3-0 out of 5 stars genealogy book source
Mr. Ray gives many good tidbits about the Tennessee Territory and often can provide you with new clues as to where to look for your ancestors.Unfortunately, he never bothered to document any of his sources and isthus, unacceptible as a "best evidence" book if you are wishingto join such societies as the DAR/SAR or other historical societies, whichrequire everything to be closely documented.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Blueprint for Writing One's Family History
This text is a blueprint for getting your family history on paper. I belong to a family history writing group that grew out of our local genealogy group in Oakland, California, The African American Genealogy Society of Northern California (AAGSNC). Our group, some writers, some not, wanted to get our families' stories and histories on paper and into print to hand down to future generations but was having a difficult time in how to go about doing it. The method used in this volume makes it simple; one step at a time, one story at a time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for United Kingdom genealogical research!
This book is well worth the price.I started using an older version at a local library, but really needed something for home use.So I ordered the 2003 version and am completely delighted. The newer version added an overall map of the UK at the beginning and has added Scotland. Each map is "pre-1832 parishes and a topographical map from James Bell's A New and Comprehensive Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1834".And for someone doing a lot of work in Yorkshire, they have it divided into the 3 regions, East Riding, West Riding and North Riding. The only thing I would like the next version to include is an index of every little town and village and what parish it is in.Probably would double the price and thickness of the book, but what a treasure that would be.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding reference book of UK genealogical research

2-0 out of 5 stars Good book, Bad translation, do not buy
Ill give it 2 stars instead of 1. because it is not nietzsche i have the prolem with.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Wake Up Call for Christians: How the World Views Hypocrisy
"Die, Jew!" These words and other anti-Semitist phrases echo through the reader's mind as he studies this piece. Friedrich Nietzsche's Genealogy of Morals is the powerful piece of literature with more than controversial ideals.Upon reading it, one gets the sense that this work is the product of a demented, enraged mind.In the course of this reading, Nietzsche shows his ability to captivate a reader with his reason, no matter how twisted his reason is.After reading this selection I came to the assumption that Nietzsche used his brilliant mind to make broad, generalized attacks against those whom he claims are responsible for the problems in the world.2-0 out of 5 stars This is a poor translation of an excellent book
The translator of this volume does not seem to grasp what Nietzsche istrying to do.He omits passages that are important for understanding ofthe text simply because the importance of them is not always clear atfirst. He also omits the references that Nietzsche makes to his ownearlier works. This makes the text flow more smoothly, but doesn't allowthe reader the opportunity get a handle on what Nietzsche is up to, anddoesn't give the reader a sense of what other works by this author might beof interest.Again, this is a good work, but there are better translationsavailable! ... Ethnic Nationalism: Genealogy, Politics, And Legacy by Gi-Wook Shin (Director of the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center) explores the roots, politics, and legacy of Korean ethnic nationalism. Descriptively analyzing the separation and differences in the communist north and democratic south of the Korean peninsula, Ethnic Nationalism addresses the general identity formation of the two Koreas. A core addition to academic library International Studies reference collections, Ethnic Nationalism is strongly recommended to the attention of political science, sociology, and cultural anthropology students studying the contrasts and similarities of North and South Korea through their collective history of anti-colonialism, civil war, authoritarian politics, democratization, territorial division, and globalization.

