2-0 out of 5 stars A real disappointment
When I saw that this dictionary was based on "American English", I was excited to get it.But save your money, or, better yet, use it to buy the Oxford Russian Dictionary. You can easily cope with British spelling (e.g. centre) and you'll find a much more useful dictionary.I find it remarkable that a modern (1994) dictionary purporting to be based on American English completely omits words such as "Internet", "download", "e-mail", to say nothing of all the acronyms associated with computers.Incidentally, you can find them all in the Oxford!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very great
To put it one way, my russian professor, who is from Moldova, said that she would start using this disctionary. It is based off american english, which does make it more helpful. In the front pages gives most all of the rules of conjugating by the case, and the back appendix gives alot of proper nouns in russian. Its a really good dictionary to use, easy (heavy!), and very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than expected
This book is a lot bigger, and better than I had expected it to be. I thought it was a smaller, pocket-ish dictionary. But, it is a good sized, 1100 page book. There are plenty of definitions. This is a high quality book. Worth every dime.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great way to learn a 6th language
I already speak English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and have studied Latin.I bought a Berlitz book some years back and tried to use it to study Russian but soon gave up.It was a good thing, too.The Pimsleur course taught me that the Berlitz book was teaching the WRONG PRONUNCIATION for at least half the words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn to Speak!!
Fabulous program for actually learning how to SPEAK the language. To get full benefit from the course you should repeat the lessons several times to have them ingrained in you memory. The lessons are very well done. They are systematically progressive. They slowly add additional material whileconstantly reusing material from prior lessons that forces you recall what you have learned. This ingrains the material into your memory for practical use, not just memorization. The best part about this course is it is a truly a speaking course. You learn to pronounce correctly. I have had many native Russian speakers compliment me over and over about my pronunciation having little or no accent, which I credit to this course. ... Read more

This is great for English language learners. It's organized by sections and is easy to understand. The only drawback is it's ehtnocentric towards the USA and this wouldnt be good for english learners living in Britain.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good reference.
Schaum's Outline of Russian Grammar is good reference for a 1st year Course in Russian. The subject is explained clearly and the contents are well indexed. Given the extensiveness of the subject further studyt would require more specialized texts.

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific, fun supplement
I recently bought this book along with the New Penguin Russian Course, and the two complement each other very well. The way the Schaum's Outline of Russian Grammar is set up, you could use it with just about any type of Russian lessons, but I think it would be particularly helpful with conversation heavy systems like Pimsleur or Immersion method. The concepts are presented matter of fact and the exercises are very useful to use as self-drill.The overall layout, from a "this is how we'll break down the grammar rules" perspective is also very easy to understand, without skimping on the complexity of certain issues like verb aspect, or uses of the conditional mood, or irregular case endings. It even has stress marks (inexplicably omitted from Schaum's Vocabulary Outline) which are certainly the most important thing after learning the alphabet in terms of learning Russian pronunciation and intonation. Also, there are many explanation of shades of meaning implied by slight changes in grammatical usage. This book has been so helpful and useful that I just can't imagine a serious Russian student, particulary a do-it-yourselfer, not having it on hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good practice
I started using Schaum's Outline of Russian Grammar after I already knew the basics of Russian grammar and found it very useful. One of the difficulties with Russian grammar is remembering all the rules and applying them correctly. This book is ideal for practice as it contains hundreds of grammar exercises with answers. The author, James S. Levine, begins each section of the book with a clear explanation of the grammar point to be studied. The exercises then test the learner's understanding of this point. The key to using the book successfully is to do all the exercises. This requires a certain amount of discipline, as it has to be said, this is a fairly dull book. There are no stories and no pictures, just grammar and more grammar. It is for this reason that I would not recommend this book for someone who has no knowledge of Russian at all. Moreover, although all aspects of Russian grammar are covered thoroughly including the basics, Levine often assumes the reader already has a reasonable Russian vocabulary and has a fair grasp of Russian sentence structure. A complete beginner would find doing some of the exercises almost impossible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Duel language books provide a gift of reading for Russian friends
This book is a wonderful rare find.I am a friend/neighbor of highly educated recent Russian immigrants with limited expertise in English. Although they are taking English classes, it is almost impossible for them to find interesting books to read in English beyond those of a childrens book reading level. Having to use a Russian/English dictionary while reading eliminates a lot of the simple pleasures that reading provides. This book's dual language format is absolutely perfect. They can finally enjoy a book written in English that reflects their reading interests due to the fact that the exact Russian version resides on the opposing page. This dual language format is also an absolutely perfect tool for English students learning the Russian language. It gave me so much pleasure to provide them with this opportunity to both practice and better enjoy reading books in English. I only wish that there were a lot more books available in this style for my friends to enjoy....

