Editorial Review

In a global economy, it is crucial for business peopleto be sensitive to cultural differences. And although the best reason for doing so may be ethical, it's great for business as well! This is an invaluable book for "doing well while doing good" in your intercultural relations, covering the protocols of appointments, business entertaining, greetings, forms of address, gestures, dress, and gifts in 60 of the nations you're most likely to be doing business. 4-0 out of 5 stars Avoiding the cultural faux pas...
Today's business world is such that you are very likely to have working relationships with global business partners. And you *should* know that "when in Rome, do as the Romans do".But what exactly is that?Terry Morrison and Wayne A Conaway bridge some of that information gap with the book Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands. This is one of those books that could help you close a big deal (or avoid killing one).
4-0 out of 5 stars A resource for me
Written for the international business traveler, this book was a great resource for me as characters in the Marketplace novels came from around the world. For my fans who keep asking me for "the protocol:" hey, start here and you tell me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing!
60 countries, and the only country in the entire continent of Africa the authors wrote about was Egypt? C'mon. While the authors do, in a similar compilation published after this one, include South Africa (the only other country in Africa included) and a few other countries, it is still a disgrace that books and compilations such as this one ignore the importance of proper business ettiqute in countries such as Kenya, Senegal, Ghana, and Tanzinia and do nothing more than perpetuate falsehoods, myths and fears about doing business in the aforementioned African countries and many others. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fast, easy and delicious!
"Get Togethers" contain some wonderfully delicious recipes!
5-0 out of 5 stars Rachel multi-tasks!
More fine, quick recipes from one of my favorite cooks.Rachel knows how to reduce a recipe to its basics without compromising the taste. On the day it arrived, we found a recipe that had to be shared -- the Chili Casserole.I look forward to trying most of the others.I go back to Rachel Ray's cookbooks time and again -- many of her recipes have become standards in my cooking. But she can sure multi-task!I rarely do one up in thirty minutes until I have done it several times.

1-0 out of 5 stars ALL of her books share the same major fault....
Don't get me wrong, I love her shows, it is great to see how she pulls it all together in the 30 minutes without seeming rushed. The recipes, for the most part, are pretty healthy and have good variety. The lack of pictures doesn't bother me, as she's not really into foo-foo presentation with raspberry sauce swirled half-a-mile away on the edge of the dessert plate, imho totally wasting perfectly good raspberry sauce....

I gave this to my sister for her birthday and she loved the fact that I'd bought her a suitable girlie present. I definitely earnt brownie points.

What you have here is the book that's described as "the book that every woman needs to buy". Sold? Yeah, but only if you can get it cheap enough. And I'm talking DEAD cheap. Thankfully, my copy was cheap, and I also didn't buy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book everyone should read
This is wonderful book explaining what etiquette is really about. One will learn everything -- from how to dress, table manners, office setup, how to print business cards to how to prepare resume.I would recommend to everyone to read it regardless if they are working or not. While I do not agree with some of the rules regarding "who pays for lunch" - I would say that this is a book everyone should read and understand because it will improve their interactions with others.

4-0 out of 5 stars Little Book of Etiquette
When I first saw the book I started laughing.I didn't realize the book was going to be so small. When it says a "little book" it means a little book.Once I started reading the book I was amazed. All the little no-no's, I was doing.I even did a class presentation based on dining etiquette, and I used pointers from the book for a hands-on demostration. Our grouped received an A+ on our presentation. Many of my class mates have also ordered this book as well.I really wanted to know more about dining etiquette and this book did the trick.

