5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Insight of the Medieval Lifestyle of a Knight,
The information coupled with the detailed, amazing illustrations make this book a must when wanting to learn the lifestyle of a feudal knight. The book shows aerial and cut-away illustrations of a castle. It also shows detailed illustrations and information on how the knights armor was put together and put on with assistance. The World of the Medieval Knight also explained the process in which a noble man's son would become a knight. This information alone makes this book a useful book while learning about the Middle Ages, but it also covers customs and feasts and town life. This book exceeded my expectations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful illustrations; keen views on the medieval knight
This is a great book not only for young people who want to learn about castles and the medieval lifestyle but also adults who are first learning about the period.5-0 out of 5 stars A well written book on castles, knights, arms and armor.
This was a wonderfully written book on the knights world. This book goes into many interesting details of the medieval knights world and is both entertaining and informative. There is even interspersed humor. My 8 yearold son has taken it out of the library twice and has asked for it forChristmas. It has also inspired him to try and make his own knights helmet. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good--but Anglocentric and only runs through 1982
With "Trade Name Origins" Adrian Room delivers another fine work of lexicography and onomastics. However, be forewarned: as he is an Englishman, this work has much stronger coverage of British companies than of companies based in the U.S., Japan, and Europe (though the major ones are covered, e.g. Coke, Sony, Agfa). Also, this is a reprinting of the 1982 edition, not a new edition, so there is no mention of companies formed after that date. This is apparently the only dictionary of this sort out there, though, so even if it weren't up to Room's usual high standard it would still be a valuable addition to your reference shelf. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Don't expect a quilter's handbook here: this is local history at its best
Laurel Horton is an independent folklorist and textile scholar who examines the family quilting traditions of six generations in Mary Black's Family Quilts: Memory And Meaning In Everyday Life. Sixteen quilts here tell the story of the family, a South Carolina legend - and reveals the trunks full of quilts Black left to her descendants. Don't expect a quilter's handbook here: this is local history at its best.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting approach, but not great
If you are looking for Jewish names that start with a particular letter (which I think is how many people go about naming their babies, especially if they have a particular family member that they would like to commemorate) this book is not convenient to use.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good shem is better than good shemen
As it is said, `a good name is better than fragrant oil (tov shem mi shemen tov)."A straightforward good guide, and listings of male and female names, selected from Kolatch's other works which date back to 1948.Also includes about 200 unisex names, such as Ari, Avi, Dodi, Ariel, Doron, Lior, Sharon, Tzipor and Zohar. For each listing, Kolatch provides a meaning and a Hebrew equivalent. For example, Larry is Latin and directs the reader to see "Laurence."Laurence's listing states that is is latin meaning `laurel crown.'The Hebrew equivalent is listed as Kalil.Mario's listing is akin to Marcus, meaning warlike as in "Mars.".The Hebrew equivalent is listed as Mordechai.ZIPORA will direct the reader to TZIPORA, which, when found, states that it is from the Hebrew, meaning "bird."It's Hebrew equivalent is naturally, "Tzipora."Listings for Tzipori (my bird) and Tziporit and Tzipi occur close to Tzipora.George is listed as Greek, meaning farmer; its Hebrew equivalent is listed as Choresh. But there is no listing for Choresh. The book is fine for 98% of readers, but if you are wondering whether you should name your child Gilad with an Aleph or an Ayin, then you need to consult a book with Hebrew characters or a local Hebraist.I would like the book better if it included Hebrew spellings, and if it listed some famous personages for each name listing. For example, the listing for Boaz should mention where he occurs in the stort of Ruth; or Jose should mention the Aramaic speaking rabbis by that name ... 5-0 out of 5 stars More Dating Old Photographs
The book is great for the collecter or seller. Photos were very vivid and very well done. Really a help to me for my old photos.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction
As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, and "More Dating Old Photographs" would have to be considered an encyclopedia when it comes to dating and identifying old pictures. This is a very useful book for the social historian or the genealogist. By studying the actual 19th and early 20th century photographs in this book - and there are hundreds of pictures from the 1840's through the 1910's - one would have the ability to closely identify not only the era of the photo they may have in question, but, in doing so, may even discover who the mystery person in the photograph might be. 5-0 out of 5 stars This book has really opened up my eyes!!!
I bought this book last summer, and while other teens were reading more popular books, I was reading a history book.It has really changed my outlook on western history.I have always been interested in the Oregon Trail, and such, but this has really encouraged meto read more of her books, and otheres like it.Y'all have got to readthis book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lively, entertaining, informative & readable.