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect language learning tool.
That's what this is, the perfect language learning tool for a student of the russian language, with one or two years of college level russian who wants to continue their study of the language. I would be surprised if universities did not use this text for intermediate level students. The only thing more that I could wish for would be an audio version of this book, which would help me to consolidate, and strengthen the knowledge it gave me, by allowing me to listen to the stories it contains in Russian, as well as being able to read them.

This book is ok to augment your other language course, which should include a cd, dvd or cassette. Without that you wonmt understand how to pronounce anything. I found teh stickers useful as I wanted to be able to read russian rather than just 'parrot' it. whle i agree with most of the negative reviews I did find myself referring to this book quite often, BUT i also own teh pimsleur and 'in your car' russian cds. If this came with a CD it would be great.
2-0 out of 5 stars 10 minutes a day, everyday for the next 30 years...
Be wary of any Russian course that promises quick, effortless results.Learning Russian grammar is like putting together a 5000 piece jigsaw puzzle. Without a picture, it's pretty tedious. This book will not help you get "the picture". It teaches 1st/2nd conjugation verbs and a couple of necessary irregular verbs, but that's all the grammar you get.You do get some basic vocabulary words, but not ones that will help you very far in conversational situations. If you are a traveler and need a crash course to survive your trip through Russia, a good phrase book will better serve you. Finally, I have no idea why this book is called "10 minutes a day", there is no plan of attack included to tell you how to meter your studying, and 10 minutes is a little short to get something like Russian to sink into your brain.

2-0 out of 5 stars Big book, pretty pictures, not much to learn.
This book might be okay for kids, but it's not really a serious learning tool.Learning a language in ten minutes a day may be a fun fantasy, but the resources available in this book won't do much to help you learn Russian.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful without dialogue text of CDs!
Although I agree that Pimsleur's Russian I,II and III CD sets are a great way to quickly learn to speak and understand spoken Russian, I am constantly frustrated by the lack of the written text of these dialogues!Surely, for the price we have to pay for these CD sets, we are entitled to a text copy of what the Russian speakers are saying on all of the CDs!!Why doesn't Pimsleur provide the text??They already have it in-house (for the Russian speakers to read from) and should make it available to those of us who need to learn to read the Russian text as we are learning the Russian phonetic sounds.

5-0 out of 5 stars A godsend for the busy language enthusiast
I am a high school student who decided last year to learn Russian, and no program has come even remotely close to Pimsleur, when it comes to helping me in real life situations, and practical vocabulary.I had completed a few beginner's written courses, and dabbled in the living language complete course, but when school started up again, I found myself without adequate time to effectively live up to a time commitment on the all-consuming and grammar intensive written courses. After this study, I found myself able to read simple passages, and string together sentences, but I lacked the seamless spoken ability that I wanted. It was around this time that I tried pimsleur for an introduction to Japanese, and fell in love with it.I immediately got the Russian level 2 course, and now I don't have to sit at my desk after my homework is done, and can just sit in my armchair, and pop in a tape. This course works completely different than any drill, and is so pervasive and effective that I am finding myself having trouble with oral practice in spanish class, becuase of the instinct to speak Russian that this course provides so well.Since then it has been a godsend, helping me actually put to use the vocabulary I had learned, and taking a whole new approach to grammar.I am now able to have real, meaningful conversations with Russian speaking teachers and kids at my school, and I would recommend Pimsleur whole-heartedly to anyone who is serious about attaining real and useful spoken language skills, but is very busy. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not good if you're going to Russia
I just got back from Russia and this book sucks.Russian Language is very difficult, but it has distinct patterns within the grammer that can easily be picked up if the instuction manual shows them. This book is just a book of rules without showing the patterns, which I felt made learning the language more difficult.

I began trying to teach myself Russian (key word: "trying") about 3 years ago, and of all the purely written helps, this is by far the best I've purchased.I very much like its pace:I feel challenged by the exercises, but not so overwhelmed that I want to toss the book out the window (believe me, my neighbors are beginning to wonder about that growingpile of other "Teach Yourself [insert language of your choice here]" in the backyard)."Russian Course" also keeps things interesting by throwing in things the anglophone might be interested in (see title), as well as things one might encounter in the post-Soviet Russia (that pizzeria for which Mikhail Gorbachev once did an advertisement, e.g.).

