5-0 out of 5 stars Spanish in 10 Minutes a Day
This text is either for the very beginning beginner or a good review for the person who has been away from Spanish for a time.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good Start
I have read almost all of the book. Along with the CDs I think the set would be very good for a beginner but not enough for adequate conversation. No conjugation rules mentioned. You have to be enrolled in a spanish teaching class to fill in the defecits that this set have. Overall I think my spanish improved alot from 0% spanish to 50% now, which is not bad to a beginner....

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Product
We are a homeschooling family and we were looking for a good beginning Spanish program. This program was recommended to me by several people so I thought we would give it a try.My daughter and I are learning together and we are finding this program easy to use and alot of fun.I think it would be a great program for older elementary (my daughter is 14) - adult. The CDs are a must because they teach you the correct pronouncation for each word. The stickers are a great way to incorporate Spanish into your everyday life. Excellent program. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to learning Spanish for educational purposes and for those who are planning a trip to a Spanish speaking country. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome- A Real Keeper
After getting ripped off by Living Language, Berlitz and Learn in Your Car Portuguese, this is an awesome breath of fresh air.
    5-0 out of 5 stars Great Course/Great Price/Great Results
As I have stated in earlier reviews for other Language Dynamics products, these courses are the best on the market for getting you to speak a language fast and without the hassle.
1-0 out of 5 stars OVER PRICED and POORLY PRODUCED
I have happily used many different forms of audio language products, including the very professional "Learn in Your Car" series.Sadly, "Behind the Wheel Protuguese" was an extreme disappointment. The set is very poorly designed and manufactured.Indeed, it feels like a home-made recording:the CDs skip and stick (other CDs in the same equipment do not, so it is not my equipment!), the sound quality rises and falls, and the times for student response or participation fluctuate widely -- in relation to neither the difficulty of the lesson nor the number of words to be spoken. The set lacks a track guide, making it very difficult to find and go to the section one might wish to review.Another time-wasting feature: the lessons do not begin until over 4 minutes into the first track. The result is that learners must repeatedly listen to the (self-aggrandizing) introductory comments.(Ordinarily such info is limited to the 1st track of the CD so that it can be skipped on subsequent listenings.)The speech is not neutral but heavily accented -- which would be fine provided purchasers were made aware of this fact.In addition, the discs contain speech errors wherein the native speaker actually speaks incorrect words in response to promps! These errors NOT edited out but left entact; the listener can hear both the error, the speaker's upset apology, and the resulting whispered reassurance that "it's ok, don't worry."Of course, it's only possible to discover these flaws by opening the set and listening to it -- which means, of course, that it's no longer returnable.Hoping for a way around this I contacted the manufacturer and politely detailed my concerns.Their solution:I could pay to ship the set back to them and they would refund my money LESS a hefty service fee. The effect -- having already paid shipping to get the product from Amazon -- was that I could pay a sizeable chunk of cash for having had the 'opportunity' to listen to defective material! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good place to start
I am a native speaker trying to teach my hubby a few words for our trip to Brazil.I found the book very easy to use. Most nights he practiced by himself and I reviewed the material. He was able to get pretty good pronunciation using the books guidelines, but emphasis was harder. It think this is true anytime you are studying language through a book. The stickers were fun to use, we did label items around the house. After getting this book down we moved on to a CD ROM package which has been useful as well.My husband felt that the book did not do a very good job with teaching tenses and conjugating words. This is true, the books aim was to teach you useful phrases and words, you would still be limited in your ability to understand a native speakers anwers to your questions. However, after only one month he definitelty learned quite a bit.Even though I am fluent it is easier to work from a program, as learning from me is hit or miss, this way we have the basics covered.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great product
I enjoyed this book a lot. It is a great way for a beginner to pick up the basic words and phrases needed to communicate in Portuguese. When you actually follow the directions and spend the 10 minutes a day, you really pick up the language quickly! I like the way the book is written and found it easy to follow and understand. Great way to learn!

