2-0 out of 5 stars good laugh, not much else
mildly humorous, yet nearly completely devoid of useful information.imaginative language: keep a dictionary on hand.look here if seeking a few good laughs from a couple of witty fellas, dont if pursuing applicable advice.

1-0 out of 5 stars Witty but devoid of content
In the midst of life I felt the need to look for a little guidance in the "gentlemanly".This book delivered very, very little truly helpful information.I imagine I could have produced a book like this back in the day, with plenty of alcohol on board and witty friends around the keyboard...It's cleverly written and modestly entertaining, but really not at all what I was looking for.
3-0 out of 5 stars No surprises, but a worthwhile book
This book was basically what I was expected. There are a lot of good pointers, yet most of them are common sense ideals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Tool for Any Desk
Personal Notes: How to Write from the Heart for Any Occasion by Sandra E. Lambhad thought many times of writing a book on how to write personal notes, a nearly lost social art-form; however, I'm glad I never got around to it because I could not have written the book nearly so insightfully as Sandra. She combines the "how to's" of polite and pertinent note writing with wisdom of the spirit and heart of both the sender and receiver of the notes. Not only does she guide you in how to write notes, she also guides you in the psychology and empathy required to write from your heart. You'll learn how toput yourself in another's shoes in order to know how and when to reach out witrh a note. A very helpful and knowledgeable book for every home, a great tool for teachers and parents, and important skills for business and interpersonal relationships. This would be an excellent graduation or wedding shower gift.Personal Notes is really worth having

5-0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt Solace
Using the easy steps the author outlines in this lovely book, I wasable to offer solace to a friend who'd just lost her job; and to another who'd just lost her partner of many years; and to still another who'd just learned she was receiving a reward she'd worked for for many years. It wasn't that I was "borrowing" the author's words; she helped me get immediately in touch with my own. And, I've never felt I expressed myself better and in a way that was more helpful to another soul! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent etiquette book for young people
Good manners have never gone out of style."Be the Best You Can Be" not only teaches good manners and proper etiquette in a very readable format, the book also encourages and inspires young people to achieve poise and self-confidence.Well-written and easy to read, this book covers a wide variety of topics, including good posture, phone etiquette, table manners, personal grooming and image.Parents will also likely discover some interesting etiquette tips.Still not sold?My 12-year-old daughter liked the book so well that she wanted - no, insisted - on reading it twice! How's that for reaching one's target audience?Great job, Ms. Thompson!

