accurate - not always
The point when using any reference book is to expand on understanding and to get the true sense of the subject under study.This "Strongest" Strong's concordance falls short of this, as it apparently uses personal bias in its definitions (and comments), i.e. cross - 'stauros - cross, cross'. Research is for accurate knowledge. I was very disappointed.

If you are a fan of the NIV Bible then this is the best book to have along with it.This exhaustive concordance has everything you need to study the words in the NIV bible.It includes the Hebrew and Greek dictionaries.This is a must have book for your bible study needs!

over-rated and not worth the $
For much less than the price of this lexicon, one can purchase a copy of Thayer's, AND Trenchard's vocabulary guide AND a Greek concordance.Academic snobs make a big deal about how Thayer's lexicon is out of date because he did not have access to the papyri, but for 99% of New Testament words and meanings this is not an issue.Trenchard's book is actually MORE helpful, in my opinion, than this or any lexicon because he simply lists every possible meaning of each word.One way to get to the essence of a word's meaning is to look at the cognates, and Trenchard lists them all.A Greek concordance will actually print all the NT uses of a word in Greek.Bauer's lexicon is just not that helpful and is too wordy.
The Absolute Best Greek-English Lexicon That Money Can Buy
This is the most comprehensive Lexicon of Koine Greek available. I like how for almost every word, the lexicon gives you an extensive list of how this word is used in not only the New Testament, but in some of the Christian literature of the post New Testament era.
The Standard for NT Greek
This by far is one of the best, if not thee best Greek NT lexicon available. Of course the 3rd edition adds to this monument of scholarly work. It is a bit time consuming to look for the words in Greek, but if God has put that hunger in your heart then press on. You will not be disappointed with the purchase. The other "Greek Lit." that is referenced is helpful, but if you want just NT references then buy the BAGD "Shorter Lexicon". Either way I pray that you continue in the path that the Lord has layed out before you. Agreement!
I have to voice agreement with those who praise this as the best but I wonder how much of our love for the book is because it has sat on our desks for so many years and is the first place we go to check something!

Clear, Concise, and Perfect for Handy Reference
The Middle Liddell, as distinguished from the practically useless Little Liddell and the unwieldy Big Liddell, is the best reference work for beginning to intermediate students of Greek.I always advise learners to get this dictionary.It is not that much bigger or more expensive than the Little Liddell, but it is vastly more useful.I also make a point of advising beginners not to get the Big Liddell for everyday use.Even professional classicists use the Middle Liddell for its clarity and conciseness, wading through the enormity of the Big Liddell only when necessary.I'M NOT KIDDING.Start here.Every learner gets the Big Liddell, thinking, "Better too much information than not enough," and they always regret their decision.
Fair as a star when only one/Is shining in the sky
Dictionaries, however much we feel the need for them, always have to be handled with a certain amount of caution. Anyone involved in the compilation of such a work of reference has to be a jack of rather too many trades for total reliability. In even the best modern English dictionaries the derivation of words can often be seen to be dubious or even plain wrong by someone who has the requisite academic linguistic grounding. Such a grounding is infrequent, those working on the chain-gangs producing the dictionary are often not aware that there is anything lacking, but the general public are prone to believe that everything in so august a publication must flow directly from some fount of all wisdom and knowledge. Lewis and Short's Latin dictionary, the standard work of its kind for English-speaking readers of Latin, exhibits at one point the glaring and elementary error of stating that the feminine adjective Libyssa, Latinised from Greek, has some corresponding masculine formation Libyssus, and when I last saw the book nobody seemed to have picked the error up.

Magic - it is!
I saw this book at a friend's house in Spain and was captivated by it. It gives a whole new (to me) approach to learning Spanish.When I got home to the UK, I just had to track a copy down and buy one.Thanks to Amazon, I did!

