5-0 out of 5 stars a must for secondary and post-secondary students
The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, Sixth Editions is a must for anyone who is attending secondary or post-secondary school, because it shows them how to properly cite their sources when writing a research paper. It show them how to create a bibliograhy and works cited page for just about any kind of source that they are using, whether it is a book, scientfic journal, newspaper, magazine article, or online source.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Book for College Students
I have used this book extensively since I began my Master's degree program, and I have been very pleased with both the content and simplicity of use.Having been out of school for several years, I found myself confused as to how to correctly cite various types of media for a bibliography, but this great book is loaded with examples of how to correctly cite any type of media.
5-0 out of 5 stars MLA Handbook: The Savior of College Students
The MLA Handbook is the most useful writing instruction manual available. The handbook's straight-forward English and clear-cut presentation of its contents, will make writing research papers, formal letters and yes, citations, a smooth and swift task.College freshmen and sophomores will be sharpened and formed into skilled and knowledgeable writers. And their anxieties will be consumed by a confidence that no longer fears those dreadful words "research paper."But this does not mean that you should sell it back after you meet your requisites! The MLA handbook is a not something you discard like those odious textbooks that are reprinted and updated every semester. It is a trustworthy handbook there for your literary refinement, always. The MLA handbook should be issued to all incoming students at orientation. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars What Are Your Retirement Goals?
It isn't easy to write a book about retirement that speaks to all age groups, from college grads to Baby Boomers to retirees, but Lee Eisenberg has done it. The Number isn't as much about financial planning as it is about asking readers to reflect on what is important to them and how they should go about reaching their goals. He is looking at the issue of retirement security from a psychological/philosophical perspective. It is filled with interesting stories that will inspire twenty-somethings to get smart about money at an early age and Boomers to stop procrastinating and/or guessing at their Number while they still have time to make a difference. As an attorney/CPA with an active retirement andestate planning practice, I see many clients who have no idea how to even begin estimating how much they will need when they retire. And I think for many of them retirement looms as an intimidating unknown. It's great that a book like The Number is out there to help them figure out what steps they can take now to get on the path to a more secure future. I give this book a solid four stars and not five only because my CPA training kept me yearning for more quantitative analysis.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not For Commoners!
I read this book in the hopes of gaining a helpful framework for thinking about - and perhaps even achieving - my "number" for retirement, but that is not what I found between its covers.Mostly the book concerns itself with the soul - searching and anguish that people who have 1 - 10 million dollar "nest eggs" go through in trying to decide if its enough to support them in the manner to which they have become accustomed, until such time as they pass on.Although I really FEEL for these people, my financial situation is much more in sync with the run-of-the-mill American, and for us Mr. Eisenberg has barely a mention, let alone advice. On a positive note, I did find his writing style to be very engaging. Bottom line - I would have to recommend that you avoid this book and use the time saved to read something more useful and/or fun.

2-0 out of 5 stars There is no number, only a lot of assumptions and risks
"The number" poses an interesting question but provides no helpful answers. A four percent draw on invested assets is as much an old wives' tale as a piece of scientific wisdom, even if it is a number. Eisenberg's number is the inverse of that draw down, or twenty-five times.... well, there's the rub, twenty-five times what? income? expenses? income less savings? projected discretionary spending? Post-mortgage payoff and college tuition expenses? The proverbial bottom line is clouded by conversations with an eclectic collection of consultants, experts, philosophers, and casual acquaintances. Eisenberg, a former Esquire editor and short-timer with Lands End, ruminates about a simple question: How much money do you need to feel secure? The problem is that security comes in multiple forms: happiness, comfort, excess consumption, ego. And the accuracy and stability of those measures and outcomes is compounded by key assumptions about how long you will live and how healthy those years will be. Constructing a one-year budget is hard enough. Constructing a thirty-year budget is nearly impossible.

2-0 out of 5 stars NKJV is Great , Words are too Large!
The book is concordance and reference materials in this book are great and helpful. My problem is that the text is too large and crowded on the pages making it difficult to read and look up versus. Started giving me a headache after awhile. I would like to recommend the regular Nelson NKJV Reference bible. Its will be easier to read. Another great bible, the one I like the best, is the Nelsons SLIMLINE bible. Perfect to take to church because its smaller and lighter but the words are still large enough to read on a regular basis. I have the genuine leather edition and bought it on amazon and just LOVE it! Hope this helped.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for those who need large print
I am a college student who would mostly prefer large print to the standard normal font found in most books - including textbooks - and when I first looked inside this book, I found the print very easy for me to read. Thanks!

