While the basic content of the book remains the same, the hardback form makes it much more durable, and the white pages (as opposed to beige in the paperback) make it easier to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful!
I just finished the book two days ago. I am running a student led organization this school year and felt very uneasy about parliamentary procedure. This book helped me solidify my knowledge of it and gave me confidence. It was easy to read and had very useful examples.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction
If you love meetings, then don't buy this book. If you don't like meetings, find them boring, intimidating, or incomprehensible; then definitely buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Clearest and Most Useful Book on HLM for Longitudinal Studies
This is simply the best book for those analyzing longitudinal data (data measured at more than one time point).Singer's coverage of Hierarchical Linear MOdeling (HLM) is clear, well-written (sprinkled with humor, it's like a lecture by the most popular prof. at your school), and geared towards researchers who need their programs to run, not just learn the mathematical underpinnings. Singer and Willett (the coauthor, not listed above!) set the standard for presenting math/statistics book examples.
5-0 out of 5 stars Breaking down complex analyses
This is an excellent book. Multilevel modeling and survival analysis are becoming increasingly important in psychological studies, but are pretty complicated procedures. Singer & Willet offer both a conceptual background and practical ways to do the analyses in a clear, understandable manner. The book is very readable and will be an important reference for future analyses!

5-0 out of 5 stars very clear and thorough
This book does a particularly good job of explaining the substantive meaning of the equations involved in multilevel modeling analyses. It spends a lot of extra time explaining what the equations mean in real world terms using examples from actual data sets.I teach a graduate level course on HLM and I much prefer this book to the Raudenbush & Byrk book because it not only does a better job of explaining the math (for graduate students less comfortable with statistics) but the chapters are also sprinkled with incredibly useful advice on actually running the analyses (getting them to converge, interpreting them, etc.)The Raudenbush & Bryk book probably does a slightly better job of presenting the equations, but it falls short on explanation and practical advice. If you were only going to buy one HLM book, I would start with this one. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A dissenting opinion
First, I want to say that I have NOT read this book;I have some commentsbased on its table of contents.I teach research methods in education, andhave served on over a hundred dissertation committees in education andother fields (including several dissertations in psychology), and I wouldnot use or recommend this book primarily because of its extremely limitedtreatment of qualitative research.Despite the book cover's claim that thebook deals with "the entire range of research methodologies inpsychology", the coverage of qualitative methods appears to be limitedto one chapter on naturalistic and case-study methods.(A second chapterwhich deals with field research in fact seems to focus onquasi-experimental and single-subject designs, which are not qualitative.) The rest of the book is heavily quantitative/experimental in its approach(there are three chapters on experimental design alone). It seemsrevealing that although there are sections on the limitations ofnaturalistic and case study research and correlational and differentialresearch, there is no explicit section on the limitations of experimentalresearch. There is also no discussion of one of the most commonqualitative approaches used in psychology--the qualitative interview study, which is different from a "case study".(For more on thisapproach, I recommend "Learning from Strangers:The Art and Method ofQualitative Interview Studies", by the psychologist RobertWeiss.)5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent text with great web + cd support
I decided to adopt this text for my course as it is comprehensive, up-to-date, and includes a wealth of supplementary materials that are web-based, as well as available on the accompanying CD.Recommended highlyfor undergrad AND graduate students.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good baseline book for those preparing for a dissertation
As a Ph.D. student that is about to start my dissertation I found thisbook extremely helpful in wading through the various research and analysismethods.Filled with examples (although principally focused onPsychology), the book has helped me plan my dissertation.A greatreference book and in my opinion a must have for those who are about tostart their dissertation. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars If you already know a bit of both...
... this dictionary of English and Spanish words is a good one to have. It's small, can be carried with you, and is great for quick look ups when you are stuck on a word. If you don't know a bit of Spanish already, though, you really won't benefit from the book all that much.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fun (yes, fun) Grammar Text
Students and teachers dread grammar. Diagramming sentences and misplaced modifiers can spell ruin to a person seeking good grammar. Woe is I avoids those terms and brings grammar back to real English-speakers. This book is good because it not only explains common grammar errors that everyday people make when speaking, but it explains them well and clearly, so that people are not bogged down by complicated rules. And the humor and simplicity makes reading Woe is I enjoyable, and trust me, you'll like grammar more after reading it, but you won't become a grammar nerd who bugs people and tells them not to end a sentence with a preposition. You'll stay the same, but with better grammar.