3-0 out of 5 stars Trying to Learn
This is a wonderful book if you are going to be in Brazil for a very short time. It is also a good beginner book. Unfortunately the pronunciations (esp at the end of words) is hard to understand. My husband is from Brazil and we will be going there soon. He had to correct me the majority of the time when I was pronouncing the words how this book has outlined how they should be pronounced. Overall it is a nice book but you might want need a tutor as well to get the sounds right. If you are going to be staying in Brazil for a longer time you will need a better book for sure. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars enjoyable BUT
I am halfway through the second set of Pimsleur CDs, and I admit that the Pimsleur method has kept my interest, and taught me some stuff BUT the arrorance of its authors, by providing virtually NO written materials, bothers me more every day.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pimsleur's the way to keep yourself motivated!
Pimsleur is the most painless way to learn the basics of a language and to get over the initial fears of speaking. It's the only language learning method I've found where I can stay motivated working on my own--no painful left-brain memorization or grammar, just lots of repetition until all you need for working travel Portuguese is tripping blithely off your tongue!

Half way through the rather expensive Pimsleur's Braz Portguese II, I was incresinglybothered by that method's refusal to directly set out the rules of grammar -- and it was clear that I needed a grammar book.I bought this book used and without the cassette, and still, I have really enjoyed it.It lays things out rather well, and was just what I (or any fool who bought Pimsleur) needs ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ESSENTIALREFERENCE
I bought this book because I wanted a list of all Portuguese verbs. Not only does it give a very comprehensive listing of verbs but contains as a starter a complete break down with examples of all of the verb tenses. I have never seen this before. Furthermore it highlights variations between Portuguese and Brasil spelligs. My partner is from Brasil and thinks the book is an invaluable source for her as well as for other Brasilianas. The book travels with me! Also included many other aspects of grammar explained very simply, and very good summary of contents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent like any other Barron's 501 Verbs
The title pretty much says it all. For those who consider this book as too heavy or unreadable, written by/for linguists etc. should probably reconsider the book's usage. A very effective way for learning any new language which is heavily based around the verb (like someone else already correctly put it), such as any latin/ roman language is by quite stupidly repeating verb conjugaisons. Even aloud ... even using signs gestures and what not. True, you should not use this as your only means, otherwise you get mad.

1-0 out of 5 stars Staggeringly Awful
Learning to use this book should not be as difficult as learning Portuguese. But it is.

1-0 out of 5 stars Major disappointment
I had expected a CD produced by Berlitz to employ sound teaching methods.Instead, there is as much English spoken on the CD as there is Portuguese. The Portuguese words and phrases are spoken once, so you have to keep "rewinding" if you want to actually learn anything.Unfortunately, that means you also have to keep hearing the same annoying English speaker telling you the obvious (such as stating that you can listen to the CD as many times as you'd like. )
2-0 out of 5 stars Berlitz PortuguesePhrase Book
A step above the Dover say it series, However this phrase book is not Brazil friendly especially the audio material, I think its odd that Berlitz would not have a Brazilian Portuguese phrase book. Like it does with the Latin american Spanish series. I recommend the Lonely Planet phrase book for Brazilian Portuguese.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book is better than the CD
The phrasebook was extremely helpful to carry around on my recent Portugal trip! The CD, however, just moves very fast from basic to difficult. I repeated the first 5 minutes over and over as a result. Still, a worthwhile investment.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great beginning language course for those long commutes
The Pimsleur series is very different from the other language CDs I have tried. It uses repetitive short conversations and sentences to intuitively learn grammar and structure without formally "thinking" about the grammar and structure. This approach is slow, but very effective. Each lesson is 30 minutes in length and gradually adds to the previous lesson. Other language CDs often just have you mimic and repeat different words or sentences over and over, which gets old fast. Pimsleur has you repeat the words a few times, but then asks you to recall them on your own, and puts them in context using short conversations where you ask and answer questions with an imaginary Brazilian woman sitting next to you (presumably at a bar). The Conversational series are just an introduction to PImsleur Level I courses, so you won't know much by the end of them, and will need to buy the full set (over $300). But if you aren't interested in learing formal grammar, then give the Conversational Brazilian Portuguese CDs a try before you invest in the full level I course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for assisting inbuilding a foundation
I am using this in conjunction with other sources. I listen to it to get a better grasp on pronunciation. However, I also purchased a good book (Portuguese in 10 minutes a day) as well. I tend to like underlining things and making notes etc, so for me a good book was a necessity; as well as reference material, such as a book of verbs, and a dictionary. I am close to halfway through the CDs and it is excellent for teaching you how to say certain phrases competently. But I want to learn more than canned questions and answers. Besides, if one has memorized the phrases and responses by rote, they would probably not be able to carry on a conversation if the subject matter changes. I intend to get a good grasp on the basics to begin with, and then proceed to an intermediary level, so I am using this CD series as well as some written material too.

