Editorial Review

If you've ever thought of find your roots, Emily Anne Croom's is the genealogy guide to get you going. She's got sensible chapters on how to get started, the meaning of names, the difference between a family history of dates and a family history of stories, how to gather sources, who to interview, and how to fit it all together. Croom breaks the process into bite-sized pieces to turn it into a fun project that takes shape and grows with each new family scrap. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars genealogy research
this is a great book for people getting started with serious genealogy research. The new version (4th edition) gives useful tips for incorporating internet searching

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent teaching (and marketing) for the lazy student
Excellent information that I've found very useful as I'm beginning to learn basic research methods. My only complaint is that these editions become outdated fairly quickly and constantly require you to buy a new edition.Which might be understandable except I'm having no problem learning from the edition published in 1983.Much of the information clearly would be unchanged, so there seems little reason (aside from cynical tarket marketing) in plunking down a new $20 every few years only to get some updated appendix information or addresses easily found on the internet.Oh, and save your $16 on the workbook, stop being lazy, fire up your word processor, and create your own worksheets (Croom even generously teaches you how -- except for that cynical tarket marketing part).I really don't hold Croom responsible for this anymore than I would hold my grandmother responsible for not understanding the depths to which the marketing people for corporate publishers will stoop to suck money from both readers and authors.I've talked to Emily Croom via Barnes and Noble University and she's an excellent teacher and an obviously kind and patient woman who is very knowledgeable about genealogy research methods.Trust me, I thought I was unteachable! But do your own legwork, find another way to donate money to Croom for being the genealogy elder that she is, and keep your wallet away from what is clearly a corporate marketing scam of constant updates.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is by far the best book general methods book I have found.I highly recommend it to anyone beginning genealogical research and to those who are veterans, as well.I have given several to friends with a fledgling interest in genealogical research. It is indispensible for the beginner & I highly recommend it to everyone. Organized in a logical, easy to follow manner; not too technical; practical -- just plain good. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Lisa See, daughter of novelist Carolyn See, brings a novelist's skill to this sprawling ancestral history. Books tracing the roots of overseas Chinese writers are not uncommon these days, but See uncovered in her family tree a capsule history of the Sino-American diaspora: her great-grandfather, Fong See, founded a California business, married a Caucasian woman and fathered many offspring, and returned periodically to China to redistribute some of his wealth and launch another family. 5-0 out of 5 stars A new family
I wish I had read this book first.I read Lisa's Flower Net and enjoyed it so much that I looked to see what else she had written. Finding On Gold Mountain (thanks, Amazon) I became immersed in the life of the author and her family.I have read so many stories of Chinese families in Mainland China and Taiwan, but this is the first I have read of the Chinese American experience. It is doubly interesting because of the marriages between Chinese and Caucasians, and how they resolved their cultural differences during a time when China itself was undergoing so many cultural changes.I highly recomend the book for its content and for its excellent narrative style.

5-0 out of 5 stars An odyssey of a read
Lisa See, in describing the journey of her family over one hundred years, also takes the reader on aliterary journey. I have read many auto-biographical and semi-auto-biographical accounts of the Chinese diaspora and Lisa's book is amongst the best.We can read her book as an adventure and also as a history.A history about which she must be proud. This book has inspired me to write about my own family, who made a similar journey, over a hundred years ago, but in Australia

5-0 out of 5 stars The author carries you along on her odyssey!
Lisa See's path to discover where and how she fits in in this gifted, and far from ordinary immigrant American family is as much your story as it is hers. Her writing is fresh and alive enough to hold your interest and make you want to hear more from and about this author. Her mother is Carolyn See, who has written a little about Lisa's history in her own book, Dreaming: Good Luck and Hard Times in America.Look over both books and be prepared to hunker down for a while. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Rough at best
Only mildly accurate, the clumsy mix of true Gaelic forms along with Anglicizations leaves me a bit put off. This might make it useful to many, but it is not at all formal in structure. There are also some names with variations given that are just ridiculously old. Noone uses the root 'dub' in place of 'dubh.' Some truly ancient names are included, but their selections are random. It appears to be mostly gloss from a few limited sources.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for reading and reference
This charming name book will assist parents in choosing the appropriate Celtic name for their baby as it provides an extensive list of evocative Irish names. But why an Irish name? For some reason, this musical language and the magical legends of Ireland have become very popular in the Anglo-Saxon world and further afield. The introduction discusses trends in the giving of names and mentions the most popular current Irish names. The chapter Little Dark One provides a cursory history of the settling of Ireland by the Celts and then lists and explains suitable names for dark haired people, such as Darcy, Douglas and Duane. In the chapter The Fairest Of Them All there's mention of the Tuatha De Danaan and a discussion of names like Barry, Finbar, Kelly, etc. Red haired people are treated in the next chapters, where some of the more common names are Rory and Rowan, whilst the next chapter deals with names deriving from the root words for light or brightness; these include Aidan and Keegan. A Celtic Menagerie provides names that are connected with animal names or qualities: here you will find Colm, Conan, Conor, Oscar and Ronan. In the chapter titled The Green Isle, names derived from plants are given, including Darren and Tyrone. Warrior names in the next chapter include Casey, Fergal and Kane. Wednesday's Child provides names for less worthy traits, like Doran, Etain and Kennedy. Banshee names include Bevin, Cliona and Una, while names invented by authors include Fiona, Gulliver, Imogen and Vanessa. The next chapter discusses and lists the retranslation back into Irish, of popular Anglophonic names and also provides a list of Irish names with their English translations. The A - Z index lists all the names and their meanings/histories alphabetically and is followed by a calendar of saints' feast days. This interesting read and valuable reference work concludes with a thorough index.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Full for Such a Little Book

