I enjoyed the book immensely. The book has good information about places that do genetic testing to trace human migration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trace Your Roots with DNA: Using Genetic tests to Explore your Family Tree
I think this book is a wonderful effort on a different way to approach genealogy. It is well researched, well organized, and well written. The authors both seem to know their subject very well.

An Interesting read and a good compliment to
5-0 out of 5 stars The dramatic story of the Knights Templar
The Knights Templar was a monastic order of Christian warriors that grew out of the medieval campaigns to free Jerusalem and Palestine from the domination of the Muslims in several waves of invasion known collectively as the Crusades. These warrior monks were believed to conduct mystical rites, guard the famed Holy Grail, and possess the lost treasures of Jerusalem. The order's wealth and political activities evolved to provide banking services to kings, act as trusted diplomats, engage in far flung business enterprise, and even work as navigators. The order was ultimately doomed to succumb to political intrigue and the malevolent greed of kings. In The Templars And The Grail: Knights Of The Quest, Oxford-based medieval historian Karen Ralls presents the dramatic story of the Knights Templar, presenting the many beliefs and theories about their presumed powers and arcane knowledge. Drawing upon both popular and academic sources, this impressive, exceptionally well written, and thoroughly accessible history is especially recommended to students of Metaphysical Studies and Medieval History.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for all
I am using this book to add to a family tree album that I will be giving my sons for Christmas. While it is helpful, it does exclude someone who has been married two or more times.I had to fill out two diffent pages for two different marriages. However, what is really wonderful about the book is that you answer pertinent questions and leave others blank.I think both our sons will find the book interesting. When I finish I will sit my husband down and he can do one also!Worth investing in.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful in the naming game
The best thing about this book was something that I saw in no other book. One of the ways we were looking at to name our child was to find words (or the meaning of the names for those we were naming for) and finding the hebrew word that meant that. This is the only book with a dictionary in the back of words (i.e., if you look up song, you will find Shira, if you look up Strong, you will find Ethan). So it was helpful when we were looking at naming in that way. There are so many names in here, it is great - not all of them are Jewish, per se, but all names seem to be in the book.It was extremely helpful in naming our child!

1-0 out of 5 stars dislikes of internet sells
I wanted to take a quick look over the internet but the people who programed this site will not let you scan the book for one second. It is sad that you would have to by the book just to look for one sorry thing. And I am ashamed at the situation. And at the creaters of this site for not giving anyone the chance to look before they buy.

In my opinion Douglas Richarson has provided a well researched book.It will be a main source of reference for years to come.
5-0 out of 5 stars This growing series will keep me busy for a long time!
In 2004, Richardson, a highly regarded specialist in royal and peerage genealogy with numerous published articles to his credit, brought out the first volume in a planned series -- _Plantagenet Ancestry,_ which tracked the descents of some 190 immigrants to the North American colonies from the Plantagenet monarchs of England, and which weighed in at 945 pages. This second installment is 150 pages thicker, and there are at least two more volumes in development, on descents from early feudal barons, and from the Emperor Charlemagne.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Read
I loved the way the author achieved combining the personal lives of the Mitford family and the history of the times. In hindsight, it's easy to say that Diana and Unity should have been smarter about Hitler. But it was a time when he almost had a whole continent enamored with his achievement shown by the economic advances of Germany. No one in the free world acted on the atrocities that happened on his watch because these acts were incomprehensible at the time..so how could the two Mitford sisters, Diana and Unity even anticipate the horrors that he was finally associated with. They were attracted to the glamour, the power, the popularity and intelligence they believed Hitler had. Were they wrong??Yes...but at the time it seemed like he was the rescuer, and I thought that Lovell was very fair portraying the situation..never revealing her feelings about this.It was a beautifully researched book which presented the sisters and family as very real..even Tom, who was absent during the time doinng his wartime duty, but portrayed as a very influentuial and loved character in the family. I thoroughly enjoyed this book..I became very attached to all of the sisters for different reasons..and I loved Sydney and thought she imparted a great sense of confidence for her girls to develop their independent selves..

