4-0 out of 5 stars Feldman does it again!
As a kid, asking inumerable "stupid" questions was sure to get a weary "Go look it up" from a parent. Unfortunately, as a kid, I didn't have the innumerable resources at the fingertips of the Imponderables crew. As always, David Feldman and his team of information hunters have compiled questions from all over, some of which kept me going until I read the answer!
4-0 out of 5 stars Everything You've Ever Wanted to Know..And Then Some
Do Penguins Have Knees? is a great book with a great concept. It answers all of life's little imponderables that you always wanted to know the answer to but never knew who to ask.The questions range from, "Why do cats like to be scratched behind the ears?" to "How did they keep beer cold in the Old West?".In the back of the book are Frustables (Imponderables that have not been solved), a Frustable update (new answers to old Frustables), an index to this book, and an index to all of the other Imponderables book. Why someone would put all of that in a book beats me.You look at the big book only to find that 1/3 is spent on things other than Imponderables (such as the complete index to all of the books, which I think is a stupid idea). The only flaw in this book is that there might even be too much information. They give you the answer and they keep rambling on. Some of the answers took up 2-3 pages when they had answered the Imponderable on the first page. Also, all of the names and places where they come from, for example: Bob Smith from the University of Learning Things in Yourtown, USA, seemed to clutter up the page and take away from the answer.I think this book had a great concept, but with a poor format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pondering the Imponderables
The author has a good formula going here.He takes an offbeat question and consults various experts, coming up with a plausible answer. Most of these I never would have thought to ask, but I still found myself intrigued by the answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Answering life's deeper questions...
The Imponderables book series by David Feldman is the pinnacle of interesting and useful bathroom reading! Since the beginning of the series, Feldman has been highlighting questions that we didn't even know we had (like exactly why is it that a mile is 5,280 feet? and where is Donald Duck's brother?) then he finds "the experts" on any given subject to answer the question. At the end of each question and answer, you are left with a little better insight into the world around you (and you can go out and impress your friends with an expanded catalog of obscure anecdotes). 4-0 out of 5 stars How Does it Know it's Not my Toe?
Here's another installment of the"Imponderables" series, which, the jacket explains, find the answers to the conundrums over which, whether you realize it or not, you have been obsessing since your very beginning. Such as:5-0 out of 5 stars a blast to read and share with others
All of Feldman's "Why Do" books are a blast. You cannot help but read them out loud to who ever is listening. Alot of fun for older kids. He even asks for help solving some of the unsolved questions. And he acceptsquestions for future books.Read more

I found this really interesting to read; however, many of the answers seemed not enough.Filled my head with lots of useless trivia none the less.

This book is a lot of fun and it is possible to actually have some thing in it tat you did not know. However the statements or answers are limited in scope requiring you to do further research to flesh out the answer. The answers are given by contributors, not Davis Feldman. So we must rely of the credibility of the contributor. Again because of the limited answer the contributor does not feel compelled to back you the reason for the statement.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for teen boy
This was a great gift for my teenage boy who asks a million questions about all sorts of things!

4-0 out of 5 stars This is not "Imponderables Ten". It's book one under a new title.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's not a new book, just a new title!
Ok, let me say this- the IMPONDERABLES series of books, by David Feldman, is a great series. They offer answers to many of Life's odd question, the one you ponder over, but can't just look up somewhere.Well, until now.

1-0 out of 5 stars A great book that you might not want to buy
This- along with all the other Imponderables Titles by David Feldman- is chock full of fascinating trivia and answers to many of Lifes little questions. If you have never read any of these Imponderable books before, I highly recommend it. However- if you are a fan of these books- you likely would be wasting your money. Why? becuase this is "When did Wild Poodles Roam the Earth" retitled, much as "Imponderables" itself- the 1st book in the series is now "Why Don't Cats Like to Swim?".

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reading When You Have Nothing Else To Do
Provides interesting information on a number of topics that you never realized you needed to know - like "Why do horses in an open field always seem to stand head to tail?"Then there's "Why do roaches always die on their backs?"And "Why do women in the U.S. shave their armpits?"

