5-0 out of 5 stars Worthy of better than the negative reviews.
I'm sorry, but I just don't get the detractors to this text. With apologies to Pimsleur, learning a language is hard work. OK, if you want to learn how to say, "Hello," or, "Where is the bathroom," try one of the quickie methods, but if you want to be fluent in a conversation, live in Italy, or study there, there is no substitute for struggling with the pedagogy. Maybe there are some of us that can pick up a language effortlessly, but I'm not one of them. I was raised in an Italian family and heard it every day when I was a child, but when it came to really learning Italian, I had to sit down and work on it ... hard. This is a fine basic text, covering all the tenses, grammatical forms and basic vocabulary. It also nicely covers pronunciation and culture, which are often neglected in basic language texts. The material is presented in a traditional, logical manner. Yes, every now and then there is a word that is not in the glossary, but that is part of language ... sometimes someone says a word you just don't know. I guess that is what a dictionary is for. To use this text effectively, I would recommend buying a dictionary and a guide to common verbs, whoich are, frankly, necessary no matter what method you use. The workbook is recommended but not necessary. If you have someone around who is fluent, so much the better, but you can do almost as well by listening to the news at night from Italy on the Internet, buying an Italian movie or two, and struggling through an Italian novel a few sentances at a time. Work your way through this book and you will have passable conversational Italian, and be able to work your way through a newspaper as well. If you don't want to put in the sweat equity to learn Italian, sign up for a brain transplant, but otherwise, go out and buy a book like this one and plan on some hard work. Your effort will not dissapoint you if you do.

    3-0 out of 5 stars A rip-off
A good book but enormously overpriced.every year or so a new edition is put out with a few changes which are not necessary.to keep everything uniform in a course, a new edition must therefore be purchased at an inflated price.Much of the photos and material is not new but recycled from the computer program, "Transparent Language".

1-0 out of 5 stars I never reseived the book

3-0 out of 5 stars Not awful, but not perfect either
This is an alright text book. It does what it's meant to do. A person can learn Italian from this book as long as they are also in a class as well, but it definately has some flaws. One -it needs more examples of some of the more difficult grammar points. Two - the order is strange. Why did you start with avere? Somehow essere seems like a better place to start. And the chapter themes! They pretend that they have chapters arranged by topic, but it seems very haphazard to me. Also, several major grammatical topics are missing from this book, and as a result, many of my teachers have had to give us multiple hand outs to compensate. It's ok - but it could be a lot better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource
I read this entire book across two college semesters before moving to Italy. After having spent $500 or so on Italian language books, this is one of the few that was worth the money.Even though I speak fluently, I still refer to this book frequently to resolve difficult tense questions or clarify grammar details.I highly recommend this book to any serious student.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wait for the next edition, or stick to the 4th!!
I took 3 semesters of Italian, with each semester covering 1/3 of the book, so I completed the entire book. This book is good if you follow it in a traditional classroom setting, especially since the proffessor pointed out all the mistakes in this book, which unfortunately, are quite numerous for a textbook.I have also checked out the 4th edition, which is much better than this one as it is better structured and contains useful charts,(which are now omitted)and is thoroughly proofread. The 6th edition just came out, so hopefully it is an improvement from the 5th. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe I'm speaking Italian
I am half way through the second set of CDs in this series, but wanted to recommend this first series of CDs for learning Italian. I have tried to learn a foreign language before with no luck, so I didn't have any expectations for this course. But, it's wonderful! I am speaking Italian and having a great time learning. Not only do you learn the words and phrases, but you also learn how to pronounce each word, where to place the emphasis, and how to pronounce a sentence so that it flows. I strongly encourage anyone who is interested in learning Italian (or any other language) to use the Pimsleur series. The sets are expensive, but well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Start right here...
Pimsleur is truly the best method out there. It's price is justified by the quality of the instruction. I initially found it frustrating not having "the rules" explained to me (there is a little explanation, but not the extent that I thought was "proper" for a language course). In the end I gave up trying to puzzle out "the rules" and just enjoyed the lessons. And they are enjoyable - you are having real conversations, not the high-school "where is the red dress of the baker's daughter" stuff. I would recommend doing all 3 levels before attempting to study the written and grammatical areas of Italian. Why? Well, I've just started learning this side of the language in a formal class, and I'm breezing through it - I seem to have acquired much of the grammar subconsciously! I have much less trouble than my fellow students with the different pronunciation of things like "ce", "gli" and "sce" because I learnt the pronunciation of the words thoroughly before I was presented with the, to English-speakers, contradictory spelling. In addition, my teacher constantly praises my accent, and when I visited Italy, I was often complimented on my pronunciation. Yes, it's expensive, but worth every cent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Way to Learn Italian
I have purchased many different Italain learning systems, CDs, computer programs, etc, and this Pimsleur is fantastic. It is fun to use, progresses at a nice pace, introducing new material bit my bit, but not boring. It is focused on speaking and listening, and there is not written reinforcement for what you are hearing, but I find it easier to learn this way, then look up something when I need clarification. I bought this set after getting the first 6 Pimsleur CDs in a very inexpensive COSTCO set, then was hooked and ordered this complete Italian I course, and have not been disappointed. Order this set and you will find yourself speaking Italian quickly! ... Read more

I am still at the first stages, but learning a Italian is fun and the "Dummies" book is helpful!