4-0 out of 5 stars A little book offers much!
This book is very handy in assisting our more modern society with the fine details of everyday dining. There are eight chapters dealing withsubjects such as dos and don'ts, table talk, the business meal, eatingvarious foods, a step-by-step explanation of meal courses, forms ofservice, and more.I love pages 26-27 -- they are probably the higlight ofthe book: a graphic display of a formal place setting. It is amazing thatso much information is presented in such a small book, yet it is notdifficult to read. Questions, both large and small, are answered in thefirst chapter, and the rest of the book gives wonderful detailedinformation, descriptions and examples.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great planner!
A few friends of mine went through planning a wedding and they shared later that it was almost a nightmare because there are sooooo many things that you have to plan and organize usually on the run. I am in a committed relationship from so long but didn't feel good enough in bed to propose her. After I turned from average into a great lover thanks to the bestseller Scientfically guaranteed male multiple orgasms and ultimate sex, I eagerly selected this book for the planning. After all if you do THIS part of the process right, it will be easier during the organization of the event. Carley Roney and the guys from the site did a great job and reveal step-by-step how to plan everything in great details. There are numerous glossaries, worksheets, and tips that make this book a must have. It is very affordable and I am sure that it is one of the books that will help you to start your new life as a couple in the best way.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unreasonable
I've read three different wedding planning books, and this one is absolutely the worst.I actually took this book quite seriously when I first began planning my wedding, but then after going through all the different tasks involved with planning the wedding, I re-read the book to see if I missed anything or could do anything better. After spending a few hours re-reading this book, I was shocked at all the misleading information in it... not to mention the snobbiness of the person/people who wrote it!I was so mad I almost threw this useless book straight in the garbage!
1-0 out of 5 stars I have never received this book
I ordered this book in June and here it is August and I have never received it. I never have any problems with the private dealers they are prompt and efficient. Don't know why it should be any different from amazon. Last tracking I could find on it was in Phila. some where. I don't live in Phila., nor do I have time to spend tracking. If I had that kind of time I would just go to the store. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun
My husband and I sit down with this every once in a while and pick out questions to ask each other. It's a great way to learn more about your spouse and spend time communicating instead of watching TV.

5-0 out of 5 stars more uses than I thought
I got this book to use for a discussion group of Mothers Of PreSchoolers, and found that it works for any group of people. To get familiar with it, I took it on a family vacation. We picked it up while waiting for a craft show to open and three generations of my family had a great time.Plenty of good questions for our ages, 34-82 years old.We enjoyed the book and each other's company and the time went by very quickly.I think it would even be good for my kids, as long as you pull only appropriate questions.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Book of Questions; 1001 conversation starters
I bought this book before leaving on a one week vacation to the beach with my boyfriend of eight months, knowing that we would be driving twelve hours each way.He is not a person who willinging gives up information, not a chatty person by nature. And as a shy person, I never know what to ask in order to get a conversation going. In the past, a friend had given me a set of conversation flashcards that worked well to get conversations started and I had learned alot about my sweetie. So, I thought a book like this would work well for conversation starters. And I was right!!!!The subjects range from light and airy to deep and spiritual.I found that browsing the sections for questions that interested me, brought amazing revelations about the person I thought I knew!!Obviously, there are certain questions any couple may want to avoid, especially after a divorce, but, the book gives you an automony to ask questions you might not have had the courage to ask before. And, to my surprise, when it was my turn to drive, about 30 minutes into the drive, he picked up the book and looked for questions for me!!!!!Now, I have a greater knowledge of life situations that my man has gone through, his views on things and opinions.A half dozen questions out of this book was all we needed to open up subjects that had never been contemplated and kept us engaged in interesting, light hearted conversation for many hours.I definitely would recommend this book for anyone wanting an avenue to getting to know another person without them feeling they are being "interrogated" !!!!!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Strong Tips Here
Axtell vividly shows how common sense is NOT enough to get you through all social or business situations around the world. Travelers ignore Axtell at their own peril.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
This book is good to read in general terms as it attempted to explain the gestures from all around the world.Sometimes, it's amusing to read & at times, I would be loss for words as what I thought was the right things to do in certain countries is actually considered as rude or obscene.Perhaps, it's the kind of book that you can read in the plane or just as a matter of interest. The presentation is rather text book-ish with bullet points, occasional pictures to ease readers' boredom, something like a PowerPoint presentation.I guess that denotes the writer's background being a prominent guest speaker.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, interesting and funny

