5-0 out of 5 stars Useful!
I just finished the book two days ago. I am running a student led organization this school year and felt very uneasy about parliamentary procedure. This book helped me solidify my knowledge of it and gave me confidence. It was easy to read and had very useful examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive guide for Robert's Rules
This book is a necessity for any organization that uses Robert's Rules of Order or is drafting bylaws baed on it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Roberts Rules of Order
Well organized, concise, and thorough. If you have to attend meetings that employ parlimentary procedure to maintain order, you may need this. I belong to several clubs, and have found the book to be quite helpful.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE KEY TO A SUCCESSFUL ORGANIZATION
If you participate in any organization, whether small or large, RONR is as necessary to you and your organization as your bylaws. Everything you'll need to conduct a productive meeting is contained in this book. Even after reading RONR, having it on hand in your meetings will give you the confidence and assurance that you have a ready reference right at your finger tips. Order of business, minutes, treasurer's reports are easier to produce because RONR gives you easy to follow samples. You could be the most inexperienced board member and still preside over a meeting with the tools provided in RONR. It is suggested that the President or Chair know more than anyone else on your board, however I would recommend that everyone on your board have a copy. Your whole board will be in the same book, on the same page, same line, and there will be no room for error. As you work together, everyone will be enlightened with knowledge and success.

5-0 out of 5 stars All You Need to Get Started
I'm just getting into Robert's Rules to help w/ our union meetings & this was a great book to cut through it all.The book was easy to read - providing a run down of the rules & the rational behind them. This book coupled w/ some of the quick cheat sheet-type products out there should go a long way to getting the process down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful Book
Nancy Sylvester does an excellant job of simplifying & clarifying what can seem very complicated and confusing. This book would be helpful to anyone who needs to get a handle on how to lead parliamentary type meetings. It is also quite helpful for those who simply participate in such meetings. This book is recommended to anyone who uses Robert's Rules.

I recently became President of a small non-profit group and had no idea of what Robert's Rules were. They seemed so confusing and complicated/convoluted on the surface. This book has been a great help in getting me up to speed on how to conduct a meeting and use the Rules. They are explained clearly as are the reasons why you follow certain procedures which is helpful. 5-0 out of 5 stars We don't wear wigs and robes! We're a casual, social club.
If you've always feared having to pull out the ol' Robert's Rules of Order because it was too detailed and complex for the casual social organizations in which you participated, help is here. 3-0 out of 5 stars Roberts Rules made easy
I found the book as represented and easy to read and it has all the simple answers that you might need quickly. Reading the full Roberts Rules of Order revised can take time this makes it easy to pick out the simple explanation and answers. Nice to take to the meetings for quick reference.
2-0 out of 5 stars Roberts Rules in Plain English
The book is a decent primer and is certainly more readable than Robert's original book.Of course the original and all of its editions remain an example of very incomprehensible and convoluted language even for its era. However, I have to handle large meetings of very strong-willed, intelligent people, so I found the "Plain English" book not very useful. I need to know the details and complexities of handling important meetings so that I make the right decisions.I will stick with the more sophisticated texts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Robert's Rules in Plain English

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Advice for a new chairman
This book is not based on "Robert's Rules of Order", but is an independant attempt to codify parliamentary procedure (the rules you use in meetings of a deliberative assembly). This attempt tries to get by with far fewer rules and motions then Robert's, and for the most part succeeds. I have not tried using this particular ruleset 'in anger', so I am not sure how well it works in practice, but it looks promissing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Esperanto of the "Rules of Order" genre
The book is thin and exposes a limited set of rules without which anarchy becomes the hard rule.
5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable, For Anyone Who Conducts Meetings
Fred and Peg Francis have done an amazing job. Their book is absolutely indispensable for anyone who conducts meetings or participates in democratic discussion at any level from the parliamentary right down to school boards, environmental protection groups, churches, even book clubs or social gatherings. What the Francis' have admirably succeeded in doing is cutting through the forbidding complexities of running a meeting and reducing them to a simple set of common-sense rules which anyone can follow. With this handy guide, the frustrations which accompany many meetings can be sharply reduced and democratic participation improved. Anyone who has conducted or participated in meetings and struggled with the daunting complexities of Roberts or other rule books will be thrilled at how this little book--you can read it in an hour--will smooth out the rough edges of meetings and greatly improve the harmony and satisfaction of attendees.Over the years I have presided or attended hundreds of meetings at the governmental, business, church and social levels and have often been frustrated by the difficulties of properly chairing such meetings so that all can be heard, everyone can understand the process, and the will of the majority can be formulated and prevail. Much of the difficulty arises from the fact that few have the time or inclination to study the old-style rule books, and are therefore easily intimidated, even tyrannized sometimes, by the very few who know "Roberts" Equally distressing are meetings where the Chair is ill-informed or makes dubious rulings or is swamped by Points or Order or confusion over what are acceptable motions and amendments, when to call for a vote, and so on. By clarifying these points, the Francis' book makes an important contribution to democracy. It can be readily adopted by any group, club, church or corporation and will be of lasting benefit.Speaking personally, I have sat through years of parliamentary debate and appreciate the value, and necessity, or achieving consensus in a democratic proceeding by having rules and following them. Up until now, the rules have been exceedingly complex, often confusing, and finally unsatisfactory at many levels. From here on in, those groups who adopt Democratic Rules of Order will find significant improvement in both the tenor of their meetings and the validity of the results. (Signed) Douglas Leiterman (former parliamentary correspondent)

