Out of date!
The book is very useful & accurate for citing books and other print articles, but has no information on citing web pages, emails, or other electronic texts. It is based on the 1995 4th edition of MLA, while MLA is up to the 6th edition (2003)

Beware "Ways of Brainwashing" student turned teacher
The essays in this book aren't particularly enlightening; however, they are often misused not to start debate or critical thinking, but rather to show students "what they SHOULD learn and feel about the topics."I didn't like any of the essays in this book because they didn't tell me anything I didn't already know.I am already the product of a democratic, public education.Thus, I am tolerant and accepting of others' views and opinions.I don't need tolerance beaten into me over the course of a semester.This book should only be used for the formerly home-schooled and religious right, as it will only open worlds for them.
From a Teacher
I have used this book to teach a freshman writing and reading course at a liberal arts school.Because of the difficulty of many of the texts, it was met by my students with little fanfare.While a few of the pieces are clearly too much for the average freshman (Foucault comes first to mind), most can be used effectively to get them to discuss issues.I have found that the students would rather talk in generals and universals than with the intricate arguments that some of the writers brilliantly present. I had to read this book for my upper division journalism class this fall and found it to be one of the best books that we used in the course.The editors have tried to collect well-written, intelligent documentaries that challenge traditional connections between words and photographs.Read more

Military ripoff
If youspent 20 years on active duty, this book is accurate, but you got all of this information when you left the military.If you had combined active duty and reserve/Guard or just reserve/guard experience, this book is misleading at best and just plain inaccurate at worse.Unless you were injured on active duty, there are very few benefits for the reserve/guard until you hit age 60, which the book fails to tell you.Sure, you get to shop in the high-priced Exchanges and Commissaries if you live close to them, and there is a slim possibility of Space Available travel, but the inconvenience makes going commercial, even with security at the commercial airports, easier.
Great if you're active duty or a potential recruit
I was somewhat disappointed by this book. A veteran of three military services (but not retired), I had hoped to find some information about Veterans' programs. Instead, I found about 90% of the book to be useful only for currently-serving personnel or young men contemplating a military career. For those individuals, this book is great. For those not currently serving, I found it lackluster and loaded with information any military man could find on base with little trouble. Would I recommend this book? Not really. Would I recommend the military as a career to most young men? Absolutely. Save your money. Enlist and talk with the on-base career advisors instead for much more current information.

A wealth of information
Finally, I was required to a buy a book that I will actually use again.Both pre-student and veteren teachers will enjoy this book.It contains a wealth of strategies for teaching kids how to write. You need this book
This book is a must-have for anyone writing a college level or above paper.I've found that it's better used as a reference, not as the kind type of book you sit down and read.One warning, it is a manual, so it's pretty dry - dry, but necessary.

This book is the Bible for Historians!
I was instructed by several of my past professors that this book would be the guiding light in regards to submitting & creating scholarly materials in my academic writing matriculation.They were right, this book regardless of its many editions has been in my possession for the last 6-7 years.Academians of all concentrations when it comes down to the publishing of Termpapers, Thesis, or Dissertations, you really cannot go wrong with this Chicago-style format.This book made assessing materials, writing papers, citations, proper documentation, and even grading essay papers as a college instructor an enjoyable experience.However, as a undergraduate and graduate student I was introduced to this bible.Now I am entertaining the idea of future editing. Love it, so I have to buy it...
I'm currently facing the end of my first year teaching, and I'm already looking forward to the new beginnings of next year.As a "newbie", I picked this book up from my school's professional library and fell in love with its conversational writing style and practical ideas.Frustrated by the fact that I can't write in the school's copy, I'm now buying my own.You should too.

Great book for new teachers!
This is a very great, practical, realistic book.It is a very easy read, and is only 120 pages total.If you already know alot about reading comprehension, it is nothing earth-shattering, and you may only pick up a few things from it.But, if you are a relatively new teacher, this book could help you significantly.Tovani's writing is very simple, easy to follow, and straightforward, and you can tell she is still a classroom teacher and not some out-of-touch researcher, since all her tips are very practical.Even if you already know alot about comprehension, this book will probably give you a few new things to think about, and it can easily be read in one weekend.It will not be a waste of your money!!

Most Helpful Book on Graphic Design!
This book is loaded with valuable (clearly stated) information and outstanding illustrations to demonstrate successful creative thinking and targeted solutions.

