5-0 out of 5 stars Everything I wanted and more
This book is comprehensive and easy to use.I had no idea how many options there could be for a ceremony or how to put one together.Metrick, has provided a step by step guide with wonderful examples.I've seen reviews of her work as an officiant on the Knot, and apparently she's draws from many traditions with ease and is great to work with.I loved the excerpts of ceremonies that she includes in the book. What a good way to see possibilities.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to creating an original ceremony.
I loved this book.My partner and I come from totally different backgrounds and were not comfortable going with either of our traditions.Metrick helped us draw the best from our histories and blend it with our values and desires for an original ceremony. The book is comprehensive andeasy to use, offering lots of great examples. There are wonderful quotes, great humor, practical advice, and answers to many questions.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Proper and Well-Planned Wedding
This planner guide is beautiful. I love the binding since it is easy to browse topics without the book flipping closed. It covers various information and check lists that are useful to first-time brides (or mothers of the bride). I appreciate the simplicity and the inclusion of Post's infamous manners to help me plan a proper wedding. The big drawback is that the book is so crisp and worth saving as a memoir of the planning process and 'big day' that I am timid to write in it and make full use of its pages for fear I'll mess it up. Otherwise, it is a classic and simple gift for a newly engaged couple.

3-0 out of 5 stars Planner Does Not Meet Expectations
I am a huge fan of Emily Post's Wedding Etiquette book and it has helped me be a better bride, bridesmaid, and wedding guest. It is well organized and lays the proper etiquette for every possible scenario. It's wonderful.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Planner
I was delighted with my planner when I received it. It's very well made, and it covers EVERYTHING. The great thing about this planner is if you are having a smaller, less formal wedding and reception (like my fiance and I) you can just skim past the info you don't need, and get straight to what you are looking for. This planner is ideal for any type of wedding, it even has alot of information about destination weddings and how to cut costs. I was unsure about the whole marriage liscense/changing my name thing, and Emily Post's Wedding Planner lays everything out for you. For the clueless bride to be, she covers everything from dresses to veils to flowers, and tells you about the different types and kinds. Overall it's a very handy tool, with charts and checklists and a nice pocket to hold papers. I found myself jotting things down as I went through it the very first time. I only have one complaint about the planner: it is not a standard paper sized book, therefore regular sized sheets of paper do not fit in the pocket. I found myself using a manila folder along with it to hold printouts of pictures I didn't want to fold. The pocket is ideal for invitation samples, swatches, and business cards though. Even with this drawback, the planner itself is worth the pocket sacrifice. If you want to do a wedding right, then this is the planner for you. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Designer's book is a flop
Being heavily involved in producing large events, I would have expected a much better book. The ideas offered were mediocre at best.Better you focus on decor ideas by companies such as Avi Adler or Preston Bailey (their work is of better quality) and consult real caterers for food. Both Avi & Preston are much more creative and versatile than anything offered in this book.I can tell you this from first hand experience.

