5-0 out of 5 stars Kodansha's highly recommended
This dictionary is most excelent for intermediate students of japanese, that knows hiragana and katakana. Enjoy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best J-E Dictionary you can get!
This dictionary is the best possible dictionary you can get. I've purchased, used, and browsed about a dozen different J-E, E-J, J-E/E-J and J-J dictionaries before finding this one! This is definately the one you should start with.
5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible
This dictionary is a must have for serious students of Japanese. I especially love the example sentences it gives, something I haven't seen in other Japanese-English English-Japanese dictionaries. I would not recommend it for the dilettante or traveler, as it's size would make transport difficult and it uses kana, not romanized Japanese; so understanding of hiragana and katakana is necessary. It does seem expensive compared to other dictionaries, but it really is worth it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Me gusta (lo que llevo leido)
El libro está bastante bien. La clasificación de las lecciones es clara, las explicaciones son minuciosas y tiene diálogos con personajes simpáticos para ponerse en situación. Me gustan mucho los CDs, se escuchan bien y en poco tiempo empiezas a entender lo que dicen.
5-0 out of 5 stars Urdu asaan nahin hai, magar yeh kitab achi se achi thi.
On the box it says that the goal of this book was to reach "all-around confidence". It did that and more. This book covers a variety of subjects while following the story of John and his wife Helen as they travel through several sites Pakistan and North India. There were even several situations and vocabulary words that they covered that I thought I would never need to use, but found myself using in conversation shortly after. Also, the culture notes were a very nice touch as well. And as a Muslim I really liked the Islamic culture notes they brough up also.
4-0 out of 5 stars great choice_ make sure you get a dictionary as well.
It is as compact as it gets... I was amazed to see myself reading and understanding (!) websites in Urdu after 3 weeks max (i have to mention tho, that i am a native Turkish speaker with some knowledge of Persian.. that certainly helped me memorize words much faster and eaily). The topics are well chosen, giving just about info you'd need for a daily conversation (and survival). The repetition pattern helps a lot to keep words in your mind. And no matter how much I want to complain about it's load of grammar and structure, in the end, it proved successful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterful Triumph
The third edition of the Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church retains its great reputation as the single best reference work for use when studying the Christian religion. Now in the hands of E. A. Livingstone (who took over for the late F. L. Cross), it combines excellent scholarship from all parts of the Church and presents each topic relatively free of ecclesial bias. The topics covered are not short descriptions of a few sentences but multi-paragraph articles that are well researched, very readable, and remarkably complete. For those who are developing an interest in Church history, it will be an indispensible tool for their research. All in all, it is a masterful triumph.
1-0 out of 5 stars An apologia for Catholic tradition, not a dictionary
As the title says the book is rife with Catholic apologetics.Catholicism is the touchstone used to compare pretty much every belief and "ism" to (i.e. protestantism, arianism, etc...) This review is not to make a case for or against Catholicism, but to demonstrate the ludicrous "scholarship" of this work, as opposed to what one would expect from any work claiming to be a "dictionary."Instead of spending it's words on the historical aspects/development of a given belief, the entries are dominated by apologias for, or against, said belief from the Catholic point of view. This behavior is exemplified in the treatment of the Trinity doctrine entry, and oddly, a venomous attack on Jehovah's Witnesses(while giving fair accounts to pretty much every modern religious movement that Catholicism generally deems: "heretical.").
5-0 out of 5 stars The best!
Indispensable for many areas of Theological research - Church history, Dogmatic overviews, biographies, editions, and so many many other things.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible book not enough examples