5-0 out of 5 stars It deserves more than 5 stars!
Excellent & indispensable. Easy to read, to understand, to remember. Regardless of what you write or your level of expertise, I guarantee you'll learn something.
5-0 out of 5 stars a very helpfulbook
We can't assume that, just because we use spell check on the computer, we are writing properly. It seems as though nowadays every word ending in an "s" calls for an apostrophe. It is a matter of choice as to whether the apostrophe comes before or after the "s".Menus, signs, and classified ads always feature creative writing, punctuation and spelling.Every edition of the local newspaper is riddled with grammatical errors. I want my writing to say something better about me.I didn't learn to diagram sentences in high school, so I need some extra help to make sure I am communicating effectively and not showing my ignorance any more than necessary. If you find yourself re-writing sentences because you are not sure about your grammar, this is just the book for you. When I read the book I found several areas where my language use was just not up to par."Woe Is I" is short enough and has enough flow that you can read it straight through. Then, when you are in the midst of writing, you can refer back to troublesome areas until you become accustomed to using better English.I keep it right beside the computer at work. Then, if I need help figuring out if I should use "its" or if "it's" is proper, I can quickly double check. "Woe Is I" is a really helpful and portable little book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars This Dictionary was published in 2002 NOT 2005
I bought this dictionary because of Random House's reputation AND because RH stated this 2005 edition is the most up-to-date reference work. This claim is one of several claims verified to be false. A RH staffer verified that this dictionary was published in 2002. The edition they sell now is the same exact book (republished/not re-edited in 2005).The next claim states that the front section of the book contains "NEW" words NOT listed in the main section nor introduced in previous edition. This claim is also false. "Agent", for example, is found in the "new words section" AND the main section. In addition, "agent" is not a new word at all. What's it doing in this new word section?A word such as "blog" (web log) should have been included in this new section. Since this dictionary is really from 2002, it is understandable - in hindsight - why it's not listed. This word was not used much, if at all, in 2002. It was easily recognized, however, in 2005.I would NOT have purchased this dictionary if I knew it was from 2002 NOT from 2005. I'm very disappointed at being defrauded.

3-0 out of 5 stars No qualms about the content, but...
I am trying to replace a previously "standard" edition of this dictionary - nice strong white paper and cloth bound - this edition is in a cheap paper cover and grayish newsprint-like paper. What used to be a $65 dollar execution is now apparently only available in a $ 130 de luxe version.

4-0 out of 5 stars review of the Random House Webster's Unabridged Dictionary 2005 version
The jacket, binding, and cover are of nice quality. The pages are grayish in color which makes the pages easy to look at while under bright lights, but they are thin and quite fragile with regard to tearing. This dictionary is quite large and heavy compared to "college" dictionaries. The content of the dictionary is superb. There are many pictures to go along with the definitions, there is a "new words" section, many of the definitions have examples of uses for the words. The definitions are impressive and clear. I am pleased with this dictionary. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very instructive
All the sample essays are great. But their structures, I think, are elusive. The essayists are too professional to choose a college-style method of writing and I had a very difficult time figuring out the elements of those essays. They scatter randomly in the articles and contradict what Alfred Rosa and Paul Eschholz teach us.
4-0 out of 5 stars solid basic writing text
I use this book to teach a beginning writing class. The variety of essays is quite good; not every one is a winner, but probably 60% are accessible and there are some rarities here that the students have thoroughly enjoyed, including "Dumpster Diving" by Lars Eighner and "A Crime of Compassion" by Barbara Huttmann. There are enough writers the likes of Dillard, MLK, Ackerman, and Orwell to acquaint novices with great writing, balanced with a good variety of more pop-oriented magazine style pieces. The strategies and guidelines for essays are excellent, and a wealth of possible topics for further development is offered throughout. My class prep time is easy and concise thanks to the book's structure and execution. ... Read more