1-0 out of 5 stars All About Working With Party Planners
I expected a book on how to plan your own parties, nice doable tips - not at all what this book is about. If you want tips on hiring a party planner or other party services, this is for you.If you like to do things yourself, ie.cook, plan, decorate, look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful!
This book was a lifesaver!I called a friend who was an amateur photographer.I had her take some photos of us and also reviewed her portfolio. We discussed the photos she took of us and what we liked and didn't like.We made a list of must have shots and ideas we had in mind. They came out beautiful!
2-0 out of 5 stars Be known for the cheapest wedding ever
Unless you want all your friends to say, "That was the cheapest wedding ever!", this isn't the right book for you. The tips were unhelpful and unrealistic for anyone who wants to have an elegant wedding on a budget. Examples:
5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for some good ideas
Although this is not the best bridal budget book, its still, all in all, a good book with some good ideas. It does stress getting everyone involved, which for some, is welcoming. If you're a bride who has a family who's always giving you their 2 cents worth, this may be the budget planning book for you. It will get everyone involved in planning, helping and setting up for your wedding. If not, there are a few tips you can still use. Diane Warner has many books worth reading and I think she's knowledgeable in her ideas. This book is much better than Denise and Alan Fields' "Bridal Bargains". The book itself is more comfortable to read and hold (it's a standard size book with dark, large print, which "Bridal Bargains" is definetly not!) Besides, Diane Warner has some very original ideas which are legal and "Bridal Bargains" tells you some not so "authorized by law" ideas. Compare the two and I'm sure you'll agree, Diane Warner's "Big Wedding on a Small Budget" is much better! Just glimpse through and you'll see what I'm talking about. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Help for the unique bride with manners
The problem with Wedding Etiquette is that it's requirements just don't work for everyone. So how do you get around those that don't suit your needs, but still keep your manners? This book is the answer. It tells you which etiquette rules you can break without offending or appearing ill-mannered, and how you can bend others so they work for you, the unique couple. It's also a fun read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great tips, concise, but maybe a bit too concise
I have recently become engaged, and I'm dreading planning a wedding.I picked up this book because the questions are already beginning, and I was hoping to find some polite ways to tell people to back off. This book does offer some suggestions there, and overall, it helped me become a bit more excited about the process without drowning me in details.I do wish that they had included more than they did in this book. For example, they give some suggested text for invitations. They tell you that "request the honour of your presence" is only to be used for ceremonies held at a place of worship. However, "request the honour of your presence" is used in *all* of their suggested formal wordings. They didn't provide a single example of the etiquette for a formal wording for a wedding held outdoors or in a banquet hall or other non-religious location.Considering that they suggest alternate locations in several places (and even recommend destination weddings as an option, which I found refreshing as I'm figuring on having one), this omission was glaring. There's several other little things like that where I feel a few more pages would have made this book perfect.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful book, but desperately needs a fact-checker
There aren't many books to help one navigate social customs in the diverse cultures of Asia, and for that reason this book is extremely useful. The author admirably tries to give depth and context to the rules of etiquette in Asia by providing some historical, cultural and religious background, but, unfortunately, he gets a lot of that stuff wrong. For example, he says the Buddha was a "wealthy Brahmin priest". In fact, he was a Kshatriya (warrior caste) prince. This is a key factor in his renunciation of wordly things, and important to know if you want to understand the role of the Buddha and Buddhism in India.
5-0 out of 5 stars Open the door to another culture
I teach at a language school in Fort Lauderdale. We receive students fromAsia and Europe who visit for 3 weeks to 6 months to improve their writtenand spoken English. What I often spend a lot of time doing, espeicallywith students from countries that are foreign to me, is deceiphering theircustoms and automatic responses to new situations. For example, a guyfrom Egypt walked with me to his apartment to give him a book.I wasperspiring so when we reached his bedroom, he pulled out a red box andsprayed cologne on my shirt's armpits, in front of my shirt and on my leftand right ear."Now you will feel fresh."Well, I'm waiting forDean Allen Foster's book on North Africa or the Middle East, because hisbook about customs in Asia is stellar.I highly recommend its ability togive near-instant insight into the mores and traditions of foreigncultures. To meet a guy from Japan or China without knowing the stuff inthis book is like entering a supermarket without a map of the store andexpecting to find toilet paper quickly. This book is like an aisle guideto the store and it might even point out that toilet paper is sold in adifferent container than you expect. the book helped me overcome somemisconceptions (and fears) that I had developed about China and I amgrateful for that.Write to me if you have other insights. stevemccrea@usa.com ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, inexpensive.
This is actually a decent little course, but if your budget allows, the Living Language Russian Basic/Intermediate course is better and has an advanced course for further study. But if you're on a tight budget, this is actually pretty good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not for everyone
The good things about this course are its systematic approach to learning the language, and its combination of written and audio material. The one shortcoming is that the course covers quite a bit of ground, and there is not enough reinforcement of previously learned concepts. 5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Russian Course
I have been studying Russian, on my own, for about a year. I have tried Rosetta Stone, Pimsleur and many other courses. The other courses, although very good for what they are, seemed to be lacking in one area or another. I also seemed to get bored with the other programs. With this book and CDs, I wanted to keep learning. This course will teach you all the aspects of beginning Russian, at the fastest pace and the cheapest price, which is why I chose it as my favorite Russian learning course. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Caution! For classroom settings only!
I bought this book to get ideas for the large Halloween party we throw every year. This book is strictly sighted at school parties, including classroom crafts and games designed for a school setting. Since so many schools don't even allow "Halloween" to be mentioned (my kids have attended two schools that dictate "Harvest" themes) this book is of little use to me. ... Read more

if you're looking to run a meeting using parliamentary procedure, buy the 10th ed., which has superceding rules and is in the modern English. This is a reprint of the original of 1907. However, if you just want some information on the basics of order or are wanting to see how these rules have evolved, then you might find this interesting.

