5-0 out of 5 stars Very handy and well-designed
This is a useful phrasebook for the novice heading to Iraq for the first time. No Arabic script; a shame, but that seems to be the case with almost all such handbooks tailored to one dialect of Arabic. The almost pocket-sized booklet starts off with a description of the phonetic system and moves quickly to a few very basic elements of grammar, basic words, numbers, telling time, and common situations from greetings to arrival at the airport, checking in at a hotel, getting around town, food and drink, personal care, sight-seeing, visiting mosques, medical care, security situation, and timely police station and checkpoint dialogue. Nothing special in terms of military lingo, but handy sections on "searching a house" and handling "demonstrations". Prepared in 2004, but not with the occupation and post-occupation too much in mind, no mention of roadside bombs or beheadings, prisoners, or prisoner handling; almost as if Iraq were a normal country. Ends with a 1,000 word basic dictionary. At this price you can't go wrong by keeping a copy handy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great!
I am an avid student of languages.I teach myself, since I am no longer in school.Pimsleur used to be my preferred beginner's course, but then I found Michel Thomas.Michel Thomas is the best audio course for a new student of French. It takes you from ZERO to be somewhat proficient. The course it great. You learn the grammar and a lot of vocabulary in a fun way. It's very engaging, and it feels like you are in a little classroom with just two other students and Michel himself.I highly recommend it.Definitely worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is indeed the fastest way to learn French!
The way the CD series is mapped out you can't help but pick up on the French langauge. He makes it so simple:)

4-0 out of 5 stars Deceptively Revolutionary!
When I first heard the Michel Thomas recordings, I have to say, I wasn't really impressed, maybe because I was listening with a linguistic ear and from a perspective of a French teacher. I couldn't see anything new or amazing in the long awaited revelation of Michel's secret teaching method. That was a somewhat arrogant first assessment on my part, I do now admit.

I keep this book on my desk and use it all the time.It makes having the right phrases and words a SNAP.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Supplement to Behind the Wheel Spanish
I am a foreign language aficionado, and I plan to spend my retirement learning languages and using and reviewing every major foreign language title on the market.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book with a Great Price that Will Teach You Spanish
I started learning Spanish eight months ago without any previous experience learning the language. I just used 3 tools that got 4 or 5 stars reviews at a popular learning Spanish product review site. This book is one of the tools. The other was the Learning Spanish Like Crazy self-study course. And the third was a reference book for verb conjugation (501 Spanish Verbs).