Excellent book for beginners and beyond
I am a Spanish teacher and use this book with my beginner students as well as more advanced ones.It makes Spanish comprehensible and really highlights the patterns in the language.My students have been able to internalize basic structures with ease.Anyone could use this book even without a teacher.I just wish I could find it in French!The only thing not so good about it is that since it was written back in the 1950s, some of it is a little dated, like mentioning cables (as in telegrams), but you can always update it yourself with current vocabulary like "correo electrónico."It's a great book and easy to use! ... GREAT book
I decided to buy Teach yourself greek because im going to greece this summer. I had previous experience with slavic languages so some greek letters were familiar and some were not. This book teaches you step to step greek. I study half an hour a day and what i found very useful was writing down the words from each chapter on separate paper and rereading them whenever i can, on the bus,train...etc. I am not using the cd because I am practicing my greek with a native which is very helpful because he can correct me in my pronounciation and grammar. I have to say something.... DEDICATION is a key to learning any language, and if you dont renew the language and you plan to read the book only once and understand all, you are wrong. I am fluent in 4 languages and it took me a long time to learn them, but i was dedicated and gave my all...not only glimpse through the chapters and learn how to count.... that is nonsense.

Really helpful.
I have found this book & cd pack really helpful. I have a lot of experience learning languages by myself and since I was planning to visit Greece I have been into learning greek. (I've already come back and I plan to continue my studies). This book is really useful since it moves step by step. Every unit is about a certain topic and contains dialogs to introduce the new vocabulary in a progressive way. Then, you will find the necessary explanations in order to start speaking yourself. To check your progress, you will find lots of exercises (some written, some of listening comprehension) and you will really be practicing all the skills needed in language learning. Definitely, this is a book aimed at beginners, yet it is not a phrase book. And, if you are a grammar-based learner (like I am), I strongly recommend you to complement your studies with a greek grammar book, yet don't miss this one! ... Read more

One of the best Greek grammars!
This is an excellent Greek grammar, but only for the
Comprehensive but totally overwhelming
Since most of you are probably required to buy this for class like me, this review may not be the most useful. But anyone thinking of buying this should know that it has every possible bit of information about Ancient Greek--and every tidbit, every little comment, is numbered. This means the student ends up reading a chapter, say, on verb stems, and reading numbers 1024 to 1112. Since the data is so organized, you'd think it's an easy reference, but no. If you're looking for something specific, it'll take some wading through numbers and symbols. Whatever you want is definitely in there--it just might take some time to find it.

Still the best Greek grammar
I am sad to say that I never bought this Grammar during my four years of studying Classics while in college.If I had been smart and actually bought this when I started I could have saved myself a lot of time and prevented a lot of headaches.Now I know that Smythe is old, and some of his approaches are outdated, but that does not mean his grammar book is still effective.His work on both prepositions and moods of verbs are the best I have found and have helped me tremendously.There are some scholars who have surpassed Smythe's work in other areas of Greek grammar and syntax, but as far as a basic and comprehensive grammar goes, Smythe is still the best for your both your wallet and your studies. ... LOVE IT!
My kids love this book.Only drawback is the lack of pronunciation guide, it's been a while for me...Maybe it's in the teacher's guide, which I don't have.

Middle school Latin
I am developing a 5th and 6th grade Latin program at my middle school, and I have been delighted with the Minimus books.The kids really seem to like them, and I appreciate the bright colors and easy to follow story line.I am supplementing with more of a traditional paradigm approach to learning the grammar, but the books provide a great launching point for discussion and reading that is much more fun than just sitting around memorizing verb endings.Some of the material is very British, so I have to explain some of the references to my kids, but other than that it is a wonderful curriculum.

Latin for fun
This is a very sound method to teach Latin to the younger crowd.Would be perfect for homeschooling families! The story, based on archaelogical digs in Vindolanda, near Hadrian's wall in Britain, is entertaining and very engaging, and the skills build up painlessly.Highly recommended!I use it with 5th graders, who are known to read stories ahead of the class! ... "Theological" Indeed.
I was somewhat disappointed after buying this 10 volume set. Though Kittel gives his all - around views of certain words, that method turned out to be his biggest problem. You will get 3 to 20 POSSIBLE answers to every Greek word addressed in the New Testament by Kittel. Unlike Greek lexicons, Kittel's take on meanings of words leaves one scratching his head. To anyone making a defence of certain theological positions, stick with Old and New Testament lexicons instead of Kittel's theological slants.