If you buy the book alone without the solutions manuals and you are taking calculus 1 2 or 3 you will have the hardest time in your life. Its ridicoulus how the examples in the book are general and when the problems arrive in the section they are mostly special cases where you have do to something absolutly different. For a student this book is a nightmare, maybe for somebody that has taken the class before or knowledgeble this book might be useful to practice hard problems. In my opinion, books like these should not be published for the purposes of teaching their content in universities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent condition. Great price. Fast delivery.
I could not have asked to receive this book in a better condition. The book is in perfect condition.
3-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Organized
This book does a decent job with defining theories and concepts, which anyone can do; however, when trying to provide or explain examples and solutions to problems it leaves you very short of how it is done. The solutions manual is highly recommended for this book (ISBN 0-201-66211-6). Throughout the semester my professor used selected problems throughout the chapters to practice on but lectured and provided examples from his own problems. Without a lecture, this book is very hard to work with. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant, nonthreatening way to teach basic English skills.
Each time I get a new Hispanic student with limited English proficiency, I purchase a copy of this book for him.My ESL students are all incarcerated men with various educationalbackgrounds.Even those students who have very limited skill in reading Spanish have found this book helpful. One student carried the removable fold-up phrase card in his pocket daily for a couple of months.I would not suggest using this text as the sole teaching material in a classroom setting, but it can serve as an invaluable teaching/learning aid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellente
This is an excellent book for teaching hispanic children and/or adults to learn alot of basic English language. It gives good examples and utilizes them in situations so the pupil may learn at their own pace.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for English as a Second Language classrooms or self-study for students learning English
A Year In The Life Of An ESL Student: Idioms And Vocabulary You Can't Live Without is an excellent resource for English as a Second Language classrooms or self-study for students learning English. Following Andre, a student from Switzerland spending a year completing his English studies at a private language school, the lessons cover a wide variety of language situations directly relevant to adult ESL students, from disembarking at the airport to getting around the city to hanging out with classmates. A Year In The Life Of An ESL Student is particularly valuable for its definitions of common idioms - English phrases with a specific meaning that is not immediately identifiable to those unfamiliar with the language's nuances, such as "blow someone away" (astonish someone), "into something" (enjoy something), "give someone a ring" (phone someone), and much more. Simple exercises for idiom recognition and daily use and a host of online resources round out this consumable textbook.
5-0 out of 5 stars Francis Nails It!
Never before in my 20 years of E.S.L. teaching have I seen a better idioms textbook. A Year in the Life is simple to use, is extremely comprehensive, and helps meet a need for relevant, structured, higher level material dealing with spoken English. There are a variety of exercises and activities that can be utilized/skipped according to needs and tastes, and the extensive definitions and examples make it possible for students to learn correct usage at home. All in all, a great find for students and teachers alike. Bravo Mr. Francis!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Work Book
One of the most challenging difficulties teachers of a second language face is creating an atmosphere where the learning process becomes meaningful and at the same time practical, painless and enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
As a teacher for community Adult ESL classes with 100% Spanish speaking students I can say that my classes are THRILLED with this bi-lingual, pictoral resource.I know some schools of thought resist the use of native language but my students find comfort and help with the bi-lingual translations (as do I as a Spanish Language learner). This book gives you lots of bang for your buck and the teacher resource materials are very useful, too!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for ESL or for teens and up learning Spanish
I used this for several years in my Adult ESL classes - the words, and matching up the numbers are a little cumbersome for any age younger than junior high, I think. The only drawback is the lack of phonetic spelling - I think we expect it from a dictionary, but most picture dictionaries leave that part out for some reason.