5-0 out of 5 stars There'll always be an England
The Mitfords were an aristocratic but not very wealthy English family. The family was so dominated in the early 20th century by six sisters that it's easy to overlook that there was also a son among the siblings. Perhaps it was the upper class rural isolation in which the children were raised that made several of them so headstrong, eccentric, and well over the top.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not that interesting
Yes, these sisters are all rich and/or famous, but I found it very hard to care.Maybe because I found them boring.I'm too old to care about Paris Hilton and too young to find the era these sisters lived in very interesting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So you want to write a memoir?
Memoir writers Russell Baker, Annie Dillard, Alfred Kazin, Toni Morrison, and Lewis Thomas share their thoughts on writing memoir. The chapters are taken from a series of talks given on the subject.4-0 out of 5 stars Capturing Memories
Capturing Your Memories3-0 out of 5 stars On Writing a Memoir
According to Webster, the definition of memoir is "a biographical sketch, usually one written by someone who knows the subject well."It is from the Latin word memoria, meaning memory. But in Inventing the Truth, Annie Dillard says, "Don't hope in a memoir to preserve your memories. If you prize your memories as they are by all means avoid--eschew--writing a memoir" (70). Inventing the Truth: The Art and Craft of Memoir is a sort of instructional anthology composed of six chapters written by six authors. The purpose of this book, edited and introduced by William Zinsser, is to give writers different perspectives on how to write a memoir. If you are writing a memoir, or even just thinking about writing one, this book will be helpful to you.It contains examples of good memoir writing, advice on what to put in and what to leave out, and an overview of the process of writing a memoir. The advice given by William Zinsser and the other five contributors to Inventing the Truth pertains mostly to organizing memories.Annie Dillard's chapter entitled "To Fashion a Text" is very focused on memoir writing, and would not prove useful to the average Joe.However, Lewis Thomas' chapter called "A Long Line of Cells" would be interesting for anyone to read. Unless you are thinking about writing a memoir, this book probably will not entirely interest you. ... Read more

Unbelieveably badly written. How can you make this family boring? Also, seemed to "borrow" from a lot of other authors. Don't waste your time.

2-0 out of 5 stars NIcholas Faith has a problem with gangsters
This isn't a bad book but Nicholas Faith has a problem acknowledging the gangster beginning of the Bronfman fortune. Pure and simple Sam B et all were thugs and likely murders. Mr. Faith goes to grea great endless endless lengths to explaine how anti-semnitism shaped the Bronfman's. Huh. It never seems to occur to him that the alleged anti- Jewish sentiment could have been whipped up precisely because the Bronfmans made such a big deal of their religion/heritage solely to cover up their ways. That most of the people they dealth with and enriched were also Jewish thugs doesn't help. Mr. Faith's inability to deal with this fact almost ruins the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but starting to show it's age
This book has great, detailed information about writing and publishing your family history.I recommend it to anyone who is considering tackling such an effort.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful resource for would-be family history publishers
All genealogists do research on their families, but not all publish the results of their work. Those who do publish would do well to read this book first. Hatcher is a CG and a technical writer and editor by profession, who also has self-published a number of volumes and co-authored _Indexing Family Histories._ Here, she explains the basics of book design for the novice, lays out a number of options in organizing family information for the printed page, and leads the reader through the questions of style, structure, and documentation. She also offers advice in the creation of camera-ready art and photographs and in dealing with subsidy publishers. And in no case does she claim to know the *only* way to accomplish the readers goals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great guide to pruducing a family history
This book contains a wealth of information on writing and publishing a family history. I'm glad that I read it before I started, as it enabled me to structure and format properly. I would have hated to go back and do it properly. This manual covers many aspects of family history writing, including publishing options that you may want to explore before commencing the actual writing and formatting, so you are better prepared in the end. It answered many questions I had, and some I was bound to come across later. I recommend this manual to anyone who is considering writing a family history, even if you plan to publish at some distant date. The info is exceptionally helpful, and if a question is not answered the book, it gives specific reference to where you can obtain yet more detailed info. It did not answer every question I had, but it did answer most, and pointed me to the answers in other cases. This should be mandatory reading for anyone considering writing a quality family history. It is prominently placed in my work area for reference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Timeless Classic By One Of The Best Biographers In History
Plutarch in his "Lives Of The Noble Grecians And Romans" written around 100 C.E., sheds new light on Greek and Roman history from their Bronze Age beginnings, shrouded in myth, down through Alexander and late Republican Rome.Plutarch is the lens that we use today to view the Greco-Roman past; his work has shaped our perceptions of that world for 2,000 years.Plutarch writes of the rise of Roman Empire while Gibbon uses his scholarship to advance the story to write about its decline. He was a proud Greek that was equally effected by Roman culture, a Delphic priest, a leading Platonist, a moralist, educator and philosopher with a deep commitment as a first rate writer.Being a Roman citizen, Plutarch was afforded the opportunity to become an intimate friend to prominent Roman citizens and a member of the literary elite in the court of Emperor Trajan.

