4-0 out of 5 stars Better for a bit older child
I read the other reviews before buying this book. I will echo what they say in that this is a great resource for teaching manners in a variety of circumstances. My only other comment would be it is directed towards a child of about age 8 and up. While it can be manipulated and worked a bit to be for a younger age, it is my opinion that it is better suited towards an older child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Manners Made Easy
This is an excellent book and it has ready to teach lessons that are fun. I just love it. I ordered several books and this one is the best so far.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not like the magazine at all
I wish I hadn't bought this book.I love the magazine so I was hoping that the book would be like a whole bunch of the magazines condensed into one huge helpful book.Unfortunately, that is not the case.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Best of MS Living Weddings
The pictures are wonderful but the specifics are very limited. I think this book is a wonderful place to start to get ideas for colors, style, etc. but you will need more specific information to actually plan a wedding.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Darn Good!!!
I bought this wedding planner for my nanny. I used the free one from State Farm, which they give to their insured, and that was okay. I splurged for her because she was completely unorganized. Within a few days she started bringing it to the house with all her paper work. I could hear her making her calls and checking off her lists. I asked her and she said it was very good. She had a planner form Barns and Noble and it was completely useless. The only complaint she had was the same as everyone else...having to photocopy the guest list. I can see if you are having 300 people, but there is only one page. I think for the money you should get enough for your average sized wedding. Other than that, it's great. It also has lots of ideas and pictures of some of Martha's great work and ideas. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Text
Should be required reading and taught in every high school (freshman year would be best) in the land. The World would be a far, far better place if this were so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank heavens for Miss Manners
I've read some horrible "etiquette" books in the past few months, written by people who confuse fashion with courtesy and retaliatory revenge with civil public behavior. Miss Manners is the real deal. This book belongs in every household. Long may she wave.

5-0 out of 5 stars firm yet gentle, humorous yet authoritative
Judith Manners does a marvelous job of presenting manners to the busy family of today, where courtesy and consideration could get lost in the shuffle of demanding schedules. She has a light touch but it is underlined with authority; she writes humorously but her topics are serious. Firmly, gently, and unerringly, she writes of how to behave in every situation. (She could have been the quintessential Southern Belle of an earlier era.)Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretentious Fluff Jackie would have abhorred this book
I do not recommend this book.None of the so-called tips are even relevant to regular people and only apply to Jackie. In my opinion the authors did not cast her in a favorable light and this book only serves to make her appear spoiled and a snob, which from what I have read about her in other books, I know is not how she was.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fun & Also Meaningful
This book is combination self-help, etiquette, beauty/fashion, and memoir. In other words, it is a lot of fun -- on the beach I enjoyed reading about the clothes Jackie wore and her profligate spending, and on a more serious note I was very interested to learn more about her thoughts on parenting unspoiled children and maintaining strength and presence through the vagaries of life.If you at all enjoy the idea of Jackie, and you enjoy self-help books, you are bound to really love this one.My only complaints to the authors:there are too many repetitions; if one reads the book straight through from beginning to end, certain phrases and ideas are repeated needlessly where exposition is not called for. Also, there are too many typos for authors with this pedigree.Still, a great and quick read!
5-0 out of 5 stars Lessons from a Role Model are the fastest way to learn
It is wise advice that the best way to improve one's sense of etiquette and polish is to identify someone you admire and learn by their example. In the world of savoir faire and diplomacy, Jackie was known for her style and grace. A saint she was not but in pure terms of manners ... she was known for them. So in the manners department she is one to watch, along with Queen Rania of Jordan, Queen Noor of Jordan, and modern class acts such as Natalie Portman and Kiera Knightley. Jackie belongs to an era where manners were held in much higher esteem and counted for something. Sometimes the old school is worth keeping current. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a single thing I would do
Thank goodness I checked this book out from the library before buying it!I flipped through the whole 250-page book in literally 15 minutes. There is a ton of print in teeny tiny font.Personally, I don't care that much for what Colin Cowie has to say, I am more interested in the pictures that he gathers to give a visual image of a wedding.I didn't read any of it because it was so small and there seemed to be so much that I can only imagine how much useless filler was in there.
5-0 out of 5 stars I got this book for a different reason
While this book is a FANTASTIC book for those who want inspiration for those starting a wedding... I bought this book for an entirely different reason. I am an artist and I am always looking for books with fantastic photography to help inspire my drawings and paintings. This book has some AMAZING photography and has some absolutely sensual moments. The mood is set throughout the book, very full of life and sensuality and unbelievably fresh. The array of flowers, the silkiness of the dresses, the ambience of the swagging fabrics, the smoothness of the linen tablecloths, it is all eye candy.