4-0 out of 5 stars Good customer service but slow delivery
It took nearly a month to receive the item, but they were very good at responding to my inquiries.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helping you decide if this is the best for you.
I would like to clarify some points mentioned below by other reviewers. First of all it is true that the Russian pronunciation is not given, but neither is it given in any other English-Russian dictionary that I know of, or, for that matter, in any Russian dictionary. This is because in Russian each sound is pronounced like it is written. So basically you have to learn the Russian alphabet. So this is not for real beginners. One can't blame the dictionary for this because it was created as an aid, not a teaching course. Still there are some grammatical rules you'll have to learn if you want to pronounce the Russian words correctly, not too difficult rules in my opinion. Basically it all comes down to the accent (very simple stuff). I will resist giving you examples and instead I will give you the websites where you can learn for yourself. If one wants to learn Russian from scratch (or almost from scratch) I recommend that he visits these two websites. They are free and they should be useful if the person wants to know if he really wants to pursue learning Russian before spending money on books, it will help him decide whether he is sure that he is serious about this.

2-0 out of 5 stars Limited Use
After two semesters of using this book it is my opinion that it is only useful for students who already speak the language but need grammar reinforcement.Even though there are many exercises in the manual and a workbook to accompany the material, there are no answers in either the manual or the workbook to verify that you have done the exercises correctly. In many cases, when I developed answers from examples in the dialogs in the book and tried to verify them with Russian friends, the typical response was "well, technically, its correct ... but we don't talk that way".
1-0 out of 5 stars A stupid book
The only people who should get this book are people who are forced to because their school uses it. It is poorly planned and hard to find topics that you want to review. The worst part about this book is that it has no answers to the exercises in it making it usless for anyone wanting to advance at their own pace or for self studiers or even know if they are on the right track! I highly reccomend this book for anyone looking to learn Russian. It's easy to understand, and very elementary in its methods.I feel that you should take a class while reading this book, because there are a few words that Golosa will slip in that they don't specifically introduce.Good luck learning a new language! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars good words, bad printing
I am studying Russian in advance of a vacation I plan this summer; I am using a combination of tapes, software (useless by itself), books, primer, and a Russian aquaintance at work. I got this book because it was inexpensive, small, and contained both an excellent selection of words and some of the grammatical concepts. Unfortunately, it suffers from poor paperback quality printing. The low end paper used for the pages allowed some ink seepage; this makes the Cyrillic script, which I am still mastering, difficult to read in some places particularly when it comes to distinguishing the lower case forms of "na" (looks like an H only smaller) and "yi" (looks like a backwards N).
    4-0 out of 5 stars it's a dictionary
This is a good dictionary, especially if you are studying russian language in a school type setting. In response to some of the somewhat negative reviews, this is a dictionary and not meant to teach the language but as a tool to expand vocabulary, which it can do just fine. For travelers who just want to learn a few words and phrases to get around, there are a few travel guides out there with easy phonetically spelled words. I've had this dictionary for 4 semesters and hasn't let me down yet. It is almost time to upgrade to a more advanced version but this a great supplement to use while studying the language. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holy crap...
I lived in the Russian Far East (on Sakhalin if anyone cares) for a while when I was still in high school on foreign exchange, and this was just about the only thing I took with me (stupidly) besides clothes, a couple of books, and Kraft mac and cheese. By the time I went home it had been thrown up on, fallen in mud puddles deeper than I am tall, been run over by a Kamaz truck, was signed by the legendary Vyacheslav Butusov (I love Nautilus) and looked up possibly a trillion words before the back cover finally fell off.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Russian Text Book
This is easily the best Russian text book I have seen. The explainations are clear and the charts well laid out.The dialogues are challenging and interesting for any beginner. This is not dumbed down at all yet still easily understood. There is no audio, so if you are a true beginner, it won't do.In that case, get a tutor and use this book together.
5-0 out of 5 stars A complete Russian grammar course
I am a Baptist missionary serving in Russia. I used this book when I studied Russian language here in the university. I started study at age 39, with no previous experience in any foreign language. When I completed this textbook, I had a comprehensive working knowledge of Russian grammar. With a few years of practice, I became quite fluent. Later I used this book to teach my family to speak Russian, after tutors failed to make any progress with them. This book is complete, interesting, and very effective. If you will just go through this book page by page and work every exercise on every page, you will have a complete working knowledge of Russian grammar. You will also learn a lot along the way about Russian history, literature, geography, and culture. I have bought a lot of Russian textbooks, and most of them are basically a waste of time. This one is the real deal!
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Russian language book