3-0 out of 5 stars Slow Going
For all the exalted reputation Lady Antonia Fraser enjoys as a historian and writer, I expected this work to be far more informative and entertaining than it actually was.Despite her fascinating subject, Lady Fraser manages to flog it to death with endless historical references, obscure citations and literary allusions.I found the text to be so cluttered up and bogged down with arcane details and research notes that the actual subject matter was obscured by the author's very erudition. In a word: BORING.I hoped that after determinedly slogging through two opening chapters of explication and introduction, the body of the book pertaining to the fascinating women selected to represent history's Warrior Queens would pick up speed and capture my fast fading interest.Nope.Ponderous at best, the writing never seems to catch fire and I found myself hoping the next chapter would be better than the one I was reading. This is slow going and fails to reward the reader who actually gets through it.The last chapter of "summation" just repeats quotations and points made throughout the main text.Very disappointing and far from Lady Fraser's best effort. This more closely resembles the senior thesis of a graduate who has spent too much time in the library than the sparkling historical depiction of female political and military leaders throughout time which I was hoping to find.

5-0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER WINNER FROM ONE OF THE BEST HISTORIANS EVER
Antonia Fraser superbly writes about Boadicea of Great Britain, Catherine the Great of Russia, Elizabeth the First of England, Queen Isabella of Spain, the Rani of Jhansi, and the obscure Queen Jinga of Angola. All are delineated with grace and fervour and this book is another welcome addition to the opus of Lady Antonia Fraser. It is very highly recommended.
4-0 out of 5 stars Decent historical analysis
This is not a pop-history book. I picked this book up expecting it to be a very easy read but was surprised when I found myself reading through a book that would not have been out of place in any of my college history courses. Fraser has painted a very fascinating picture of various warrior queens around the world. Though at times, the narrative drags through her meticulous statement of facts, that is to be expected. I was very disappointed at her omission of the Egyptian pharaoh-queen Hatshepsut, however. Nevertheless, the women that she picks to include in her analysis make up a very good overview of the various warrior queens throughout the world and through time. It was an extremely interesting read and I would recommend it for anyone who has an interest in historical women as well as the the patience to read a (mostly) scholarly work. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing to get excited about
Susan Orlean, notable to most as a writer for The New Yorker, became the literary "It" girl in 2003 with the help of the movie "Adaptation" (the movie based on her book The Orchid Thief). In an attempt to capitalize on that book, "Bullfighter..." was released.
2-0 out of 5 stars vastly overrated
Look at the cover of this book and you'll see who and what it's really about. It's all about SO; her subject matter is irrelevant both to her and, consequently, to the reader.Worse, even her style, which seems to sucker in a lot of poeple, is not exactly her own.If you want to read what she's read, and cribbed from, track down a copy of Mr. Personality, by Mark Singer, also a New Yorker writer but a far finer one.Really, I don't see how SO can pass MS in the NYer's hallways and not hide her head in shame.Singer is by far the more human writer. He reserves his style for his short Talk of the Town pieces, drifting it to the side for his longer, more important pices.Unlike SO, he knows when to take it down a notch in order to add some real heart and feeling to his writing.SO's stuff, from one story to the next, is stylistically the same beginning to end.Half.com often has copies of Singer's book. When you find it, be sure to check out what's on the cover; it ain't a picture of Singer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Non-fiction at its finest
Like her predecessor Joan Didion, Susan Orlean writes of the wide range of human experience--from a traveling gospel group in the South to a budding basketball star--and in doing so presents a portrait of America that is both comprehensive and engaging. What's even better is that she does it without ever being sentimental.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Be sure you get the third edition
The third edition of this work is definitely the best.It contains the index to the entire 28 volumes in the series, which covers every county in Ireland. The second edition was published earlier, and does not contain the complete index to the series. The third edition has all the family history information from the second edition, PLUS the complete series info. This book contains the largest collection of Irish Family Names, locations and arms ever put to print.