3-0 out of 5 stars From an Italian teacher's perspective.. "www.nadasitaly.com"
It's hard to find that "perfect" Italian book to recommend to students, because I often run into these two situations: 1) the book is too in-depth and too focused on grammar; 2) the book is too superficial and more of a phrase-book for travelers, therefore not sufficient. SO, what I usually do is use a combination of books, this being one of them. It has some useful information on the culture, as well as practical expressions for the brave traveler. However, my recommendation is to take a basic course before traveling to Italy, because even knowing a few simple sentences can get you a long way. Also, in a group setting you'll be able to ask specific questions and to practice with others.I'm sure that if you check with your local community college, there are some short continuing education courses for foreign languages. This book really came in handy on our trip. The menu cut out cards and the flash cards proved to be very valuable to us, especially since a friend gave us the bad advice that everyone spoke some English.Don't believe that, there were a number of people that did speak some amount of English but we both wished that we had taken more time before our trip to learn a littlem ore of the language.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heads up in the US
Great product but a funny thing i noticed looking at the book:it's published in the UK so that makes the pronunciation examples a little off for those of us in the US.For example, on page 6 under Pronunciation it says that the "a" in Italian is pronounced like "bat."In the UK, bat isn't pronounced with the "flat a" sound, as in apple, but instead is more of an "ah" sound (which is the correct sound for the Italian a).The same is true for the pronunciation of the "o."In the US, it's a flatter o sound than in the UK, so pretend you're from the UK for that one as well. After listening to the CD, which uses voices with a UK accent, it'll be easy to understand the difference and make the adjustment so that it's the correct Italian sound.I joke that i'm learning Italian with a UK accent....There are other fun things about the book because of its UK publishing.I'll let you discover the others!

I am taking my family to Italy this year and wanted to know the basics like "where is...." "how much...." "do you speak English?" etc.The first five chapters were very good but by chapter six, they were concentrating on "do you want beer or wine at your place or mine...."This theme continued throughout the remainder of the 16 chapters.I would have prefered to order soda or tea at a restaurant or cafe. With all this talk about beer and wine, they never once mentioned how to find a bathroom.Their learning style was fine, but I would have preferred the "family version".

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent grammar book
I bought this a few years ago for an evening class. The class wasn't too good, but I worked my way through the book and found it excellent. The explanations are clear and straightforward, the vocabulary is useful, and you can actually learn a lot about how to use the subjunctive and the conditional. It also has useful information about troublesome cognates and word usage. I would recommend this quite highly for anyone trying to learn Italian. It's a review grammar so in theory you should already know a little Italian, but if you have some knowledge of French, Spanish or Latin, or if you just have a positive attitude, you should have no problems with this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product, and an excellent value
A woman that is passionately in love with Italy and all things Italian writes this review.I tend to study the Italian language before my trips to Italy and then immediately stop using it once the trip is over.I have finally decided to get serious about studying Italian on an ongoing basis and bought this book. The book is much more complete than I expected it to be.I will summarize the layout of the book and the pros and cons from my perspective.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Workbook--Great Value!
I have been extremely pleased with this workbook. It has a large variety of exercises and puzzles that keep me interested. The grammatical explanations are clear and concise. The format is appealing and easy to read.I do a few sections each day, and I am making great progress without feeling overwhelmed.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent introduction to the italian language
This is an excellent workbook to complement the audio portion of any self-study language program in italian. Its' strength is to present material in small digestible chunks of information of both grammar and vocabulary, that can be understood and digested on a daily basis. The practice exercises - that follow a dialog presentation of a typical activity representative of daily life and a small dose of grammar - reinforced the daily feeling of accomplishment.

5-0 out of 5 stars All in all - very helpful for a language-oriented beginner.
I studied Latin for 3 years in middle & high school and had taken French for 6 years when I graduated, so I am definitely well versed in the basic concepts of romance languages. For someone like me, this course is great - I quickly got the gist of the peculiarities of conversational Italian and feel very confident that I can now go expand my vocabulary with a good understanding of the structure to which I can apply it.
5-0 out of 5 stars E' posibile per me parlare Italiano adesso
I recently traveled to Italy with my Latin class, and my dad bought me this to prepare to speak Italian. I love learning languages and have been studying both Spanish and Latin for several years now. I had previously studied Italian through the Pimsleur tapes, but kept having to return them to the library, and have had little luck with other brands of audio language learning.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing program
Michel Thomas's course is like sitting in a language class room. I am so amazed with the results! I have not turned on music in my car since I bought this. Instead of throwing words without a logical sequence, he takes you through a path to establish language use - using a man and a women as students is a brilliant method! Yes - one can actually learn without memorizing! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're serious about learning Italian - this is your best bet!
From an Italian teacher's perspective, I highly recommend the Pimsleur series. If you're serious about learning Italian, I do think they're the best. And the reason is because they get you to repeat the phrases over and over and over again. Learning a language takes time, but if you need some essential expressions before your trip, they also offer an Instant Conversation series, which is a lot shorter than this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very good as an Italian / English dictionary
This book was difficult to use when trying to translate an Italian word. There is no single lookup, but rather chapters on various topics. I waded through these chapters when looking for a word, but was never able to find any of the words I was looking for. These were frequently seen words also. For example, you would think the chapter on driving would include frequently seen road signs, but it doesn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous When Used With Behind the Wheel Italian Revised
Rick Steves' Italian Phrase Book and Dictionary is a must buy for anyone desiring to use a refreshing and easy-to-use reference of commonly used Italian.Rick's Phrase Book is 'category intensive'.This is useful for the individual who desires to only use Italian in 'category specific' situations.Highly practical.