4-0 out of 5 stars Manners Are Lacking In Today's World.
In this updated guide to ettiquette for modern times, she addresses marriage etiquette in "blended" families. In her NEW Etiquette for Executives, which is a bit outdated, a woman should dress according to her profession. Seeing a woman move up the ranks at the local transit system, going from old-fashioned denim dress with boots to cover the rest of her, to dressing like a common street walker, I had to make a comment, "You need to dress professional." Her boss, attired in orange pants and ball cap at a special "Meet the Manager" day, dressed down to what he perceived is the level of the riders; he asked me, "Do you think I should be wearing a suit?" and I merely said, "I will tell you what I did Ms. P, "You should dress professional." The rudeness of some transit employees show their disrespect for the older person of different races and for their job. When we get on that bus, our lives are in the hands of these rude, surly, prejudiced persons who say derogatory remarks to and about passengers in front of others. They can refuse to stop to pick you up at their discretion, and they take advantage of that. It's not just bad manners. It shows how regressed a certain percentage of the population has become. They are ignorant and uneducated, and show it.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Tastefully Inclusive, Dignified Way To Live
I originally requested this book for Christmas because of both Ms. Baldrige's conservative reputation and the fact that it was said to address the roles of gays and lesbians in the family. I was not disappointed. It is a fabulous general etiquette book that my mother could respect and would read. And it includes my lifestyle too! Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Conversation: A History of a Declining Art.
Great read offering possible insights and reasons for the obvious decline in casual conversation in America specifically and the west in general.
4-0 out of 5 stars Food for Thought
An affecting, enagaging rumination on the past, present, and future of conversation. The book is strongest in examining the great 18th century conversationalists -- Hume, S. Johnson -- and in offering observations on "conversibility" in the modern age.In some of the other historical chapters, Miller does not seem quite as well informed, and the thread of the essay stretches a bit thin.
5-0 out of 5 stars Talk is Not Cheap
Miller's faith in the value of good-humored, reasonable talk among civilized people flies in the face of the current tendency toward opinionated, virulent, and self-serving public discourse. Yes, he rants occasionally, but the ranting is funny and right-on, a slam-dunk comment on the level to which manners have slumped in our age. His scholarship is impeccable and his style a model of what conversationshould be--witty and wise. Barbara Gardner, PhD, Mendocino, CA ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of etiquette 'rules'
I teach etiquette. In one of my courses I teach those who wish to be etiquette teachers.Even though I write etiquette articles and booklets myself, I give this book to everyone of my teachers--it is that good.I only disagree with her views on gift giving, which isn't an overwhelming negative considering that the book is 896 pages and gift giving is a small element.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I have an older copy of Emily Post's Etiquette that I think is much better written than this version. Yes, I do admire the idea of updating the book to recognize changes since the 1980s, such as the rise in the use of email and cellphones. Nonetheless, I think the book raises these issues without giving much in the way of practical etiquette advice. Want to know something surprising? Letitia Baldrige's new etiquette book does a much better job on this front. Frankly, I'll probably donate the new Post book to clear space on my crowded bookcases.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Emily Post Etiquette" A Valuable Companion

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
This book has easy to follow instructions and is very informative about the history of the napkin folds. My husband smiles when he sits down to eat. It's fun decorating the table now.

2-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat palatable
Being a napkin enthusiast, naturally I'm quite an avid fan of Linda Hetzer, however, I find it immensely unnerving that she inexcusably has omitted several key napkin folding solutions.Apparently, she just wouldn't make the effort to list 100 Fancy Folds, just only 94 - how revolting.4-0 out of 5 stars Splendid and informative
Hetzer and Penny have excelled themselves with this fine work, which truly does offer 94 napkin folds. They are all relatively simple, even for people at the art of their origami careers. The book loses a star, though, for not properly discussing which fold is best suited to the Subbuteo tabletop. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must for invitations!
I run a small stationery and invite business (Quite the InviteTM) and have found this to be an invaluable tool for my business. This book covers all possibilities. Not everyone has use for this book, but anyone who does lots of entertaining or needs to make sure their invites follow protocol, this is a must.

4-0 out of 5 stars the definitive guide to elegant stationery
A lovely reference book on formal and semi-formal stationery, calling cards, and the proper wording for invitations.Filled with enthusiasm after reading the book, I went into my local stationers to price some of this fancy stuff and concluded that I was better off with a computer and printer. Not that I wouldn't love engraved letter sheets, monogrammed notes, and house stationery, but it would run into the hundreds of dollars. And that's just for the letter sheets and engraved envelopes! However, it's wonderful to press my nose against the window and dream about spending my children's inheritance on engraved correspondence cards!4-0 out of 5 stars A desk reference with attitude.
As someone who got really intrigued by parchment and fancy fonts when I got married, I'm rather surprised that the only version of this book still in print is the "Blue Book of Wedding Stationery." After all, one can have a hoity-toity paper fetish without being engaged.Read more

Great book filled with cost effective ideas for throwing a great party! Pleanty of variety in the book to suit everyone's taste and budget!