4-0 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN MOST
This course is good and worth the price. The only reason that I didn't rate this 5 star is because you will need more than this course to feel confident. The additional lessons from PIMSLEUR are extremely expensive. I recommend PORTUGUESE IN 10 MINUTES a day (less than $20) and a basic Brazilian Portuguese course(often inexpensive or free). If you wish to go deeper into the language, get "501 Portuguese verbs" and "Essential Portuguese Grammer". Don't waste your money on the Lonely Planet Brazilian Portuguese Phrase Book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful
I just returned from a trip to Brazil, and though I know some Spanish, I had no previous exposure to Portuguese. This phrasebook proved invaluable in helping me bridge the gap, and contributed to me having an even better time, and blending in better with the locals.

3-0 out of 5 stars Passable
Beware of serious pronunciation errors in this book.Although it was overall pretty useful, there were some glaring errors in areas where there likely shouldn't have been.Case in point, the phonetic pronunciation for tchau (goodbye) in the book is spelled out as "tee-show."At least in Bahia, it was pronounced by the locals just like the Italian "ciao."The word "vinte" (twenty) is spelled out "veeng-te" in the book, while again everyone we encountered in Bahia pronounced it "veen-chay."I don't know if these are regional differences in Brazilian Portuguese, but if so, they need to at least be addressed in the book.Take care when using the phrasebook to listen to the local speakers as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Brazilian Portuguese phrase book I've found!
I'm just a lonely writer wanna-be in the heart of the middle of nowhere, so what do I choose to write -- a period piece of Brazil.I can't even begin to praise this book enough. Not only do I get phrases and words, but there are all sorts of little historical and cultural details.

5-0 out of 5 stars Abe Lincoln Laughed Heartily At This Book
In January 1864, Fred Seward, the son of Lincoln's Secretary of State, wrote of Lincoln and his young secretary, John Hay, walking over to the elder Seward's house one evening to share English As She Is Spoke.Once there, "As John Hay read aloud its queer inverted sentences, Lincoln and Seward laughed heartily, their minds finding a brief but welcome relief from care."
4-0 out of 5 stars What a crazy concept - a classic for fans of the truly unusual
Like a Seinfeld or I Love Lucy sitcom episode, the idea that you could write a book about the English language without being able to speak it - side splitting. I heard about this book on NPR and sought it for years. The hard cover was back ordered for a very long time so when the soft cover came my way, I grabbed it and went to the bath..err library.Funny stuff. Ironic, laughable, really silly and unique.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cultural insights along with language learning
I travel to Brazil a lot for business and pleasure, and I have bought other language-learning books for Portuguese--but this is the one book I take with me when I go.I like it for a lot of reasons---the slang and idioms, the section on Carnaval, the way it makes the hard work of learning a language fun and engaging.I felt like the author was more of an encouraging friend than a teacher. But I think I like it most of all because of the way it gives me insight into the Brazilian culture along with the language learning.
1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Pronunciation
I wanted to learn Brazilian Portuguese so I researched universities as to what they suggested. I found a highly respected program from Georgetown University, and some also suggested Rosetta Stone. I bought the Georgetown tape program, the Rosetta Stone computer program, a state department tape program and a Pimsleur CD program and I spoke with several people from Brazil and the pronunciation from all is much different from what is phonetically presented in this book. Get a different book if you want to know how to pronounce words.