5-0 out of 5 stars Best text on the market for Spanish Instruction
I teach college Spanish and I love this text.It is thoughtfully constructed and provides numerous activities for communication in the target language.Dos mundos also provides very useful ideas for instructors. The pages are colorful and the content engaging. My students love all the activities I use from this text.I wish more Spanish instructors would embrace the methodology presented in Dos mundos. My level one Spanish students actually speak Spanish (albeit low-level Spanish).I don't know if I would recommend this text for independent study, however.I believe it would be most effective if used in conjunction with a dynamic instructor.I do agree that the authors should include a separate English-Spanish dictionary section. I also find the video segments to be very poor (and why are they exactly the same as the ones for Puntos de partida when they both have such different approaches to language acquisition?)
3-0 out of 5 stars pretty good
this is not a bad spanish book. i don't know if i would say it is great. lots of group activities that are helpful, but they are pretty simple and repetitive.they need to be a little more thoughtful and put in lots of DIFFERENT activities.one last, quite frustrating thing, there is only a spanish-english dictionary in the back.extremely irritating because this is a spanish 1-2 book, and anytime you want to look up a word, you'll need to consult another dictionary. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing edition
One has to wonder if the other reviewers either didn't actually use this book or if they work for Barron's because this book is a very sloppy effort and should be an embarrassment to Barron's, especially the chief editor, Nathan Quinones. To begin with, anyone using previous editions of this book will notice that almost all of the errors remain in the book. Misspelling, misplaced accents, they're all still exactly where they were in previous editions of this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars great format -- tons of typos
I have been using this book and find the format helpful. However, I have come across numerous errors/typos, which can be confusing for a beginning language student.Additionally, the CDs included with the book do not match the lessons. It is almost as if the CDs were made for an earlier edition and never updated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth buying and reading
This book is aimed at explaining proficiency oriented language teaching, and has very valuable material on proficiency and its importance. This is something many teachers seem to overlook as too obvious to be of concern, but Hadley shows it to be a central issue in teaching. The criticism made by one reviewer that it's tilted too much toward communicative teaching is mistaken. There's a difference between communicative teaching and proficiency oriented teaching, although they are obviously related. This book, like any other, is not sufficient by itself, but needs to be read an compared to others in order to get a range of viewpoints. It is not of instantaneous practical use to classroom teachers, but rather deals with the ideas behind teaching methods. It is a very valuable addition to a teacher's bookshelf and I have no regrets about buying it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why did I buy this book?
I remember using it in a course I took a few years ago, and I was thrilled to find so many different aspects of language teaching covered in one volume. When I was thinking of buying the present edition, I asked a friend, someone with a Master's degree in TESL/TEFL, her recommendation, and she said: "Well, Doug Brown recommended it to me."So I bought Teaching Language in Context, and am very glad I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars If I were to choose one book
No book can cover every aspect of language instruction, but by all means Hadley's work would be right up there with Ellis, Richards and Rodgers among others. This is a solid book, jam packed with historical facts and insights, and I feel has caught the full heart of the profession representing the current state of the profession.I could not disagree with the first reviewer more.I am reading this book through and I love this book. This is not a technique-y book at all but a serious treatise and contribution to educators who want to have a broader scope on theory and instruction. In my mind, the author answers the who, what, where, when, how, and why not just of one method but does it with several of the major methods. And this she does in Chapter three! This is a 512 page text and to my mind, the reading is coherent, smart, and digestable. This text is certainly one of the better foundational texts for comprehensive grasp of the field. This book is be a springboard to assist the reader to think through the past and present assumptionan about teaching language; it is an excellent choice! If I were to only have one text to me to read in this area, this would be a top contender. Thank you Alice Omaggio Haddley for the hard work and care you put into this wonderful book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As Good as Volume I and II
Now that I have reached the end of the Pimsleur Chinese courses, I am very aware of its strength and its relative weakness. Fortunately, Pimsleur is very complementary with Rosetta Stone. So now, I will redo the Rosetta Stone program, while keeping Pimsleur alive by going over one or two lessons a week.
1-0 out of 5 stars Pimsleur Chinese Mandarin Quick and Simple
This method would be perfect if it had a text book attached to it.Babies can learn without reading, but as soon as they master the sounds of communication they need to learn how to read and write to improve their skills.I find incredible that Pimsleur refuses to give access to a text book as soon as the learner has mastered basic sounds.I am a University Professor and can testify that a language method without a text book is a fake

5-0 out of 5 stars Michel Thomas Spanish CD
I prefer to approach a language as conversation, so for me, this language course is ideal. Michel Thomas builds vocabulary and grammatical usage in a way which makes remembering and using the language easy. If you loved your first year of a language course and fell apart during the second year when the teaching switched from conversation to grammar, this course is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Mastering Basic Spanish Grammar and Quickly Building a Vocabulary
If you are not familiar with the author of this course, Michel Thomas is perhaps the most famous language instructor of our time, known as the language instructor to the stars and celebrities, having taught Mel Gibson, Raquel Welch, Johnny Carson, Julie Andrews, Laurence Fishburne, Lucille Ball, Natalie Woodamong many other movie and television stars. In addition to being a famous language instructor, Michel Thomas was a World War II hero, Holocaust survivor, and a published author. Unfortunately, he left us in January, 2005, at the age of 90.
4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to learn...
This is a wonderful way to learn a language. I am only on disc four so far, and I am already learning a great deal. Michel Thomas uses phrases and words over and over again, building on your vocabulary and reinforcing what you have already learned. I would definitely get more than the two disc set as it only gives you a "taste" of the language. You do need a quiet place to learn and concentrate, and someone to practice on to build confidence and fluidity. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Heads up in the US
Great product but a funny thing i noticed looking at the book:it's published in the UK so that makes the pronunciation examples a little off for those of us in the US.For example, on page 6 under Pronunciation it says that the "a" in Italian is pronounced like "bat."In the UK, bat isn't pronounced with the "flat a" sound, as in apple, but instead is more of an "ah" sound (which is the correct sound for the Italian a).The same is true for the pronunciation of the "o."In the US, it's a flatter o sound than in the UK, so pretend you're from the UK for that one as well. After listening to the CD, which uses voices with a UK accent, it'll be easy to understand the difference and make the adjustment so that it's the correct Italian sound.I joke that i'm learning Italian with a UK accent....There are other fun things about the book because of its UK publishing.I'll let you discover the others!