This is a very cute book. It is more for older kids than preschoolers (I bought it for my daughter who is 8) It was worth the money and my daughter enjoyed it very very much, she even brought it to school and the teacher loved it as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Today's World Has Some Shortcomings.
Etiquette are the rules to apply toward others in public. When you work in the public sector, there are such a thing as manners and treating others as you want to be treated. In Sunday's local paper, there was an article "Do clothes still make the man -- or woman?" in which a former chief deputy clerk in the District Court gives accounts of how the judges treated jury members and defendants who were not properly dressed according to his wishes. Ties were required as was dress wear instead of just being clean and properly groomed. He bases his account on the 'Andy Griffith show' which still plays on local television, and used Amy Vanderbilt's GUIDE TO GRACIOUS LIVING about how to greet people on the street. Well, he is an older man, granted, but he does not follow his own advice. I saw him coming out of the History Center on the main street of town; when he acknowledged he knew me, he turned and walked around the block so as not to have to converse with me. He criticized the way people dress today in public and asks, "Whatever happened to class?"
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT Book
I am a friend of Mrs. Tuckerman and she worked really hard on this book. I read this book all the time. I use it for every occasion. Give these great ladies some credit, they want to be a little old fashined then it's thier choice. If you don't likethis book then don't read it or buy it. I am a devoted fan of this book. Mrs. Tuckerman is the sweetest and coolest lady her age. I myself am a asipring writer ( I write fun news type stories).

3-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment, but still an authority
My mother has a copy of the original edition, so I grew up treating Vanderbilt's work as a constant reference for social graces.Naturally, I was overjoyed to learn that a new edition had made an appearance.Unfortunately, I was disappointed.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for those who only recently arrived to the United States
...and also for those who have at least advanced or intermediate skill in English language. In my case I bought this book hoping to enrich my general conversational vocabulary.I have NOT achieved my personal goal since the book is full of most simple phrases that are very quickly learned from daily communication by anyone who lived in the US for more than 2 months (Thanks!Sorry 'bout that! See you! How you've been? and similar.)
5-0 out of 5 stars That is just what I (a ELS student) Want !!!
I watched a lot of American Movies and Sitcoms. There are too much expressions that I cannot really understand ~! They are all composed of simple words, but when they are together, I just cannot get it. Like "Might as well","who do you think you are kidding",and tons of others....This book explains a lot to me. The entries in this book are really used very frequently in American Movies and on TV. I heard almost all of them before. It teaches me much more than my ESL classes !! ELS students ~buy it and Enjoy it !!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for Foreign Adults
I have very intelligent adult students who are trying to improve their English. Most of them are from East Asian backgrounds. This book is very much enjoyed by my students because it gives them an insight into phrases that people use around them often. Most people don't realize how much they use these phrases. 3-0 out of 5 stars Roberts Rules made easy
I found the book as represented and easy to read and it has all the simple answers that you might need quickly. Reading the full Roberts Rules of Order revised can take time this makes it easy to pick out the simple explanation and answers. Nice to take to the meetings for quick reference.
2-0 out of 5 stars Roberts Rules in Plain English
The book is a decent primer and is certainly more readable than Robert's original book.Of course the original and all of its editions remain an example of very incomprehensible and convoluted language even for its era. However, I have to handle large meetings of very strong-willed, intelligent people, so I found the "Plain English" book not very useful. I need to know the details and complexities of handling important meetings so that I make the right decisions.I will stick with the more sophisticated texts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Robert's Rules in Plain English