Very cool addition to my personal library
I read the 3rd edition of this book and found it to be incredibly helpful in explaining the different applications, how to create them and what their purposes are in the vis com field. Without this book, my understanding would not have been as keen. What I especially like is that so many of the designers included in this book are also the ones who win awards in the design competitions- very cool addition to my personal library.

Thorough and engaging
This book is used as a course text in many design classes across the country. I can see why. Not so much a history as it is a survey of the current state of graphic design, it's quite possibly the best treatment I've ever read on the subject in a single volume. The 3rd edition is significantly expanded in content and reformatted versus the 2nd, and the illustrative examples are abundant and well-chosen. Many of the examples are accompanied by remarks from the designers themselves, which helps shed light on the concepts and thought processes behind the work. The text strikes a good balance between commentary and pedagogy, and as a result the book works for both instructional reference and casual reading. The end of each chapter contains related exercises designed to prod your right brain into action. Terrible for Beginners (No me gusta)
If you have a choice, do not buy this book.If you must buy it for your class, seriously consider taking a different Spanish class that doesn't use this book.
A LONG WAIT FOR PRODUCT
I ordered this product on the 3rd of August via expedited (2 day)shipping and it did not get here until the 13th of August!!Class started here on the 15th. The product itself was as it stated, so I can not complain about that.I would not use this shipper unless you have plenty of time to wait.

Unhappy
I was looking for a student workbook for practice in spanish.I ordered this book because it was listed as "like new",it took me almost three weeks to get it and when I did I found the worksheets for the first five chapters were cut out.I am now approaching my first term exam for those same chapters and have no book to review. ... A Great Learning Guide
This is a great book to buy if you want to learn ASL. Not only do you learn basic vocabulary but this book also teaches sentence structure for ASL. It's a fantasic way to learn how to communicate with those in Deaf culture.

Basic ASL
A great resource and one that I feel as though I will keep for a long time. The spiral binding makes it easy to use and to keep handy to look up words. I have one criticism...the vocabulary pages follow the practice pages which is backwards. Since I used this text for a class, the instructor always presented the vocab first, so it would have been nice to have the book set up that way as well. That being said, was well worth the price!

Great contents, but
Bid a new set from ebay and it arrived in two boxes. It has great contents, but:
Finest compilation of the writings of the most brilliant minds over the centuries past ever
These books were first published in 1952.Only 500 sets were published that year, a Private Library Collection it was called, and sold for $500.00 per set.My father was one of the original purchasers, and he passed them down to me when he died.(It's still even in its original custom made bookcase!)
Cost effective when you consider your options...
Regardless of minor squabbling over what should and shouldn't be included, this is a very good collection of western works. I'd call it great in fact, when you consider the amount you'd have to pay to purchase all these seperate, not to mention all the wading you'd do through some not-so-necessary reads.

Understanding and Using English Grammar (Third Edition)
I have used this outstanding book with international students for several years, but it would be helpful if the Answer Key were available from Amazon.

Grammar is difficult
With this book is it possible to learn the english grammar.
Clear and easily understandable
The geniuses that controlled my education decided that I should skip fourth grade reading because they caught me reading Mark Twain in third grade. I can't imagine what in the WORLD they were thinking, as I came to learn years later that in fourth grade reading they taught - you guessed it - grammar! And boy, did I suffer. My written grammar was absolutely horrendous for years, and even though I continued to be placed in advanced or honors English classes throughout high school, whenever my papers were returned to me the "concept" side came back with an A, and the "grammar" side came back with a D or an F.Read more

Loved it
This book is a great follow up to Little Green Book.There are 74 hands from real life play that Phil explains in detail so that you can learn while the situation unfolds.I like how Phil reduces the hands to their basic fundamentals and reinforces those key lessons in each hand - I think taking the complexity out of certain situations is key to success in real play, especially when there are so many emotional and maybe physical stresses on a players concentration once they are in the live situation.I have found myself facing many of the same situations that are in this book, and it was insightful and sometimes reassuring to see how a real professional handles the same hand.Overall a great addition to my poker literature.