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid and accessibly presented genealogical reference
Now in an expanded and updated third edition, The Book Of Irish Families Great & Small by genealogy expert Michael C. 2-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Equals Too Little
I had high hopes for this book when I ordered it along with the author's books for Waterford and Cork. I was disappointed with all of them. In trying to create such an all-encompassing book, the author has published a work that fails to provide much information on any particular family. And he manages to leave out valuable information. For example, in his book "Families of County Cork" he gives a very short paragraph about the Sherlock family being there, but fails to mention in this "Irish Families" book that the family is found in Cork, even though the Cork book was published first.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential for all American genealogists
Since its first edition in 1972, and especially with the completely revised and greatly expanded 2nd edition in 1990, this comprehensive work has become the standard guide and textbook in the pursuit of U.S. genealogical research. Beginning with the background to research -- what "research" actually means, specialized terminology, basic principles, library fundamentals, and all the rest -- Greenwood teaches you, with great clarity and many examples, how to identify what information you need, how to go about locating it, and how to organize it once you've found it. The second, much larger part of the book, leads the reader through the use, analysis, and interpretation of all the major sorts of documents and records out there: Compiled sources (including a discussion of the nature of compilations), vital records, census returns, wills and probate records (and how to become comfortable with legal terminology), local and federal land records, civil and criminal court records, church records, records relating to immigration, military records, and cemetery and burial records. He discusses the nature of abstracting, clears up common misconceptions about court records, points out the limitations of the census, and presents a largely rewritten discussion of the standards of evidence. When the 2nd edition came out a decade ago, the author thought his book would probably never need another major revision, just minor updates. But that was before the personal computer and Internet revolutions forced him to rethink his position, and this edition includes an entirely new and rather lengthy chapter on the appropriate use of the computer in genealogical research and also on its built-in limitations. He also took the opportunity to add a chapter on the legal issues relating to women's property rights, and (of course) made all those minor corrections and updates he had expected. Bluntly, if you can afford only one how-to book for your home genealogy shelf, get this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars BASIC BUT EFFECTIVE
Everyone seems to agree that this book is the standard text in genealogical research. The reason for this is the inclusion of sufficient detail to be useful without sacrificing scope and breadth of coverage.Prior editions gave short shrift to the computer revolution in genealogy. The third edition remedies this. Why not five stars? The writing fails to inspire.Granted this is a textbook on a sometimes dry and technical topic. The author also provides the right approach to the topic by focusing on story telling, basic research and avoiding beginners pitfalls. But I am still looking for the genealogy book that takes the topic to a high level.Genealogy is not just about correct principles, accurate research or even the stories that Val Greenwood encourgages us to write.Genealogy is about identity, individual, familial and national. If we are satisfied merely to explore our curiosity and to get the facts straight, then this is a dead science. No one seems more qualified than Val Greenwood to lead us into this deeper meaning.Perhaps a next edition or thinner separte volume will take us there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for basic library genealogy collections.
An excellent reference recommended for libraries building basic collections on genealogy. Val Greenwood's Researcher's Guide To American Genealogy, 3rd Edition provides important updated links between computersand genealogical research, including chapters on property rights of women, new insights on the evaluation of genealogical evidence, and updatedinformation on the 1020 census. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, unique names
After searching three other baby name books (that each boasted 20,000 names or more - one even had more than 50,000 from around the world) and finding nothing that worked for our first child, I borrowed this book from a friend and found the perfect name. The name my husband and I chose wasn't in any of the other books. The same thing happened to the friend who lent me The Name Book - she has never found her first-born's name in another baby name book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Name Book
This book is comprehensive in its information, but does not try to be the same as other books with information about proper names.I appreciate the genderless organization, just alphabetical listings, with alternate spellings and nick-names included. Each name has the origin, although I found a few of them to be different from the expected and usual. The meanings and scripture associated with the names are the driving reason for my purchase of this book.I plan to use it as a teaching tool with my students, encouraging them with the meaning and scriptures for their names.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This is a great book that I have used over and over! Even after picking my baby's name; I still refer to it!! It has over 10,000 names with meanings and orgins PLUS a great spiritual and bible reference for each name!