1-0 out of 5 stars Utterly and completely worthless
This series of disks is nothing more than Italian words and names spoken ONLY IN ITALIAN.Because there are no English translations, it is almost impossible to learn even the most basic Italian from these disks.

5-0 out of 5 stars entertaining well organized lessons with audio CDs
This Italian course is well organized, comprehensive and has 8 audio CDs. The dialogs are lively, modern, and natural.

5-0 out of 5 stars my favorite pocketbook!
i carry it everywhere, when in the states or italy- great and easy set-up, extremely comprehensible pronouciation tips and helpful/useful blurbs about not-so-well-know (by the outside world) cultural practices, lingo, actions, etc. pleanty of categories, and explanations that make learning bits and peices easier to understand- cant say enough good!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dont Ever Travel Without It
This little book is really what you will need when you're in Italy, you will find everything in it easy & highly organized for fast reviewing

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're going to buy a phrase book, this is the best one on the market.
Ok, here is my thing about phrasebooks: they don't teach you the language!! I understand that people just need some basic sentences before a trip, but believe me, I would definitely try to learn some Italian before going through an actual course.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best I have ever tried!
I am usually terrible at languages but this CD-set changed that. It is different. It held my interest and the lessens really sunk in. It is actually FUN listening to the CDs. I highly recommend Michel Thomas.

4-0 out of 5 stars I learned fast but not enough travel vocab
The method really does work--I was surprised at how much I was retaining. He has a thick accent but is careful to enunciate and spell things out if needed.
4-0 out of 5 stars An Italian teacher's opinion..
To be honest with you, it's hard to find that "perfect" Italian book or audio CD to recommend to students, because I often run into these two situations: 1) the book is too in-depth and too focused on grammar; 2) the book is too superficial and more of a phrase-book for travelers, therefore not sufficient. SO, what I usually do is use a combination of books, including audio CDs, this being one of them. Non dimenticare! Don't forget: the trick in learning a language is repetition, so any audio CD that gets you to repeat the words over and over again, is great practice. The more you repeat, the more you'll remember! It's like learning a song: you can't sing a song you've heard only 1 time, but if you hear it over and over, you'll be able to sing all the lyrics!! So, keep up the good work! If you need information on traveling to Italy and books to learn Italian, you can also contact me: nada@nadasitaly.com ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great choice for autodidacts
I chose this Italian-English/English-Italian dictionary over the others I was able to examine in a bricks-and-mortar store because (1) the print was crisp, clear, and larger than that of the mass-market size paperback dictionaries, (2) the paper is a higher-quality free sheet that won't yellow with age (dictionaries are the kinds of books you tend to hold on to for many years), (3) at 5 1/4 x 8 1/4 inches it is portable and fits nicely in my backpack, (4) the book lies open nicely and is not pinched in the gutter, (5) it covers a very generous 100K+ words and phrases, and (6) it was the only dictionary in its price category that had an easy-to-decipher pronunciation guide for the Italian terms. As someone who is trying to teach himself Italian, the latter point is very important to me. Io molto contento!

5-0 out of 5 stars Webby baby, you kinda old now, but I'd still do you
Webster's New World Italian Dictionary (Concise Ed. = ISBN 0139536396) was THE outstanding portable for many years, but it has not been updated since 1985 (1992 date listed on amazon is the reprint date). I used it through my entire undergraduate program and was frequently asked to look up definitions that students with inferior portables could not find (I almost always found them). The Webster's is an outstanding concise dictionary, though it lacks many neologisms of the past 20 years, the cultural notes, the keyword guides, the "Italian in Action" grammar guide, and the two-color format of the COLLINS ITALIAN CONCISE DICTIONARY (ISBN 0060787325). However, the number of entries for both concise dictionaries is roughly the same, and both feature excellent usage examples in phrases. The Webster's appears to be the overall champ for details. Catherine E. Love is editor on both dictionaries (with others).
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Added Feature
I have several Italian-English dictionaries. This one is excellent. It goes one step beyond the others: it gives the syllabification and phonetic transcription of the Italian words (the others give it only for the English words - something a native speaker of English does not need). If you are working on your own and must confirm pronunciation this is an excellent choice. ... Read more