5-0 out of 5 stars The mother of all German dictionaries
If there is a word in the German language, this venerable tome has it.It is a constant reference and I find the section on business correspondence especially helpful when I am looking for the corrent way to phrase a request/order just so.My edition, published in 2001, does not have the section on internet-lingo, but that just adds to it's versatility.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love them
I love the flash cards and it is a great way to get the whole family involved.....

5-0 out of 5 stars Sign Babies First Words
These flash cards are wonderful! I would highly recommend these.I bought these for my 22 month old son when he wasn't talking. His speech therapist wanted to start signing to see if that helped. So I bought them and couldn't believe how simple it was to teach and learn.I put the cards in a photo album to keep them clean and alsoso he could look at them whenever he wanted to. It does make a nice book, and convenient to take to the sitters.Within a couple of days the whole family was signing. He still signs today. These are very inexpensive and a great learning tool. Hope this helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love them
I think these cards are great - I love them - I love the description of the sign - I don't think think the picture description part is the best but the black and white part of of the description of the actually signing is perfect and understandable. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good if you have never been to Germany.
I was stationed in Germany 15 years ago. I am going back this Dec so I wanted to brush up / learn German so I'm not lost when I get there. The CD's proved to me that I actually remembered much more than I expected. I didnt think my vocabulary was that good until I listened to all 16 lessons. These CDs were not very helpful to me. If you spent anytime in Germany and got off the base on a regular basis, these cd's probably wont help you much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning for "dummies"
This has been and is great. It is taking me several reviews of each lesson to feel comfortable in speaking and not having to "think" of my response, but it just comes - which is amazing. The only drawback, is that sometimes the pronounciations seem to change, especially between the female speaker and the male speaker, and I'm not talking about the way youare to say a word, but when they break it down and then say it whole, the next time they say it is sounds different.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you are ready to learn German, this is the course for you!!
I took German in high school (30ish years ago) and was taught the way many of us have been taught...the ball, the bed, I am hungry, etc. but this course was a pleasant surprise.Basic conversational words and phrases are repeated and gradually built upon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very user friendly
I first studied biblical Hebrew in college forty years ago.Hebrew is so very different from Western European languages that it was hard for me to wrap my mind around it.Dobson's book aims at making the study of Hebrew fun and at giving the student success each step of the way.He aims to get the student reading worthwhile sentences and many of them as soon as possible. It is still the learning of a language, so it is not a "for dummies" project. But, Dobson presents the most frequent verb forms first and gets those drilled into the student's mind so they become very familiar. He does this rather than the approach used by Weingreen in my college class in which the student memorizes all forms in a paradigm and then later tries to pull some meaning out of the paradigms in the experience of translating.I especially like the audio CD.It allows the student to engage hearing as well as seeing in fixing a lesson in the mind.Dobson attempts to use current understanding of how one learns in order to make the material familiar territory for the student.I think I might not have let my Hebrew lapse over the decades had I learned with an approach like Dobson's the first time.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book.
Mr. Dobson teaches in a way that is both very informative, and often humorous. By the completion of this book, I had translated the book of Jonah, as well as passages from nearly every book in the Old Testament. I would highly recommend this book to someone who wants to learn Biblical Hebrew, even if you (as I did) already have some knowledge of the language. This is truly a profound book. I learned much more than I expected to learn when I bought this book. My only complaint, is that the meanings listed for words are in (abstract) english, such as the Hebrew word "chai" which Mr. Dobson says means "life" which it does, but the word actually means "stomach" and was a Hebrew sign of life. Though you would rarely even consider translating the word as "stomach" it is nice to know the ancient meanings behind the Hebrew your reading... still, a very good book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thai for Beginners...
This book explains exactly what it says on the cover.
1-0 out of 5 stars Practically useless.
Unless you have a genuine desire to become fluent in Thai this book is useless, especially without the CDs or an actual Thai teacher. If on the other hand you are just going to Thailand for vacation or perhaps to teach English, I highly recommend the Lonely Planet Thai phrasebook - it is much easier to use and has much more practical information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice package as advertised....
I found this book/CD combo set to be not only concise, but affordable. It's written by an instructor who is a native Thai speaker, living and working in the US as a linguist/translator.This is probably why the set seems to accommodate the needs of the practical English speaker seeking a good fundamental in Thai langauage.

5-0 out of 5 stars All the grammar in a single textbook - yay
I had to have this as reference for a college class I took.It has 16 chapters, each with the usual new grammar concept, new vocabulary words and exercises that stress that grammar and vocab. Each has reading passages about Germany in German and dialogues that reinforce concepts in that chapter. It covers the basics and is a fine text book. But here is something super super cool:It covers all the grammar. So you can use it for German 1 and German 2.This makes it a good choice for college classes to teach from, and a good book to review on you own if you already know German but want to brush up.
5-0 out of 5 stars Complete as it gets...
For the absolute beginner, this book (especially combined with the workbook, with exercises complete with answers in the back) is fabulous.IT DOES USE THE NEW REFORMED SPELLING, which is a PLUS PLUS PLUS. (In each chapter there are 2 vocabulary boxes with the vocab used in context within mini-dialogues, arranged by verb, noun, adj., idioms, etc. and grammar.(Be forewarned, don't attempt to swallow all the grammar in one chapter in one gulp, that's where the workbook comes in to test what you really know). There is a cultural section at the end of each chapter explaining German culture (women's movements, WWII, etc.) and also additional thematic vocabulary. The explanations are in English and are clear and easy to comprehend. The wonderful thing is that this book has an Einfuhrung, where the names of the letters, numbers, articles, formalities, and basics are printed out.The lively pictures are a great adjunct feature and IT'S NOT DRY, there is some personality in the instructions and dialogues. The characters in the dialogues have attitudes and emotions.5-0 out of 5 stars german language learning