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Success!
Am an admitted Chiarello fan but also a serious, experienced cook.Found this new book to be as good as his last one.Love the pantry recipes - having these extras onhand make the ordinary extraordinary just like he promised.Best section is the side dishes. If you are looking for new dishes for your vegetables, this is a great source. Most are good enough to stand on their own and do in this carnivore's home frequently. If you like things just a little different - buy this book. The recipes are clear, the writing entertaining and your friends & family will be impressed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good recipes, beautiful photography and plenty of unique ideas on serving.
To be honest I don't watch many of Michael's shows but the book is beautiful and perfect for those who are constantly on the lookout for entertaining recipes and ideas.
1-0 out of 5 stars WHERE does The Food Network get these people???
Michael Chiarello needs to stick with the non-Italian dishes because dude doesn't have a clue how to pronounce Italian nor, to compund the problem, does he know the reason why he cooks the Italian dishes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book-
When my son was approaching his 12th birthday, he was forgetting the good manners he had before - everything was a "joke" for him, however, I was afraid he could be offending people, friends, with his behavior.I gave him this book for his birthday. When he read the title "How Rude" he got mad.Later, I saw him taking this book to his room and saw him reading it.Since then, every night he was reading a part.A week later he confessed that this was a great book and he thanked me for it.Any guidance from parents sounds like "nagging" - this book guides teenegers (and pre-teens)giving them good tips.Needless to say, my son improved a lot - he's back to "normal" and we all read this book because is very funny.I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious But A Bit Immoral
At 465 pages, this nonfiction book is longer than many fiction books. Who knew there was so much to say about manners? But apparently, there is, and Dr. Packer deals with it in a light, amusing way that had me laughing so hard I actually fell on the floor. It also includes some valuable information known to few -i.e. "don't floss your teeth before having sex".
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Most teenagers will love this book but not all. One grandson and one granddaughter thought it was very helpful, a third grandchild did not like it. It deals with real kids' issues and problems and gives then actual things they can say, as well as what not to say.It even has some very good advice for how teenagers can talk to their parents.Best of all, it has lots of humor in it.We read parts of it aloud with a teenage grandson and we were all laughing. It has good advice for non-teenagers too. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I'm using this book as part of homeschooling my preschoolers. It is great to get ideas from, and the children love learning and practicing new manners. This book not only serves for the good of my children, but also in reminding me of certain things as well. Family life has been much more pleasant since implementing the ideas in this book. My only complaint is that it should have been organized by topic and had tabs for quick reference. Otherwise, it's a good book if you take the time to look for what you want.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Information, Poor Layout
This book is FULL of great ideas and information. It is however, listed in calendar format which cannot really be used practically.February 16 is about swimiming pools and unless they are indoors, not many are swimming at this time of year. And there aren't exactly 365 differnent manners because some of them are repeated and build on each other.