3-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful when it comes to organizing!
This book offered many tips on many different themes in parties. Although, it seems that Diane is more oriented with weddings, she tends to have quite a few chapters on weddings in this book. She does, however, have good ideas for barbeques, post-prom parties and random special events.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any educator of Spanish speaking students.
I found this book to be very helpful as a resource in my classroom. With several Spanish speaking students (preschool) I repeatedly returned to this book for answers. I do have some knowledge of Spanish. I can see how this book could not be as helpfull to an educator with little or no Spanish language background. It was very relevant to school situations. I have used it as a resource when dealing with students from 2 years old to 20 years old. Every school should be required to have this wonderful book available to its educators.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful if you have had prior experience w/Spanish.
As a special education teacher in an inner city school, I am in constant contact w/the parents of my students, most of whom are of Hispanic descent. 1-0 out of 5 stars Nearly worthless
This book should be called "Spanish vocabulary for educators" as that's about all it offers. An occasional poorly presented grammar lesson is thrown in. At one point Mr. Harvey says a grammatical concept is too hard to explain so just find some Spanish speaking people and listen to them. I would have the exact quote (which I did when I wrote to the publisher about this insult to educators) but I threw the book out. Don't waste your money on this piece of trash; a good dictionary will serve you better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Complete A to Z Guide on Table Setting, Manners and Tableware.
At last a book that address's the who, what, when, where, how and why of table settings, tableware and manners. Very sadly over the years etiquette, especially table has been flushed down the proverbial toilet. This is a must have reference book for any home; and, makes for a great engagement, housewarming or new apartment gift. There are two (2) hope chests sitting within the walls of our home; both have a copy of The Art of the Table. Upon receiving this book, my girls and I sat down and started to skim through it,two (2) hours later found us taking out the fine china, stemware and silver. We set both a formal and informal table. A memory I shall forever treasure. Suzanne Von Drachenfels thank you, for this great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A phenominal resource book dedicated to enlighten and inform its reader.
The Art of The Table - A Complete Guide to Table Setting, Table Manners, and Tableware, is extremely thorough in covering all the details related to proper table etiquette. Author Suzanne Von Drachenfels makes it so easy, and entertaining in the process, finding the answer to any mealtime dilemma.

2-0 out of 5 stars Save the Money for your Wedding
I was very diappointed.I found very little money saving tips in this book.I wanted to find ways to have everything I want and still save money. This book mostly tells you to cut things out or ask guests to do stuff for you. I would not recommend it at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth reading
I bought and read this book when my youngest daughter began planning her wedding. She had 3 years to plan so we had a lot of time to consider the suggestions in the book. She planned her wedding with the guidelines suggested in the book. I dont think it would have been as helpful if we had less time to plan. This book is not going to give you a detailed list of how to spend only 5000. It gives you ideas on how to cut cost in areas that are inconsequential. It still takes time to locate reasonable vendors, and you HAVE to either cut down on your guest list or offer a less formal reception. I would recommend this book to anyone that needs to keep costs down.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful

2-0 out of 5 stars Trite
This book was trite. I bought it with high hopes and it did have some worthwhile pointers, but it seemed to be disorganized and the information wasn't laid out in a way that you could refer to it. I read through the whole thing in a couple of hours and the one pointer that came up about 3 or 4 times was how it was not lady-like to leave sanitary napkins in other people's homes if you are an overnight guest. This struck me as strange not only because it was mentioned at least 4 times, but I cannot imagine "packing-out" my trash like this, especially if I were a guest for a number of days. It also mentioned what a lady does when she's had to much to drink, I think that it is not lady-like to have so much to drink that you cannot get home, etc. it probably should mention that over-indulging is not lady-like. I plan to return this book because it lacked a lot and next time I plan to buy Emily Post.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pleasing to look at...not much substance
I bought this to add to my growing collection of etiquette books, but it's less a book of etiquette advice (no real guidelines) and more a book of brief, isolated observations about what kind of person aspiring ladies would like to be ("A lady always knows when to X," "A lady will know how to Y").
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
The book is written on a phrase-by-phrase basis about simple, common-sense issues. This would be a good purchase if the reader were much younger, maybe nine years old, but does have a negative, somewhat bitter approach to manners. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A guide to handling both traditional and modern manners dilemmas
This is the latest book from the Emily Post Institute, the established authority on all things etiquette. Some might wonder about the relevance of an etiquette book to the 21st century, but in her introduction, author Peggy Post explains that the Institute continues to receive thousands of questions every month. In this book, Peggy sets out to answer some of the most common of those questions, ranging from the more traditional ("What do I do when I'm introducing someone and suddenly forget their name?") to the thoroughly modern ("I met my boyfriend through an online dating service...").