Skillfully done, research can be the solid cornerstone of your term paper (or dissertation, essay, or article); inadequately executed, it can cause your whole project to crumble and fall. 3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Useful...
I am a master's student just beginning graduate studies in the humanities.I picked up this book during my first semester and devoured it over the course of a few days (my undergraduate degree is in mathematics, so I figured I was a little behind the curve in my present area). It's the kind of book I think I will return to occasionally throughout my studies. There's some useful stuff here, but the main point of the book is "make sure you make a good argument!"That's really what it boils down to.As someone with a solid background in logic, however, I found much of the book to be reducible to basic principles of common sense. There's a section on "warrants" for example that sounds very sophisticated and difficult, but is really just an exercise in constructing a logical argument by using universally accepted propositions. Now this is fine, but I think the material could be presented in a much simpler manner.Instead of using large tables and graphics with arrows and textboxes and all that jazz, the authors could have taken a more minimalist route and avoided a lot of confusion. I don't know... maybe I would have just preferred a different format. Some of the things in the book really bug me.For example, chapter seven introduces the ideas of claim, warrants, reason, and evidence. To put it simply, you base claims on reasons.Evidence is the cold hard reality upon which the reasoning process rests.Warrants are like propositions which connect reasons to claims in the way antecedents are connected to consequents. If your warrant is something like A=>B then your reasons will need to coincide with A and your claims with B (if your warrant is going to successfully connect reasons to claims). If your claim is more specific than B then your warrant isn't strong enough (and your claim is unjustifiably strong). If your reason is broader than A then your claim won't necessarily follow because your not sticking to the limits of the proposition. This kind of stuff is very basic logical reasoning which everyone is familiar with.So why do the authors say "as we said, this is not easy stuff."Maybe it's not easy because the presentation is muddled. It could have been simplified by taking a more symbolic route (perhaps in addition to, or as a a preliminary, what is already here).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Craft of Research
Excellent way to learn the steps required to write an quality research paper.Learning the proper way to do reseach will remove stress and make writing fun.I am a 1 year MBA student at WSU but I wish I learned these techniques in high school. The next edition should have examples and resources for business students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Notes from an English Instructor
The Craft of Research is an excellent guide for students of all ages and levels.I teach Freshman Composition, and I am using it this year as a basis of lectures in my Research Class.I am considering requiring my students to buy it next year. The book is not written as a textbook, but as a guide that individual students could read and use.The language is straight forward and easy to follow. The authors, English professors, take students through the research process, step by step.I highly recommend this book for anyone from high school seniors through graduate school, especially for those who are a few years removed from Freshman Comp. ... It is a very good guide for anyone, intresting in applying to Law school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I really liked the no-nonsense advice in this book. Anna Ivey gives you straight up advice on how to get into your safety schools and how to tip the scales in your favor on the schools where you have a 50-50 chance of yes or no. There are some good sample essays in the back of the book that are helpful in crafting your own statement, as well as some bad ones that show you what to avoid. Helpful section on financial aid. If you only buy one book regarding the law school admissions process, The Ivey Guide should be regarded as a great primer to answer all of your questions (whether you are a recent grad or an older returning student, the over represented majority or a URM.) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Assessment Book I've Seen
I bought this for an ESL Assessment class at the graduate level. I also teach ESL at a university, and this book comes in very handy, both in theory and in practice. I especially like the rubrics you give to students so they can assess their own strengths and weaknesses. For example, when working together in groups, students fill out a form after their work is done, stating how well they listened, asked for clarification, or offered/asked for opinions. I continue to use this book long after I've taken the class, and I believe this is the best assessment book out there. Don't waste your time (or money) on books like "ESL Assessment: On the Yellow Big Road to the Withered of Oz" (or whatever the title of that book is!)
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I have just completed a graduate course in Assessment for teachers of ELLs.Almost all of the students in this class, including me, found this book to be a very valuable resource. Some of the information is redundant, but for a teacher looking for ideas on how to construct an authentic assessment of student work (reading, writing, speaking or listening) it is full of great insights and models that can be copied from the book or revised for individual use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic text for ESL/TESOL course on Assessment
This book is incredibly helpful for ESL / TESL / ESOL / TESOL teachers and home schoolers as well. It was a textbook in a required Assessment course, but it is so helpful and practical that it will be very useful even if you're not taking a formal course. It presents detailed advice and examples for portfolio assessment, as well as the largest assortment of rubrics that I have seen anywhere. When you use Authentic Assessment to balance your Standardized Tests, you get a more balanced picture of the student's strengths and weaknesses, so you can tailor your instruction to the need. ...