Editorial Review

Miss Manners' down-to-earth collection of wisdom and pithy wit is a joy to read. Under the chapter on Table Manners, she notes "the inevitable slippage of spaghetti from the fork back onto the plate is Nature's way of controlling human piggishness" and suggests "a quick motion of the wrist, such as one uses to shake down a thermometer, will remove excess ketchup" from French fries. From common courtesy and proper attire to the etiquette of weddings, Martin knows right from wrong and sensible from rude. But this is no prissy, preachy tome. Miss Manners is very funny and has impressive insight into life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Etiquette Reference
If you can only buy one etiquette reference book, make it this one.Miss Manners is second to none; her knowledge is extensive, her instruction is flawless, and her tone is pointed yet compassionate.
5-0 out of 5 stars Miss Manners rides again!
As a career reference librarian, I have answered probably several thousand inquiries from the public regarding the details of wedding invitations and condolence letters, and whether you're "allowed" to wear white shoes in months with an "R." Those are just "etiquette" questions and most of them I can answer from Emily Post or Amy Vanderbilt -- but for the rationale behind *manners,* I turn always to Judith Martin, the leading authority on civilized behavior for a quarter-century, combining sometimes starchy asperity with a home-grown love of American democracy and classlessness. Who else could lay out so lovingly the rules for a formal dinner la russe, followed by thoroughly sensible guidelines for the civilized use of cell phones, email, and instant-messaging? And you won't find her wishy-washing when it comes to inviting same-sex couples to dinner or organizing a shower for an unwed mother; to her, people are people and all are deserving of polite treatment, if not always respect. 2-0 out of 5 stars Good but short and not Great
Covers several items but is somewhat limited.
4-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read that covers the basics
I bought this book hoping to be both entertained and instructed about how traditional gentlemanly ways should be applied or adapted to our times. In many respects, Essential Manners for Men did not disappoint; the author's impressive credentials are indeed sufficient to make one listen and take notes about everything etiquette.
1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title; and book contains more obvious than helpful information
This book is probably not helpful to anyone seeking more than VERY basic social skills.I did not find anything particularly informative. The writing is long-winded, is generally an midly annoying, boring lecturing style. At many points, it actually seemed as if the author was not a man, but rather, someone's wife carrying on about the commonplace, stale female gripes and frustrations about how filthy are their men. Where's the male backbone? Not here. The male author seemed to cowtow to the female of the house; it actually looks like he mirrored the concerns of various women consulted and then determined that essential manners require full male compliance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory
It is precisely what it claims to be. If you're going to come over here, you should read it. So much information, all in one place. My life would've been much easier if I'd read this five years ago, but perhaps Who Moved My Rice? wouldn't be quite so much fun.
4-0 out of 5 stars A consultant's review
Excellent guidelines, especially for larger corporations. Can be used by smaller companies that have some expertise in international business, or that are working with a consultant in the subject area.I plan to use it as reference in my classes for small business on the subject of initiating business in China.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and wonderfully practical
As someone who was about to embark on business in mainland China, and who has never ventured further north than Hong Kong, this book has been a god-send.

1-0 out of 5 stars The author needs to follow what she says...
The authos like someone has said earlier is a good observe of human behavior and practices. Each time she re-enforces the idea that people are extremely impolite about things... I just wonder if she herself does follow it. There is no notion of not ranting about one thing over and over again. This is "effing" joke for the intellectual mind. To summarize the author actually is very good with english, in that she creates an entire book out a material that is worth about a page and a half at its very best.
5-0 out of 5 stars Talk to the Hand and Look into the Mirror
Lynn Truss has written another witty book that will stick well beyond the initial read. "Talk to the Hand" is a good whack to the head. In "Talk," Truss defines and analyzessix areas in which our dealings with strangers seem to be getting more unpleasant and inhuman.
2-0 out of 5 stars Are people really that bad?
I started the book and laughed at the beginning. Then she became to me somewhat egocentric. Now, this is a Brit writing this and I'm sure they are different than us. First, service people tend to be nicer here in America and don't behave as boorish. If for no other reason if enough people complain to the management, they would be fired. I know once I complained about a service person at the supermarket they were fired on the spot (not my intention but apparently she was a repeat offender). And I've never had a stranger tell me to "EFF OFF"...yet. And never had a small child swear at me.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Cookbook!
This cookbook is absolutely fantastic. As are all of Ina Garten's books.I have cooked at least half of the recipes and they never fail to get rave reviews. The recipes use common ingredients which are easy to find and no fancy techniques are required. It is also nicely illustrated.Watch out though if you are "fat" conscious!Low-fat is not her style!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as her other books, but a good addition
I wouldn't start