"When do Fish Sleep" is a book of "Imponderables" (a term invented by the author meaning a question that cannot be answered by conventional means of reference books, calculations, or tangible means such as measuring). An example of an imponderable is "Why don't birds tip over when they sleep on a telephone wire?" or the like the title, "When do fish sleep?"

This was a awesome book I read. I found it when we were cleaning the basement, and I read most of it on a trip. It is a book that answers many interesting questions as in "Why is Bettie Rubble not a charator in the Filnstones Vitimans?" I hope you pick this or another "Imponderables" book.

4-0 out of 5 stars As a fiction reader, I still enjoyed the things this book.
This book teaches you lots of interesting stuff, and asks lots of interesting stuff. We never thought we would never get the answers. However, David Feldman got them for us.HOORAY!I could have gave it 5stars, since it was a very interesting things that helped me help otherswith imponderables, and taught me stuff that was head-scratching.Read more

This book is full of interesting things to read about, but it suffers from the fact that the answers to the questions are only given a superficial amount of research, or are purely speculation. It is fun to read as long as you don't take the answers too seriously, and is in the same vein as the Urban Legend web sites (such as snopes.com) and newspaper columns (such as Ask Cecil) which delve into obscure trivia on everyday things. 5-0 out of 5 stars No technical jargen!
I've purchased books like this in the past and they give origins of words and technical terms that I just don't find interesting. This book, however, was not like that at all!It is intellegently written but easy to understand and relate to.It actually answers the questions and has humourous overtones. There are also fun sections called: Frustables, and Letters.Read more

This wonderful book is one of David Feldman's Imponderables Books, in which he raises questions that few have ever asked before, and then goes out and finds the answers. Among the questions asked are "When does a bill become a beak on a bird?" "Why do pianos have 88 keys?" And "Do identical twins have identical fingerprints and DNA?"

And why do we kiss under mistletoe? And why are blueprints blue? I can think of no other book which is brave enough to answer these questions. Fans of the other "Imponderables" books will not be disappointed by this one, as it is similar in nature to the rest of the series. Readers who have never before delved into the realm of Imponderables are also in for a treat. "Why Do Dogs Have Wet Noses?" is light, clever, and just plain funny. However, I must warn you that you may possibly learn something from it. If there are odd little things in your day-to-day existence that puzzle you, then this might be the book for you. It does not answer life's major mysteries, but it does a wonderful job of answering the little ones. Do you wonder what the 'Q' stands for in Q-tip? Have you pondered whether cats have navels? Do you puzzle over why there is a worm in the bottom of some tequila bottles? Have you questioned why there are no purple Christmas lights? I could go on and on, but you get the idea. These little imponderables, and many more, are collected here in one volume from three of David Feldman's earlier out-of-print books. 5-0 out of 5 stars Plan on sleepless nights because you can't put it down.
David Feldman has yet another winner with this book.Personally I have loved his Imponderables books and this is the largest collection to date. What are Imponderables?Well, to be brief, they are the questions that everyone seems to ask at one time or another, but would not have the first idea where to find the answer. For example, why do weather thermometers use red mercury and medical thermometers use red mercury? Why are peanuts listed under the ingredients of plain M&Ms?Can one spider get stuck in the web of another one? While the questions are trivial this is not like traditional trivia.Among other things, my trivia books are always where I left them.People pick it up read a few and put it down. Then later they may pick it up again and read a few more. With this book I have a hard time keeping track of where the book is located.People pick it up read a few, can't put it down and take it with them to another room.By the couch, by the chair, in a bedroom, in the kitchen, in the bathroom, who knows where it ends up?Part of the fun is also being a child again. The questions are the same kind of things that children ask when they are innocent and not afraid to ask questions about anything.Get in touch with the child inside you and ask the questions that you wouldn't ask anymore as an adult.... Do Penguins have knees? ... Read more
