5-0 out of 5 stars Worthy of better than the negative reviews.
I'm sorry, but I just don't get the detractors to this text. With apologies to Pimsleur, learning a language is hard work. OK, if you want to learn how to say, "Hello," or, "Where is the bathroom," try one of the quickie methods, but if you want to be fluent in a conversation, live in Italy, or study there, there is no substitute for struggling with the pedagogy. Maybe there are some of us that can pick up a language effortlessly, but I'm not one of them. I was raised in an Italian family and heard it every day when I was a child, but when it came to really learning Italian, I had to sit down and work on it ... hard. This is a fine basic text, covering all the tenses, grammatical forms and basic vocabulary. It also nicely covers pronunciation and culture, which are often neglected in basic language texts. The material is presented in a traditional, logical manner. Yes, every now and then there is a word that is not in the glossary, but that is part of language ... sometimes someone says a word you just don't know. I guess that is what a dictionary is for. To use this text effectively, I would recommend buying a dictionary and a guide to common verbs, whoich are, frankly, necessary no matter what method you use. The workbook is recommended but not necessary. If you have someone around who is fluent, so much the better, but you can do almost as well by listening to the news at night from Italy on the Internet, buying an Italian movie or two, and struggling through an Italian novel a few sentances at a time. Work your way through this book and you will have passable conversational Italian, and be able to work your way through a newspaper as well. If you don't want to put in the sweat equity to learn Italian, sign up for a brain transplant, but otherwise, go out and buy a book like this one and plan on some hard work. Your effort will not dissapoint you if you do.

3-0 out of 5 stars A rip-off
A good book but enormously overpriced.every year or so a new edition is put out with a few changes which are not necessary.to keep everything uniform in a course, a new edition must therefore be purchased at an inflated price.Much of the photos and material is not new but recycled from the computer program, "Transparent Language".