2-0 out of 5 stars Antiquated Treatment of a Valuable Genealogical Topic
As a professional genealogist who also teaches, I tell my students that the topic of genealogical organization is one that must be addressed by all genealogists, amateur or professional alike. For publishing on this topic in 1999, I applaud Carmack.
5-0 out of 5 stars Can only buy ONE book on Genealogy Research? Get this one!
This book is EXACTLY what you should get before you really get "into" doing your genealogy research. Wish I had! Instead I found myself being overwhelmed with what I had found and my various tries at organizing it just wasn't working! I did my research and this books looked like it had the most of what I wanted. That was an understatement. I have a LOT of work to do to organize my 1+ years of research ... but this book is really helping me get my act together.3-0 out of 5 stars Good portions, but overall, terribly stilted.
This is not a bad book. Parts of this book are extremely helpful to help you organize your genealogical papers. The probem with this book is that the author lets her own dated opinion keep her from seeing the bigger picture in the state of genealogical research. In essence, she spites herself out of writing an excellent resource.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars updated tripe
This edition of the book is more up-to-date, so it's actually useful somewhat.Mostly, though, it's a book written by experts for experts. There is little thought given to the practical application of genealogy -- making friends with newly found relatives, for example, and family reunions. There is no mention of the politics that go into genealogy. You can easily destroy your family by writing the wrong date for a marriage on your descendant chart, but the book totally omits important facts like that!It has a small chapter on DNA, which is nice, but it leaves out critical information on that topic, too.The "Idiot's" title of this book is misleading; the authors fail to think like a layman.Beware.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and logically organized
Supposedly, there are about 2,000 Japanese family crests, with origins that reach back more than a millenium. And while I can't say whether this book contains all two thousand, it's nevertheless pretty comprehensive. They're presented in columns of black images--each image about 2" in diameter--and grouped by theme (e.g., crests depicting one cherry blossom, then crests based on 2 blossoms, then crests based on 3 blossoms, etc.).
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for Graphic Design Inspiration
Page, after page, after page of great designs. 5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the price...
I've lusted after this book ever since I saw it in the library years ago. Unfortunately, I couldn't remember the name (I should've stolen it then!). So what a delight to finally rediscover it. The images in this book have haunted me, and defied my attempts to recreate even a few of them from memory. There are more permutations on each motif than one can possibly think of. An endless wealth of source material for logos, symbols, backgrounds, graphics. This book is a must-have for any designer interested in or influenced by Japanese design! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Medieval Fighting for Fun!
In Tournaments, Richard Barber and Juliet Barker set out to trace the development of tournaments from the early melees to the later elaborate spectacles.Barber and Barker believe that tournaments were an important part of medieval society as well as a form of training for knights. They also believe that while tournaments certainly had a strong influence on romantic literature, the tournaments were themselves influenced by romantic literature.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Easily the best general book on Tournaments available. Some people might have wanted to more detail in certain areas buut when you concider what the authors are trying to achieve I feel they found an excellent balance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Everything you wanted to know about tournaments...
While books about tournaments usually just describe what tournaments generally were like .., this book takes a look at the actual historical events themselves. It describes many historical tournaments, famous participants, the backgrounds and the changing nature of the events from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance etc. In fact, the book tries to cover almost everything related to tournaments (from public disorder in tournaments to the time of day). Even so, the book holds together well and is easy to read. It is illustrated with fine historical paintings and drawings from books of the time with only a couple of photos (no modern or dismal 19-Century historical sketches). Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read if you are having a Reunion!
Excellent book with a lot of info and good Ideas. Will not be disappointed with this Book!A great book for planning a reunion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Look no farther -- this is the book you need!
Family reunions are not, for many of us, as basic a part of family research as they might be, and books on the subject usually reflect that. If most of your relatives still live within a day's drive, you probably see them regularly and an annual picnic is almost a routine event, dedicated to introducing new offspring and remembering the recently deceased. If your family is scattered all over the country, as is true of probably a majority of the American population these days, a reunion becomes a special event with a significant outlay in time and money for both planners and attendees, but the activities are still largely the same. But Sandy Clunies, a Certified Genealogist and frequent speaker at the national level, is a very experienced family researcher and past winner of the NGS Family History Writing Contest, so her interest here is primarily in the role of genealogy at the family reunion. How could any attentive researcher pass up the chance to graze among all those memories and experiences brought together for a few days in one place?

