulfilling adventure. This book is even more interesting now, given the changes in the Middle East in the past ten years. Can one imagine making the same kind of journey in Yemen now?Of course not; it would almost be suicide. That time has long since been destroyed, everything about this book but its pure physical setting gone, so this memoir is even more poignant and compelling.
4-0 out of 5 stars existentialist trek through Hadhramaut
Trekking over the desolate, rocky plateau that lies between the coast and the interior valleys of Hadhramaut, Freya Stark travelled in 1935 with a group of Bedu and a government slave-soldier.The area has been known as Aden Protectorate, the Qu'aiti State of Shihr and Makalla, South Arabia, the People's Democratic Republic of South Yemen, and is now part of united Yemen. She visited several of the interior towns, almost never seen by Europeans at that time (though the RAF did maintain a presence), and has written beautiful descriptions of the unusual physical environment as well as a kind and sympathetic treatment of the people she met.She talked in Arabic with the ladies of the harim as well as with the rulers, scholars, and ordinary men of the communities.Stark aimed to travel to Shabwa, a long-lost ancient city much further in the interior of the Arabian peninsula, to an area then contested between Yemen and Saudi Arabia.Illness prevented her from doing so.This book then, is an account of her curtailed trip. She was evacuated by airplane from the interior, lucky to be alive.I always like travellers who respect the people they visit and who do not condescend.Freya Stark is certainly among them. For a travel book that describes a time long gone and a place still far from the beaten track-do you know many people who have been to Shibam, Makalla, Tarim, or al Qatn ?---you cannot do much better. You might use it as a guide as to how you could get along with people of a very different culture to your own---step number one, don't try to force them to adhere to your value system.5-0 out of 5 stars a woman adept at cross-cultural encounters
As a Christian worker in China, I had first-hand opportunity to see how we "foreigners" interacted cross-culturally. (Usually, the most successful of us were those who were not on a Mission from God.) Having seen people badly suited to live abroad and admiring those who were very able to do so, the joy of this book by Freya Stark was reading about a woman operating cross-culturally with a world-class ability to encounter persons with a much different backround than her own. Her sheer delight in her Bedouin companions is vicariously enjoyable.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars [Review and Reflections] The Scorpio Illusion "Morta toda Autoridad" Do you know who is working against you? Who can you trust?
Robert Ludlum's The Scorpio Illusion - A fast paced story of a woman obssessed with "Death to all authority", a very reluctant navy commander willing to help for a price, a secret organization helping with ulterior motives of its own. Amaya Bajaratt, the most notorious of terrorists out of the Baaka Valley, swore "Death to all Authority" as revenge for her lost childhood and her husband's death and she is known for accomplishing the impossible. Now intelligence agencies across four countries need to co-ordinate their efforts to find and stop her while time flies and people die... and they don't even have a picture of the woman. Commander Tyrell Hawthorne, one of the best there was, left the world of undercover and with the efforts of British and French Intelligence he is recruited to help. With the top ranks infilterated by "The Scorpions", Amaya is helped through different situations and assisted towards her goal -- none other than killing the President of United States of America. As the clock ticks towards D-day and people co-ordinating start dying, its a battle between brains and brawn.. leading to a nail biting conclusion. Robert Ludlum keeps you coming back for more.

1-0 out of 5 stars Laughably bad
This book deserves NO stars at all.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth reading
I read the Bourne books of his and one or 2 others and liked them very much. This book was SO unrealistic with unbelievably bad and inappropriate dialogue that I could barely finish it.

3-0 out of 5 stars good
This is a wacked memoir. O'Toole basically writes two parallel biographies, one of his childhood AND ONE OF ADOLPH HITLER'S adult life!!! Has this ever been done before? So you get to read about what O'Toole did and what Hitler was doing about the same time. It's amusing, and interesting. I did have trouble with some English slang. A weird book, I think. But I liked it. Peter O'Toole is my favorite actor. But I still think you'd enjoy it if you're not a big fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars The classic and the modern.
A charming book; somehow surprising, as the critics say too:'a new face of O'TOOLE': indeed, the tone of the story is a very warm one, with romantic overtones in the first part, without any trace of cynism or sophistication; therfore, it is contrary to his style maybe, or, a better word is to histype of characters he plays as an actor-usually being in a delicatepsychological or emotional status. PETER is creating his book like a sortof collage of memories, keeping coherently the time which gives it a sense,a direction, yet somehow not enough as he needs a second link: Hitler'simage(...). In the second part, still, a change of tone: more aggressivewhen it is about the war; a genuine atmosphere of the 40s, now inflashbacks in the 90s.Classic and modern at the same time as approaching, quite poetic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Genuine atmosphere of the late 40s.
THE images PETER O'TOOLE creates in our mind reading the book are curiously picturesque; they are quite alike with the air of the Italianneorealism in CINEMA, as we can make a connection with it. A tone quiecalm, epic, for the memories of his childhood, yet which becomes a bitagressive when he recalls that Adolf Hitler existed. A puzzle of thoughtsnarrative and expressionist at the same time, and surprisingly modern. ... Read more