The women of the early American West played a significant role in history, but many of their stories went untold, their voices unheard -- until thisbook. It's so readable, so filled with glimpses of lives and dreams, it'shard to put down.Who can forget Shell Flower, the Native American girlwho thought white people were owls when she first saw them; or MaryRichardson Walker, struggling to be free yet fit the mold of the "TrueWoman"; or Lalu Nathoy, who sailed to America from China dreaming offortune, only to be sold into prostitution.Or Esther Morris, the uppitywoman who helped make Wyoming the first territory or state to grant votingrights to women. The book is crammed with memorable characters: thesporting women of Colorado who wore yellow satin and hid their pain withopium, the wild women like Calamity Jane and the French gamblers inCalifornia, the homesteaders, basket weavers, quiltmakers, each with astory of courage, hilarity or heartbreak. The book has recipes, letters, photographs, and songs. It's like a patchwork quilt, each piece abit of priceless history. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Family life
England on the eve of the modern period was a troubled place, but the Pastons made the most of it, rising from Norfolk farming to national celebrity. Their letters (covering a period from about 1420 to 1503) give a remarkably modern idea of their characters and much fascinating information about daily life, society, commerce and the law. The women as well as the men in the family come over as extremely well informed. This seems to be the only edition in print at the moment. The entire collection was last published in two parts in 1971 and 1976, edited by Norman Davis, but the letters included here have been well selected. The Paston Letters make an eventful and informative read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice entry to an essential area of genealogy.
Land records are important to genealogists in many ways. There's the simplicity of just knowing more about your ancestor, the idea of following migration, but also there's a great feeling of being grounded when you see EXACTLY where it is your ancestor lived and breathed.5-0 out of 5 stars Another excellent entry in a very good series . . .
There are fundamental methodological differences in tracing the history of your Pilgrim ancestors, who got off the boat in Massachusetts and never moved away, and your itchy-footed pioneer forebears, who always were on the edge of settlement, forever looking toward the west. (I have a line which, in a single long generation, moved state-by-state from Baltimore in the 1790s to Iowa in the 1830s.) One of the biggest problems is the tendency of early settlers to arrive somewhere ahead of the recordkeeping apparatus - but recording the ownership of land was almost always the first thing put on paper as soon as the government's clerks arrived. These records often are underused, especially in "metes and bounds" states, because ploughing through a three-page description of boundaries can be daunting. Hatcher, a CG and FASG, and a specialist in problem-solving, has an almost inhuman fondness for land records, however, which she largely succeeds in communicating in this book. She leads you carefully through the steps, from locating that first deed (or grant, or confirmation of colonial title), to tracking the later transfers of ownership, to understanding just what it is you're reading, to knowing how to select and record the essentials, to interpreting what it all means. There are plenty of examples and several case studies, plus a detailed bibliography of key maps and gazetteers for each state. She also includes numerous historical sidelights, such as the observation that less than half the federal public lands originally went to individuals. (Think "railroads.") This is an excellent and highly readable text in an important subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A different kind of book
I have just received this book. Although I expected more examples of completed pages, I was not disappointed. I have more than enough books and magazines to confuse me with too many ideas. It is a comprehensive, easy to understand entry into the world of creating a true heritage album. It is a wonderful resource and I would strongly recommend it to anyone wants to enhance the stories and information you have about your treasured photos. I have always been confused about how to proceed with research of my families but this book answers it all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Creating Your Family Heritage Scrapbook
I received this book for Christmas and have already read several of the chapters... if you are new to genealogy or scrapbooking this is the book for you.My only complaint is that the authors jumped around too much with the lay-out of the book. There are "mini-articles" in the middle of chapters, so you have to skip around to read a chapter. Not a book that you can sit and read from cover to cover comfortably. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Much good work but not enough emphasis on Jewish values
This book has a great amount of commendable material in it. It writes of Jewish women of great distinction in short yet clear autobiographical sketches. It however diminishes its own value but including a too large number of present- day celebrities and lightweight figures. It too displays a certain political bias and there are a number of very left- wing politicians here whose contribution to Jewish life is extremely questionable. I also would have like to have seen many more of the great Jewish women intellectual figures, and heroines like Avital Sharansky , Ida Nudel and others who risked their lives for the Jewish people. A very large share of the entries are of people who have no real positive connection with Jewish communal life, and who just happen to be born Jewish something a few of them are not so happy about.
1-0 out of 5 stars Great?
While there are some genuinely great Jewish women in this book, there are too many whose claim to greatness rests solely on fame and left-leaning politics. How is Barbara Streisand a "Great Jewish Woman"? Is it because she is a great Democtratic fundraiser? And How does Shulamit Aloni get to be great? By being an anti-Israeli Israeli? Diane Arbus (eeww) hated being Jewish and would be uncomfortable to see her name in this book if she hadn't killed herself, and Estee Lauder became a Roman Catholic........not exactly a "Great Jewish Woman".5-0 out of 5 stars A great gift for Jewish Women
This book makes a great graduation gift or other gift for any jewish woman, young or old. It illustrates the accomplishments of women and shows the adversity that they overcame to achieve greatness. Enjoyable for woman of any age. ... Read more