Grateful to have a set
A couple gave me the full set for Christmas in 1974.They thought it would provide me insights for preaching that also benefit them as hearers of the sermons.I used it by means of the index volume for many years.Finally, I decided to read all nine text volumes cover-to-cover.It took me six years to finish, but I found thingsI did not find through the index and would never have known to seek.At times articles in Kittel can numb the mind with boredom.At other times they can cause it to soar with new insights based in an array of factual information.The reader will probably not agree with everything.Certainly, individual contributors of the articles do not always agree with one another.Still, I would not be without Kittel.My copy is drenched in ink from underlinings and notes I have made as I read it.I know it would be tempting to buy the one volume "baby Kittel" and skip the extra expense of the larger set, but there are key pieces of information that did not make it into the editors' view of what should be included in the one volume edition. Spend the money and get the real thing.

Helpful Work for Word Studies
Students of New Testament Greek should purchase this book.The one volume abridged addition is suited for quick word studies and for those looking for short background history on Greek phrases and words.

A most welcome 2006 edition of a classic text!
This excellent 3rd edition, including some well-chosen revisions and supplements, retains all the advantages of Schoder and Horrigan's measured approach while improving typography and readability, expanding the (extra-Homer) readings, and speaking more clearly to the preparation-deprived student of our time (earlier editions pretty much took for granted conceptual understanding of grammar and syntax). The book's pace is excellent and so is its well-phased introduction of new concepts as the student progresses.Self-correcting exercises are also included for the first time.Selections from the Odyssey begin halfway through the book, after the student has acquired sufficient knowledge and cultural background to appreciate them.
An enlightening pleasure
"A Reading Course in Homeric Greek" is a wonderfully-written text, filled with warmth and wisdom. This is a key to the genetic code of Western Civilization!

A Horrible Book
This book deals just with Ancient Greek Grammar.It can be used only as part of a University Course or as part of any teaching process involving a teacher.It is a book for ...professors of Ancient Greek!
Serious Introduction to Attic Greek
Mastronarde's book is an immensely useful and well-written introduction into Attic Greek.Now, Mastronarde does not bold-face important concepts or provide nice illustrations to guide the reader.However, if you are diligent enough to read the book thoroughly and do the exercises, you will have quite a thorough understanding of this language.
More praise, with some additions
I used Mastronarde's book to teach myself Attic Greek several years ago (and _before_ I knew Latin).I was adrift until I bought the ANSWER KEY.Nowadays, Mr. Mastronarde has a *(free) online website* which supplements this textbook, offering among other things versatile electronic flashcards keyed to the units (and is easily findable on Google). Of other textbooks I've seen, I also recommend Hanson and Quinn's "Intensive", which I think is a little stronger with respect to teaching the Subjunctive and the Optative Moods, but less good for solo learners.

The Greek New Testament
I Consider this book an excellent tool for serious students who are commited to study the bible. This includes a very good dictionary; greek-spanish.

This Is The Only One Called "Best"
If you are going to study Greek with the intent of using it you must purchase this book.There is no alternative.This is simply the best Greek New Testament on the market.Nothing else comes close.Other versions and editions exist.They may be useful (though I haven't found them to be of much use), but this is THE scholarly edition.

The One Stop Shop for the serious NT scholar.
How do we know what was actually in the "original" New Testament books? How well can we rely on any of a hundred different doctrinally biased translations? With a basic knowledge of koine Greek (not that hard, learning only 600 words will cover 90% of the NT), this is the book that helps provide the answer. There is no bias in one direction or another, and no interpretation is provided. The purpose of the book is for the user to see one "standard" text alongside all the variant texts, and to interpret for themselves. This is not a interlinear or interpaginated Greek text with English translation. This book is for those who are interested in the original words, indeed the lettering, of the text itself.

I Wouldn't Be Without This Concordance
In my opinion "The "Strong's Concordance" is the best concordance on the market. It works best with either the "King James" or "New King James" Versions of the Bible. Loving to stday Scripture and write I have many referance books. I use my "Strong's Concordance" and my "American Dictionary of the Enligh Language: Noah Webster's 1828 Edition" more than all the rest of my referance books put together. The Concordance's Greek and Hebrew Dictionary's are a faantastic aid to Scripture study. Along with my 1928 Webster's Dictionary, I use them constantly.The "Strongest Strongs" is the edition I own and highly recommend.

not very strong.....
i was looking forward to updating my bible studies but i was totally disappointed in this book..it wasnt the content but the printing is way tooooo light..a 60yr old eyes cant pickup the words or numbers the print way too light and the words and numbers printed too close together it looks like they were trying to save on paper by condensing it all. this book is half the thickness of my other strongs soo "i do not recommend this book"

Unmatched in self-teaching tools
Learning a new language is always difficult. Learning a language that is no longer in common use is even more so. But Parson's Greek tutor reduces the effort with fun interactive exercises tied to both of the most popular Biblical Greek books.In a matter of hours I was able to pick up my Greek NT and start reading many passages in their original language. Quickly getting into reading and memorizing scripture in the original is an encouragement to read and learn more. A great resource perfect for the layman wishing to learn a little Greek or the seminary student looking for a little extra help on the side.