5-0 out of 5 stars e bom demais
In the midst of my excitment preparing for my coming trip to Rio de Janiero, I was ecstatic to find "Portuguese for Dummies" in the language section of my favorite bookstore. What's even more amazing is that it focuses on Brazilian Portuguese.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun way to learn
Pimsleur audio CD for Portugese is great! Its so much fun to learn, the time would just fly by.Easy enough to listen to in the car, while cooking, or just relaxing. It gives the basics and really helps with pronunciation, which is so important when it comes to languages. Its a great way to start learning a language, and again, its so much fun!!

1-0 out of 5 stars No book study for a true beginer on learning a new language....
I don't know others but myself, a true beginer of Portuguese, really have no way to learn with just a audio CD even I am currently in Sao Paulo. By just listening I don't know a thing. Taking away all visual aid, the learning is so limited, especially you are helping yourself without a teacher by your side! My recommendation is to get a audio with book if you are a serious self learner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific
Larousse dictionaries are much, much better than any of the others. Bantam's are decent and Oxford's are ok, but you will get frustrated eventually if you are actually trying to speak the language. Their dictionaries for some reason seem very "regionally challenged." Only Larousse successfully includes a wide range of colloquialisms, is not afraid to publish the naughty words (which you will definitely hear), and manages to make the dictionary portable, readable, and affordable. I really like this dictionary.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good dictionary
My father bought this book new and from Amazon, and we got it about one week ago. This dictionary is very good and almost complete. There's even a part of this book devoted to advices about life in Brazil, USA and England. The failures are some dificult words, who don't exist on it and other small failures.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not at all what I expected
"Incomplete" is the best word to describe this dictionary.I'm Brazilian, and for a native speaker this dictionary is far from "avanado" (meaning "advanced") as its Portuguese title suggests; incidentally in direct opposition to its English title: "Concise Dictionary."I bought it as an aid for a small translation project, and I am disappointed. It doesn't have words such as "mentoring" and "stewardship."I've had to revert to online searches, as I had started, in order to find an adequate translation for several words - a much more cumbersome method. If you need a truly advanced English/Portuguese Portuguese/English dictionary, keep looking; this is not it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fast, effortless, effectiveway to learn to learn to speak the language well.
After trying 2 other language programs, I found this the best for learning to speak language correctly and clearly---an easy, effortless way to learn, 1/2 hr a day. It's interesting, engaging, inspiring and it works even for the most unskilled language scholars such as myself. Although only a listening method, reading and writing skills are easier to develop once you learn the basic grammar. It's expensive and because of the learning technique of repetition, each part is limited in the vocabulary you learn. I would advise getting the quick Pimsleur first (cost is about $30) and then Parts II and III, not bother with Part I (expensive long version).