"A bit shallow compared to other books on prayer..."
I can't add much to previous reviews except to say that if you're looking for a solid, detailed instruction on how to pray effectively, this may not be it.
Worst interpretation ever
I read this book years ago.My first impression was, "this seems like a lot to pull from such a small passage."I really felt that there was something wrong with it. A few months later, I read a textbook on Biblical Interpretation, and suddenly I could articulate what bothered me so much about this book.
There needs to be a Zero star rating for books like this
I wonder what Bruce Wilkinson was thinking when he wrote this book. There is no way a top-notch theologian could squeeze 96 pages out of one verse and keep it focused solely on Scripture. Well, Wilkinson wrote that much, but he threw in so many examples from life that it totally took away the meaning of the verse.

I'm not sure why the publish date is listed as Jan. 1, 1992.The cover clearly shows the publish date as October, 1970.
Um, You Don't Have To Pay For This.
This, like many other military manuals, is available online.Just type the FM number into your search box and a list of links to it will magically appear.

A true disappointment.
This book is very disappointing. Poorly written and with weak descriptions leaves the inexperienced outdoorsmen with a false sense of security. Just because there happens to be a section on a particular skill does not translate into the ability of the reader to follow the lousy instructions to complete said skill. If anyone wants to learn survival skills they would be well suited to take a course and view first-hand the execution of the skills by an experienced practitioner of them. Wonderful Reference Book

Better With Behind the Wheel French Revised
Henry S. Raymond's Learn in Your Car French is clearly and indisputably one of the best 'bang for your buck'car French courses on the market.
Good Purchase
I have taken a few French classes and this was a fun easy refresher to teach and go over the basics in spoken French language.It also helps refine pronunciation and was exactly what I was looking for.It might be a little challenging for someone with no experience at all in the language.

The First 3 CDs Helped Tremendously!
I had to go to Paris for a conference and didn't know the first bit of French other than "Bon jour!" and "Oui." I searched through many options and, after reading all the reviews, decided on French Complete. I spent two months (about 3-4 hours per week) listening to the first 3 CDs (Level 1) over and over and over again in the car. By the time I left for my trip, I was surprisingly comfortable with basic French conversation. I was confident I would be just fine. Read more

searching for all the words
Even with the invention of the internet, every house should have a dictionary.There's a couple books everyone should have, and the dictionary is one of them.The Merriam-Webster Dictionary is small enough to fit inside a small cabinet, but big enough to find most of the words you want to search for.
This is the one I always seem to reach for first..........
I have a old hard cover Webster's collegiate dictionary that my parents gave me before I went to college sitting under my bed.I also have a huge 2 volume Oxford Shorter English dictionary gathering dust in my closet.I even have a unabridged Random House dictionary on the very computer I am writing this review on.I use all of the above occasionally, but the one I use the most is this little paperback dictionary that sits on my desk beside my bed.It usually has what I'm looking for and I rarely have to use one of the bigger dictionaries.The size is nice and it is light weignt so it is easy to carry around if you have to.If you need a small desk dictionary this is a good one.

What can I say about the book? The M-W Dictionary is a widely used tool book and especially useful for preparing GRE. So I gave these 3 stars to the book.

Great beginner book
I used Alif Baa (with DVDs) in Arabic 101 at the University of Maryland (Baltimore County) and it's probably the best beginner book I have encountered.The DVDs are great and add a lot to the text and exercises.It even shows a chart with the letters, and you can click on the appropriate character to hear and show someone pronouncing it in several different voices.Great idea.Lots of exercises to listen to and write down.And, for $5, there's an answer key to Alif Baa which will help an awful lot if you want to teach yourself.

Good starter book for Arabic
I've taken Spanish and Russian, so I'm no stranger to learning a new language. I have had some rudimentary Arabic that was based on phonetics, so I never really learned the letters. This book drills in each letter with repetition, so you write each letter multiple times, and utilize it in words so you know the initial, medial, and final positions. The book isn't perfect, and without a solution manual you are in the dark as to whether you are getting the dictation down right. I would receommend either taking an Arabic class (as I am doing) that uses this book or buying the solutions manual to go it alone. As my instructor states, this book and Al Kitaab #1 are the foundation, if you can make it through these books you are on your way, but it isn't easy. If I had to do this on my own, I would be taking longer, but the intense schedule of the class is keeping the words and letters fresh in my brain. Bottom line, if you are buying this for school, it's good to go. If you are buying it to go it alone, get the solution manual.

A fabulous series
This book is such an improvement over what was the previous standard:the Orange Book from Michigan.It is not too technical and comes with nicely done DVDs.This and the companion 'Al-Kitab' are elementary and intermediate courses together.There is also an answer key (separate purchase) which I would recommend.