1-0 out of 5 stars I never reseived the book
I never received the book that I ordered.I have been trying to reach the seller and can't get a hold of him.I'm really upset about this.I want to get my money back. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars over-rated and not worth the $
For much less than the price of this lexicon, one can purchase a copy of Thayer's, AND Trenchard's vocabulary guide AND a Greek concordance.Academic snobs make a big deal about how Thayer's lexicon is out of date because he did not have access to the papyri, but for 99% of New Testament words and meanings this is not an issue.Trenchard's book is actually MORE helpful, in my opinion, than this or any lexicon because he simply lists every possible meaning of each word. One way to get to the essence of a word's meaning is to look at the cognates, and Trenchard lists them all.A Greek concordance will actually print all the NT uses of a word in Greek.Bauer's lexicon is just not that helpful and is too wordy.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Absolute Best Greek-English Lexicon That Money Can Buy
This is the most comprehensive Lexicon of Koine Greek available. I like how for almost every word, the lexicon gives you an extensive list of how this word is used in not only the New Testament, but in some of the Christian literature of the post New Testament era.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Standard for NT Greek
This by far is one of the best, if not thee best Greek NT lexicon available. Of course the 3rd edition adds to this monument of scholarly work. It is a bit time consuming to look for the words in Greek, but if God has put that hunger in your heart then press on. You will not be disappointed with the purchase. The other "Greek Lit." that is referenced is helpful, but if you want just NT references then buy the BAGD "Shorter Lexicon". Either way I pray that you continue in the path that the Lord has layed out before you. Seek the Lord with all your heart...lean not on your own understanding...He will make your paths straight...God Bless You. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Signing Naturally 2
Signing Naturally are very good textbooks for the beginner and intermediate sign language students. The demo signing is a little fast for someone that is still learning, but the speed can be slowed down if you have a DVD player with that capacity. I am a student at college learning sign by using these textbooks. These are truly a must if you're dedicated to learning sign language and something about the deaf culture.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the greatest book
I love the video and the exercises that go along with the video are wonderful. But the book on the other hand is poorly written. Several signs are wrong or outdated. Many signs are drawn in such a way that it could be confused with other signs. Since there are no labels marking what word the model is signing there is no way to figure out the authors intent.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!
This book is very nice. I am fluent in ASL (American Sign Language) as of now, but that goal was only reached by taking classes at a local community college. The ASL class used this book and with this book, it was so easy to learn ASL! I truly recommend this book for people who want to learn ASL and use it a lot, or for parents who wish to use it with their toddlers (this is very helpful, my mom did it with me when I was little and it helped me later on). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good for listening comprehension and practice
This audio set is very useful for getting an idea of how things are pronounced natively, and some slight variations on those pronunciations. However, it would not be a good idea to start here, as it relies heavily on memory. However, a good accompanying set to any books and courses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best text on the market for Spanish Instruction
I teach college Spanish and I love this text.It is thoughtfully constructed and provides numerous activities for communication in the target language.Dos mundos also provides very useful ideas for instructors. The pages are colorful and the content engaging. My students love all the activities I use from this text.I wish more Spanish instructors would embrace the methodology presented in Dos mundos. My level one Spanish students actually speak Spanish (albeit low-level Spanish).I don't know if I would recommend this text for independent study, however.I believe it would be most effective if used in conjunction with a dynamic instructor.I do agree that the authors should include a separate English-Spanish dictionary section. I also find the video segments to be very poor (and why are they exactly the same as the ones for Puntos de partida when they both have such different approaches to language acquisition?)
3-0 out of 5 stars pretty good
this is not a bad spanish book. i don't know if i would say it is great. lots of group activities that are helpful, but they are pretty simple and repetitive.they need to be a little more thoughtful and put in lots of DIFFERENT activities.one last, quite frustrating thing, there is only a spanish-english dictionary in the back.extremely irritating because this is a spanish 1-2 book, and anytime you want to look up a word, you'll need to consult another dictionary. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not awful, but not perfect either
This is an alright text book. It does what it's meant to do. A person can learn Italian from this book as long as they are also in a class as well, but it definately has some flaws. One -it needs more examples of some of the more difficult grammar points. Two - the order is strange. Why did you start with avere? Somehow essere seems like a better place to start. And the chapter themes! They pretend that they have chapters arranged by topic, but it seems very haphazard to me. Also, several major grammatical topics are missing from this book, and as a result, many of my teachers have had to give us multiple hand outs to compensate. It's ok - but it could be a lot better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource
I read this entire book across two college semesters before moving to Italy. After having spent $500 or so on Italian language books, this is one of the few that was worth the money.Even though I speak fluently, I still refer to this book frequently to resolve difficult tense questions or clarify grammar details.I highly recommend this book to any serious student.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wait for the next edition, or stick to the 4th!!
I took 3 semesters of Italian, with each semester covering 1/3 of the book, so I completed the entire book. This book is good if you follow it in a traditional classroom setting, especially since the proffessor pointed out all the mistakes in this book, which unfortunately, are quite numerous for a textbook.I have also checked out the 4th edition, which is much better than this one as it is better structured and contains useful charts,(which are now omitted)and is thoroughly proofread. The 6th edition just came out, so hopefully it is an improvement from the 5th. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I am really amazed of how much idioms and colloquial expressions you can learn just by listening to the CD. And guess what - these are idioms and phrases you REALLY hear everyday on the street, usedby most people in everyday situations. Before, my English sounded a bit "artificial" and somehow forced. Now, the more I used the idioms I learnt here, the more natural and even friendly I sound to the native speakers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Useful Book
This is a good book to read, esp. for non-native English speaker. I learn many new expressions with ease (because the book provides proper context). The reason I give 4, instead of 5, is that there are (too) many repetitions throughout the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A simple yet clever way to break into the "idiom barrier"
Remember your good old Englishtextbook which started with an introduction of the characters who would be in the dialogs throughout the units? That's how this book is laid out. Idioms are contextualized and there are various consolidation exercises between units to reinforce them. The accompanying CD is very clear and the voices convey the moods of the characters - although I must say that the man who does Bob's voice sounds incredibly boring at times as his voicedoesn't seem to show much pitch variation. Some of the idioms are alreadyknown to most high-intermediate students, but there are many others to learn, so it can certainly satisfy those studentswho resent not having enough "real-life"vocabulary in class. It may alsobe useful for the student working on his own, once the explanations are very clear. In a nutshell: It's worth buying if you're looking for a simple - yet effective - way to explore the most common idioms of American English. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of all reference grammars
This book is undoubtedly the most comprehensive grammar of the English language ever written. It is an absolute 'must have' for any non-native English speaker who wishes to use the language competently. It will even make an excellent textbook for ambitious intermediate and advanced students.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still Useful, but...
As the title and price suggest, this is a reference grammar of English, not a textbook. It's written for people who already have a grasp of basic grammatical principles. This is the sort of book that you pick up when you want to look up patterns of verb complementation, etc. Only a masochist would try to read it straight through, or to learn grammar from it.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Latin students
There is no other place to start when looking for the history of specific Latin words and phrases. This dictionary is a must for all those who have more than a passing interest in the Latin language. It is clearly laid out and the text is very readible. Overall a great resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Oxford Latin Dictionary- A Must Have
There are many reasons to recommend this superb reference work, here are a few. Firstly, as to be expected, clear and accurate definitions are given for even the most obscure words. Secondly, there is high quality in the book and binding. Thirdly, the excellent type-face makes for easy reading. And lastly, there is great pleasure in adding such a seminal work in lexography to one's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe I'm speaking Italian
I am half way through the second set of CDs in this series, but wanted to recommend this first series of CDs for learning Italian. I have tried to learn a foreign language before with no luck, so I didn't have any expectations for this course. But, it's wonderful! I am speaking Italian and having a great time learning. Not only do you learn the words and phrases, but you also learn how to pronounce each word, where to place the emphasis, and how to pronounce a sentence so that it flows. I strongly encourage anyone who is interested in learning Italian (or any other language) to use the Pimsleur series. The sets are expensive, but well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Start right here...
Pimsleur is truly the best method out there. It's price is justified by the quality of the instruction. I initially found it frustrating not having "the rules" explained to me (there is a little explanation, but not the extent that I thought was "proper" for a language course). In the end I gave up trying to puzzle out "the rules" and just enjoyed the lessons. And they are enjoyable - you are having real conversations, not the high-school "where is the red dress of the baker's daughter" stuff. I would recommend doing all 3 levels before attempting to study the written and grammatical areas of Italian. Why? Well, I've just started learning this side of the language in a formal class, and I'm breezing through it - I seem to have acquired much of the grammar subconsciously! I have much less trouble than my fellow students with the different pronunciation of things like "ce", "gli" and "sce" because I learnt the pronunciation of the words thoroughly before I was presented with the, to English-speakers, contradictory spelling. In addition, my teacher constantly praises my accent, and when I visited Italy, I was often complimented on my pronunciation. Yes, it's expensive, but worth every cent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Way to Learn Italian
I have purchased many different Italain learning systems, CDs, computer programs, etc, and this Pimsleur is fantastic. It is fun to use, progresses at a nice pace, introducing new material bit my bit, but not boring. It is focused on speaking and listening, and there is not written reinforcement for what you are hearing, but I find it easier to learn this way, then look up something when I need clarification. I bought this set after getting the first 6 Pimsleur CDs in a very inexpensive COSTCO set, then was hooked and ordered this complete Italian I course, and have not been disappointed. Order this set and you will find yourself speaking Italian quickly! ... Read more

