A ton of info
I purchased this book as a gift for my husband but I find myself looking through it also. An amazing amount of information! The downside is the book's size - it takes up a lot of space on the coffee table.

A MUST FOR THE DISCERNING COLLEGIATE HISTORIAN
I have written three books on the history of USC football, and am working on a fourth: ranking the 25 greatest all-time traditions and best single-season teams ever. I found this work to be an important tool. Without it, I would have had to use the web or call a bunch of overworked SIDs and ask them to be my de facto reearch assistants. That's close!

Wonderful, Comprehensive, User-Friendly... But Where Are the Women?!
With all of the other verbose reviews posted here extolling the various perks of this massive encyclopedia, I will merely say succinctly that "The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding" nearly covers the sport from A to Z without missing a beat.It is a great reference book and I have been finding it very inspirational whenever I set out to develop a new routine for myself.The many personal stories told in Arnold's friendly voice are also generally interesting, and the chapters dealing more specifically with competitions and nutrition are noteworthy.
The Most Comprehensive Book Of It's Kind!
I originally bought this book around 20 years ago. I read it from cover to cover many times andlearned a tremendous amount! Years ago, I regrettably lent it out without ever getting it back so I recently bought another copy for my son when he started weight training.

Would be 5 stars except for some errors I found
I have been interested in pro football stats since the late 1950s, so I ordered this new encyclopedia immediately (I have all the other ones referred to in this one).And as the authors said might might happen, once I got the book yesterday, I was up until the wee hours of the morning perusing it!
Incredible Value, A Must Have, Room For Improvement
I have been buying Football stat books since the 1970's so I feel like I can offer a well informed opinion. I have been waiting for a book like this since Total Football II became out of date and overall I am very pleased. This book raises the bar, it's got pretty much everything and then some, but there are some areas that need to be improved.
Oh, Baby.
It has all the crap you'd expect for something like this, like the main stats for every player, a list of all the head coaches and their yearly records, hall of fame members (including yearly finalists), pro-bowl rosters, yearly standings (with more detailed stats than you'll easily find anywhere else) complete with a blurb on the season, and top-five finishers in a variety of categories.

highy recommended
This book is the real encyclopedia with thorough contemplation ofa very experienced author. You will not find numerous pictures or the beginning stuff several times repeated in this work. But you will find two-column dense text of pure-gold information that every good and skillful weightlifter or bodybuilder should know.
NOT for beginners, very good for more advanced lifters
The book is huge and really explains every tiny aspect of O lifting. If you are a beginner it can actually be a bad thing since you're flooded with an enormous amount of information, but when you have a solid foundation and you aren't just lifting to improve your performance but participating in the sport of weightlifting this book is for you. It is about time to have a Second Edition.
It is about time for Mr. Drechsler to refine his encyclopedia in a newer edition. He must find ways of reducing the lengthy pages of text, without illustration or appropriate paragraph breaks, into less boring and modern style. His wealth of knowledge is greatly undermined by his extensive literal description of techniques and approaches, with skimpy illustrations. Read more

A must have for the Philadelphia Eagle fan.
A comprehensive easy read.Full of facts, and interesting stories about the franchise that is really "America's" team.Little bios of many of the personalities that have worn the green and white.Every time I opened up the book there was something new to learn.Written for the everyday Joe, you will not be dissapointed if you love the Eagles.The Eagles are my squad so this may be slightly biased...Shout out to Randall...

Profiles in Green & White
The articles on the individual coaches & players is very informative, this alone makes it a must read for any Eagles fan. There is also a comprehensive record of individual & team records plus a year by year run down on the team. The only thing missing is a won-lost record overall, by teams, home & away. Would make a great gift for all your Eagle die-hards.

