4-0 out of 5 stars Good Advice for a new chairman
This book is not based on "Robert's Rules of Order", but is an independant attempt to codify parliamentary procedure (the rules you use in meetings of a deliberative assembly). This attempt tries to get by with far fewer rules and motions then Robert's, and for the most part succeeds. I have not tried using this particular ruleset 'in anger', so I am not sure how well it works in practice, but it looks promissing.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Little Outdated
This book needs a revision and bad. This book was first published in 1992 and was first revised....never.There are a few interesting techniques in this book but they all seem a little outdated. There is even a section with old early 90's slang.Read this book for it's humor but do not take it seriously

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time...
This book is a waste of time and money.I was turned off because the author actually advises you to lie and misrepresent yourself in many situations. While reading the book I spent a lot of time trying to figure out if the advice was a joke, like during the section, "Practice you mingle on a nerd."The advice is clumsy and probably won't help.If someone comes up to you at a party and says, "how's life treating you?" they probably read this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Lying
I bought this book in hopes of picking up a few simple tips on how to mingle among a new crowd. As I read through the first chapter I was, to say the least, very disappointed with the first advice... "picture everybody naked."How many times have we heard that one? And, why am I paying money to hear it again?Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ageless advice for "civil" conduct.
Whether this little 30 page book is worth the price or whether George Washington copied these as a penmanship excercise from an english translation of some 16th century French Jesuit writings is immaterial. 1-0 out of 5 stars Freely available
George Washington is one of few people in the history of the world to lead a major revolution for freedom and then not "betray the revolution".For that we owe him all the reverence he gets and then some. But as to his being some sort of brilliant 14-year old with these tremendous insights, it's not correct.Washington copied these rules from a translation of a work produced in the 1500's by Jesuits. The Jesuits actually had a few more.Unfortunately, we can't really give him credit for recognizing the importance of the rules and feeling a need to copy them - the copy was most likely assigned as an exercise in penmanship.3-0 out of 5 stars THIS costs ten bucks?!
Let me first say that I'm a George Washington fan.I've read a few biographies of "the first in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen," and was excited to find this work was available in Amazon.com.Not only would I own the only book Washington ever wrote (although it was written at age 14 and was supposed to be a personal list of do's and do not's, not a book), but I would gain valuable insight into Washington's personal mannerisms as he consulted his old list frequently.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Woman can gain some insight
I read all the reviews and still bought the book. I found it charming and a reminder of how important it is to dress our best. We as a society have really gone too far with Pajamas and slippers worn to the grocery store and flip flops accepted at the White House. How we dress really does affect how strangers see us and a first impression can never be made a second time. I just took what the author was trying to say and applied it to my life. I may not agree with everything exactly, but I did learn from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars In appreciation of Genevieve Antoine Dariaux
I love this book. Conservative (some would say dated), it is full of timeless, classic advice - especially for the working wardrobe.
3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful but dated
Follow all the rules in this book and you will be the most elegant women of your day -- if your day was the 1950s.Advice like an elegant woman never wears black in the morning just doesn't fit the needs of a professional urban woman (like me) who has several black suits in her closet. And this book isn;t trying to help you develop an interesting flair of your own -- this book's goal is to give you the rules to follow to be conservatively tasteful in all occasions.Still, it's helpful to know what the most absolutely proper thing to wear is, if only to decide how far from absolutely proper you want to veer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for ESL Students
I teach English in Buenos Aires.I bought this book for my students. It is a great book because it explains the English slang in Spanish so they can relate to it.

3-0 out of 5 stars lacks pronunciation guide
I found this book helpful, it is more than comprehensive in terms of its scope and the categories make it easy to navigate. My big problem with this compilation is that there is no pronunciation given in the definitions, so there is no way to know how each English word is to be pronounced. This is so important because English pronunciation is very irregular.I had some of my ESL students just throw this book out because they couldn't make anything of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Words you can rely on!
This book is very practical. It contains a good selection of commonly used words in the English language. It is a handy book that you can take anywhere with you. It is indeed a very useful, thin dictionary that not only provides the meaning of each word listed, but also gives you a sentence using each word in its right context. Good value as well. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Trashcan filler
This book might be the worst book I have read in years. Susan Roane has filled 240 pages with more or less obvious information like OAR approach. Observe, Ask a Question, Reveal your Thought. I don't wanna spend much time on reviewing this book, but I'll tell you: If you expect something that analyzes, refers to any scientific papers (or any stuidies at all) or puts any psychological aspects in the mix, then forget this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific resource - made my life so much easier! And a beautiful wedding.
I was asked to officiate for my brother (who grew up Jewish) and his fiance (who grew up Protestant), as neither of them are religious, but wanted to have a wedding that both families would feel comfortable with. After getting ordained online, I had a huge challenge ahead of me - how to do something beautiful, personal, and would make everyone happy.Well, this book did it for me!It's about 1/3 explanations on wedding ceremonies and things to be aware of that could be sensitive to either side, 1/3 sample ceremonies, and 1/3 a whole bunch of suggested pieces/readings/explanations under each ceremony component - 7 ideas you could use here, 4 ideas here...It made creating their ceremony a breeze, eliminating many of the expected arguments/discussions, and led to a beautiful ceremony. Thanks Rabbi Lerner!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource!
I am a Catholic woman marrying a Jewish man.We were very fortunate that my priest was supportive of our marriage and provided me with the standard Catholic booklet outlining the typical components of a Catholic wedding. But we were being married outside of the traditional mass and wanted to include my fianc's Jewish heritage as well. The rabbi we were working with suggested this book.It is a great tool to help in the planning process.Rabbi Lerner provides an explanation of various traditions, gives a few sample outlines and then includes an appendix with various wording for each part of the ceremony.I could not have planned the Jewish half of our ceremony without this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Making Interfaith Marriage Ceremony Inclusive