5-0 out of 5 stars A focus on 'milestone' birthdays from one to one hundred
BIG BIRTHDAYS: THE PARTY PLANNER CELEBRATES LIFE'S MILESTONES isn't just another birthday book for parents: it's a focus on 'milestone' birthdays from one to one hundred and provides a party planner's experience gained from planning such for famous stars and personalities. You may recognize him from his TV appearances: a fair for elegance, humor, and design lend to a party planner that pairs delicious food recipes with decorating tips. Color photos throughout capture the finished products and excitement of his approach.
5-0 out of 5 stars a MUST read
Having a summer birthday has never been much fun, it somehow always goes uncelebrated. This year I was inspired to throw my own festivities. What was supposed to be a quick search for party ideas turned into a total body experience after delving into David Tutera's book Big Birthdays. In his book he executed and fabulously captured five birthday parties exploring the five senses (look, scent, texture, sound and taste) through each event. His tips ('Tutera Tips') were the most helpful; it was almost as if he could hear my questions and answer my thoughts concerning each party scenario. After my celebration they will have to reprint the book, Tutera's ideas were truly an inspiration. This book is a must-have for any status of event planner.

This year my grandmother ceebrated her 80th birthday, and with that, I wanted to surprise her with an elgant dinner party for some of her closest family and friends. Having never embarked on such a thing before, I set out to Amazon to find a book that would help me from beginning to end. David Tutera's latest book, Big Birthdays, gave me many great ideas. I immediately fell in love with the sophisticated White-On-White dinner party. The instructions and focus on details allowed me to easily recreate the atmosphere and ultimately throw a spectacular party!! I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to host such an event and will definately look to David Tutera in the future for inspiration for another great get together! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lern about USA
This book is different from that I expected. I thought about a classical Idioms Dictionary. Althought it's a good book that introduce not only American idioms but American way of life too.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on American English to a foreigner
Very informative and the content is carefully categorized so it's quite easy to find what you want.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Guide!
Language and culture go together, and I was happy to see this book emphasize both.My students live in the United States and need to understand how Americans speak, so this book was really helpful.I also use Whaddaya Say, 2nd Edition with them so they understand how these idioms are really said. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Another great addition from Martha
For devotees, this planner yet another great addition to the library of Martha.I am planning my wedding for June 2007 and use it to keep track of all my "current" clippings, vendors and planning notes.Though I do like the included planning sections, most modern brides will find themselves keeping track of their guests/budget/vendors on spreadsheets so all the extra creamy white pages will probably be discarded.
3-0 out of 5 stars I found a better one
Ok so I've been looking for the right binder for a while. I'm doing an Indian wedding so I wanted something that can cover ALL the questions. "The Bride's Essential Wedding Planner - Deluxe edition" by Amy Nebens is a better one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Planner!
All other planners I looked at were either too small, or had a really gaudy, loud cover on them. This one is absolutely perfect with a beautiful, understated light-green cover and room for information given by vendors on 8.5X11 paper. I think one of the most helpful things is the flower section...divided by color with beautiful pictures and a description of each kind. So helpful for someone like myself who doesn't know a whole lot about flowers! Also helpful are the plastic sheets that hole business cards and other misc. items. I love this planner! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best "Boundaries" Follow-Up So Far!
Many people would think by now the authors had gotten all the mileage possible from the "Boundaries" theme. After writing a best-selling book by the same title and a number of follow-ups, surely there is nothing left to cover.Cloud and Townsend here however, hit another home run by providing precious insights on how to have difficult conversations with the people around us, confronting others with the truth in Christian love.I won't go into detail with all the many positive aspects of this title -- I just realize as a pastor who has dealt with difficult people situations for over 25 years, this book is a God-send.I wish I had read it years ago.
5-0 out of 5 stars I've been looking for this book all my life.
I've noticed that when I am around people I see often who seem to be unreasonable, aggressive, abusive, or selfish, I often withdraw emotionally. If confronting the person feels costly or risky, I sometimes stuff down my feelings or become confused about how to continue ifI'm not sure the person is as committed to wanting a good relationship as I am.