Editorial Review

From Miss Manners, the long-time oracle on matters of etiquette and social relationships, here is a contemporary guide to being civilized in the modern world, based on her replies to real letters from readers of her celebrated syndicated newspaper column. Although some of her advice has an old-fashioned ring to it--she favors politeness, school uniforms and careful courtship, and rather disapproves of too much television--she can handle herself on very up-to-date problems like date rape and online etiquette. For problems from the trivial to the life-shattering, Miss Manners has answers that are rarely superficial, and usually fun. ... Read more

Editorial Review

While this book is very much in the style of Martha Stewart, the parties that it depicts were planned and executed by other folks. There's a Louisiana lunch at a stately home outside Baton Rouge, complete with maquechoux oysters and pecan-crusted catfish; a garden harvest party, with mountains of vegetarian delights served in an East Hampton garden; a Vietnamese-Thai feast in a garden by the Sacramento River, with the signature flavors of Southeast Asian cooking--lime, ginger, lemongrass, chile paste--gracing spring rolls, chicken, and fish; a soul-food brunch given by an interior designer in Harlem that includes collard greens, gumbo, and sweet potato tarts. Details such as how to make lovely, lotus-like napkin folds are illustrated in "Good Things" sidebars. From the down-home barbecue in a horse arena in Marfa, Texas, to the Polynesian fantasy picnic on the beach in Maui, the key to a great party, says Martha, is caring--"about people, originality, the most attractive settings, and lovely, finely honed, time-honored traditions." And let's not forget food. ... Read more

Theme parties are great!Getting your guests to "dress the part" isn't at all difficult! If you want people to dress up, just inform them that it is a "themed costume party".Your guests will try to out-do each other with their creative costumes. It really makes things a lot of fun and makes decorating in a theme really worth the effort! My friends and I have one about once a month.

Now I know that we can't all go to Texas to have an authentic Tex-Mex fiesta, but the ideas are great none the less. Who care's if no one comes dressed the part? This book is all about themes. Themes that you can manipulate and call your own. Each party is beautifully photographed and the recipes are delicious. They even offer her infamous "Good Things" as a sidebar for many of the parties. Don't let the perfection overwhelm you. This book delievers. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Dated & disappointing!
Warning to potential buyers of this book...it's pretty expensive for what you get - have to say I expected a gorgeous hard cover and lots of glossy pics but it is NOT like that. Whilst the cover is hard, there is minimal coloured pics. All in all, whilst this book has good ideas I was generally disappointed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated for Event Planners of the New Millennium!
If you are not a professional event organizer planning a non-official function, this book may be of some use to you. However, I found the book a disappointment due to the fact that most of the material including context, venue layout, theme concepts, designs, and especially the photos (mostly inblack & white) very outdated. These material would have been useful inthe early 80s. Definitely not worth the price it is charging. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not that great
The book is pretty and has a bit of useful information, but definitely not what I was looking for.You can get most of the information on the internet anyway.Save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars a wealth of information--evenbeyond the wedding
I have to admit, while planning my wedding I was hesitant at first to purchase a book that seemed to be on only one wedding topic. But being into stationery and typography, I'm glad I took a chance on this one. I wanted our wedding invitation to be really special (we have been together a long time and already have a child), and this book helped us achieve that goal. All the bases are covered, so you really understand what all your options are in a simple, non-overload way. This book is like a "master class", and is great for anybody who is interested in printing, stationery or invitations in general.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot of useful information
I'm not sure what the reviewer below was reading because this book contains everything you could ever hope to know about wedding invitations. It's definitely visually attractive, but it's the useful information (even gives you a timeline for you invites to make sure you're on track which I am often not!) that make this a must-have item for anyone about to get married. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Perverted disgusting garbage
Reading Mr. O'Rourke's "All the Troubles in the World" gave me the impression that he is an excellent political/economics analyst with a tolerable bad streak. The fine writing in that book encouraged me to acquire some of his other work.
4-0 out of 5 stars Modern Manners: An Etiquette Book for Rude People
Modern Manners:An Etiquette Book for Rude People written by P.J. O'Rourke is a humorus book.A book the will get you laughing and you will not spot till the end.2-0 out of 5 stars Not his best
I am a big PJ fan but this was disappointing with a serious lack of content. Start with his best works, Holidays in Hell and Parliament of Whores; then if you really want more work you're way down to this. ... Read more