1-0 out of 5 stars This book deserves zero stars
Please do not waste your hard-earned money on this book like I did.It is a waste. The book is a compendium of common sense with a cute cover and a high price.Jane Buckingham's research consists of checking out a few websites (don't believe me?Read her bibliography in the back of the book). It's a mornoic book and and top of that, there were several sections that offended me.Especially when she talks about how "slobby" Ikea furniture is and how she never eats mayonnaise.Give me a break.I want advice from a "real" intelligent woman who has worked hard for what she's gotten. Not some skinny Duke grad trying to get rich off publishing information you can find faster by googling.I'm embarrassed I bought this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Know-it-All
Simply put this book gives you the low-down on life. From decorating to clothes. It even provides a stain removal guide, health and heart section which breaks down nutrition. It is ideal for females who need some of life's mundane questions answered in zero to ten seconds. It is a one-stop source for the living girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Any college girl
Starting out on my own was very hard but this book provided the key! This book should be read by any young woman getting out on her own! There are so many ideas in here as to how to clean, entertain, do laundry etc. Many of the ideas I wouldn't have thought of on my own.I plan on giving my little sister this book when she moves out on her own.It is a must read!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
It's a very good book.It teach you not only the words but it teach you how to use words. You can learn the correct grammar, the accent and most important the context.
5-0 out of 5 stars Are you tired of speaking in childish English?!!
I would like thank Slangman David Burke for his wonderful books. Actually, this series helped me a lot to understand American culture and daily conversations , especially with its comical pictures.May be the main attracting feature of this book which also has differentiated it from other similar idiom books is its nice division of slangs into some daily topics with pictorial format.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is WAY COOL!
I recommend this book "BIG TIME"!! It's the most useful book I have found on American slang and idioms. I have spent a lot of money of other books to learn how Americans REALLY speak (what they teach us in school is not the real language). They are more like dictionaries, and use old terms that Americans don't use any more. David Burke, who calls himself "Slangman," has created a series of books that are really great for ESL students who are

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good
When I got this book I was not expecting nothing more than narrow minded approach to etiquete and "good habits", instead I found a delightful reading full of sarcastic humor and useful tips. I think this book is definitely a surprise and maybe that is why some readers find it odd or disappointing, but I can assure you it is not.
5-0 out of 5 stars Metrosexual Guide review
This book is AWESOME. Clear, concise and well written. Includes EVERYTHING a man should know about food, fashion, travel, style, grooming, health, fitness, art, etiquette, you name it. I use is as a guideline for everything. Easy to read with a good sense of humor.

2-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but...
This book is full of useful advice, but do not mistake it for instruction on how to become a gentleman. Despite what one would think, I have come to appreciate this term "Metrosexual" as it distinguishes those who use manners and the appearance of urbane sophistication for their own self-advancement from true gentlemen.True gentlemen show respect for themselves and others, bringing the light of civilization to a darkening world, and leaving society better for their efforts.A gentleman's manners, urbanity and consideration are a lifestyle, not a mask that is donned for selfish convenience.

I bought this book with the anticipation of eventuallygoing to India but more so to better understand my Indian in laws.I always felt like there was something I was missing when my husband and I would visit his family. This book explained a few etiquette questions that I had. It's a good starter book but there is always room for improvement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Culture Smart, India
This is the kind of book every first-time traveler to India needs! It is short and to-the-point, and gives a very concise guide to customs and etiquette that is required learning for Westerners.Other version of the Culture Smart series are available, so if you're traveling outside the U.S., be sure to get one of these incredibly handy guides. These books are small enough to take with you to for a quick refresher course, too! ...