I used this CD while I was studying Intensive Greek for seminary.I found this very helpful in getting through.I found the drill format to be very useful.It did present things in a different order than our text book, but that is the sort of thing to be expected. Beats Zondervan's "Strongest Strong's" by a mile!
Ok.I thought I had the "Strongest" concordance, but when I picked this one up and looked at it, I realized that I had fallen prey to a marketeer's clever play on words.Nelson's New Strong's Expanded Exhaustive Concordance blow's Zondervan's out of the water.The substantially expanded Greek and Hebrew dictionary definitions alone make this volume indispensible to any student of God's Word who owns a KJV.Like the "Strongest", it has all of the nice extras like a complete topical index of the Scriptures, and convenient alphabetical page markings.It is about twice as thick as Zondervan's concordance, partly because of the 600+ pages of Greek and Hebrew dictionaries(Compared to about 200 in the competitor's volume.), and partly becuase the print is larger (and WAY clearer and easier to read) than Zondervan's.The only thing "stronger" about the competitor's book is a better quality binding.This one isn't bad by any stretch, but Zondervan's lay-flat Smythe sewn binding is definitely better.That being said, I'm planning on giving my other concordance to my brother.This one's a keeper!

Essential for Scripture Understanding
I really love this Red Letter Edition as it is very easy to look up the words spoken by Jesus. The Hebrew, Aramic, and Greek dictionaries are simply superb. True, you must read the instructions on how to use it but that holds true for any concordance. Without this indispensable aid you are missing out on the true meaning of the words.

Not enough of a great thing
Having tried to study Greek on and off for years, I found that my reading ability was far greater than my speaking and listening ability. I would have to think too long to construct simple sentences, and had a hard time getting the grammar to work in my brain.
this is the best course for a beginner
I believe that Pimsleur Greek I is the very best course for the complete beginner.I listened to the CDs for 1-2 hours per day for 3 months before traveling to Greece.When I arrived, several educated Greeks told me that my Greek was perfect.It wasn't, but I had learned many useful phrases from the Pimsleur course.Other audio courses that I have tried progressed too quickly.
I'm very happy with my progress
I'm using the CD version.And I am making progress. I'm half way through the tapes.I find I learn best sitting quietly in a dark room with no distractions.When I go to bed I think about the words I've learned and fall asleep.I sleep better than I have in years, because I'm not thinking about problems.

give Machen a run for his money
This is different, not better or worse, than Machen's classic "New Testament Greek for Beginners."Whereas Machen is simple, systematic, and small, Mounce is wordy, complicated, and bulky (you need a separate work book for the exercises.)To learn Greek, you need both Machen AND Mounce.
Basics of Biblical Greek Grammar
One of the most helpful textbooks I've ever used.Multiple tools for learning really enhance the experience.

Decent introduction
Mounce gives a very streamlined introduction to Greek, tailored specifically for the New Testament. It will get you up and reading the Greek New Testament as fast as one possibly could. This book appears to be a standard for american seminaries. My only concern is that, with this book being a standard, we will churn out pastors who read and translate Greek in the same way - the Mounce way. My intuition is that much in exegesis is a judgment call, and so my worry is that we are all getting the "Mounce translation" of the Greek New Testament. ... Read more

Very Good... but...
The book is overall very good quality inside and out. It self-proclaims that it is MORE "accurate, up-to-date, complete numbering system, and user-friendly" than Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary. My review is mixed, even though overall I do like the book.

Good translation of a timeless classic
I am inclined to agree with the reviewer who said those who probably complain about the Odyssey being a bad work of literature are too young to appreciate it.When I was in high school, I found Shakespeare pretty boring and hard to understand; it was only later in life his power and insight really became clear to me.
An awful book..
Now let me begin by saying I understood this book. I read it for my freshman english class, and really didn't have much trouble understanding it.
