5-0 out of 5 stars A Labor of Love and Beauty
The New York Times recently ran a glowing front page story on this work, with almost a page more inside. Having received my copy, it is easy to see why. The book is beautifully produced. A sturdy orange and black hardcover protects 263 pages, each 16 inches long by 10 and a half inches high. This is a big book. The work was begun in 1964 by Harold Newman, an well-known and highly regarded attorney in Connecticut who died in 1993 at the age of 93. His son, Jon O. Newman, then took the book up and finished in it 2002. Jon Newman is one of the greatest jurists of our times, serving on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. His reputation for brilliance and attention to detail are legendary, and are well-reflected in this work. Given that Judge Newman's father hand-lettered the copious charts on large cardboard sheets, the statement in the Preface that "appropriately for a work of genealogy, this has been a father-son project" hits the mark.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Readable Account of Imperial Russia's Rulers
W. Bruce Lincoln's history of the 300 years of Romanov rule in Russia (1613-1917) is easily his most readable account of Russian history. While Professor Lincoln's research is meticulous as ever, in this volume he has to cover far more ground than in his other more focused histories and thus he avoids some of the digressions that he normally might allow himself. The result is a superb one-volume history of the Tsars and Tsarinas who determined Russia's development from a minor principality into the largest empire on earth.5-0 out of 5 stars Read It!
A genuinely great book.Lincoln certainly could write, and make5-0 out of 5 stars The best there is....
Mr. Lincolm, unlike Robert Massie who wrote "Peter the Great," left me with the clear impression that he understood the source material he had at hand, and was able to verify through corroboration every thing he said. Some of the more incredible stories, or speculative rumors are left out. This does not make his work any less enjoyable, but it does lend Mr. Lincoln's work a feeling of solid thoroughness in its research--something that is lacking in Massie's book.If a story was left out, I felt quite confident that Mr. Lincoln knew of the story, but could not corroborate it to his satisfaction.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good topic - misleading title
The approach of linking the great French (and subsequently English) family of Plantagenet of the early modern world to their contemporary American descendants, is a good one. Perhaps more space might have been devoted to contemporary Plantagenet family members in the direct male line as these do exist today (despite the best efforts of Henry VIII, scion of the dancing wardrobe master Owen Tudor). The Beaufort family of England or the de Warren family of France are conspicuous examples. It should also be noted that William the Conquerer was in no shape or form a Plantagenet. On the contrary, the Dukes of Normandy and the Counts of Anjou were traditional enemies and entirely distinct in origin.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disapointed
I purchased this book in hope off adding information and knowledge to my own genealogical research. The book was too narrow and offered no additional informantion helpful to me. I felt the line, although accurate, was not detailed enough to use as a building block twards other works. The information contained in this book could have easily been obtained in about 15 minutes on the internet.I really did not need to know about the author's current family or see any pictures of himself or offspring(Which there are Many).I feel the title was misleading and I was looking for a book more directed towards History rather than present. ... I supposed I would not be as disapointed if the price was say half of what I paid for it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of names, nothing new
After getting tired of hearing the same horse names over and over, I thought I would give this book a try for naming our foals. I used this book more for inspiration than actually taking a name right off the page. For instance, I would use Moonlight in a name like "Moonlight On My Shoes".But it would be very hard to register a foal as just Moonlight in a large registry like AQHA. It is a good resource for barn names, nicknames, or arena names but I would not strongly reccomend it as a resource for coming up with a registration name.

5-0 out of 5 stars Horse Names
I loved this book because it gave me tons of ideas on naming my new horse. I took several names and mixed them around to come up with the best name: Ultimate Party-Goer. He is a handsome bay with lots of chrome and does well on the A-circuit. Thank you!

3-0 out of 5 stars A pretty good Source

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book For Beginners I Have Found.
I really like this book for beginners.Lately I have been giving scrapbooking start-up kits as gifts to friends and family, and have been including this book in the package.I would highly recommend this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference For Beginners
I am not new to scrapbooking, but thought I would like to have some books around for when I get "Scrappers Block".. this was the first one I chose. It's not much for pictures, but is filled with lots of practical knowledge. It fills you in on the differences between types of photo papers, adhessives, card stock, papers, and verious other things that are quite important to the look and longevity of your hard work.It is a bit dated, but the general information is a must for beginners.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very broad - good for beginner scrapbooker
I bought this book and have read it cover to cover. It is a good book; however, it is very broad and covers a little bit of everything about scrapbooking.I've been scrapbooking for almost two years and really didn't come away with any more than I already knew.I was disappointed in it for myself, but am planning on sharing it with my mom who is just getting ready to get started. There really aren't many pictures and they are in black and white.More pictures, in color, would have added a bit more to the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Most authoritative secondary work I've seen . . .
Even though I do not, to my knowledge, have a single drop of royal blood in my veins, I have a longstanding interest in peerage genealogy -- if only because the earliest surviving records concern the lineages of European society's movers and shakers, not the yeoman farmers and small tradesmen whose genes I carry. Richardson is well known and widely respected in this field, having published numerous peerage articles in the most respected journals and having been a contributor to the last couple of editions of Weis. Those of us who hang out on the soc.genealogy.medieval newsgroup have watched for years as this massive work took shape (always keeping in mind that the level of discourse in that venue often verges on the sophomoric). The final result is close to being a masterpiece not only of genealogy of the traditional sort but of comparative historiography. His purpose is to document the lines of descent for about 190 individuals who immigrated to the North American colonies before 1700 from the Plantagenet dynasty who ruled England from 1154 (the accession of Henry II, Duke of Anjou) to 1485 (the defeat and death of Richard III at Bosworth Field at the hands of Henry Tudor). He notes that his work is an expansion and major revision of David Faris's _Plantagenet Ancestry of Seventeenth-Century Colonists,_ but the new work is so very extensive, this must really be regarded as an entirely new work; Faris considered only the descendants of Henry III (who died in 1272), where Richardson traces the progeny of all sixteen of Geoffrey's great-grandchildren who left descendants, both legitimate and illegitimate. Further volumes are planned to cover descents from Magna Carta sureties, the early feudal barons, and the Emperor Charlemagne. (Remember that anyone who descends from a single royal house in Britain or on the Continent will also have descents from most of the others.)