5-0 out of 5 stars Tough knights in shining armour
This is a very good introduction to the history of the military religious orders: Templars, Hospitallers of Saint John (today Knights of Malta), Santiago, Calatrava, Alcantara, Teutons and others. The first ones, Templars and Hospitallers, were founded in the XII Century, after the First Crusade, in order to protect pilgrims in the Holy Land and to provide humanitarian and medical services. Soon, these monks became more warriors than anything else, true machines of war which came to be the first organized and properly trained and disciplined professional elite troops in the West since the Roman Empire. The West and Islam lived then (and still do) in a permanent state of threat and holy war. Although these warriors made vows of poverty, obedience and chastity, they soon accumulated enormous riches, fighted one another and their discipline, especially in sexual matters, relaxed.
2-0 out of 5 stars Good reference material, bad read.
Be prepared to sift through some slow and awkward writing and to figure what are the important parts on your own.Don't expect help on this from Seward, who seems unable to separate the wheat from the chaff of the history of the various orders.

5-0 out of 5 stars First-rate entry in a very good series . . .
The volumes in Betterway's "Genealogist's Guide" series have been genrally excellent in leading researchers through the special problems, situations, and resources connected with non-Anglo-European-male ancestors. Anyone, even an otherwise experienced family historian, who has attempted to develop a black lineage more than three or four generations back in the United States knows the historical and social problems involved often are considerable - but they aren't insurmountable, as the authors show. Smith, a Houston librarian with legal training, learned early of the reluctance of his elderly relatives to discuss the "slave days" and of the tendency of black genealogists to end their quest with the 1870 census. He begins with the basics, the stuff we all learned (or should have) in the first year of research, but slants it toward the necessities of African-American history, including the need to deal with frequent name-changes, "consulting the elders," and evaluating family stories (both of which are especially important here). Likewise, in reading the federal census schedules, one must understand what was meant, both officially and locally, by "colored" and "mulatto," the definitions of which changed over time. Military service records, an important resource in most white pedigrees, are more problematic for black lineages before World War II. Church records are proportionately more important. Smith gives considerable space to the use of white (i.e., slaveholding) family records in tracing black families, and to the proper use of the federal census slave schedules -- subjects few of us have much experience with. Finally, he relates all this through three extended cases drawn from his own family research which exemplify the techniques and adjusted mind-sets he explained earlier. They're well written, carefully worked out, and inspirational as well as informative, and are worth the price of admission by themselves. ... Read more

This work contains biographical portraits of some of the most important figures in Jewish history. The book is written with a clear factual tone, and provides accurate information on the entries. It is a kind of short encyclopedia and I believe an excellent educational tool in the Jewish people's struggle to deal with their own ignorance about themselves and their history.

It included census information and actual specific locations of families, and it included more families than any other source I have ever seen on County Kerry.Nothing else has this scopeso it is the first book I go to for Kerry info...not another coffee tablebook, great for those who really want information. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars just say no
years ago i was drawn into the e.j. gold matrix by this very book. gold's appropriation of crucial and to-some-extent lost sacred information, made me mistakenly believe that i was treading on holy ground here...the real agenda at work however, in all of mr. gold's 'work,' is to keep you as asleep as mr. gold is telling you you are...'you are feeling sleepy,' says the hypnotist. e.j. gold is in fact, a classic example of the dangerous and abusive guru. difficult to find information on this, but the truth is out there; you just have to find it...be careful and steer clear. look at and trust robert thurman's translation of the tibeten book of the dead--a little more work--the real deal.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fast reading, slow comprehension.
All the best of both worlds and then some.

How does one prepare for the inevitable? This is possibly one of the oldest questions mankind has asked. But first we must ask, "how important is it to prepare?" Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best comprehensive book on greatest men & women of Japan
This is the best book I have read in either Japanese or English that gives a comprehensive, easy to read and balanced overview of the lives of 37 people who contributed into making Japan into what it is today. The book presents people from diverse aspects of Japan: industry, traditional culture, history, modern writers and film directors. The people span from the first ever novelist in the world Murasaki (c.975-c.1025) to Morita Akio, the co-founder of Sony. The biographies are short and concise and are on average 10 pages long. It is not necessary to read the entire book at once, but read one biography and come back to another one at a later time. I have read and reread the book numerous times and have been inspired by the lives of each one of the people profiled.
5-0 out of 5 stars Diverse and Interesting history of Japanese individuals
Much has been written about the history of Japan from the point of view of society and group dynamics. This is understandable given Japan's interdependent culture.Mark Weston's Giants of Japan is one of the first that covers Japan from the point of view of it's great individuals. The subjects of the book range from well known industrialists (Konosku Matsuhita) and leaders (Tokogawa Ieyasu) to lesser known writers (Fukuzawa Yukichi) and directors (Ozu Yasujiro).
5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoy a ride of Japanese history!
Giants of Japan is a very pleasant introduction to Japanese history, organized in a succession of biographies of the most influential figures in Japanese business, politics, arts and sports. In addition to being well-written, the book offers a good mix of key facts and anecdotes, making the reading both interesting and exciting.