After buying a number of other books on Russian, this is DEFINITELY the best one.Too bad its not currently available to order. If you are a begining to the Russian language than this is the book to have.It has everything from diagrams of the mouth to help with pronounciation, to a short picture dictionary, to great exercises - AND an answer key. A must have. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nothing can make Russian easy for a late starter
I got a lot for my money - more Russian lessons than I will be able to master.I am a 65 year old rank beginner! Russian has sounds none of the other languages I know have. It is daunting. I loaded Learn In Your Care Russian CD's into my Ipod so they go everywhere with me and after 4 weeks i am up to lesson 6!But the pronunciation comes through very clearly on these CDs.I'm afraid that the local speakers in different parts of Russia have very different accents.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Not a course.Just a reading of a Russian-English dictionary
If you or someone you know is interested in learning Russian, and you want to kill that passion, this is an ideal package to purchase. Not only has this course made me less interested in Russian, its made me less interested in life in general. It's honestly that bad.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor excuse for instruction
This program is hardly worth the price or time.It presents the language in a disjointed, illogical, unstructured, non-intuitive way.Basically, they rattle off an Engligh word (spoken by a male) or phrase once then the Russian version twice (spoken by a female), then on to a new word or phrase. They never explain anything or build upon what's been used. And there is no variety in the Russian speakers to further train the ear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good all around
You get twenty lessons. Each one starts with a dialog that's
5-0 out of 5 stars A good foundation.
This book and CD set is a good introduction to the Russian language.Ignore the other reviewer's remark that the lessons "don't reflect a particular learning theory".Good language lessons don't have to reflect one particular theory. The book contains clearly laid-out lessons and grammar explanations, and the dialogues, vocabulary and grammar talks on the CDs are very well recorded.Slavic languages like Russian are so complex that it's hard for English speakers to learn them without being socially immersed in the language to some degree, so after studying with this or any other Russian self-teaching program alone, you may not be able to talk yet. However, if you finish this program you will have enough of a foundation that once you are in a social setting you should see your speaking skills improve rapidly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Living Language Ultimate Russian Advanced
The course contains dialogues which are poorly translated from Russian to English. Also, the structure of the lessons do not reflect a particular learning theory.A teacher could make the program work, but I doubt that anyone has ever learned Russian on their own using the Ultimate Russian Program. Language is a social activity. I doubt that anyone can learn a language without interacting with others. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This dictionary gives the serious student a powerful tool.
The Oxford Russian-English Dictionary was my first real dictionary as a Russian Language student. Taking advice from a personal hunch I bought the book before I ever stepped into a university lesson in Russian about threeand a half years ago. This dictionary has served me extremely wellparticularly in terms of translations excercises. I personally considerthis dictionary to be a fabulous reference tool for anyone student orprofessor serious about the study of Russian with a focus on finding themost authoritative and accurate translation of over 80,000 words and/orphrases from Russian to English. Please consider purchasing thisdictionary if you speak English as a native language and truly are seriousabout your studies of Russian. The only drawback to this dictionary comesfrom the fact that it forces the user to have a good sense of the meaningthat he or she is after since it provides such a huge variety on certaintranslations from Russian to English which is quite understandableconsidering the difficulty in what many term {comparitive linguistics} i.e. (word to word) translation.I hope that anyone who wants to add tohis or her vocabularly will consider purchasing this dictionary for Ibelieve that it will help tremendously with this endeavor.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for early study
This book will help early students (mid first semester) students develop reading confidence and to get a feel for how the language is used in very elementary texts, such as journals, etc.4-0 out of 5 stars An easy introductory reader to Russian, but it's quite short
Useful for building up your reading confidence for very beginners. The first couple of texts are extremely simple, and all of them only use the present tense.I found the end-dictionary comprehensive enough for my use, although it didn't include some words from the Exercises that follow the texts, which is an unfortunate oversight. You will go through this book quite quickly though.I much preferred the slightly more difficult "Beginner's Russian Reader" by Lila Pargment since it is useful much longer, but is more difficult when you are first beginning. Its also unfortunately a bit difficult to find in the US for some reason although very easy to get in the UK where I purchased it.

4-0 out of 5 stars not too bad
This book is definately a 'first reader', as it is quite simple. All the text is in present tense. I do not mind this, but the thing that I find most wrong with the book is that it has a dictionary in back that ostensibly contains all words necessary for reading the passages, but in reality contains about 50% of them. This only means that one must look the words up in another dictionary. But at the same time, there are some words that have multiple meanings, and you look them up in a seperate dictionary, and will not be able to glean any meaning from a sentence. But overall, I have found this book to be very helpful. ...