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad -- but not what it's advertised to be
With each year, the World Wide Web becomes, more and more, the venue of first resort for family researchers -- especially for novices with insufficient background in traditional research methods, who often do not understand that the Internet hasn't made genealogy "easier," just more convenient and much less expensive. I've been a heavy user of online resources for a decade and a half, but I still make personal visits, legal pad in hand, to rural courthouses and cemeteries. I also have reviewed (in several publications) a considerable number of "Internet genealogy" how-to books over the years and I have found that many actually use that phrase only as a marketing ploy, devoting most of their attention either to genealogical methods in general or to computers and the Internet in general, not to the use of the Internet in family research. On a purely quantitative basis -- counting the pages, that is -- this volume gives about 25% of its space to traditional genealogical subjects (family group sheets, visiting a library, the nature of "courthouse records," analysis of evidence, publishing a family newsletter, etc.), and about 30% to discussions of computer issues and the Internet (how Google works, why you should make backups of your data, getting an email account, finding an ISP that will include free web page space, and so on).
5-0 out of 5 stars Opening a whole new world
I had sent a copy of this wonderfully informative and well written book to 6 of my relatives and friends hot off the press. My sister, who has lived out of the country for some 35 years and having returned to her root country, wanted to learn more about our family.I encouraged her and was thrilled to be able to send her a copy of Nancy's book. This was back in October, 2003.Since that time, its been almost a miracle of sorts...following the information and suggestions in Nancy's book, my sister was able to get in touch with our father's cousin, a college professor, only to find out that he, too, had been trying to find our family! The two of them have been sending emails back and forth since October, exchanging and sharing information, checking out family burial locations, sharing pictures, and this has opened a "whole new world" for both families. We are even planning a reunion of sort as early as next summer. We have so much gratitude to Nancy Hendrickson for embarking on this endeavor of educating those of use who are not all that savvy with the internet but also showing us that searching for one's roots on or off the internet is not as complicated as one would believe and most of all, the rewards.5-0 out of 5 stars Climbing Your Family Tree, Exploring Your Roots
Finding Your Roots Online is a MUST read for anyone who wants to use the Internet to climb their family tree. The book begins with computer and Internet basics, then moves into a detailed explanation of the four most valuable search strategies. Each strategy section is accompanied by real-life searches, along with the best Web sites for specific types of research. My favorite chapter was the one that showed how to move easily back and forth between the strategies in order to tease every bit of genealogical information out of each site.If you follow along with each search, you're sure to find several of your own ancestors. Ms Hendrickson's great experience, practical approach, and deep interest in geneology and history shine through these pages, lighting the way for beginner and experienced searchers alike. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A peculiar view on heraldic designs
John Bergling's 1,400 heraldic designs, published in 1913, walks a thin line between trying to depict heraldic designs in a pleasing simple way, and the truly awful'victoriana' as done by the likes of Fairbairn. His historic interpretation leaves something to be desired (like showing shields with crests only, which is simply 'not done'), and a lot of the American arms are drawn with slightly more Hollywood than Heraldry in mind. But sometimes you can feel some of the original power of heraldry flowing underneath his drawings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, detailed
I love this book.Although it is appropriate for beginners, it covers more topics, and in more detail, than you'd expect to find in a beginner's book, making it perfect for advanced-beginner or intermediate genealogists. For instance, most books will mention cemetery research, but this one details all the different *kinds* of cemeteries there are (I had no idea) and discusses what to bring when you're going to a cemetery, how to photograph a tombstone, the ins and outs of tombstone rubbings, etc.4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for the Beginning Genealogist

5-0 out of 5 stars The ancient writer captivates the reader!
I have read many biographies of famous historical figures, written by modern scholars, but none had the immediacy, the thrilling emphasis to minor details and the power of words that Suetonius' work features. The Roman historian proves that he was a true child of the classical world, having the gift of telling his stories in a few but full of meaning sentences. I think that after reading Suetonius one has a powerful image of every emperor as a human being first and as a ruler second. Hats off to the ancient writers who are the top specialists to explain the inner secrets of their society and epoch!

When you need a break from memorizing the dates of the Punic Wars, are bored speculating over what kind of salt the Romans used to sow Carthaginian fields, have given up on finding Philippi on any modern map, and can't quite recall the names of the dramatis personae during the year of the three emperors, this book will re-stimulate your interest in history by gratifying the natural human desire to learn more about crime in high places. 2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Non-USA Research - Very Misleading Title
I have to strongly disagree with the words "for all genealogists" in the book title. This is a great book if you are doing beginning or intermediate research in the United States. This book appears to be about 250 pages (un-numbered).It's complete with basic forms such as pedigree and family group sheets, but goes beyond with census extraction forms & check lists, Military Record checklists, research planning worksheets and contact logs.Croom's has includedcompleted examples of these forms which make it easy to understand.Veryhelpful to new and intermediate users. ...