This text is either for the very beginning beginner or a good review for the person who has been away from Spanish for a time.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good Start
I have read almost all of the book. Along with the CDs I think the set would be very good for a beginner but not enough for adequate conversation. No conjugation rules mentioned. You have to be enrolled in a spanish teaching class to fill in the defecits that this set have. Overall I think my spanish improved alot from 0% spanish to 50% now, which is not bad to a beginner....

We are a homeschooling family and we were looking for a good beginning Spanish program. This program was recommended to me by several people so I thought we would give it a try.My daughter and I are learning together and we are finding this program easy to use and alot of fun.I think it would be a great program for older elementary (my daughter is 14) - adult. The CDs are a must because they teach you the correct pronouncation for each word. The stickers are a great way to incorporate Spanish into your everyday life. Excellent program. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to learning Spanish for educational purposes and for those who are planning a trip to a Spanish speaking country. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Same Book Used by our School District
This is the same book used by our public school district. We are in one of the leading districts in the nation. The only negative I have is the price.I found it new at Walmart>Books>Textbooks for a lower price.Even they are higher than the publisher's price.Buy it here if you have confidence in your seller.I won't!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast and easy, a great way to learn!
En Espanol is a great way to learn spanish. Its chapters are set up in an easy, logical order. There are lots of review exercises and the set-up is appealing. Not only do you learn basic vocab, there are sections on cultureand history. The pages are bright and are geared toward middle/high schoolaged kids. At the end of every chapter there is a vocab list compiling allthe new words from the chapter. It also contains a Spanish/English,English/Spanish dictionary in the back for easy reference.En Espanolmakes learning spanish fun and easy. ... I would only conditionally recommend 'Teach Yourself Spanish' as a supplement to what I consider to be the very best Spanish course on the market; Behind the Wheel Spanish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book but Better with Behind the Wheel English
William Harvey's 'Ingles Para Latinos' is a classic which is loved by Spanish speakers for its ease of use, pronunciation guides and easy to learn practical basics presented in a non threatening and friendly manner.

(translation of title:Very excellent for everyone who wants to learn the language!)
4-0 out of 5 stars ¡Destinos es muy fantastico!
I'm using Destinos in a telecourse, and am having lots of fun with it, and even learning some Spanish. My listening skills have improved dramatically, since the video is the main learning tool, which forces one to sharpen up and really listen to what's going on.The workbook that accompanies Destinos is really detailed, making it possible to learn a considerable amount of Spanish grammar on one's own.Overall, the best Spanish textbook I've used yet!Adi

4-0 out of 5 stars outstanding
Rode to the Code gave me a great program on how to help my struggling students with phonemic awareness. Over time, these students began to understand the big picture of what reading is all about. We are matching letters and sounds and recognizing rhyming words and rhyming word parts. Thank you Rode to the Code! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A real disappointment
When I saw that this dictionary was based on "American English", I was excited to get it.But save your money, or, better yet, use it to buy the Oxford Russian Dictionary. You can easily cope with British spelling (e.g. centre) and you'll find a much more useful dictionary.I find it remarkable that a modern (1994) dictionary purporting to be based on American English completely omits words such as "Internet", "download", "e-mail", to say nothing of all the acronyms associated with computers.Incidentally, you can find them all in the Oxford!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very great
To put it one way, my russian professor, who is from Moldova, said that she would start using this disctionary. It is based off american english, which does make it more helpful. In the front pages gives most all of the rules of conjugating by the case, and the back appendix gives alot of proper nouns in russian. Its a really good dictionary to use, easy (heavy!), and very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than expected
This book is a lot bigger, and better than I had expected it to be. I thought it was a smaller, pocket-ish dictionary. But, it is a good sized, 1100 page book. There are plenty of definitions. This is a high quality book. Worth every dime.