4-0 out of 5 stars good program to help build
This program is good,,it's set up a little different than level 1..in this program they put in dialogues throughout the lesson that you are on..at first this confused me and I was about to send it back, but I got in the groove...If you have made it to level 2 you probably have came across program that will help with pronunciation like "FSI"...Pimslear give you that repeat sentence review that's also needed in learning. They have added a little pamplet (not a book!!)in this program..it has nothing to do with what you are learning on the tape, so I don't know why they added this,,they are words in the pamplet that are not use on the regular tape so you have no idea how to pronounce them...
5-0 out of 5 stars Effective Approach to Language Acquisition
If you're serious about communicating orally in a foreign language, you'll want to consider the Pimsleur Language Program. My own experience with the program has far exceeded expectations: after learning two foreign languages in high school and college classroom settings, I decided to tackle Portuguese on my own, and was told to purchase the first "course," which consists of sixteen CDs and a short reading booklet. After having completed it, my feeling is that I've made more progress speaking the language over the course of a month just by listening and responding to the thirty hours of recorded conversations than I made in a year of formal classroom instruction. I recently completed the second course, and can recommend it to anyone interested in reviewing and continuing to learn Brazilian Portuguese.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Dictionary
So far, this is the most complete and accurate dictionary that I work with on a regular basis. I was able to find about 90% of the words I was looking for, but to be fair, the Portuguese language I'm dealing with is ancient and suspect that I would need a Spanish, Galician, and Latin dictionary to find those obscure or "obsolete" forms of the words I've come across.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good dictionary
This item is a good buy. It has most words you'll want to look up in Portuguese (there were a few I couldn't find, but could figure out, more or less). I wish there was some more information on grammar such as how to conjugate, recognizing different verb forms, etc. Due to the nature of Portuguese, some words that are very common won't be in there, such as a conjugated form of a verb. This can lead to confusion if you don't already know all the conjugation tables. That's why 4, not 5.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great definitions
This is an excellent resource for anyone who is an English speaker and seriously interested in learning Portuguese, or vice-versa. (For those who only want a tourist pocket dictionary, there are others that are smaller and lighter that will meet your needs.)This dictionary has sufficient breadth without being too large (physically). Most importantly, it is the best on the market in terms of providing correct definitions as well as differentiating between word use in Portugual vs. Brazil.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent to get vocabulary
Well organized in thematic units, this dictionary is fully illustrated, making it extremely easy for one to understand and memorize new words. It is very well translated in the sense that it really uses brazilian portuguese (rather than portuguese from Portugal) words and they are very well applied. At the end it has a very useful index, which pinpoints the exact location of the word in the dictionary. I would recommend for beginners and intermediate speakers who occasionally are looking forspecific words. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for intermediate learners!
This book is perfect for my skill level right now.The stories are interesting and fairly easy to read. They really help me pin point my weakness and introduce new vocabulary. The reason for only 4 stars is that I feel this is not really an appropriate book for the beginner or advanced learner.I think someone with more advanced Spanish would be incredibly bored and I think a beginner would struggle too much and rely on the facing page translations. For me it is really perfect!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for improving Spanish reading skills
Stories from Mexico/Historias de Mexico is a wonderful book for improving Spanish reading skills. In fact, the other two books in the series, Stories From Spain and Stories From Latin America are equally great. Each book makes wide and varied use of vocabulary so that each one of the books teaches new words. The translations are usually extremely faithful, which is important when the point is to build vocabulary knowledge and not literary beauty. These books are even great for teaching English to Spanish speaking ESL students. While spending my summer in Costa Rica I used Historias de Mexico with one of my English students and she loved it.The stories are short, so one does not become frustrated and they are very entertaining.Buy this book!I would LOVE to see a professional recording come out on this series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Spanish Starter
This soft-covered book of 140 pages contains 16 Mexican legends spanning >1500 years. These are easy, enjoyable stories to read, especially appropriate for the early Spanish learner. Having side-by-side English translation is immensely helpful [though in the back of the book there is an additional appropriate dictionary]. Few of the complicated Spanish verb forms, viz., subjunctive, are found which is a minor point. All the legends are popular Mexican legends, appropriate for young and old. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great phrase book
As the title says, it's not a dictionary, just a phrase book. However, the index at the back helps you find the words you need, so it can, in a pinch, serve as a basic dictionary. It's nice and small and easily fits in a pocket.I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to friends.

2-0 out of 5 stars worthless
this book is about the size of a deck of cards but not as thick.I looked at it for about 2 seconds and have not used it since.

4-0 out of 5 stars not as bad as they make it sound
One thing you must be aware of before purchasing this is that it is a CONTINENTAL PORTUGUESE book.Hence, the pronunciation is completely different than that of Brasil.I speak both accents and it's basically like a completely different language. You'd be surprised, if you are not already familiar with the differences.Like, "e" is not pronunced at the ends of words, the "r"'s in the beginning of words are not pronounced as "h"'s but more like a throaty trill (not like spanish, a bit raspier). The vowels are pronounced more closed. Also, continental portuguese's grammar can be quite a bit trickier.