4-0 out of 5 stars Review by an Italian language teacher
It's hard to find that "perfect" Italian book or audio CD to recommend to students, because I often run into these two situations: 1) the book is too in-depth and too focused on grammar; 2) the book is too superficial and more of a phrase-book for travelers, therefore not sufficient. SO, what I usually do is use a combination of books, including audio CDs, this being one of them. It has some useful information on the culture, as well as practical expressions for the brave traveler. However, my recommendation is to take a basic course before traveling to Italy, because even knowing a few simple sentences can get you a long way. Also, in a group setting you'll be able to ask specific questions and to practice with others.I'm sure that if you check with your local community college, there are some short continuing education courses for foreign languages. Non dimenticare! Don't forget: the trick in learning a language is repetition, so any audio CD that gets you to repeat the words over and over again, is great practice. The more you repeat, the more you'll remember! It's like learning a song: you can't sing a song you've heard only 1 time, but if you hear it over and over, you'll be able to sing all the lyrics!! So, keep up the good work! If you need information on traveling to Italy and books to learn Italian, you can also contact me: nada@nadasitaly.com ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars (Unfortunately) The best Korean language learning book on the market!
This is the best Korean language learning book on the market, and that isn't saying much. As a language instructor, I can identify a multitude of problems with Teach Yourself Korean (Complete Course). This book's biggest failing is that the instruction does not adequately prepare you for the exercises because there is NO instructional reinforcement of concepts. Many concepts that should be grouped together for comparative analysis (such as proper particle usage), are scattered throughout the book. The use of the Korean writing script is inconsistent, so when completing the exercises at the end of each unit, you won't be able to check your spelling against the answers in the back. Also, the exercises sometimes contain overly open-ended questions that can be answered in a variety of ways. A beginner comparing his answers to those in the back may not actually be able to determine if his/her answer is correct.

5-0 out of 5 stars Italian Verb Drills Better With Behind the Wheel Italian Revised
I have owned and used Italian Verb Drills for years.I would describe it as the quintessential bedrock source for a simplified learning of a potentially complex subject, namely, Italian Verbs. The book is so complete that a simple review will not capture it all.Suffice it to say that it is organized in such a way that anyone is sure to maximize their learning and understand of Italian verbs and idioms in a minimum of time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Better With Italian Behind the Wheel Complete
I took Amazon's advice and bought Italian Verb Drills to complement my Italian Behind the Wheel Complete Course.
5-0 out of 5 stars Italian verbs
I am finding this work book to go along very well with my Pimsleur language CDs.There are good exercises to reinforce useage. I am a beginner learner and am finding it well written, easy to follow and extremely helpful.I am using it in conjunction with Barron's Italian Verb work book as well and am finding that they explain things a little differently from each other, so what I don't get from one I get from the other. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well Organized
French grammar is hard to learn because although there are rules there are more exceptions than rules. This book does a great job of organizing things in a way to deal with all the expections.I especially like the way it presents the verbs.I own quite a few books on French grammar but the way this book groups the verbs is really much better. In terms of reviewing for a test (or for real life if you live in France) a book like this is essential, since most normal French text book are just too disorganized to find what you are looking for. Also it helps me to see all the rules about a certain topic in one place at one time. There are lots of exercises and the answers are in the back of the book to check yourself.Learning French grammar isn't ever going to be easy, but if you use this book it will be a lot easier than if you don't.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have French learning companion
I don't have to describe the content in detail as the self-explanatory nature of the title.I studied French in L'Alliance Francais for some time.Their communicative approach almost makes me paralysed until I have this book.I can't imagine how a middle age person can learn a new language by merely listening and imitating the sound of teachers. On the contrary the grammatical approach in this book systematically illustrate every single bit of grammar detail for beginner (and intermediate level student). By reading and reviewing the explanation as well as practising the exercise, I can make a lot sense in French now.And I am not just fantizing it.The most exciting piece of news is that my progress is noticed by both my French teacher and my classmates. The mastering of basic is so satisfying and giving me advancement and enjoyment.