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Ideas for a Maid of Honor Beginner!
The friend I chose to be my Maid of Honor had never been in a wedding party before, and so I knew she'd need a little help/instruction in knowing what her duties would include. This is a great little book that has helped her be an amazing Maid of Honor. In addition, the book has a great look to it, and really isn't very expensive. In asking someone to be in your wedding, why not give them this book and ask them in an inscriptioninside the front cover?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift for your Bridesmaids
I was looking for a small gift to send my bridesmaids and I came across this book. It is a fun little guide for those new to the wedding world,as some of my bridesmaids are. As a wedding novice myself, being the first of my friends to marry,it was a good heads up on what to ask of my attendants and what mistakes to avoid. The feedback from my bridesmaids has also been very positive, they enjoyed the light witty style mixed with the helpful guide. I am very glad I found this book and would suggest it to anyone who wants to treat their bridesmaids!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the first-time bridesmaid and a witty read
Ibought this after being asked to be a MOH in the first wedding I'd been to in years. It was a fun read and laid out every step for a novice like myself - I bought another at the same time but barely read it.If you want to make the whole thing go smoothly, get points for being an awesome bridesmaid, and get some laughs all the while, this is the book to pick. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fun to Reah Over and Over
I bought this book, thinking it was written in the present era. I seriously got about halfway through before I realized how old it was. But that in no way took away from my enjoyment of this book. I've read it half a dozen times now, and it's always a complete delight. This book is timeless in its advice (well, mostly) and I believe a lot of people, and not just women, would benefit from reading it. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys their feminity even just a little bit. You'll love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Guide!
This book was so old fashioned, mostly in the beginning that it was entertaining.I did skim over some parts but found the book to be a great read with many things we all need to be reminded of.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting book.
Before you purchase this book, you may want to know it was first published in 1938.I didn't know this when I bought it, but I am glad I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Busting myths - being a lady isn't about being subserviant
Before this book the word lady symbolized a New England society debutant in a courtsy at her debut. It seemed restrictive but this book offers a more expanded and actually quite inspiring interpretation... being a lady does include stating your mind, having a leadership role, enjoying adventure, and so forth. It's like an etiquette coach once said - class does not equal cash. Ladies can be strong, wise, outspoken, but at its core ... it is about having self-respect and learning from our mistakes with grace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming & inspiring!
I really enjoyed this book, and learned several things that I wanted to know, and several things about which I knew nothing and am glad I know now so I can change my behavior or actions accordingly. It's a mix of common sense, golden rules, defining what a lady is and what it means - a very positive and enchanting term! -do's and don'ts, and how to handle certain situations. In addition, there's enlightening quotes and short anecdotes from ladies we all admire and respect. It does cover some etiquette as well, but is not an all-out etiquette guide.Generally, a lady has good etiquette. For etiquette specifics one may not be certain about, references to other excellent books are provided. This is a quick and easy read and the needed information can be found without difficulty and assimilated without being overwhelmed.I found this book charming, and would recommend it to others seeking practical information on polishing one's image and wanting to feel like and be a lady in the many roles in which we work and live!

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Pure - and a Light Snack for Thought
I picked up this book because the title intrigued me - perhaps mostly because I am from an era that looked at the title "Lady" with more than a bit of contempt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, funny, a great read for any guy
My bride gave me this even though I didn't think I'd help out too much. But I had a few questions and this really helped. It was funny, which helped, since any book that takes things too seriously wouldn't work for me.I had questions about the budget, since I was paying for somethings and trying to figure out who would pay for the rest, and I also had questions about invitations, who to invite, etc. This worked for me.I will pass it on to friends when they get married.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pracitcal AND funny, a good mix
This book has a lot of good practical advice, like when to get a marriage license. For someone getting married out of state, this was very helpful.I also thought some of the money-saving tips were unique and not your standard fare. There was a part on dealing with problem guests that has been very helpful since we've had to deal with a lot of these types of people and as the groom I usually have to smoothe over a few egos and play peacemaker. To top it off, there's a great section about bachelor parties goes beyond other books and talks about how people really feel about strip clubs, both men and women.
5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, informative, and personal
Doug Gordon's witty writing style guides the otherwise clueless groom through the preparatory steps leading up to the wedding. Thebook is a fun, educating read, and is best accompanied by perusing the author's blog; by the end, you'll feel like you actually lived the experience with him. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Gentleman
Flusser's "Dressing the Man" is vastly superior in terms of both content and comprehensiveness. Generally speaking, I found the "Gentelemen" book series to be either common sense or just plain wrong. If you want a very short reference guide, though, this is better than nothing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Additional Resource
I bought this for my husband (the dapper clothes horse) just because I saw it in my Gold Box.He is a strict adherent to Flusser, so I took a risk and ordered this because it was low priced.
4-0 out of 5 stars Amusing and worthwhile
This book is both helpful and entertaining. Its style, which amounts to a compilation of aphorisms--some of them clever--makes it an easy read.