1-0 out of 5 stars OK for kids
This book is a large print dictionary and laid out very nicely but if you are an educated adult then dont buy this book! This is a small dictionary and most of the words in this book you probably would not need to look up. this was a total waste of money~ May be good to give to an elementary level child!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent general use Bible
This review is on Nelson's Reference Edition of the King James translation of the Holy Bible. Without engaging in argument over whether the newer translations of the bible are "perversions", I will just pose that I prefer the original King James Version since it is what I grew up learning with. Many bits and pieces of scripture that are in my personal memory are in King James. Therefore, when attempting to locate a reference using a concordance or electronic bible search, it is always convenient to resort to that version which matches one's word-for-word recollection. I agree that the stilted Shakespearean English can be a bit cumbersome, but this tends to become less bothersome with familiarity.
4-0 out of 5 stars Binding split; replaced under warranty; very pleased
I have been very pleased with this Bible. The NKJV is my favorite version, since it is based on the same Greek text as the KJV, the Textus Receptus (TR). I really like that the center-column lists all the places in which the similar Majority Text or the less-similar Critical Text (on which most modern versions are based) deviates from the TR. The two-column print is dark and easy to read, with the pages thick enough to have minimal bleed-through. I also really like the four-page preface which explains the translation philosophy and the underlying Hebrew and Greek texts used. As another reviewer has noted, the durability is questionable. I bought mine in January 2001 and a few months ago I noticed that there is a split from top to bottom right in front of the preface. Fortunately, the box says that Nelson offers a lifetime guarantee against failures due to manufacturing defects, so I have just contacted them via their website to see if they will make that good. 29 April 2005.
1-0 out of 5 stars Another Shlocky Item from Thomas Nelson
Up until approximately ten years ago, Nelson Bibles were quality, and I am referring to their Leather-bound editions. They were Smyth-sewn/whipstitched, and would last for years. Unfortunately, except for their "Signature Series" Bibles, which are priced at $99 and more, Nelson (and Crossway) Bibles, in my opinion, are the most inferior on todays market. They are all glue-bound, and have a limited life-expectancy. This is a prime example of it. The New King James translation is an excellent translation. Unfortunately, it is Nelson's house translation, and they charge unreal royalties to any other publishing house who wishes to use it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing to get excited about
Susan Orlean, notable to most as a writer for The New Yorker, became the literary "It" girl in 2003 with the help of the movie "Adaptation" (the movie based on her book The Orchid Thief). In an attempt to capitalize on that book, "Bullfighter..." was released.
2-0 out of 5 stars vastly overrated
Look at the cover of this book and you'll see who and what it's really about. It's all about SO; her subject matter is irrelevant both to her and, consequently, to the reader.Worse, even her style, which seems to sucker in a lot of poeple, is not exactly her own.If you want to read what she's read, and cribbed from, track down a copy of Mr. Personality, by Mark Singer, also a New Yorker writer but a far finer one.Really, I don't see how SO can pass MS in the NYer's hallways and not hide her head in shame.Singer is by far the more human writer. He reserves his style for his short Talk of the Town pieces, drifting it to the side for his longer, more important pices.Unlike SO, he knows when to take it down a notch in order to add some real heart and feeling to his writing.SO's stuff, from one story to the next, is stylistically the same beginning to end.Half.com often has copies of Singer's book. When you find it, be sure to check out what's on the cover; it ain't a picture of Singer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Non-fiction at its finest
Like her predecessor Joan Didion, Susan Orlean writes of the wide range of human experience--from a traveling gospel group in the South to a budding basketball star--and in doing so presents a portrait of America that is both comprehensive and engaging. What's even better is that she does it without ever being sentimental.Read more

Editorial Review

General Powell may have undertaken this book as a form of paid political test marketing, but it turns out to be a success of an altogether different kind. We don't learn from this book if Powell is presidential material, but his recounting of the various steps of his career give us an unrivaled view of the ins and outs of military bureaucracy and shows how the modern American military, with its consistent emphasis on can-do attitudes and actual results, is a much more congenial place for realizing one's talents than our still-alarmingly pigeonholing general society. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars thought for the day
I read this sometime after Powell had already become Secretary of State, but before 9/11. At the time I read the book, I thought differently about politics than I do now, and this book had a subtle, but important effect on that change in perspective. It was among the factors that served a deepening in me. I have become less reactive and superficial when it comes to politics. That deepening was served not so much by virtue of what Powell says in this book -- although he does make a number of concrete points which were enlightening to me. It was more as a result of the fact that although he must have written it because he was toying with a bid for the presidency, I sense that he represents himself here pretty faithfully. I could therefore incorporate that feeling about him into my understanding of subsequent events.
5-0 out of 5 stars There must be something about Colin Powell...
There must be something about Colin Powell. All through his career his superiors continually sought him out; and wherever he worked they always wanted him back.
5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational book
I enjoyed reading "My American Journey" and was thrilled that Colin Powell wrote an excellent, candid and honest autobiography and resisted the temptation to be self-serving. General Colin Powell achieved his remarkable success through merit and despite the various obstacles (which he saw as challenges) such as racism that could have thwarted lessor people.