5-0 out of 5 stars good for brushing up skills
I've worked through this book a couple of times now to brush up my French skills. It's excellent as a companion to a course, or just to practise. I would recommend it from the beginner, to the more advanced speaker who would like to refine their knowledge of the language. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a simple book
The biggest problem people have found with this book is that it has no Japanese characters in it. I was fortunate enough to preview the book in a bookstore before deciding to purchase it. On the first page inside the book, it says that the purpose of the book is to teach phrases and grammar and purpose and will not contain 1 Japanese symbol.
5-0 out of 5 stars Know the purpose
On the cover of this book it says "Speak Japanese - the fun and easy way!"So why am I not complaining that it didn't include the writing?Because I knew that it was for speaking the language. This isn't exactly the advanced type of book, but it teaches a lot more than most Japanese books I have read. Most other Japanese books I have read only make you memorize specific phrases and sentences. But this one tells you how to put a sentence together. It would be beyond the scope of this book to list the writing, because this is aimed at beginners. When you get well-versed in the speaking, yes another book should do for the writing. But, for its true purpose, Japanese for Dummies does an outstanding job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Konnichiwa!
This book is so awesome! When I was paying for it at a book store a man started speaking Japanese to me and I could understand what he was saying. We started talking and that was so awesome! The CD is so cool and I really love it! Everyone is impressed about my speaking skills and I think that's so cool!

4-0 out of 5 stars Me gusta (lo que llevo leido)
El libro está bastante bien. La clasificación de las lecciones es clara, las explicaciones son minuciosas y tiene diálogos con personajes simpáticos para ponerse en situación. Me gustan mucho los CDs, se escuchan bien y en poco tiempo empiezas a entender lo que dicen.
5-0 out of 5 stars Urdu asaan nahin hai, magar yeh kitab achi se achi thi.
On the box it says that the goal of this book was to reach "all-around confidence". It did that and more. This book covers a variety of subjects while following the story of John and his wife Helen as they travel through several sites Pakistan and North India. There were even several situations and vocabulary words that they covered that I thought I would never need to use, but found myself using in conversation shortly after. Also, the culture notes were a very nice touch as well. And as a Muslim I really liked the Islamic culture notes they brough up also.
4-0 out of 5 stars great choice_ make sure you get a dictionary as well.
It is as compact as it gets... I was amazed to see myself reading and understanding (!) websites in Urdu after 3 weeks max (i have to mention tho, that i am a native Turkish speaker with some knowledge of Persian.. that certainly helped me memorize words much faster and eaily). The topics are well chosen, giving just about info you'd need for a daily conversation (and survival). The repetition pattern helps a lot to keep words in your mind. And no matter how much I want to complain about it's load of grammar and structure, in the end, it proved successful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant, nonthreatening way to teach basic English skills.
Each time I get a new Hispanic student with limited English proficiency, I purchase a copy of this book for him.My ESL students are all incarcerated men with various educationalbackgrounds.Even those students who have very limited skill in reading Spanish have found this book helpful. One student carried the removable fold-up phrase card in his pocket daily for a couple of months.I would not suggest using this text as the sole teaching material in a classroom setting, but it can serve as an invaluable teaching/learning aid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellente
This is an excellent book for teaching hispanic children and/or adults to learn alot of basic English language. It gives good examples and utilizes them in situations so the pupil may learn at their own pace.