4-0 out of 5 stars Simplified rules of order are easy to understand and apply
This book is an example of how less is more.Aftering struggling with Robert's Rules of Order (700+ pages) and various synopsisses, I was over joyed to find this common sense guide to conducting meetings. In less than 34 pages it outlines and defines all the basic rules and procedures to getting things done. While book is perfect for those completely unfamiliar with parliamentrary proceedure, it helps even the more experienced by simplifying and eliminating the more esoteric rules.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars This old version is interesting, but...
if you're looking to run a meeting using parliamentary procedure, buy the 10th ed., which has superceding rules and is in the modern English. This is a reprint of the original of 1907. However, if you just want some information on the basics of order or are wanting to see how these rules have evolved, then you might find this interesting.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does not conform to Robert's Rules
Beware: This book, besides having typographical errors and no index, does not conform at all (!) to the current edition of Robert's Rules (namely"Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised" tenth edtion, the edition recognized by parliamentarians). The editor or author has added too much mis-information and has mis-defined too many terms for this book to be considered a "condensation" or "summary" of the motions, procedures and terminology of Robert's Rules of Order, of any edition. If your bylaws say that its official parliamentary authority is (some edition of) Robert's Rules of Order, then be aware that "21st Century..." is way too different from Robert's Rules to be useful as a gentle introduction. Instead, the book will lead you to practices that contradict the procedures in Robert's Rules of Order. I would not have minded a book that condenses the older (public domain) editions, and thus LEAVES OUT detail too rarely used, but to ADD new rules and new procedures that contradict Robert's Rules of Order is deceptive, and serves to fool the innocent reader who thinks he is reading a simple introductory text to the real thing. So, beware that the procedures in "21st Century" are the author's or editor's opinions, and not parliamentary law as described in any edition of Robert's Rules. In closing, in my opinion, there are too many bad definitions and too many new (i.e., unsupported) procedures to use the name "Robert's Rules" in its title. If you are looking for an easy-reading paperback that truly conforms to Robert's Rules, without including other non-Robert (contradictory) procedures, "This ain't it, folks!"

3-0 out of 5 stars Not designed for all groups, more for corporate use
I advise a large, successful student government in Florida.I bought a copy of this book for each of my officers without really reading it, and wish I had. While it is good and helpful for explaining the standard rules of order, it doesn't always apply to a setting such as ours.Instead, it is much more useful for board meetings, and corporate business events. It takes a lot of interpretation and ignoring of some items for our use of the book.5-0 out of 5 stars Robert's Rules of Order

5-0 out of 5 stars A no-nonsense reference to the terms and procedures
Meeting Procedures: Parliamentary Law And Rules Of Order For the 21st Century by certified professional parliamentarian James Lochrie is a no-nonsense reference to the terms and procedures for organizing debate among large bodies of human beings, whether in committees of representative government or on a corporate business board of directors. Discussing the mechanics of motions, voting methods, nominations, orders of business and more, Meeting Procedures is an absolute "must-read" for anyone seeking to master the basics of these formal principles in order to better participate and communicate in business or civic meetings of any size and of diverse complexities.

5-0 out of 5 stars An attractive alternative
Lochrie's "Meeting Procedures" is a good alternative to Roberts Rules of Order Newly Revised (RONR). Both of these books are intended to be adopted by organizations as the parliamentary authority, but no matter what authority you use, "Meeting Procedures" is a valuable addition to the presiding officers bookshelf.5-0 out of 5 stars Meeting Proceduresfor everyone
This book is ideal for the president of any of the many volunteer and professional organizations across the country. Explanations of the rules governing meeting procedures are easy to understand and put into use. Mr. Lochrie takes complicated concepts and simplfies them so even an inexperienced presiding officer can run a meeting effectively and efficiently. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes Robert's Rules User-Friendly
Although this book is nearly ten years old at this point, it is still the book that makes the standard guide to parliamentary procedure most accessible. The question and answer format mirrors the way that most peoplecome at the rules to begin with. It doesn't replace the rules; it providesa clear map to them, and a clear explanation as to why they are what theyare to begin with. Ericson also helps us to see that the rules are notstatic, but alive and adaptable to the particular situation. He enables usto USE the rules rather than be used BY them. I recommend this book (alongwith the standard Rules of Order Newly Revised) for anyone who works withinan organization large enough to need rules of order. In his introduction,Ericson says, "Herein lies the premise of Notes and Comments:parliamentary procedure should assist rather than intimidate the members itserves." His book allows parliamentary procedure to do just that. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Starting Ground
I received this book as a gift from our FBLA state adviser for reference for meetings.I've only glanced over it since the parliamentarian does more of the Roberts Rules work. The parts that I have read have been extremely helpful in making me understand how to make a motion, and what follows that in a meeting. The one drawback though was that it couldn't help me through some of the more detailed stages of parliamentary procedures, but it's definitely a good starting ground for any newly elected official.