4-0 out of 5 stars DNA Genealogy
Serious genealogists hobbyists and professionals will be excited by this new resource, which thoroughly explains the new science of DNA testing and how it can be applied to family history research. Although this book is not for everyone, if you have successfully passed high school biology, you should be able to manage the information and its technology in this excellent reference. Wouldn't it be interesting for a man and his wife to go back in time to discover about when they might have had an ancestor in common? DNA testing and analysis had give you that and much more. It can even give you an idea what part of the world your pre-historical ancestors lived and migrated to. The authors practice what they preach and tell how we can do it too, with many DNA labs and companies listed and compared. We rated this book four hearts.

4-0 out of 5 stars thought-provoking and entertaining
You wouldn't think a book of obituaries would be entertaining, but it is when the obits are well-written and celebrate the lives and characters of the 100+ people found in this collection. The subjects are most often unknown to the majority of us, but the various authors (including well-known NYT obituary author Robert McG. Thomas, Jr.) humanize each subject and inspire you to contemplate your own life. Most essays are a couple of pages long, and there is an introduction by Russell Baker.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indeed, the Last Word on Obituary Writing
Rather than an ode to death, this book cherishes lives onced lived by all kinds of people. Whether brilliant or simple, rich or poor, actions great or discreet, each of the people written about contributed to society in a meaningful (and often surprising) way. Equally outstanding are the authors of these obituaries, whose writing talents manage to entertain, educate and move the reader deeply without being maudlin. Even more importantly, this book forces us to examine our own lives: what will people say about us when we've faced our Maker? For those of us who come up pitifully short, this book inspires even the common man to contribute to society, and strive for -- and hopefully, attain -- spiritual immortality.

5-0 out of 5 stars A helluva book
I teach Memoir Writing to local seniors and I routinely use this book as an example of outstanding biography. It's one thing to write a 250 word bio but quite another, and much more demanding, to pen a few-hundred-wordlast goodbye to someone and do it with panache. The NY Times has threebooks of obituaries, this is the most recent. The quality of the writingis, in many cases, superior to anything in the rest of the newspaper(allthe obits here were published in the Times).I especially like the reviewsof Robert McG Thomas, who died within the past year at age 60.Hisobituaries deserved a Pulitzer. His obits are worth the price of the book.Everybody deserves a last word. These obits are not just about famouspeople but about average joes and janes who have been extraordinary humanbeings.I'd even recommend this book for spiritual reading because thelives here are inspirational.I teach writing and am always on the lookoutfor examples of prose that will knock my socks off. This is one helluvabook. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas but needed critique from MM
I'm creating a Heritage album and found this book very useful for ideas; however, many of the submitted pages (from scrap-bookers)that they showed suffer from a lack of journaling and/or clarity, so it is hard to tell the stages of the family trees. I wish MM had critiqued some of the family trees to show how they could be improved so that future generations... and even the creator in a few decades!... could easily determine the line of descedants. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars world of baby names
I was so happy to see this book listed. We have babies on the way in the family, plus animals and dolls to name. I love the fact that it lets you know the meanings and derivation of the multi-cultural names that we hear everyday.
3-0 out of 5 stars a good baby name book, but not the best
I like this book.It is a good collection of names(although not the 30,000 promised)from various areas of the world, from South East Asia to Wales, and from Ireland to the Usa.It certinly will be useful in naming your child if youre after a multi cultural name.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best baby name book
This is the best baby name book I have ever seen.We love the Italian section--very accurate, and nice.We also enjoy looking through the others. There are 31 chapters. They include:African names, African-American names, American, Biblical, Chinese, Czech and Slovak, English, French, German, Greek, Hawaiian, Hindu/Indian, Hungarian, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Jewish/Hebrew, Korean, Muslim/Arabic, Mythology, North American Indian, Polish, Polynesian, Portuguese, Rumanian, Russian, Scandinavian, Scottish, Southeast Asian, Spanish, and Welsh.