5-0 out of 5 stars must have
THIS BOOK IS A MUST FOR THE INDIVIDUAL WHO TRULY WANTS TO UNDERSTAND THE ESSENCE OF ASL.I HAVE TAKEN ASL 1 IN COLLEGE AND READING THIS BOOK JUST CLARIFIED ALL OF WHAT I HAD LEARNED IN CLASS.IT BROUGHT AMPLIFICATION AND TRUE COMPREHENSION.I HAVE HARDLY BEEN ABLE TO PUT IT DOWN.IT HAS BUILT UP MY CONFIDENCE SO MUCH THAT I ACTUALLY WENT AND SIGNED TO TWO OF MY INSTRUCTORS WITH TOTAL CONFIDENCE AND ACCURACY.IT IS WONDERFUL!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners
This book is clear, with sketched pictures instead of photographs. It places the signs in the order that one would use them in ASL.While I would recommend this book for beginners in sign, it just doesn't offer much vocabulary beyond conversational sign.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's good, but I wish it were longer
The illustrations are well done, and the language presented is very helpful.I would like to see a longer book with more examples. When I first saw the book, I was concerned that the illustrations would not be specific enough, but they are quite well thought through and easy to read once you understand the notation. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Do we really need political bias in a tranlation book?
I was really looking forward to using this book on our next trip to Paris, until I read the section in which it defines Jean-Marie Le Pen's Front National party as an "extremist, racist party". I mean, after the events over the past year (car burnings, riots, cartoons, etc) it would behoove Mr. Steve's to pray that Le Pen's party wins the next election, or he will be writing a book on how to speak Arabic instead of French

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for learning the basics
I am very impressed by this book and how easily it teaches the pronunciation of this difficult-to-learn language. It's pocket-sized, and has commonly used words inside the front and back covers for easy reference. There is also a handy 'menu guide' --- very important for travellers with finicky eating habits! We leave for France again in a month ... and definitely feel more comfortable approaching the language barrier with this book in tow.

5-0 out of 5 stars great remedial course
I haven't spoken French since high school, & I'm planning my first trip to Europe (including Paris). This book is really helping me remember all the tricky parts of the language, but it doesn't bog me down with the grammar that my old French teacher tried to drill into my head! This book has the important stuff, like ordering in a restaurant. It's small enough to fit in my pocket, so I know I'll use it a lot. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Book!
This textbook is difficult to use and doesn't adequately explain grammatical points, and it is not put together well. My French class just started using this book, and everyone is having trouble. The tests with this book use idiomatic expressions and other grammatical points that aren't explained expressed in the text or in the text at all. My class is doing poorly with this book. It doesn't offer any type of practice test program like its predecessor Rendez-vous. Personally, I don't like Rendez-vous or Bravo; the two books just don't present the material in a clear and concise manner. I suggest to any instructor considering this book for his or her class to make another choice! Students would be better off buying a learn-it-yourself program at their local bookstore rather than taking a course with this book! If you're looking for a good intermediate French textbook consider Interaction - Révision de grammaire française 6th edition by Susan St. Onge, Ronald St. Onge, and Katherine Kulick. For advanced grammatical studies I recommend La Grammaire à l'oeuvre 5th edition by John Barson. Both of these wonderful books are published by Thomson-Heinle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Genki is the Best book I've ever seen!
Genki is a great book. 5 stars hands down. I recommend it to anyone that wants to learn japanese, but you can get it brand new and for way less than some of the prices people are selling them used for!
5-0 out of 5 stars Genki - Excellent Japanese text
In my experience studying Japanse study, both in college and self-directed, I've owned around a dozen different "course" texts. The Genki series is by far the best I've seen.Grammar, vocabulary, and kanji are all included in the text. The pacing is very good and I really appreciated the complete dependence on kana and kanji instead of romaji (a crutch that will only slow you down in the long run).I also recommend the workbook as a supplement although the main text does contain some good review exercises.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great start to learning Japanese
This was textbook used by my Japanese teacher in my college classes, and is a great way to start learning Japanese. As an anime, manga, video game fan, and having a general interest in Japan, this is anice way to start out. The book starts with the most basic structures and slowly builds up to making more complete sentences.

2-0 out of 5 stars Read and Speak Arabic for Beginners
This book is okay for someone who wants to learn Arabic as the formal language as in books, Quraan, writings, and news, not the everyday spoken language. This book is not for you, if you want to learn a particular dialect from a particular country.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just Like the Title Says...Good for Beginners
This is a good book for people starting to learn Arabic. It has useful phrases and explains the language well.A good trick the book uses is to write names like "Jane" in Arabic. It's much easier to learn to read Arabic if you work with words you know.
4-0 out of 5 stars Quick and Easy