Too Many Hokey Stats
If you're a baseball stats junky (like me), how can this not be the perfect book? The best baseball reference book
Total Baseball is definitely a must for every baseball fan, from hardcore to casual. And it can be a gateway for many who haven't enjoyed the blessings of this beautiful game. There's everything you need to know: from team histories, great essays on the Negro Leagues. There's stuff for the stat nut as well: from sabermetrics to a handy guide on how to score a game, some insights on Women and Baseball, and of course, the hefty, precise and so accurate register of every player in Major League history. There's even a chapter on International Baseball results, that suprisingly, does NOT include the champions of the Venezuelan League, and does have the Dominican and Mexican team champions. Anyway, all in all, if you love baseball or simply you want to understand baseball, this book is for you.

Yearly Update is needed...
This is the Holy Writ of baseball's statistical gurus. The problem is that they ohly update about every other year. As the "OFFICIAL" tome of MLB, the least they could do is release an update after each season. Read more

The Bible is no longer in print!
For anyone who is interested in golf course architecture, this book is a must for your library.Contains a complete index (a continuous work-in-process) of architects and their courses. Essentially every course in the world (including those which are no longer in existance), is listed including its location, date of orgin and the architects who created it also the provider of any known substantial (professional) renovation work.It must take a tremendous effort for the authors to keep this book up to date. I hope the fact that this book is no longer in print indicates that the authors are hard at work.If you do not have a copy find one, if you have to go the the library and photocopy theirs (but bring a stack of dimes its very long). ... The Encyclopedia of Yacht Designers
A Truly magnificent book, all the photos and drawings a boat enthusiast could ever want.I nice broad range of vessel types covered from racing multihulls to powerboats to keel boats and gaff rigged schooners.

This book is very impressive and the years of extensive work to create and publish this book is amazing!A great conversation piece on a coffee-table.Anyone who enjoys yachts would enjoy this book, whether you have an interest in yacht designing or not.Or maybe I'm just a little partial, as my Dad, William H. Shaw, is one of the yacht designers written about in this bookand I'm very proud of him.

An instant classic. This is an indispensable resource that has been too long in coming. The research is amazingly put together and the depth of entries is impressive. I was particularly interested in the research on Walter Pinaud and the yachting activity around Cape Breton at the turn of the century. By Far the Best Baseball Book in Print!

Excellent on theory, planning, and price. Mediocre on technique and mechanics.
It is hard not to give this book five stars. The author has labored hard and honestly to present deep, extensive, and insightful information on a specialized subject, on which few people could even scratch its surface.Not only his hard labor that earns him credit, but also his open mindedness and intimate association with physical training has that rendered his work believable. This book will survive its author, as one of the best references on planning strengthening routines. Needless to say, its cover design is simple, thoughtful, and smart.
Thorough
This book is a very comprehensive guide towards setting and properly adjusting your workout routine, with hundreds of specific exercises and a clear explanation of the different types of muscle movements and resistance types.Very useful, although "encyclopedic" is right - it is dense and overwhelming enough to be a bit hard for the beginning weight trainee, although the book attempts to overcome this by offering a few pre-made workouts in the book for specific strength and muscle goals.

A lot of information
I liked this book.Hence, I'm writing this review!I would say the book is geared towards intermediate and beyond weight trainers.The book contains many many workout routines which could prove to be a bit overwhelming for the novice lifter.Whole chapters are devoted to strength routines, bodybuilding (hypertrophy) routines, etc.As a strength training devotee I enjoyed reading the "russian squat" routine among others included in the book.I think most serious weight trainers would enjoy this book... it's definitely not watered down stuff. ... Something for Tiger fans to find pleasure in
Well, as a die hard Tiger fan (a curse of being born in the Detroit area, I suppose) I TOTALLY recommend this book.It gives as thorough and comprehensive history of the Tigers as I've ever read . . . including a ton of interesting little anecdotes that I had never heard before.I received the Encyclopedia as a gift, and now I'm buying one for a friend.If you like the Tigers, or even if you're just in to "old school" baseball, this is the book for you.
